Wow what an amazing debut book . Fantastic story and characters . I hope this is a start of a series about these two detectives. It did leave it open to be brought up again in the future. This book was extremely tense and well written and II was pleased really with the end , justice was served. This could be my new book series addiction. 5 star for this one
Thank you to Canelo Digital Publishing and NetGalley for an opportunity to read an ARC of Last Place You Look, the first novel in a new British procedural series, scheduled for release on 04/08.
In their first case together, DS Robin Butler and his new partner, DC Freya West, are tasked with what seems to be an open and shut case: auto-erotic asphyxiation gone wrong. Upon closer examination, both begin to suspect foul play is afoot and start to investigate the players involved. A well-paced, intriguing novel, it kept me hooked until the rather neat ending.
So last week a D.I. with no probz, this week a D.I. and his side kick with problems, hang up’s, demons and everything else....and then more
A grimly realistic murder story involving back stories of the investigating officers ( as above ) and how they try to solve the murder without causing any more mess than they already have ( they do however continue to do so throughout )
All the characters were never gonna be a readers best friend😵, that’s not the intention of the book but honestly some of them tested my limits at anything approaching even mildly liking them!, some of their personalities are as dark as the story
As for the story, well it’s not bad, if it wasn’t Easter and so just reading half an hour here and there and reading like a normal week I would be picking a lot more holes in the story, as it is I wont!
There is a lot of sex talk in the story, not particularly raucous but the whole story is built around it
Mind saying all that I wanted to find out ‘whodunit’ and why and am glad did

Loved this book. Love the two detectives and can't wait to read more about them in future books.
Everyone has a secret and there are plenty of those in this story.
It starts with the death of one man and the plot thickens then to unravel the characters and how they intertwine with each other.

Jonathan Miller and his wife are invited to his best friend's lavish fortieth birthday celebrations. Four days later, Johnathan is dead, apparently aspyxiated during a solitary sex act gone wrong. DS Robin Butler is accompanied by his new partner. DC Freya West have to give a death notice to the widow. He can't understand why West is acting like a rookie. He doesn't know that the victim was West's lover.
There was a hint of intrigue to this story, more than enough to keep you reading. Everyone had a secret to keep. it's an easy book to follow and i was figuring out the why and where's at the same time as the Detectives. There were a few surprises along the way. The pace is steady and we get some background of the two Dectives. This is quite a good debut police procedural. I will be looking out for the next book from the author.
I would like to thank #NetGalley, #Canelo and the author #LouisaScarr for my ARC of #LastPlaceYouLook in exchange for an honest review.
Serial killers are not really my thing however, I did enjoy this story with the twists and turns leading to an unexpected result.
Sorry sent the review for the wrong story. please ignore
A rather unique story line involving two police officers, one a senior officer the other a new DC. The senior officer is keeping a secret from his past which affects his well being and the DC has a romantic connection to the victim in their latest investigation. A very intriguing end to the story, leading to what appears to be a justification result.
This was a pretty good book. While I struggled to get into it, I ended up really enjoying it. I like police procedurals and thriller mysteries, this book had some of both. Some of the twists I saw coming but others seemed to come out of nowhere, so that’s always a plus!
Partly a good detective murder mystery and partly a couple of police with more than usually complex backgrounds and that's saying something these days. DC Freya West was the lover of the dead man - he was found hanging on the back of a door a result of a lone sex game gone wrong; apparently misadventure but Freya is convinced otherwise. The widow does not seem overly devastated. Moving on, the various interrogations lead to anonymous suggestions of another misadventure, this time involving DS Butler, Freya's senior partner. Someone is stirring the mix and Freya is tasked with investigating this cold case. The first case ends straightforwardly as one of domestic abuse the second not quite so straightforward and we are left with two detectives, each with a dark secret, moving forward to the next crime. Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Last Place You Look swept me off my feet. What I enjoyed most in this novel besides the characters of DS Butler and DC West was the pacing. At the heart of the novel sits a murder and it is a murder of passion which lately hasn't been many publishers go to when it comes to police procedural's. I was very skeptical about the ability of a whole novel to be written surrounded only one murder and not make it feel like a who-dunnit novel or a cosy mystery. I was wrong. Scarr manages briliantly to intertwine the multiple POVs in this book to make it seem as gripping and accelerating as a serial killer police procedural thriller. Brilliant execution that left me crave more and more. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Wow! This book had more twists and turns than I saw coming. This was an engrossing tale of two British police solving a murder. There are several intertwining stories throughout. I haven’t read a book in a long time that I couldn’t put down. Fortunately I am in a position to read all day and I did, until I was finished. I am looking forward to reading more Butler & West novels.
An absolutely terrific read. I loved this. Really well written characters and fast paced. A brilliant thriller xx
Two detectives get called in to work a murder case. a dead man found in a hotel room with no foul play expected. The only problem is that one detective is having an affair with the dead man and knows this death is suspicious. Who killed this man and why? Will the detectives get all the answers they need?
3.5/5 stars for me
This book is slow to start but definitely picks up going into Part Two. The story in itself is suspenseful so that helps the story line. I feel there was almost too much going on with the backstory of the two detectives, the past of the male detective was almost unnecessary. Although it provided pieces to the storyline, it could easily be taken out as a space saver. I would recommend this book.
A detective story with complications on all sides. The victim was the secret lover of one of the detectives, the other has a past which adds further complications to the case. On the whole a fairly good read, interesting but there are times when the bounds of credibility is slightly stretched. I did like the main characters and their vunerability made them seem human. There are are a couple of twists in the story which I have my doubts about.
Not a great deal is written about the crime procedure. Some of the evidence seems shaky and there are a few different crimes under investigation which confused the issue.
All in all, not a bad read

I would like to thank Netgalley and Canelo for an advance copy of Last Place You Look, the first novel to feature DS Robin Butler and DC Freya West.
Jonathan Miller is found dead in a hotel room in the town where he lives. The newly formed team of Butler and West go to notify Amy Miller, Jonathan’s wife of his death and West annoys Butler with her unprofessionalism. What he doesn’t know is that she had been having an affair with the dead man and is sure his death wasn’t an accident, so, to investigate, she has to keep her secret. He, meanwhile, has secrets of his own.
Last Place You Look didn’t hold my attention and I struggled to get through it. To be fair, I thought it would be a police procedural but it’s more of a psychological thriller and that’s not really my thing as I find much of the behaviour in them unbelievable and difficult to swallow. This novel doesn’t do much to change my mind on that score and that’s a shame as buried beneath the dodgy behaviour there’s a good mystery.
The novel is told mainly from three points of view, Butler, West and the widow Amy Miller. None of them appear to be thinking straight so it’s difficult to feel any affinity towards them or identification with them.
About half way through West diverts from the Miller enquiry into an unrelated cold case file. The why of that is open to question but it’s probably the best part of the novel, solid police work and a bit of a mystery, but not for long as she soon reverts back to the main investigation and that doesn’t pass the reality test, too many implausibilities and unlikelihoods.
I’m sure that plenty of readers will enjoy the twists and turns and the personal drama in this novel as it is well done, but I prefer a good investigation and that rather gets left along the wayside in preference to secrets and lies. Last Place You Look is not for me.
A solid four star read. Well written. Fantastic characters. Fast paced. Gripping. Plenty of suspense to keep me enthralled. Would definitely read her next novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it
I am a HUGE fan of police procedural books and Last Place you Look is right up my alley!
Louise Scarr writes very believable characters that you want to root for, and the story she creates is full of thrilling turns and captivating moments.
DS Robin Butler and partner DC Freya West are brought in to look into a death in a hotel room where it appears a sex game has gone wrong. Upon closer examination DS Butler suspects foul play starts to investigate into the circumstances of this death. However, it turns out the deceased has been having affair with DC West, a fact she keeps hidden. The wife, Amy doesn’t appear the normal grieving widow, there was more to this marriage then appearances perceive.
DC West is not the only partner to have hidden secrets. As information over the culprit causing DS Butlers sisters death comes to light.
What a debut for Louisa Scarr!! A great police procedural, with flawed characters that are well developed. A well paced a gripping read.
I loved this book, let’s hope it’s the first in a very long series
When a DC is assigned to a grump sergeant her first job is to meet him at the home of a wife who is just about to be told her husband has been found dead in a hotel room, the victim of a solo auto-asphyxiation act that went wrong.
The DC realises that the man is the man she has been having an affair with, a kind gentle man that is no way into anything kinky. Her first mistake is to lie to her sergeant about how she knows the man, just a friend she says
She manages to convince her boss the death is suspicious. The problem is the main suspect becomes the missing girlfriend
Loved it.
I think what's most interesting about this story is that it's in the third person, so we get a glimpse into everyone's lives that are involved with the story. Everyone in the story has a secret to keep, and that makes the case more interesting and potentially more difficult to solve. While I figured out some of the broad strokes about 40% in, what I like about this is that the reader figures out the details alongside/the same time as the detectives, but there are still some surprises. I am an American, so I will say I had to look up a few terms, but that was no big deal at all.
