David Bell doesn’t disappoint. Engrossing thriller that keeps you turning the pages wondering what’s next. Wasn’t expecting the ending. Strangely felt bad for Connor. I want to learn more about Rebecca.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc.
Thank you, NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this novel.
Wow, wow, wow! Just, wow! This book. I loved it and did not want to put it down. This author really outdid himself with this one and I’ve read several titles by him and many other mystery titles too, but this one is exceptional. Also, there was not nearly as much foul language as what you find in other mystery titles. And to me, that makes it just that much better.
Each character (not too many characters, either) is easy to understand, but my favorites were Connor and Madeline. Connor who is a Professor and working toward tenure at the university and striving to move forward after the death of his wife and son. Then you have Madeline who will be the first to graduate from college in her family. An exceptional writer, kind of a loner, but strives for excellence in academics.
This title really had me guessing who did it and the twist in the last chapter caught me by surprise too.
Well done!
Kill All Your Darlings was about Connor, an English professor who loves his job. Connor lost his wife and son, and throws himself into his work as a distraction. He is friendly with his students, specifically Madeline, who is working with him on her senior thesis, a novel. When Madeline disappears, Conner takes her thesis and publishes it as his own to keep his job. The book becomes a success and two years later, Madeline reappears and wants the money Connor got for the book. Conner isn’t sure what he should do, but when the police show up because the book is almost identical to a crime committed right before Madeline disappeared, he’s not sure if he should admit that he stole the book or risk being arrested for a murder that he did not commit.
One can't go wrong with a David Bell thriller. This story grabbed my interest right away and was a great weekend read. The story was intriguing, twisty, and very suspenseful. Character development was absolutely phenomenal which really made me want to finish! I highly recommend whether you’ve tried David Bell’s books or not. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book was amazing and I my favorite David Bell yet! I was hooked on the first page and couldn’t put it down!!!
Conner is a college professor who recently lost his wife and son in an accident. He’s been trying to write a book for years to get tenure but just hasn’t been able to. His student Madeline turns in an amazing manuscript then turns up missing. Conner decides to submit Madelines book as his own after she’s been missing for 2 years. Suddenly she’s back and Conner is a murder suspect in Sophie’s murder which is similar to the murder in his book. The book had several narrators and timelines but they ran together perfectly. This was a slow review and had so much built up anticipation.
Absolutely loved this book, if you haven’t read a David Bell book yet, start with this one!!!
Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley for my advanced ebook copy.
What a crazy ride. This one picks up a brisk pace from page one and keeps on going. The story line is original and well thought out. The characters are well developed and believable. There are so many twists and turns. Just when you think you know how it will play out it zigs... then it zags.
This was a great read
So much deceit. David Bell is an amazing storyteller who has a distinct way of making fiction something that can happen in current day. This work is another one with many twists. Just when I thought I had figured out who the murderer was, something else would happen to prove me wrong. It was surprising to find out so much deceit was going on. Don’t miss this book if you’re a fan of mystery and suspense. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.
Kill All Your Darlings is David Bell at his best! Connor Nye is a college writing professor. His wife and teenage son died in a tragic accident and he is in a dark place. He has been trying to write a book for a long time because he has tenure and you have to publish something in order to keep it. One of his graduate students, Madeline, turns in her thesis to him. It is a masterpiece—-a thriller about 2 women in a college town and one ends up murdered. When Madeline disappears and is still missing 2 years later, Connor submits Madeline’s book as his own. The book gets published to much success and he is very happy but still feels guilty about what he did. When Madeline returns and tells him she knows what he did, it sets off a chain of events that will lead to a murder and Connor being a suspect in more than one murder! This book was excellent. David Bell is the master of putting normal people in a nightmare scenario and then spending the whole book ruining their lives. This is my favorite type of book because you could easily see it happening to you. I also enjoyed the way the book had 3 narrators and different timelines. The mystery of what happened to cause Madeline’s disappearance is slowly revealed. Please read this book and while you’re at it read all of Bell’s books! You won’t regret it! Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I highly recommend this book. Different than what I normally read and completely unputdownable. David Bell never fails.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me the thrill of reading early.
Connor Nye has had a tough time of things. His wife and teenaged son were killed in a boating accident, and as a college writing professor, he needs to get published in order to get tenure and keep his job. But things are about to get much, much worse, because when Connor passes off manuscript from a student who’s gone missing as his own and now that it’s published, the student resurfaces and wants her due. I love David Bell’s writing---his ability to make the characters relatable is spot on, and his books are always full-on page-turners. This one is no different, and even though the ending doesn’t wrap up as cleanly as it should, it won’t stop me from reading his future works.
Special Note: Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another great story by David Bell! I loved the characters, the setting, and the unique storyline. Great and entertaining read!
EXCELLENT.
This was my second read from David Bell, and while I found the previous book that I had read from him to be a bit meh, i’m glad that I gave him another chance because I really enjoyed this one!!
Kill All Your Darlings was original and fresh, and I was hooked from the very beginning, as you are immediately thrown into the thrilling mystery.
The plot line was deliciously intense and intriguing, and I was flipping the pages at a frantic pace, eager to find out what was in store next.
The story starts off in a way that immediately grips you. A student disappears and is presumed dead. Then her professor decides to pass off her manuscript as his own and it becomes a best seller.
The story is told in various timelines, weaving back and forth between past and present, which just adds to the intensity of the plot. Receiving pieces of the puzzle bits at a time gave a more in-depth look at what truly happened, and made the story that much more enjoyable, as it was thrilling trying to fit all the pieces together. There were many layers to unravel, and the information revealed one piece at a time made for an excellent build up.
The shocking revelations throughout the story kept coming, so there was never a dull moment. I definitely did not predict the many twists and turns, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time i was reading.
I was thoroughly hooked and entertained throughout the entirety of my reading experience, and this is definitely a must read for thriller fans!
Kill All Your Darlings..... this was a book that was true to form, much of what I've come to expect when reading a David Bell book. The characters are well developed, the story is detailed and well-told, and the plot is just "original" and it's always refreshing to see where you end up by the end of the book. I really enjoyed Kill All Your Darlings. The main character is a guy that you feel bad for, but at the same time kind of wonder in the back of your mind if he's the good guy or the bad guy. The ending wrapped up nicely, and I would say that this is definitely another hit for David Bell.
Another great story by David Bell. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from Netgalley and was thrilled at once again, reading a good book. The story starts off great and grabs you when a student disappears and is presumed dead. Then her professor decides to pass off her manuscript as his own and it becomes a best seller.
So we follow Connor, an English professor, and his colleagues when two years later the student shows up and wants to expose him. I loved the back and forth of this book, the involvement of students and professors alike and then the surprise at the end (wasnt my number one suspect at all). Like his other books, David Bell has you turning the pages.
Look for the release on July 6, 2021 and make sure its on your TBR list. #Netgalley #fourstars
I am a huge fan of David Bell's novels so of course I was thrilled to hear about his latest book, Kill All Your Darlings! If you haven't read this book I highly recommend it!
The novel is told in varying timelines and different POV's. Parts are told in the present, when Dr. Connor Nye comes home to find a woman from his past sitting in his living room - her name is Madeline O'Brien. What could she want from Connor and why is she sitting in his home? Parts are told from Madeline's POV from 2 years ago - she was a student and Dr. Nye was one of her professors. She suddenly disappeared without a trace. What happened? Did she leave on her own? Did something terrible happen to her? Parts are told from Connor's POV from 2 years ago.
I enjoyed getting pieces of the puzzle bits at a time as we slowly get the idea of the fuller picture of what truly happened. I enjoyed reading this novel from the different POVs and from the different timelines, and it worked well in the novel to grab your attention and make you draw your own ideas of what is going on and what happened 2 years ago. There were many shocking revelations and twists that I did not see coming!
A definite must read that you must go read right now! I'm looking forward to the next David Bell novel!
Kill All Your Darlings is a compelling thriller about a professor, a student and a stolen manuscript that closely mirrors a real life murder will keep readers guessing until the very last page. Bell is a master storyteller!
Talk about intriguing?! WoW! I loved this quick thriller it was intense from the very beginning!
Presenting with quite an original and intriguing premise, “Kill All Your Darlings” drew me in from the very first page and held me captive right up until the very last. In this newest David Bell thriller, a professional dilemma intermixes with murder and mayhem, resulting in one deliciously suspenseful and twisty ride! Boasting multiple players and potential plausible scenarios, I did come to suspect the true culprit prior to the actual reveal, though not until much later in the book, when the reveal itself drew closer. Personally, this is one of my favorite David Bell books to date. If you are a fan, as I am, no doubt, you will want to add this book to the top of your “must read” list!
This might be my favorite book written by David Bell. It really grabbed me from page one and held my attention until the very end. Character development was absolutely phenomenal, which really made me need to finish! Unique and realistic, which is my very favorite type of thriller! Fast-paced, unputdownable, thrilling, chilling, and shocking twisty ride of a book! I highly, highly recommend to my fellow thrill seekers, whether you’ve tried David Bell’s books or not! Word or advice, clear schedule prior to starting and make sure you don’t start at bed time, as you’ll be up way too late flipping pages!!!
Will buzz around platforms and use low Amazon reviewer number on release date!
This fast-paced thriller was so juicy and well written that I inhaled it! I loved The Request, so I’m glad I was not disappointed with this one. I really loved the depth and relatability of Connor and Madeline. I recommend this. It’s going to be a hit.

A missing college student. A murder of a local young woman. A professor's novel published with a similar murder as it's plot with details only the killer would know. The question is who is the killer?Campus life in a small Kentucky town is examined. Socializing between staff and students and what's crossing the line including sexual harassment. Women in a university setting. All of these issues are covered in a suspenseful manner with a few twists. I love the title and the KY setting.
