Arc kindly received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.
This was a super cute little picture book about a little boy growing a pumpkin. The font and illustrations are beautiful, and the storyline is very simple to follow.
But...
With my teacher head on, I can see so much potential for discussion that could stem from this book,
*diversity
*family
*the life cycle of plants
*different things that can be produced from one seed
*patience
*height, weight and capacity
*den making
*racing giant pumpkins
*stem activities such as creating your own floating boat, or seeing what vegetables float when hollowed out.
I really feel like this is a book that keeps giving 🙂
4/5
This is an enjoyable book for reading practice. There is some repetition about declining the next step in the growing process and insight into the growing fruit process in a child-centred way. It could probably do with slightly less pages for the level the book is pitched at.
The pictures are pretty. The language is pitched just right for young primary school-aged kids. As a bonus, there are two pages of photos and facts at the end. A perfect read just before the onslaught of spring to encourage children to buy into the 'grow-your-own' regime.
I think my children would quite enjoy this book. 4/5!
This is a cute picture book showing the process of planting things in a way that even the youngest reader will like. Recommended for 1-100. ;)
This children’s book teaches how a pumpkin grows than what different things we can do with a pumpkin. It is an adorable book that put a smile on my face. The illustrations are also amazing. It is perfect for the fall season.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is the perfect addition to our fall pumpkin theme. Not only does it explore the life cycle of the pumpkin seed but goes beyond that to explore the various other ways to use pumpkins. I love the addition of actual photographs and extra information about pumpkin regattas. This would be a great wrap up to the unit with its connections to sink/float. Great pictures, representation of students and family (love the father/son visual) and I enjoyed the element of a pattern in the writing to further engage young learners. Would definitely love to add this to my home and classroom libraries.
An informative book with good dialogue. Kids will enjoy seeing the beautiful pictures and reading what the child in the book is doing. This book has good flow and is quick to read with words kids can sound out.
This children's book is an adventure in the creation of growing a pumpkin. With colorful illustrations and some back ground to real adventures in growing pumpkins, you and your child will be engaged in the smallest of seeds to the biggest of pumpkins. Have you ever head of making a boat of a pumpkin? That would have to be very big and believe it or not their are some pictures to attest.
Not only are pumpkins the star of this read but a variety of characters in community makes it just as special.
A special thank you to Capstone Edition and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
This book does a great job going through the process a plant takes to grow. I liked how the character doesn’t just eat the plant, but there is a purpose for them to grow the pumpkin. I think kids would be interested in seeing how bog pumpkins can get and to think that they could be used as a boat. Very interesting. Many different conversations could be had from this book. Nicely written !
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book. Unfortunately, I do not have the capability to read it not in kindle form. Thank you.
OMG I just love pumpkins and this book is all about them! Beautiful illustrations of huge pumpkins and I really enjoyed seeing what becomes of the pumpkins after the weigh in at the fair. Such a fun read especially around harvest time, Halloween and Autumn. I highly recommend it for kids of all ages. Thanks #Netgalley for the early review copy!
Let It Grow! is a fun book about a boy who plants a pumpkin seed. I enjoyed his patience and that we learn how pumpkins grow, the different growth phases, and the many ways they can be used. Eventually the gigantic pumpkin is used for a boat! I loved learning about the Great Pumpkin Regatta. What a fun book!
Thank you Capstone and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
When growing fruits, it's easy to grow impatient and give up or harvest early. The young man in the story doesn't let impatience get the better of him, though. He teaches readers a lesson of the patience, care, and the rewards that come from giving something the time it needs to grow.
This is a beautiful book featuring a young man of color growing a pumpkin and ignoring the temptations of harvesting it too early and losing all of his work. It offers lessons in patience for all children and representation for young boys of color in a hobby where they are underrepresented.
We have two narrative voices here, the one off-screen forever second-guessing and being puzzled by the intentions of our main character. He has a seed, which he intends to just let grow and grow – with the aim of it being a record-breaking giant pumpkin. And whether it tops the scales or not, he will float downstream in it as part of a pumpkin regatta. So that's something I've learnt today, that there are actual nautical pumpkin races. And our off-screen narrator of course learnt that some things are not instantly attainable, that patience can be a virtue, and that the best things can come to those who wait – and plan ahead. And have a lifejacket for the regatta. It's quite a quirky manner in which those morals are given, but this should be a success.
Thanks NetGalley for the arc! My toddler (3.5) and I really enjoyed this book together. As a family that loves to garden, she knew what it meant to plant seeds and wait for it to grow. The illustrations were perfect and the story was so cute. We enjoyed the facts at the end and had a good laugh at the real life picture of people in giant pumpkins as boats. We lived in Oregon for a few years and I had forgotten all about that, so it was a fun memory at the end of the book. Great story, would recommend and definitely read again!
This picture book strives to teach patience through growing a giant pumpkin from a seed. Even though you could enjoy each step of the process, such as adding sprouts to a salad or making a pumpkin pie, it is certainly more fun to grow a record-winning pumpkin or even a pumpkin you could race!
The question and answer format of the book makes this an engaging read for young children. However, I found some of the phrasing to be a bit awkward.
At the end of the book, the author includes fun facts, as well as pictures of giant pumpkins and people racing them in Oregon. Who knew you could race pumpkins in the river! When I was a child, we used to race our old shriveled-up Jack-O-Lanterns down our steep driveway, that is, until my mother decided we would stop carving pumpkins and only decorate them so she could make pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas!
The illustrations are colorful, and even though the drawings appear flat at first glance, there is actually some depth to the images. I appreciate that the illustrator strives to promote diversity in his work.
I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone Editions.
A super sweet story about the joys of planting a pumpkin and the fun things we can do with said pumpkin! The artwork is amazing and the ending was such a great twist. I can’t believe its based off a real event! Who knew Giant Pumpkin Regatta was an actual thing?!
*Thanks so much Netgalley and Capstone Editions for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
