When Gemma’s husband, Danny, goes missing, Gemma is concerned. She waits for him to return. But when he doesn’t, Gemma notifies the authorities. There are also missing/murdered men in the area who have a striking resemblance to Danny.
When the police begin their investigation for Danny, they soon realize he resembles the missing men. Quickly Gemma comes into the crosshairs of the investigation.
The story alternates from Gemma’s point of view and the investigators, which kept me guessing. The story moves swiftly with plenty of surprising plot twists to satisfy any mystery lover.
After reading the synopsis, I was so excited for this book. I quickly discovered that I was underwhelmed and it wasn’t for me, I had a hard time getting into it and found myself putting it down and enjoying other books and coming back to it so it took me a long time to finish. I’m sure others will love this one but it just wasn’t my favorite.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
Newlyweds Gemma and Danny are about to embark on an exciting time in their lives. Gemma is a free lance journalist and Danny has just taken a new IT job.
They have moved from London to a pretty house in Bristol. Could life get any better? Then, Danny disappears. The police begin investigating and try to determine whether or not Danny has become the third homicide victim of a serial killer.
When the police begin to focus the investigation on Gemma you can’t help wondering if she is a killer or if Danny is gaslighting her.
Gemma is a likable character and you want to believe her story but some things don’t add up. She starts to pursue her own investigation by seeking out Danny’s cousin. This just complicates matters and causes the police to become more suspicious of her.
The storyline makes you want to keep reading just to see how everything comes out in the end. You might be able to figure out the ending but the reasons for it may surprise you.
If I were Gemma, I would always be watching my back. I don’t think I would
ever feel safe again.
I have a love/hate relationship with The Perfect Couple. I had read Jackie Kabler's prior novel, Am I Guilty, and really enjoyed it. This one did not quite meet those same expectations. Although the premise was a good idea and plausible, it seemed our main character, Gemma was not a strong female lead. Her husband had gone missing and she sought out the help of the local police. In doing so, she immediately became a suspect in his disappearance. What ensues is her attempt at proving her innocence while trying to find out what happened to her husband, Danny.
Meanwhile, there are 4 unsolved murders and the police are trying to determine if Danny's disappearance is linked to the murders and what role is Gemma playing?
Overall, a good book, just not a great book. It's still worth the read if you have the time. I was given a copy of this title in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to #netgalley for this copy. It was originally published in April of 2020.
While not a new premise, Kabler does bring some new elements to “the husband gone missing story”. It was a quick entertaining story, but quite unbelievable as well. Gemma is a likable protagonist, but is she a reliable narrator? Evidence is pointing in her direction, but could the bumbling police force be wrong? Were Gemma and Danny the perfect couple or does is there a different story behind closed doors?
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my advanced copy. Unfortunately I just could not get into this book. 30% in and it is just way too slow moving for me.
Perfect couple.. I think not.
This book had many features of a thriller I enjoy. The cop banter was fun and spot on, I loved the relationship they had. The author does a decent job at making you question everyone, not knowing who to point the finger at. I love when a thriller can keep you on your toes.
While I had things figured out pretty early, I was still eager to get to the end to see if I was right. I enjoyed the right to get there.
This book overall was an easy read and one I would have picked up in the store.
Eh this wasn't my favorite. The overall plot was okay, so I stuck with it, but I didn't like the characters and I feel like the story line is just over done. I feel like authors lately want to capitalize on the success they see in other story lines and it just gets boring.
I loved this story so much. I'm a huge fan of domestic thrillers and this one hit the mark. I devoured it.
I was sucked in from the very first page, and the thrilling plot kept me spellbound until the very last page.
I really enjoyed the chapters flicking between the main character, Gemma & the detectives working the case.
This is an enjoyable, twisty mystery with one of those endings that makes you shudder.
Wow! What was that? I’ve been in a thriller slump for a while so I hesitated to read another to add to the pile, but this one almost makes me wanna use the head exploding emoji! I went into it blindly and figured it was gonna be just another “who done it” but I was way off! It was engrossing, twisted and I read it in less than 24 hours because I could. Not. Stop. Reading!
Gemma comes home from work one day to find her husband missing. She thinks he’s just working late or something but doesn’t think too much of it until she still hasn’t heard from him days later. She goes to report him missing to the police and she discovers that the police are investigating the murder of two local men that look like her husband. Clues start to point to Gemma, especially since none of the neighbors in their new house have ever seen him. She starts to realize as she tries to prove her innocence that their all relationships aren’t perfect, but hers even more so. I don’t want to give away much more of the plot, but dang the oh my stars moments just kept coming! My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that Gemma was a journalist but she comes across as kind of naive and flustered. I guess if I was in her situation I wouldn’t think straight either. I was definitely invested in the story and will recommend this one!!
Thanks to the One More Chapter and Netgalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
This thriller/mystery was gripping and kept me hooked from the moment I started reading it. It was slow at times but I kept wanting to know what’s happening next and I love all the twists and turns on this story. Anyone interested in mysteries should definitely pick this one up.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC.
4 Stars!
Read this book in 1 night. Highly recommend this book.
It's a twisty, gripping, psychological, thriller and mystery. The author keeps you guessing right until the end.
The Perfect Couple - Nine times out of ten it is anything but perfect. The Perfect Couple on the outside looks great but on the inside it's a crumbling mess.
3.5 Stars
This was my first book by Jackie Kabler and it was a wild ride. I was really liking the first half of the book and was sucked in by the missing husband plot...But then things kinda got a little crazy and hard to believe....And just when I thought it couldn't get any crazier...It did. But in a really weird way I enjoyed this book, it is not my usual type of thing but I felt a little something for poor Gemma with her missing husband and then being under suspicion for it. How frustrating that would be.
This book has a lot of twists and turns and there are some very strange characters in this story, some you love and some you love to hate. What I liked most was that I didn't figure out the who or why but I did know what the epilogue was gonna be before it happened. I wonder if Ms Kabler is going to write a book two about this? I would read it, just to see how Gemma and her family is doing in the future.
Was this a quick read because I couldn’t put it down or that it was just a short book? No idea, but it was a marathon read because of all the twists that appeared in every new chapter.
The main character, Gemma, newly married moves to a new city: perfect house, new pup and after returning from a business trip discovers that her husband has disappeared. Fraught with worry, she goes to the police and that’s where it starts to go downhill for her. Apparently no one in the neighborhood has ever seen this husband, he never started his new job and there is no trace of him anywhere.
When she feels that not enough is being done to find him uses her previous skills as a news reporter to find him herself. It soon becomes apparent there have been few secrets not shared between the couple.
Needless to say she becomes the main suspect; add in a serial killer possibility, some testy interpersonal relationships, an abusive childhood history, a mysterious husband with too many secrets and you have an exciting thriller you’ll be happy to spend an afternoon with.
This is a solid psychological crime thriller. I enjoyed the different POV from Gemma, and the detectives. I also enjoyed that it kept me guessing. I even thought for second Gemma was crazy. This book was full of twists and turns. Also thanks but no thanks for the ending. What a heart attack but then not. so yea.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone that likes thrillers especially because it seemed like a fast read.
This book started off strong and had a lot of potential, but just didn’t do it for me. So much unnecessary repetitiveness and internal monologue. I found it to be fairly predictable and ended up skimming a lot. I don’t want to give away much, but I was so frustrated with the detectives and their so called “investigation.” I feel like they missed so many obvious facts it just didn’t seem realistic. I think the author started with a good idea, but it just didn’t work.
Sincere thanks to Netgalley and Harper 360 for this advanced copy!
I first of all, thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy of this novel. I have never read any other book by this author, but the description of this book intrigued me. Danny and Gemmas marriage is full of secrets, even secrets from each other. When Danny disappears with no trace, Gemma is frantic and goes to the police. Danny leaves behind very few footprints, even in their own home though. And Gemma must face that she may know even less than she thought about her happy marriage.
I think this read was very suspenseful. You gain suspicions about a character and a plot twist will throw you into a new theory. I really enjoyed this book. Thankyou for the copy
Gemma comes home from a business trip expecting her husband to be anxiously waiting on her. However, when she arrives home, Danny, her husband, is nowhere to be found. Gemma tries to email him and anxiously awaits for him to return home from a busy day at work. After several days of waiting, she goes to the police to file a missing report.
Little does Gemma know, that there are several other men that resemble her husband killed nearby. The police try to link Gemma to the disappearance of her husband and later to the other missing men. Gemma is accused of being a serial killer.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I enjoyed the suspense and thrill of the book. The author kept me hooked until the very end. However, I was disappointed with the ending of the book. Personally, I did not like the end of the book and found it unexpected.
I wanted to like this book based on the synopsis but it was ridiculously predictable. The beginning started off strong and I was getting a good vibe but ultimately the story was not able to keep it’s pace. The only way I can explain the middle of the book is it was a wordy mess. A large portion of the book was the internal dialogue of the characters explaining unnecessary things. The story lacked a likeable character, clear direction and a strong ending. I won’t spoil the ending just in case you read it but I was insanely annoyed after I finished it. I sincerely had a hard time finishing this story due to the length (way too long) but also for the plot and the unoriginal/bland characters.
