A woman is found by the side of a road. Her injuries are consistent with jumping or being thrown from a car. She has amnesia but adopts the name Sophie and hides away at a remote house being renovated. Can she find out the truth about her identity and is she in danger?
The Silent Girl is an atmospheric psychological thriller. We as readers do not know any more than Sophie so the gradually developing plot brings us along with the main character. The narrative is written in the first person so we are witness to Sophie's gradual remembering of her past.
Sophie learns to trust again through a developing friendship and then romance with Nathaniel, caretaker of Dovemorn House. The gentle love was the highlight of the book for me, obviously restricted by Sophie's lack of knowledge of herself and her circumstances. Their relationship is further complicated by Nathaniel's son and ex wife which gave a realism and personal touch to the story.
The descriptions of the setting are particularly good and add to the sinister feeling to the book. There is the added mystery of the disappearance of the previous owner of Dovemorn House a century ago and I wish this had been developed further.
The Silent Girl has plenty of mystery and is driven by the main character's desire to find the truth about her past
I was desperate to read this when I read the premise. Waking up in hospital with multiple injuries, no idea how you got there, but with a feeling you need to be scared. Psychological thriller heaven. This story is a little slow to start but in time you will be hooked by the gothic undertones and rooting for the main character.
I found the first part a little hard to stick with but then was consumed. Definitely worth sticking with.
So good. This cover is stunning and, if you can believe it, the writing is even better. I loved this story and would read others by this author.
AWESOME phycological thriller, a well written storyline with very likable characters, keeping the suspense high until the great wrap up. First time reading this author , enjoyed this book totally & RECOMMEND highly. Will be on the look out for more from Kelly. Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for this ARC in return for my honest review.
The book starts off slowly. Our protagonist has no idea who she is or how she ended up left to die on the side of the road, but she knows she is afraid of something...or someone. With Nathaniel's help, she slowly starts rebuilding her life only to have it fall apart again, and this time, she may not be the only one getting hurt.
Initially, I found it a bit hard to get into the book, but Sophie wormed her way in inch by inch and I was then hooked. It is not a quick read, but it is one you will enjoy if you have the time.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
A well paced, well written thriller. “Sophie” wakes up after being hospitalised for injuries sustained some how. Found on the side of the road with multiple wounds and flowers in her hair she has no memory of how she got there, but it is very apparent she is in danger. There was an eerie, gothic feel to the book and there were parts that were a little slower than others. Sophie didn’t seem to worried at times about what was happening - I think there should have been some serious mental anguish as a result! But overall a good read.
Waking with very little memory in a hospital bed, broken, abused and abandoned 'Sophie' has to start her life again....but her life had not been full of happiness. Thankfully, she meets some people who help her along; unfortunately, she meets some unsavoury characters who almost bring an end to her new life. Loved this book and found I was reading at every opportunity.
The Silent Girl has a very interesting premise, and the gothic setting of an abandoned, run down mansion definitely added a lot of imagery and suspence to the plot. The slight hints at paranormal involvement were interesting but underutilised, as was the setting, however, the mystery and slowly unravelling who our protagonist is was what really keeps the story moving. The short chapters are a definite plus to the narrative, again helping to keep the narrative quick paced and the characters are likable, even if they are flawed.
Imagine waking up in a hospital with no idea who you are, what your name is, or why you're laying in a hospital bed. That's what happened to a young woman who dubs herself as Sophie before her true name is revealed to her later on. I really liked the premise of this and it kept me interested in finding out more about this girl with an unknown past to both her and the investigators trying to figure out why she was dumped on the side of the road. This is full of intrigue and suspense that keeps you on your toes. It is very atmospheric, with many of the scenes set in an old haunted mansion, and who doesn't love that? I enjoyed this book a lot and was very interested in learning about Sophie's past leading up to the accident. It was a bit slow paced at first but the latter half of the book really ramps up in drama. I thought some of the decisions Sophie made were naïve and misguided but did fall in line with the broken person she was. Overall, the only character I truly liked was Nathaniel but I was still rooting for Sophie until the very end. It was an entertaining read.
I received an ARC of this suspense novel from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I will look forward to reading more from this author.
I was hooked from the very first page. The story unfolds in a way that grips your attention and keeps you constantly thinking about it. A fantastic read that keeps the suspense high until the last page.
A well-thought-out plot with complex and developed characters. A fast-paced thriller with plenty of mystery, suspense, twists, and turns.
A compellingly good read that keeps you invested from start to finish.
I would definitely recommend it. Can’t wait to read more from Kelly Heard.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this advanced reader's copy.
Uhhh no. I DID NOT like this book at all. It was a huge disappointment! It fails to grab the attention of the readers. The story's not even that gripping as it has been mentioned in the synopsis. It was so slow-paced that I thought of not finishing it at several points. But I kept on reading, hoping that the ending would make up for the initial part. But the ending was a let down too. Huh 😶
Let me tell y'all, this book actually starts capturing your attention after about 50%.
The first half of the story is just random blabbering with no interesting details.
There are no twists or turns and the whole story is quite predictable. Also, the protagonist lives in an old house which has a dark past, and which has little or no connection with the overall story. I think that the author could've done a lot better with the plot.
It took me 9 days to finish this book 😳 that's probably the longest I've taken to finish a book.
I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more from her in the future.
The main character Sophie is well fleshed out and well written. The premise and story is written to draw the reader in from the very first page.
This is a suspenseful and intriguing read with mystery added in.
I always like a well done, I’m not sure who I am thriller and am glad this one lived up to the blurb. Jane Doe/Sophie wakes up in a hospital not knowing how she got there or who she is yet she fears someone is after her. She ends up at Dovemorn house, a supposedly haunted house, so she can hide from her past.
There is the mystery of Sophie’s background and the mystery of Dovemorn and the grounds. I was engrossed in both. I like that while you don’t know much about Sophie’s background, she is a complex character. Thrillers are usually plot driven but the author took the time to let us know Sophie. And I loved reading about her releasing stress in her drawing.
I would’ve liked a better wrap up on the Dovemorn mystery, but that is the only thing I would change.
The silent girl is an engaging triller with an interesting female character and her way of discovering who she is and what happened in her past.
As she has no memory of her name and where she comes from, when she works up in a hospital bed, she decides to call herself Sophie.
From here on , we get immersed into a story full of interesting twists and suspenseful moments, with a few intriguing characters and even a beginning of a romance story.
I enjoyed this story. It’s a fast paced one, where the author is adding lots of pieces of the puzzle throughout the story and the final chapter is a great way to end the book.
Not only does a woman who decides to call herself Sophie wake up in a hospital bed to discover that she has endured serious physical injuries, including being stabbed, it becomes apparent that she has no memory. No idea who she is and why she learns that she was left for dead. The only snippet of memory that Sophie has is the first name of her brother. Quite naturally, Sophie desperately wants to find him and also wants to find any clues to her identity and past.
After some time in the hospital, growing no closer to her identity, Sophie takes a job working at a mansion, one with a dark past. Now working for a man named Nathaniel, Sophie reaches for a feeling of safety, as the has an unexplained sense of foreboding. As time passes, Sophie's living at the isolated mansion she is working to restore comes with a sense of eeriness. In fact, this novel begins to thread together the mystery behind Sophie's past, but also regarding the past of the mansion, thus lending a gothic feel to this story. As Sophie begins to draw close to Nathaniel and to his young son, she has no idea how close she is to danger, especially should her memory be restored.
The character development in this book was spot on. Readers get a good feel of Sophie's nature, despite whatever connections she has in life that led to her circumstances. Nathaniel's character was excellent as well, as his goodness shined through despite his difficult past. I also enjoyed Nathaniel's son Lincoln. He was the bright light in this story.
The Silent Girl is an engaging and thrilling read, filled with dark suspense and even a bit of spookiness. What is more is that the twists and turns in this book really caught me by surprise. While reading this book, there was no doubt that Sophie would eventually regain her memory, especially due to the fact that she was nearly murdered. The road to these discoveries proved to be shocking, thus leading to a tension filled ending that had me on he edge of my seat.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Imagine being found on the side of the road with flowers in your hair, beaten badly and a few days later, you wake up with no memory of who you are. That is what happened to Sophie and it becomes apparent rather quickly, that she is in danger. She starts to remember things from her childhood and she knows she has a brother named Miles and she has strong emotions about him. After the doctors and police give her permission to leave the hospital, she must find food and shelter. Sophie lands a job at an historic home, that is known to be haunted, as a landscaper. She develops a relationship of sorts with the overseer and his son. As the chapters continue, she slowly gains more memories and her continued thoughts of her brother become stronger. She is certain that she needs to find him and that he will resolve everything.
For someone who woke up with that kind-of trauma and not knowing you are, I thought Sophie would be a bit more disturbed and concerned about her well-being. She wasn’t and I found that to be strange for this type of story. The reader is shown glimpses of her apparent personality as the story unfolds but you’re still not sure who she really is and what she has gotten herself involved with.
I did like many of the aspects of the story but felt things weren’t fleshed out at a good pace throughout book and the whole “haunted house” part seemed contrived. Twist and turns in a thriller are important but sometimes those can take too many turns before you start to totally veer off in the wrong different. There were times, I began to wonder if that was happening. But then everything falls in your lap at the conclusion.
Despite those issues, I kept on reading because I needed to know what was going on and who she really was!

First, I want to thank Kelly Heard, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
Buckle up and hold on tight because Kelly Heard is going to take you on a rollercoaster ride in The Silent Girl!! WOW!! I was totally intrigued at the beginning of the book but-WOW-did she throw a many curveballs I was flabbergasted about!! This must read book is intense, thrilling, shocking, and suspenseful.
This book is dedicated to Isla Jane: she just adores her imagination, her willfulness, and her incandescence. The world needs her fire-don’t let anyone tame it (I love this).
Kelly Heard has to be commended for creating such a fascinating story that went places most authors have not gone before. Her verbiage and the attention to details in the graphic scenes were so vivid. At times I felt what the character was feeling that is how real it seemed.
Sophia’s story pulled on my heartstrings many times throughout the book. I can’t imagine losing your memory after a tragic accident. How scary it would be living in this world not knowing where your siblings were. I truly found this aspect of the story fascinating.
The Silent Girl had a lot of shocking moments and I mean a lot of them! One scene scared me to death for a character I adored. I was at the edge of my comfy chair praying all would turn out ok!
No twist in any story I have read was more shocking than this one!! None!! You think you know someone but you have no idea who they really are! This scene was like something ripped from the headlines or even a movie! It was just so crazy good! I was shaking my head! I can’t believe she went there with this character!
This book read like a movie playing in my head! I think it would be a great fit for Lifetime Channel!
This book has a great premise and completely reels you in, wanting to know what happens next. Sophie wakes up in a hospital not knowing who she is or how she got there. She is the victim of a violent crime and when released from the hospital takes refuge in an old estate working to help clear it up and get it ready to be inhabited again. What follows is tale of intrigue, my tery and romance as Sophie tries to figure out who she is and where she came from, while trying to avoid others since she doesn't remember where or who the danger comes from.
Although the premise was gripping and I read this in one sitting, wanting to unravel the mystery, there were some real problems with the executions. The passing of time was hard to follow here, and somewhat unrealistic. She spends three weeks in a hospital but her her first time talking with the police is at the end of her second week. Then there were periods where time would pass, and someone would make a reference so that you knew it was a month later, but because of other references, it doesn't seem like it could have been a month and it also seems like relationships would have been further developed during the time that has passed. I struggled a bit with whether to give this 4 or 3 stars, but in the end I liked how original it was, and that the ending wasn't obvious from the beginning.
The author does a good job of creating suspense and intrigue and sending off red herrings - it's rare for me not to figure out an ending in advance and although I did finally guess it - it took a long time before I got there and I definitely enjoyed reading to try and figure it out. If you like suspense and intrigue, then this is definitely worth your time- it's a unique story.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy. I voluntarily left an honest review of this book.
Beautiful. Poignant. Thrilling. Tense. Fast paced. Addictive. This book is quite something. A must read from an author to watch, admire, adore.
I want to thank NetGalley, Bookouture, and Kelly Heard for my e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Rating: 3/5
I was excited to read this book because of the title. As a speech-language pathologist, I am always interested in anything related to my field! I wondered if she would have been in a coma or mute after trauma. Don’t worry no spoilers here!
The plot was very original, which I enjoyed. I was rooting for Sophie even though I was unsure who she was prior to her trauma. The small twists were surprising. The rest of the book; however, was a slow burn! The ending was predictable to a point.
Overall, it was an enjoyable thriller. I would recommend for someone new to thrillers!
