Mindful Mr. Sloth by Katy Hudson is an adorable picture book about the friendship between a little girl and a sloth. Sasha loves to go go go, never stopping to focus on one activity for too long. She meets Mr. Sloth who encourages her to slow down and observe her environment and the beauty it contains. I loved the moral of this book and the illustrations are gorgeous and so sweet. This would be a perfect book for preschool to early elementary school aged children.
Thank you Capstone and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
What an absolutely beautiful book. The illustrations are stunning, so vibrant and engaging. The story is very much in the style of an aesop fable and brings the message of being more mindful to a young audience. The characters are so adorable and the friendship between them is wonderful. I have no doubt that this will become a firm favourite in many homes and schools and rightly so. It is a joy to read and has such a valuable lesson within.
With huge thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for a beautiful and mindful read.
The artwork in this is BEAUTIFUL. My kids are 6 and 8 and we are continually trying to work on their mindfulness. They really connected with this book, especially the explanation on the last page about mindfulness. The book is easy to read and my 6-year-old was able to read almost all of it himself, which I always appreciate in children's books. I will be getting some of the author's other books to tide my kids over until this one comes out!
Disclaimer: I received the ARC from the publisher through Net Galley. All opinions are my own.
Sasha Patience and Mr. Sloth are total opposites, and this story shows us the way opposites influence each other. Sasha has no time to stop. She starts doing two things at once and gets bored with things quickly. Mr. Sloth, of course, takes his time with everything and never loses his cool.
Mr. Sloth is the perfect example of how patience shows results. The message behind the book is not only to be patient, but also to slow down and enjoy the world. And how it's okay to sometimes go fast and sometimes go slow.
My mom always tells me stories about me being impatient as a child. I had to have it all and right now, and I wouldn't take no for an answer, which is one of the reasons I loved this story so much.
I don't want to forget to emphasise how warm, rich and comforting the illustrations were in this one!
So many thinks to NetGalley for this arc!! Can you give a book more than 5 stars? My toddler (3.5) and I both adored this book! It wasn't until the end that we realized it was by the same author who wrote our other favorite books "Too Many Carrots" and "The Golden Acorn" ! We had just picked it because it looked like a fun read and we love sloths. We can't wait to add this to our collection as soon as it is available to purchase!! My daughter and I both tend to rush about, operate on fast, and multitask but this book was a great reminder that it's ok to stop and slow down. I love reading aloud and when there are fun characters to make the story exciting, I adore it even more. I loved over exaggerating Mr. Sloth's sloooooooowwwww dialogue and it made my toddler laugh even more and really helped us stay in the moment of the story. It was well written, with beautiful illustrations as always, and so much detail to look at and talk about with early readers.
Sasha does things fast; while Mr. Sloth takes his time. Will Mr. Sloth show Sasha that sometimes its okay to slow down?
This was a cute book about mindfulness! The illustrations were fun and the story line reminded me of Aesop fables (especially the tort0ise and the hare). All in all, this was a great children's book about the importance of mindfulness that I ended up falling in love with!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Capstone for this delightful e-ARC!
Mindful Mr. Sloth is a quick storytime read that encourages children to take time to be mindful and appreciate the world around them. Sascha likes to be busy. She tries to do multiple things at once leaving her quickly jumping from one thing to the next. When she meets Mr.. Sloth she's happy to have a new friend except he just can't seem to keep pace! Can Mr. Sloth teach Sascha how to slow down and live in the moment?
This book reminded me a bit of the Tortoise and the Hare and makes a great resource to talk about mindfulness. The illustrations are very sweet, especially endearing are those of the friends playing. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a storytime title on kids wellness.
What an ADORABLE book! The story itself is so heartwarming and sweet, but the artwork is what really had me. The colours, the compositions, the diversity—all of it SO good!
This book was adorable! I loved how the sloth showed us it's good to slow down sometimes!
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!
Mindful Mr. Sloth by Katy Hudson was excellent! I loved this book for the beautifully detailed illustrations and for the message of mindfulness. A wonderful reminder to take the time to slow down and focus on the present.
My eldest son has been involved in speech & language therapy for 2 years now and would benefit from reading this story of mindfulness to remind him to slow down and to practice patience. I would recommend this one for all children and I’d love to add a copy to our home library when it’s published.
An enjoyable read for the whole family!

Mindful Mr. Sloth
Rating: 5/5
Mindful Mr. Sloth is a beautifully illustrated story which reminds us to slow down and enjoy life as it is happening. The main character, Sasha, loves to stay busy but doesn’t find the time to appreciate the journeys she is speeding through. When she discovers an unlikely friend, Mr. Sloth, she finds that life can still be enjoyable at a slower speed! I appreciated this story’s central message as well as the accompanying illustrations. Estimated read-aloud time would be less than 10 minutes. As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I think this book would be great for discussing mindfulness, patience, impulsivity, and/or rate of speech or actions with littles.
I received a free copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A wonderful children’s book with a relevant message about mindfulness! I love sloths & really enjoyed this book about Sasha, a kid who only has one speed – FAST – and what she learns upon meeting Mr. Sloth. A great message with lovely illustrations. Highly recommend for parents with children at home or as an addition to the classroom!
