Definitely intrigued after reading this sample. The writing was dark and eerie and the premise is right up my alley. Will absolutely purchase a copy!!
This was such a new and interesting idea and I love how the story unfolded. This was dark and strong and so much fun to read. I can't wait for more from this series.
All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman definitely belongs to the category of books "to devour". I would say that the description stating that it's Hinger Games with magic is on point.
There are seven cursed families in the city of Ilvernath. Every one of them is a bit different, one is feared, one is kind of the city's black sheep, etc, yet they are brought together every twenty years in a tournament where seven champions battle to death to get control over very powerful high magick.
The story is told in 3rd person through 4 of these champions. And I would like to say that even though I have favorites (hello, Alistair!) I cared for every one of them. They have strong personalities and well-thought backstories and motivations. Plus, they all go through great character development as they are confronted with what it means to have blood on your hands. Overall, the family histories and pre-existing relationships were interesting as hell.
Now to the individual narrators. Like I said, one of them is Alistair Lowe. He's now one of my morally gray fictional boyfriends. His chapter captivated me, more and more I read. He considers himself to be a monster. He was born and bred by his ruthless family to continue the Lowe legacy of winning the Blood Veil tournament, and my heart just broke a little for him. This disaster child deserves a big hug. I can't stop thinking about him since I´ve finished the book.
And there’s Isabel Macaslan, the media's darling. She's a talented spellmaker, coming from a family reviled for the way they acquire the raw magic. I loved her.
Gavin Grieve. Oh, boy. He's the black sheep of the tournament because his family has never won it. Usually, the Grieve's champion dies first, even within a few hours into the tournament. Gavin is determined to do everything in his power to change that. Overall, this book really shows how far are people able to go, what they are willing to sacrifice, in order to survive and obtain power. I loved that aspect of the story.
And finally, Briony Thorburn who always dreamed about going through the tournament and winning it for her family. This girl convinced that there is a way out of this dreadful situation aches to be a hero. Nevertheless, she makes some questionable decisions too.
I think that All of Us Villains has it all. There’s a really unique magic system (Please, can I do cool named spells like that?) and great world building, well-rounded characters which you just want to hug and hold tight, a town with gruesome history, ruthless and wicked families, friendships, betrayals and shifting alliances, a lot of action to keep you on the edge of your reading spot, enough twists and turns, star crossed lovers mixed with enemies-to-lovers, and writing that will force you to keep turning the pages throughout all night... right into the early morning hours.
I love the plot, the setting, the magic, the characters, the relationships, that ending, all of it. I was not able to put it down, and I cannot wait to read the sequel!
In conclusion, get ready for what's coming your way when "The Blood Moon rises. The Blood Veil falls. The Tournament begins."
So far this book is seeming to be a 5 star. I'm loving the character so much, they each have their own interesting aspect to them, not only to the individual characters themselves but also the dynamic of the various families. The magick seems very interesting and I'm excited to see more of it. based on the writing of the book you would not think it was written by 2 different authors it's so seamless.
This book was great, it has all the elements- dark, competition, multiple POVS, complex characters, etc. definitely worth the read.
3.5/5 stars
I enjoyed the start to this dark, magical YA story with even darker players. The story centers around a magical competition to the death between champions of the seven most powerful magical families in Ilvernath all competing for control of the town's magic. The point of view shifts a few times between champions and villains, however I found it hard to like most of the characters. I think I'll have to read a bit more to see if I care if any survive the competition or give the audiobook a try. Overall, a good start to this story with an interesting, dark concept.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of this book.
This is one of the top reads of the year I absolutely loved it from start to finish and I’ve been recommending it to people ever since.
This was a sample of the book. It set up an interesting premise of magic being held within seven families, each of them having to compete every 20 years for who will control said magic. I like the dark vibe of the book so far, and I definitely want to read more.
Thank you, NetGalley, for giving me a chance to read one of the most-anticipated books!
I've been following Amanda Foody on social media ever since her "Ace of Shades" came out several years ago. And so when the news broke about her new book written in collab with her talented co-writer and friend, I knew I cannot miss it.
AOUV is brutal and dark, shocking and creepy, but also honest, pure and deep. I saw myself in so many details and traits that I can definitely claim my connection to this story.
Also the cliffhanger... I hate it and admire it at the same time!
In the city of Ilvernath, the citizens believe that there is no high magic. A book written tells how there is a Blood Veil Tournament between seven families. The book makes the public demanding to attend the tournament. Whoever wins this cursed tournament will received the high magic exclusively for twenty years. It is the most powerful resource in their world. The seven “champions” now have new information and new means to win. Will they accept their fate or rewrite their story?
The story is intriguing as you learn that there is one who wants to break the “curse” and keep them alive instead of dying. With that person succeed? The author has written well drained characters and a mythology of this world. It reminds me of the “Hunger Games” which I liked. I enjoyed reading about the characters in this novel. The only thing I couldn’t believe is how it ends with a cliffhanger. I need to read the next book now! It’s the beginning of a great new series!
very interesting start- definitely has me hooked! i like the dark mysterious energy to the story and the characters are intriguing. can't wait to read more!
I was anticipating this release and I am disappointed by it. Yes, the synopsis does not compare it to The Hunger Games but someone, somewhere, pitched it as such or I’ve just been given this impression by other readers so I was expecting a lot.
The pacing was slow and with all the povs I only connected with/strongly cared about one character, Alistair. I really tried to connect with and care about what was happening to all the characters but I just didn’t for some reason. Also, you’ll see a lot of other reviews say it’s not “villainous” enough and I agree.

All I have to say about this book is YOU NEED TO READ IT ASAP. I think this book has easily become one of my favorites for 2021 and I can not wait for book 2.
All of Us Villains is Hunger Games meets Game Of Thrones all mixed with some ancient magic. Over 800 years ago, high magic was starting to disappear. 7 well off families decided to put a curse with the remaining high magic to decide who would get to rule over the rest of it, but the families would have to prove they deserved to have control over it. Every 20 years each family puts forward their champion who will fight to the death while being excluded from outside forces under a blood veil. The veil only lifts when 6 die and 1 champion remains. This year, everything is changing.
We follow four main characters who are named champions in their families. Some see this as an honor, some as a death sentence but they all have something in common - they want to win. Alistair, Isobel, Briony and Gavin have all given up something they hold close to their heart to be in this tournament and we watch their friendships evolve and dissolve with in the blood veil. Who will slaughter their friends, lovers and classmates first?
I am obsessed. I could not put this book down and stayed up until all hours of the night to finish it. The world that the authors have created is so dark and magical that I instantly fell in love with it. It is hard for you to pick out your favorite and pin who the actual villain is because you get to see the situation from each of their point of view, I have my favorites but the entire book you are hoping that none of them kill each other because you have bonded to each of the main 4. Reading about the bonds and betrayals that these teenagers are creating is addicting.
Overall, 5 stars. I can not wait for the second book!
Lush and dark, this little snippet has whet my appetite for what could potentially be one of the best fantasies of the year.
Who doesn't love an antihero or even a villainous character? So as soon as I learnt of this books existence I had to snap it up.
And although this isn't the whole book, I can tell from what I did get to read that in going to love these messy characters and the delightfully atmospheric world they live in.
You can bet that I've order a copy and it's on its way to me as I type this!
Since it wasn't the whole book, I can only give it 4 stars.
Thanks again NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge for yet again hooking me up with another fab book!
I really wanted to love this book. Pinned tbe Hunger Games, but more violent. It seemed to be more The Hunger Games with a messier romance plot. I truly adore dystopian books, if they are more plot driven. Not secondary to the romance. I may try to read this early 2022, and see if I possibly missed some points on the first read. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
I just finished reading a sneak peek of All Of Us Villains, and my first thought is that I have to read the rest of the book. It’s also my second thought, my third, and well, you get the idea.
I’m not craving the rest of the book because authors Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman finished the sample with a cliffhanger. I know what will be happening next. I just have to come to terms with what just happened.
All Of Us Villains offers a cross between Harry Potter and Hunger Games, introducing seven magickal families who hold a tournament each Blood Moon to determine who will control high magick for the next 20 years. Each family picks a young member of their family to compete. The goal is to be the last champion standing. If more than one is still alive once the Blood Moon leaves, then the winner is the person who has spilled the most of their opponents’ blood. Kill or be killed.
We meet the families and their champions. Each has their own personal strengths and morbid strategies for grooming their champion. There’s no cookie-cutter champion, but individuals with family pride and different plans for bringing power to their family. Each chapter focuses on a different family/champion and paints a vivid picture of how these children have been trained to murder the other six. Dirty secrets are exposed to show just how much each family will sacrifice to win. Those sacrifices are deep and ruthless.
The sneak peek shows the preparations have been completed for the tournament. Yes, one reason I want to read the rest is so that I can read about the tournament events and find out the ultimate winner. The authors introduced their characters so deftly that there’s not one sticking out as a readers’ favorite. I don’t know which one I want to win because of how well these characters have been fleshed out. Each chapter unlocked a reason to support a different champion, which is delightfully unnerving. I’m eager to see who wins and how all of the families handle the aftermath.
Fans of magick and deadly competitions will breeze through the book.
I devoured this book faster than just about any other book I have ever read. Fantastic story with so many great characters, yet it is still a very easy story to follow. I want this to be a series, I want an adaptation. I want so much more from these authors. Such a fun read and I really hope to get a second book soon!
I received a sample of the book to review. I loved that it had multiple pov. It grab my attention almost immediately. It gives off a Hunger games vibe. The main characters are chosen champions for their families. They are basically chosen to fight to death to control high magick. There is a curse that prevents any one to wield beside the reigning champions family. From what I read from the first couple chapters this book is going to be a good one. I definitely need to read the rest that is for sure. I am glad it was just released so I can continue the book. Definitely recommend checking this one out for sure.
This excerpt wasn't nearly long enough. I can't wait for the release of this book. My interest in totally piqued and look forward to seeing just how everything plays out with this storyline. In addition, the character descriptions were great. I can already tell that character development throughout the book will keep my attention as well.
Thank you to NetGalley for this early peak excerpt. I look forward to the upcoming book release.
I really enjoyed this sampler! I love the world and the magic. I love the characters we've seen so far. I'm super excited to read more of this once it releases on Tuesday!
