I received an electronic ARC from Clarion Books through NetGalley.
Sydney and Taylor return for further adventures. Taylor wants to expand their friend circle while Sydney is content to simply stay home. Sydney agrees to help Taylor and encourages him to be brave and reach out to meet people. Readers will appreciate the humor and glitches as Taylor follows Sydney's advice. Though friendship does not seem to be happening, readers see how other events can change situations and let people spend more time together.
Sweet characters who balance each other and are relatable. Love the glimpse of Miss Nancy at the end.
Such a sweet story of friendship and looking out for others. This was my first read of the series but I will read them all and share with my Pre-K class.
A cute little book about making friends featuring animal characters. perfect for those who are shy about meeting new people
My 8-year-old son in 3rd grade absolutely loves this new series so I jumped at the chance to preview a copy of the latest book about Sydney and Taylor.
Simply put, the illustrations are magical and the characters are brought to life via the beautiful colors and enchanting dialogue. Who wouldn't want to become friends with a darling hedgehog and skunk?
The theme of friendship is perfect for a young reader and each chapter takes you on a journey of learning and exploring. We even learn a few smart tips on how to find friends and ways we can start conversations.
I highly recommend checking this one out for the young ones in your world. It brought me joy!
Special thanks to Clarion for an advanced copy of the ebook via the NetGalley app.
So I have to admit that I am not familiar with this adorable duo. But we were big fans of piggy and elephant and toad and frog so I thought we would give this a go! As two friends, one is an introvert and one an extrovert. Just the description of the pair provided good talking points for my son as he encounters new friends at school —after all, someone who is your complete opposite can end up being your best friend!
However, I feel like the odd man out with this review. I realize it’s supposed to be a fun children’s story, but in reading with my son, it was difficult to discuss that in life, some people will use you. Nobody wanted to be friends with Taylor, despite his loving efforts and gift. In fact they were pretty rude with their rejections. But wouldn’t you know it, when the big rain comes, now everybody wishes they were friends with him so they could come into the dry, warm home… hmmm —that didn’t sit right with me. I told my son that I didn’t feel comfortable with him ever letting others walk all over him because you have something they don’t.
I realize this was not the author’s intent and the series is clearly popular!! It just wasn’t for our family. Thank you for the chance to read and revire!
A brilliant short chapter book following the adventures of Sydney and Taylor (a skunk and hedgehog) who live together in a burrow beneath Miss Nacy’s potting shed.
Taylor has had another big idea - he wants to make friends. Initially reluctant Sydney agrees and they set off to apply the techniques they have learnt from book. But will the be successful in their mission?
Short sections of text on the page and surrounded by full page illustrations that are bold and support the story beautifully. This book is an ideal first chapter book for children age 7+ and would make a lovely read aloud book to share.
A great beginning chapter book that bridges the gap for students who enjoy looking at pictures but need more challenging text structures. Young readers will have plenty of opportunity to apply context clue skills to identify the meaning of new words, among other grade appropriate comprehension strategies while enjoying a story about making friends who show up when you least expect it.
If you haven't already met Sydney and Taylor, then you are missing out. These two wonderful friends have already explored the whole wide world (or at least quite a bit for such small creatures), and they have taken a flying leap (Taylor did, anyway). Now Taylor, who is rather intrepid for a hedgehog, has decided that the two of them should go out and make friends. When Sydney points out that they are already friends with each other, Taylor does not let that slow him down.
Taylor definitely gets Big Ideas (like wanting to be the world's first flying hedgehog), but Sydney is content with the way things are. He also feels that other animals probably don't like them because "You're prickly and I stink!" as he explains to Taylor. But since he is such a good friend, he is willing to leave their burrow and help Taylor make new friends.
This might be a good story to use at the beginning of a school year or after a move to a new neighborhood. The dynamic duo have read books and know that to make friends you can use several strategies - which would also work well for young readers to try. Making pleasant conversation and paying sincere compliments are two of the methods Sydney and Taylor try out.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating: this series is perfect for kiddos who enjoy friendship stories like Frog and Toad or Elephant and Piggie, as well as readers making the transition from picture books to early chapter books.
Sydney & Taylor are a contemporary Frog & Toad, a whole new generation (probably several!) of readers will fall in love!
Thank you for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was my first exposure to these characters and this series. It is adorable, with beautiful pictures and wholesome themes. Sydney and Taylor are opposites attract kinds of friends (think Frog and Toad) and Taylor the hedgehog wants to branch out of their burrow and make new friends. Sydney the skunk needs a push out of his comfort zone in order to go on this adventure. It's not an easy road for these sweet creatures, but they find friends in the end.
This series is just a bit high for first graders, but they would be great for class read alouds and discussions about the themes and vocabulary words. Super cute!
This was a cute story about making friends and how it can feel like a daunting task. We find out it is worth the step out of your comfort zone. The illustrations are fun and colorful.
Sydney and Taylor and the Great Friend Expedition is the next installment of the Sydney and Taylor series, which follows a skunk and hedgehog on adventures. In this book, Taylor the hedgehog wants to make friends. Sydney, the skunk, is content to stay where he is because he doesn't like change. But he sees how important it is to Taylor so they go forward in their quest to make new friends. I read this with my 9 and 6 year old daughters and we all loved it. The illustrations keep the story engaging and fun. Highly recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.
Sweet early elementary chapter book with charming illustrations. Enjoyed by the little people I shared it with.
This would be a great book for young readers, as they are also at an age where they are learning some social skills in developing new friends.
Thank you to NetGalley, Jacqueline Davies the author, Deborah Hocking illustrator and the publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books for Young Readers for the opportunity to read the ARC/Advance Read Copy of Sydney and Taylor and the Great Friend Expedition. Publication date is Feb 2022.
I do have a suggestion for the author/publisher, but I will be making that to them separately; but it wouldn’t stop me from purchasing this book for my young (3&5 year old) niece/nephew..
My 4 year old loved this when I read it to him but think it's probably better aimed at 7+
It's a really cute read and Sydney and Taylor had us laughing aloud. I'll definitely be buying for our bookshelf!
Another wonderful Sydney and Taylor adventure! This story is a great reminder that it's not always easy to make friends, no friends are perfect. and, even when you don't see each other often, the best of friends will be there for you when you need them. This series is the perfect level for my students who struggle with reading but long to read chapter books. Wonderfully bright illustrations on each page and short chapters help readers understand whatś happening in the story.
This is a gorgeous early chapter book full of vibrant illustrations that young children will love.
Sydney and Taylor are best friends but Taylor decides they should try to make some more. What follows is a brilliant adventure where they try their best to find friends by giving 'sincere compliments' and 'pleasant conversations ' Unfortunately it is harder than they thought and nothing quite goes to plan.
The two characters in this story are adorable and the book has a lovely underlying message about the importance of friendship. This is the perfect book for new readers.
Sydney and Taylor are adorable characters! This is the first time I'm reading these characters, and I think I'll be reading all of their stories. I love the illustrations and the colour palette. The story was fun, and the message was loud and clear. Wonderful!
Taylor and Sydney are very good friends who live in a burrow beneath Miss Nancy's garden shed.
Sydney likes to stay at home, and Taylor wants to make more friends. They decide on a definition of friendship (maybe not what you or I would think), and start their adventure.
This is a charming tale; one you can read over and over, and even use different voices if you like to. I enjoyed it very much, and recommend it as a gift or an addition to anyone's library.
It's a fun, simple, and fanciful chapter story with some long words, but easily understood by most youngsters with a word or two of explanation. I always loved expanding my vocabulary while reading,so I hope parents won't discourage it!
5/5 Stars
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the free preview of this ebook!
