Firstly, I would like to thank Netgalley for providing me with an e-arc of the book. This review is based on my personal opinion and enjoyment of the book.
This was a fun bedtime story that I shared with my granddaughter. There is not a lot of text in the book, but the illustrations were wonderful. It starts with the frogs sneaking out of bed and goes on to show them engaging in all sorts of fantastical activities. The various costumes they wear to participate in things like jousting, or heading into space were a hoot. We talked a lot about the activities they were doing as she didn't know what jousting was and thought a frog riding an alligator was pretty funny. The illustrations had so much action, emotion and little things to look at that they added so much to this book. She wanted me to read it to her brothers when they came to pick her up and was constantly sharing with her little brother things we had talked about the night before. I will say that I had to read a couple of other books to settle her down so I could put her to bed, but this is definitely a winner for us.
This is so adorable! The froggies have so many excuses for why they are too busy to sleep, and the excuses get more and more creative as the book progresses. The star here, however, is the illustrations- so vibrant and full of energy, filled with hilarious details. Such a great bedtime story!

This story is a simple one. The froggies do all sorts of things to avoid sleep. Their activities grow increasingly silly as the book progresses. The text is sparse, stating the activities in simple terms. The illustrations are highly expressive, the poses flamboyant.
I love the illustrations and it is a cute story about the many things that the froggies want to do instead of sleeping. I am sure many parents can relate to this story with their own children.
This book is SOOO much FUN!. The froggies do not want to sleep, and this book shows us all the things they would rather do instead. This includes meeting aliens, jousting, and falling through clouds. What really brings this book to life is the amazing illustrations. They are all at once fun, bright, heartfelt, sometimes creepy, and the great narrator of this story. Buy this book and see how many times kids want to read it. This will be a book that gets worn out!.
This book was cute. I liked the illustrations a lot. I thought they really helped to move the story along. Froggie wants to stay up to do all kids of fun, silly activities. I think most kids will relate to not wanting to go to bed because there are so many fun things to do instead!
The Froggies do not want to sleep! They want to play the accordion, play dress-up with exquisite and increasingly ornate costumes, and even take off to outer space, just to avoid going to sleep. With a sprightly story and gorgeous illustrations, this is a book that will not only entertain as a bedtime story but will be a favorite for early readers.
Thanks to the publishers for sharing this one. I love the cute frogs and the bizarre stuff they are doing. I'd definitely read this aloud to preschoolers. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.
I received an electronic ARC from Charlesbridge through NetGalley.
These froggies have wild imaginations and a lot of energy. They do not want to sleep; instead they want to play all of the games and enjoy an adventure through various locations. The artwork emphasizes their eyes and the wild gleam in them as it is obvious they are fighting tiredness to keep having fun. In the end, they end up returning from their "travels" and end up asleep in their beds. Don't miss the last page surprise. Adventure, humor and... frogs. Young readers will love going along on this trip.
*thank you to Netgalley, Charlesbridge and Adam Gustavsson for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
2.5 stars.
I feel like this storyline has been done so often that it wasn't really original. The illustrations were nice enough but the story was just ok.
I would think that this is something that those who love frogs would enjoy but that's probably the only audience. That's just my opinion though and there wasn't anything really wrong with it.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book. This is a unique and incredibly imaginative take on the classic bed-time story. Those froggies don't want to go to sleep and they arrive at all sorts of reasons for postponing their snooze. (Not unlike the youngster being read to, I'm sure.) From burping contests to underwater ballet, to traveling in outer space, the froggies antics will delight the toddler to preschool age child. The illustrations are hilarious, the characters' expresssions larger than life and each scene delightfully detailed.
A funny well illustrated book that had my little one giggling. The froggies really do not want to sleep and get into all sorts of hilarious situations to stay awake much like all children.
This picture book was an absolute joy to look at! The illustrations are nothing short of gorgeous.
The story was wacky, in a fun and entertaining way, that keeps you on your toes! The vocabulary is different and unexpected in a good way. Overall this story resonated well, with my adventurous boy who firmly believes sleeping is nothing but a bore... but there is talk of monsters and aliens, so sensitive souls might find it unsettling right before bedtime.
My Thoughts
If you love frogs you will adore this book! Here are my pros and cons for The Froggies Do Not Want To Sleep:
Pros
1. The images are hilarious! This book is worth it just to see frogs in tutus performing an underwater ballet, frogs on unicycles, frogs jousting with plungers, and a number of other ridiculous things rather than sleeping.
2. The concept is pretty simple… it is just about frogs who come up with a bunch of things they’d rather be doing than sleeping! If you have a reluctant sleeper, this book of excuses might be familiar to them and to you! Perhaps this book could encourage kids to come up with a silly thing they’d rather be doing than sleeping. I mean, if the kiddos are going to try to think of ways to stay up anyway, perhaps exercising their imaginations might be at least a positive thing to do, right?
3. Spoiler to parents – the froggies do fall asleep at the end. 😊
Cons
1. It ended rather abruptly for me, but kids won’t care one bit.
Summary
There is no lesson here and no advice on how to get the froggies to go to sleep. It is simply a silly, fun adventure about what some frogs are doing to avoid getting some rest! Kids will love it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Charlesbridge Publishing for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily
I love the concept of this book: a group of frogs who try to get out of going to bed using increasingly imaginative excuses. Parents are already well versed in the usual suspects: another story, another glass of water… The froggies come up with much more interesting scenarios to postpone their bedtime.
Kids will love seeing these realistic frogs acting out a series of unrealistic froggish activities, from shooting themselves out of cannons while singing opera to flying spaceships.
The illustrations are very detailed, with some fun things to discover, like a frog who’s been drinking a bottle of Croak. Kids will enjoy the humour of the illustrations and may be inspired to come up with some better excuses themselves for why they can’t possibly go to sleep yet.
This book is marketed as a bedtime story and given it’s about frogs at bedtime, that should make sense. My reservation is that it’s not a soothing bedtime story. I’d expect kids to be more hyped up after having this book read to them, which defeats the purpose. I’d be testing this one out well before bedtime first to see how the kidlets respond.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Charlesbridge for the opportunity to read this book. I’m rounding up from 3.5 stars.
The illustrations throughout this book are absolutely great. I thought they were all fun and that many children would enjoy the antics of the frogs. I was especially amused when I saw one of the frogs was drinking what looked to be a Coke but it was labeled Croak. The different situations the frogs end up in and the illustrations that go with them actually remind me of the Pug books. The illustrations flow from page to page and are often connected to each other which was nice to see.
Now the story itself is rather short with only a couple of words on each page. This is definitely aimed towards the younger readers as the words are simple and short. It took no longer than a minute for me to read; however, I spent more time looking at the illustrations. The story follows the frogs as they play dress up, go jousting, ride alligators, go to space and discover aliens, and even fly through the clouds.
This is definitely a cute book for younger children and I think they’ll be entertained. Now I’m not quite sure if I would read this to children before going to sleep because personally, I would want to play dress up and discover aliens after reading this.
As well-explained in the back cover, here's a book for those who need excuses to skip sleeping. We all experienced a time when sleep is not necessary, our mind is still active dreaming and plotting. Why should we sleep? And the author gave ideas on how you should tell the older ones to avoid sleeping.
This book is adorable. Having a toddler that doesn't sleep, this book give so many adventures that the frogs go on to inspire her dreams. She also loved the book and the illustrations.
The title says it all: The Froggies do not want to sleep. They’re much too busy with various silly activities, starting with the already humorous pursuit of accordion-playing and building up to more ridiculous adventures like opera singing while firing themselves out of cannons and battling space monsters. Sure, there are already countless bedtime books out there featuring energetic, imaginative protagonists who just want to avoid sleeping, but this one stands out due to the intricately vivid illustrations in gouache and watercolor. While the froggies’ personalities may be anthropomorphized, their appearances are actually fairly realistic, and their long, skinny legs and huge, yellow eyes add an extra element of humor to the story. All outdoor, underwater, and space scenes feature colorful and detailed backdrops. Despite its fairly cliched storyline, this is a highly entertaining book that I would recommend as a bedtime story or as a good library storytime book when the theme is bedtime or frogs.
