I really like this series. Each story is action packed, funny and I really love all the characters. In this story it’s mostly about Agatha and Jacoby. I absolutely adore Agatha and I’m glad she finally got a story. Of course my favorites Elle and Alex still play a huge part but it’s nice to see shy Agatha come out of her shell. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I found it difficult to pick up from the last instalment.
Also the graphics at the end of each chapter were a bit off putting.
Elle has finally found her true love, but when Alec goes missing it is Elle who must search for him in the Faerie Lands. Elle may even need to delve into her alternate template to save Alec. Will Elle become a genie? Agatha, on the other hand, has never had an issue being Elle’s evil stepsister, but her life template is also trying to change. Instead of an evil stepsister, her life template wants her to become an evil elf queen. Agatha doesn’t want to make that change, but if she refuses the crown, she might also have to give up the elf prince, Jacoby. What will Agatha do?
Fire and Cinder is the seventh book in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series (at least according to Goodreads). These books are fun to read and short enough to be completed in one sitting. I love reading fairy tale re-tellings and this series is great. This story takes the characters to new depths and it is amazing what twists Bauer can write into her storylines. There are two more books in this series slated to be released this year. I will be reading them as soon as I can.
ARC provided by Netgalley. Thank you!
We get to join Elle in her quest to save Alec. This book have multiple POV from Elle, Agatha, Jacoby, and much later, Alec. We are in for a ride, there is not a dull moment. I read this rather quickly and have a fairly good time. And for whichever character we portrayed to be, its still us deep inside, and that is what matters most.
I'm new to Bauer's work and Magicorum, but its not very hard to dive in the universe. While I'm loving the fresh writing style, I don't feel myself very connected to Elle and other characters involved, but maybe its just me.
In conclusion, this book is a fresh ride and quick read for those who love fairytale retellings!
I am torn about Agatha. I was liking her hiding and letting everyone think she was just Agatha. I liked this because it let her be who she wanted to be and everyone left her alone. I didn’t like the way her mom and sister treated her but even after it was found out she was the last of the Moon elves they still treated her poorly so either way they were terrible people. Do I like her as an elf? Yes I think she grew into her own and settled more but I think she was having a hard time at first adjusting. Jacoby was there every step of the way and that was my favorite part. He was truly awesome in this book with how he was towards Agatha and how he took it slow with her. Cinder doesn’t seem her normal confident self when this story begins. She is feeling lost and alone. When she finally gets herself together we see the Cinder of old and it was awesome.
This book has two plots that intertwine together. We have Agatha and her elf powers and how others want her for something and we have Cinder and her desire to find Alec..Along the way they both find out more about themselves and face tough decisions. Agatha’s journey is one where she learns to trust Jacoby and herself with her new powers. where she lets go of the past and embraces her future and who she is. For Cinder she has to learn who she is and where she belongs. In the end when the battle begins, these two are faced with tough choices. Agatha with keeping an Evil being from destroying everything and becoming all powerful. Cinder is faced with stopping that as well but in a different way. Agatha is what can create the power and Cinder can fight to keep the evil from taking hold of Agatha and force her to do something against her will.
The romance in the book is sweet. I love how Jacoby slowly shows Agatha who he is and gains her trust. He protects her with everything he is and in the end they end up needing their love to fight the evil.
The story was fast paced and fun. There wasn’t alot of drama or angst but journeys for our main characters. Journeys to find themselves and where they belong. Cinder’s decision in the end was just as brave as Agatha’s fight and was selfless as well. A great tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more.
I like the expanded storyline, where we get to know Agatha & Jacoby better. We still have Elle and Alec of course., and the trials they are going through. I like the retelling of fairy tales and the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum is a good series. I do speed through them.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am really enjoying this series they are a new and definitely different take on old fairy tales. I really loved agathas story and her dark elf is awesome. I am looking forward to finding out what’s next in this wonderful series.
This is a great and, at times, hilarious, take on the classic fairytale and I loved the novel. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy.
I really enjoyed reading this book, I've enjoyed reading the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum from the beginning. This story has the characters that I care for and make sure that the plot doesn't become stale. I left me wanting more from the series and I look forward to reading more from the author.
I was granted an eARC of Fire and Cinder via NetGalley as part of my participation in the March 2021 blog tour with XPresso Book Tours. Thank you to all involved! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Elle is on a quest to save Alec. Jacoby finds himself needing to save Agatha. Powers are being stolen, motives are being questioned, and genies are trying to recruit new genies. It's insanity! It's the risk you take going back into Faerie.
I'll start off by saying I am not completely caught up on this particular series yet, though I have read and reviewed other Christina Baeuer books, and if you're already familiar with the way she writes you can jump into this book and enjoy it for what it is without reading all the previous books. Would it be a BETTER experience if you're caught up? Probably. Cannot confirm. I'm definitely reminded more of the Pixieland Diaries books than any of the Angelbound books reading this one, and that's a great thing for me because I adore the Pixieland books. The way Elle and Agatha speak and think is a lot like Calla, so if you love Pixieland you'll love the Magicorum.
I love how light, humorous, and fun this book is. It doesn't take itself too seriously (because the characters don't either.) Yo Momma jokes with a minotor? Yes please! That's hilarious. This book is so fun and easy to read that you'll absolutely fly through it. Despite being over 320 pages and the fact that I had four different books going at once, I finished this one in less than 24 hours.
Now, the characters I love so much because they remind me of Calla and the Pixieland books are also why this one isn't a perfect 5 stars for me. First of all, it's both exciting and satisfying but also disappointing to feel like Elle and Calla are the same character. They're not, they have their differences, but I was so strongly reminded of Calla reading this book than I've ever been reading the Angelbound series, which tells me Christina Bauer's characters CAN be very different from one another, yet main characters in this series and Pixieland feel very similar. They also feel flat. Fun, for sure. Likeable. But I don't feel like most of these characters actually completed an arc in this book. They went on an adventure, lives were saved, bonds were formed, but the characters in the last 20 pages feel very much like the characters in the first 20 pages.
If you like any of Christina Bauer's other work but particularly the Pixieland books, read this series! If you like YA fantasy, read this series!
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book!
I’ve always been a huge fan of Christina Bauer’s books and this did not disappoint! I think it would’ve helped me a lot to read the books preceding this one for this series but it had all the flare and spice that are normally in her books. It’s a must read and I highly recommend her other series and books as well!!!
I’m so excited to have dived back into the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum world! I have shared reviews of the last 2 books in the series so please check them out 😊
“Welcome to the new normal at Chez Elle.”
Our “don’t call me that” Cinderella, Elle’s life template is changing and in order to save those around her, must she kickstart it into action?
This is a retelling that’s just so easy to read and enjoy. New characters are introduced whilst old friends (and enemies) are referenced back to how we know them and it all just makes the series such a joy.
Elle takes to being relatable oh so hard in Fire & Cinder. She’s funny and self deprecating and dealing with an oh so big life altering problem. Everything points to her switching from Cinderella, to becoming a genie in an Aladdin life template.
“It was love at first felony.”
We’re also still following along with Elle’s evil stepsister Agatha and elf prince Jacoby. The artwork included from the last book is as gorgeous as ever and helps when imagining the characters and dark creatures. Lady Cloake and the shadow morphs are just, chefs kiss.
Plague doctors, talking minotaurs, harpies, thank you to Christina for making interesting enemies that I can obnoxiously root for but still wish the best for Elle.
The only slight fault I found with this read was that it’s just too short! I love the airy and easy vibe so maybe I’m just greedy but I want more! I love this world and want to be snuggled into it forever more.
You know that feeling you get when everything is in pieces but there’s only a few pages left and you think there’s no possible way to fix everything in time? Yeah, that’s how the end of this book feels. For a second, Bauer really had me worried there.
Although this book was short, there’s an addictive quality to Bauer’s books. Once I start reading one, I can’t stop reading until I’m done. When a book can addict you like this, especially when it’s not even the author’s best, you know you’ve found a good series!!! I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
And now it’s time for the part I hate: the negative qualities. I was again disappointed with the quality of this book. The character development was still lacking, which is a true shame. If the book was longer, I’m sure she could’ve done better with shaping and forming Agatha and Jacoby. I didn’t feel as though they were fully developed in the last book, and I still feel that way. Although I love their dynamic, I feel as if I barely know them as characters. With a little more character-development, they could be one of the best couples in this series.
Bauer also dumped all these new creatures on readers and it was difficult to keep track of everything. In other words, the world-building could’ve been better. The problem here is that the book needs to be longer. If there was more content, these things could be worked on. I also thought that some scenes were too short, and I would’ve liked some more development of the action - a problem easily fixed by extending things.
I guess you could take this as a compliment to the author when I say that I want more content in the book. I want to read more of her writing!!! I know that Christina Bauer can do better - I’ve seen better from her!
Elle is turning into kind of a wimpy character. I never liked Elle as well as Bry and her stories at the beginning of the series. As the book opens Elle wants to rescue Alec but she has sort of given up and fallen into overeating fast food.
Skye, a genie, is trying to recruit Elle. Alec is locked away in a gem prison. Agatha is staying in the abandoned Cynder Mercantile. Jacoby is determined to get to know Agatha better. Nal’Adel wants to take over all of Faerie, and she is gaining ground.
There are many suspenseful moments as Fire and Cinder progresses where you wonder if relative good will prevail. The climax is exciting.
I enjoyed the pictures that have been added to the series. I am glad the author started following both Alec and Elle and Agatha and Jacoby in this story. The multiple perspectives expands your view of the Magoricum world.
Elle has just found out that her boyfriend Alec Le Charme, the prince of a jewelry dynasty has been taken away to the Faerie Lands. Elle will do whatever it takes to get him back even if it means switching her life template from Cinderella to Aladdin. Elle leaves behind a message letting her friends know where she is just in case she doesn’t make it back.
When Elle enters the place where Alec is, she starts to relive bits and pieces of her past not knowing exactly what is real and what is not. I saw the place where Alec is as maybe being inside your own head. Like there was some kind of magic-making them relive their past whether it be real or imagined or made up. Like you had to make it through your own head without going insane to escape, maybe? I saw Alec’s prison as a dark, eerie, and dreary place filled with mist all around with visibility being almost nil.
Fire and Cinder is told different points of view going from past to present and maybe even the imaginary. Fire and Cinder had more than one tale to tell. I saw a message hidden among all its words. A message of self-discovery or maybe a way not to go insane by escaping your own reality. Crazy or not? What do you think? I am still pondering this one.
WOW! What a great story! Fire and Cinder pulled me into its depths from the first word and it is still with me long after I read the last word. I have truly enjoyed reading Elle and Alec’s story. Their story will stay with me for years to come tucked away in some corner of my mind to be pulled out once in a while to apply to my own life from time to time.
I definitely highly recommend Fire and Cinder to anyone who likes fairy tale re-telling and magical worlds. One-click your copy of Fire and Cinder today!
The premise for this book really grabbed my attention. People living in a world like ours (New York City to be precise), are enchanted to conform to fairy tales templates. Ella is meant to be a Cinderella, but she has more in common with Aladdin as one of her hobbies is stealing and returning stolen gems. Her stepsister Agatha is meant to be the ugly stepsister, but she is really a changeling fairy queen. In this book, Ella must rescue her prince, and Agatha must escape the evil magical people who want to use her to gain more power.
I love the idea of the templates that they must conform to fighting against their own identities. Yet for some reason I can’t explain I don’t feel like the novel was really about that. Ella has pretty much accepted that she doesn’t want to be a Cinderella, Agatha is still feeling the bad influence of her mother and sister, but she has already decided she wants to be free of them. In that sense, there is little character development. They must learn to use their magical powers, and that too is too easy. They go from barely being able to sense their power to wielding it easily with nearly nothing in between.
I enjoyed the non-stop action. This book is jam-packed with stuff: intersecting quests, needing to fight one monster after another. I also liked the voices of the character, all in the first person and almost conversational.
Sadly, this book never really caught my attention. It’s like I was always waiting for something that never happened. I was not emotionally engaged, which is disappointing because I thought the story itself was interesting, but I never really learned to care for the characters. There could have been an emotional pay-off after the final battle, but magic was used to make everything better and negate all the losses.
Basically my verdict on this book is neutral: I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it.
I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This book was very unique and I enjoyed it quite a bit but, I feel like you need to read the previous books before reading this one. All in All I really enjoyed the book.
Another enjoyable read in the Magicorum, where the fate of the world falls into the hands of a few. This novel has 4 points of view, Elle, Alec, Agatha, and Jacoby. Continuing where the previous novel left off, Elle is desperate to find Alec, the man she loves, who has be imprisoned. Elle has trouble controlling her fairy magic, which leads to some unexpected results. But Elle is determined and she will use everything at her disposal, even if it means not following the Cinderella template. Agatha has her own troubles, between her family and Jacoby. Agatha does not want to accept who she is, even though she plays an important role. But Jacoby stands by Agatha, and they grow closer. All four of these characters have their own paths to follow, but all will be needed to determine the fate of the Magicorum. And one will have to make a great sacrifice to prevent the evil uprising.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
We rejoin Elle, languishing in her flat, mourning the disappearance of her boyfriend Alec. Despite it having been reported that he is dead,,this is not the case. Alec has been taken prisoner by Nal'Adel, so Elle decided to set off to rescue Alec.
Elle manages to give herself a stern talking to and sets off to rescue her love, Alec.
While Elle is off following the power of her magic, we also meet up with Agatha again, who despite all her misgivings, looks forwards to her coffee non-dates with Jacoby.
Despite everything her mother & sister said about Agatha, she is indeed a force to be reckoned with
This book has everything you could hope for, a fast moving story line & the engrossing tale of good overcoming evil.
I'm already looking forward to see what comes next in Fairies & Frosting.
Who could have guessed another Fairy Tales of the Magicorum book would be out so soon after the last? Not me! But I'm excited for it nonetheless. I couldn't wait to see what our heroes would get up to this time, and wasted no time starting it, especially after the events of the last book. If you know me, you know I fully enjoy this series. It's perfect for anyone looking for a quick read to break up the other books on your schedule, and doesn't usually disappoint.
Following Elle, Agatha, Alec and Jacoby in this book, we find Elle in her house eating pizza to cope with the loss of her boyfriend, Alec, who's been transported into a magical gemstone prison by an evil fae. She feels like she can't control her magic enough to go and save him, but knows she needs to do something, and in the meantime, she needs to take care of herself too. But after that, she accidentally sends herself back in time to see her mom and her in her childhood home. This sets off a chain of events that also sets the pace for the rest of the book.
Agatha, on the other hand, just wants to go back to her normal life but without her mother and sister, before she found out all the things she didn't know about herself and her ties to the fae world, like the fact that she's the last of a missing species and the only one who can save their world. She doesn't mind the new obsession that Jacoby has developed with her, though, she even has started to like having him around. But she would never tell him that, of course.
The boys however are kind of backup characters for this book. I feel like the spotlight is mostly on the girls, occasionally showing what the boys are thinking to help the story move along. I really enjoyed reading this, and the ending! Wow. That's all I have to say about that, this is a no spoiler review blog after all. But let me tell you, when the action starts, it really all goes down at once. Will he girls be able to save the fae world and the people that they care about? You'll have to read to find out!
This was a very easy and relaxing read for me, and I really enjoy getting thrown back into this series whenever there's a new book out. The writing is funny and quirky, lots of silly little jokes tossed in there to liven it up, but when it comes down to it, there really are some important and serious things that happen in this book and those don't take away from that. I think this was a very nice addition to the series, an I'm hoping for more Bryar Rose appearances in the future, maybe even another book from her point of view. Like always I love the characters because of how silly and realistic they are despite their magic abilities and the obvious differences between our worlds, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
