A brilliantly written book that I thoroughly enjoyed. A new meaning to the mother in law from hell. A page turner that I recommend.

Review: The Unwelcome Guest by Amanda Robson

Amanda Robson’s The Unwelcome Guest offers a roller-coaster of suspense and drama that keeps readers on edge. The novel revolves around Saffron, her husband Miles, and Miles' notoriously difficult mother, Caprice. As Caprice moves into their home with the intent of sabotaging Saffron’s marriage, the tension escalates, creating a high-stakes thriller filled with unexpected twists.

Plot and Pacing: The book is undeniably fast-paced, with a plot that twists and turns in surprising ways. Robson excels in crafting an unpredictable narrative that frequently defies expectations. This aspect of the book was particularly engaging, drawing readers into a whirlwind of drama and suspense.

Characters: The characters are vividly drawn, though not always in a favorable light. Caprice, the mother-in-law from hell, is depicted with a blend of cunning and cruelty that drives much of the plot. While some readers found her actions shockingly entertaining, others felt her character was over-the-top and unrealistic. Saffron, in contrast, is portrayed as a sympathetic figure, though some found her responses to Caprice’s machinations lacking in assertiveness. The supporting characters, including the new nanny and Miles’ brother, add additional layers to the story, contributing to its complexity.

Writing Style: Robson employs a shifting point of view that offers insight into various characters’ thoughts and motivations. This narrative technique has been praised for adding depth to the story, though it may also be polarizing for some readers. While some appreciated the multiple perspectives for their contribution to suspense, others found the style confusing or intrusive.

Overall: The Unwelcome Guest is a thrilling read with a strong sense of drama and tension. It provides a gripping look at family dynamics and the lengths to which some will go to protect their own interests. Despite its occasional lapses into predictability and its polarizing character portrayals, the book’s fast pace and surprising twists make it a compelling read for fans of psychological thrillers.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

O my goodness, Caprice was really the mother in law from hell! She does everything in her power to try and destroy her son's marriage, and at some stages I want to throttle her..... Book was very well written and I hope to read more by Ms Robson in future. Highly recommended.

Amanda Robson has done it again! This is a book told from multiple points of view. As usual, we are kept guessing right until the end with a host of characters that we root for and can't stand!! A delicious read. I can't wait for her next one.

This is an average thriller. I did like the short chapters making this fast paced. I wasn’t a fan of the writing style.
I didn’t like any of the characters. The premise became very predictable

I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ahhhh another family drama with a surprising ending, I loved it!
Saffron and Miles are a happily married couple and his mother just so happens to live with them as well.
Caprice does not like Saffron, and wished her don never married her. Caprice is mean and almost evil to poor Saffron. 👿
Enter the Nanny, Hayley.
Hmmm, I don’t have a good feeling here. 🤔
Twists and turns abound but who will end up victorious in this tale of the mother in law from hell? 🔥

I thought this was a bit hard work at the beginning and almost gave up with it but I’m so pleased I carried on reading. It turned out a great book with a few twists and turns to keep the suspense going . I would definitely recommend this to my audience. Five stars from me . Can’t wait to read more from this author

The Unwelcome Guest digs into what it is like to live with your mother-in-law from hell. The wife is pushed to her limits. The mother-in-law is constantly interfering in the relationship and seems to wants to break them up.

This was a fast paced and easy read. I enjoy when chapters are not too long and can get through it quickly but gives enough of character development to stay fully engaged.

Thank goodness I don’t have a mother in law like Caprice! However I did enjoy the way that the story unfolded. had a job to put it down, but at the same time I didn’t want to read it too quickly if that makes sense.

This was everything that I look for in a good domestic thriller-a scary mother in law, secrets and a nanny thrown into the mix what could go more wrong?

The storyline was enticing and I found myself not wanting to put the book down to find out what happens next, and if things will be ok for Saffron. At what lengths will she go to, to protect her family from her mother in law?

Run don't walk for your copy.

A big thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!

The Unwelcome Guest was my first Amanda Robson novel, and it definitely won't be my last! I liked that the story was told from several different perspectives, and all the characters were interesting to read about. Caprice was the mother-in-law from Hell and made me very glad that I'm single. This book kept me guessing, and I thought the ending was great. Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for giving me the opportunity to read and review The Unwelcome Guest...I'm looking forward to reading everything else Amanda Robson has written. : )

Brilliant read. The plot and characters were really impressive and loved the twist at the end. The main character's relationship with her mother in law was truly devious and entertaining

I requested this book because of the author. I have read Robsons’ other novels and enjoyed them. However, the plot with the evil mother-in-law moving into the home has been so overdone lately that I just did not enjoy this at all. All this book did was make me angry. If you have not read a book with this particular plot before, go for it, but if you have like me,I wouldn’t recommend it

Wow did this book ever give the line “mother-in-law from hell” new meaning. For those of you who love family drama, you might like this one, but the drama was honestly just too much for me. I couldn’t make sense as to why Caprice hated her daughter-in-law to this extent. I also cringed at the old thinking expressed by Caprice and her constant air of superiority. This book is relatively fast paced, some POV chapters are SO short, it honestly was easy to miss and sometimes seemed to be only a sentence or two, which broke the flow. The audiobook, I must say, did have excellent narrators. All in all, an OK read, especially if you like the drama but from a thriller aspect, I wasn’t super invested or drawn into the story. I also feel like the brother and all his shenanigans were just unnecessary to the plot and created even more drama for the sake of it.

CW: death, child abuse, physical assault, gaslighting.

A big thanks to Avon and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
