I read this book as an extended preview. I was so immersed in the characters and intriguing world-building I didn't want it to end. I am so excited to see where this book goes! Will be purchasing it for the library and recommending it to students.
I am not usually into the YA genre, but this sampler piqued my interest. I thought the characters were interesting and the author did a good job world-building. I will be on the lookout for when this book is published.
My expectations for this one were set so incredibly high, I'm not surprised it failed to reach them. When a book markets itself as a bloodier Hunger Games with morally grey characters, i expect greatness. This was definitely good, but it wasn't great.
I think my main problem with this definitely stems from the title. It declares every one of its characters a villain from the first page. So, when they weren't exactly villainous, I was disappointed. I didn't want alliance and romance, I wanted betrayal and hate. There were two characters with villainous tendencies, and they were definitely my favorites. The rest were just slightly darkened heroes.
I did love the ending of this though. I hadn't realized it wasn't a standalone, so I was definitely surprised by the lack of resolution. Now, I'm desperate to get my hands on the next book, as it seems the characters will finally be reaching a breaking point.
Although I didn't particularly love this one, I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book. This had so much potential, and even though I didn't love it, I can definitely see it making a splash in the YA world.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
All the teasers have been great, blessedly I've been approved for a full ARC so I will save my comments for the review.
The sampler of 'All of Us Villains' captured my attention and interest! A few chapters have already shown us some really intriguing characters. They are children who grew and studied the whole life to participate in the violent tournament. Well, that is something. I am curious in the novel's world and the nature of its magic. Waiting for the rest of the story!
In this sampler, you get a taste of what's to come in this dark fantasy novel. You are following multiple "villains" that will be taking part in a tournament to the death, all to gain immense power for their family/future generations. The Lowe family has notoriously won, and Alistair Lowe is expected to take the win once again. However, there are now others that are coming in to play to try to knock the Lowe family off their throne.
The magic system is extremely unique, and although this was a sampler, it is still very apparent throughout. The banter between characters such as Alistair and Isobel was so fun to read, and I'm excited to see where underdog Gavin goes throughout this novel. I would best describe this book as Hunger Games with dark magick, and I'm excited to read the full length novel once it's released.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review an advanced sample of All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman. I really enjoyed Ace of Shades by Foody and was just as impressed with this one.
The premise is very intriguing. We follow the champions of seven families as they prepare to compete in a ruthless tournament. The winner of said tournament will win control of the high magic supply in the city for their family, thus setting them above all of the others. In the past, the Lowe family has dominated this competition, but after the publication of a tell-all book about the before-secret trials, outside forces have stepped in to ensure their failure.
Magical competitions are something that I really enjoy in books, and this seems like a fresh take on the trope. I love that all of the characters that we've met so far seem to be morally gray. You don't know if they are good or bad as they all seem to be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure they come out on top for their family. I also love the dark atmosphere created by the writing. It sets a creepy, but perfect, backdrop for this competition.
All in all, this has the making of a great book and I am eagerly looking forward to reading the full book when it releases.
If this sampler is anything to go by, I dare say we have a very exciting novel to look forward to! I can't wait!
I really liked this book. The setting was imaginative and the characters were memorable. Thank you for the ARC, I will definitely recommend this book and this author to my peers.
This was a really phenomenal read and I'm excited to read the full book when it comes out. It was dark in a great way and the magic system was really amazing. I want to know more about it and the characters. I'm also excited for the paparazzi/exposure aspect of it. Like the hunger games but different. For a sampler, it was great. If the rest of the book is as good, this has the makings of being a top 2021 book.
loved this sampler book by various authors ... sometimes i get sick about what i want to read next, and this was a great way to help!
Once you move past the grandstanding of the villainry of the Lowes siblings and the basic expositional bits in the beginning few pages, All of Us Villains has such great potential. The characters are well fleshed out in their beginning pages, the chapters switching between their different POVs. The tournament between seven families will end with one victor, the lone survivor who will win the tournament for their family and so win control of the source of magic. It’s a huge deal to be chosen as a contestant and an even bigger deal to win. Whichever family wins will have control over much of magic for a generation, which is ample time to create great change in the world, if they are so inclined. Ever since there was a manifesto published, exposing the seven families and the curse that governs them, the government is interested in this contest, in who will control the magic. This adds an extra layer to the already complicated story, in the best way. So far, it’s not confusing and really just hyped me up to keep reading this story!
I love how the setting is described: a small village with spell shops and pubs, with each family having a foothold, a home or compound of their own depending on the size of the family. The magic system is also interesting: though each person can wield magic and even create spells of their own, they often rely on others to craft spells or curses, storing them in objects to be used for later. Spells for concentration or to cure a hangover, to zap away a zit, or to cause a hangover. All of these can be stored in an object like a ring or an amulet. It seems like a limiting magic system, relying on what you have on your person, rather than conjuring a spell on the spot. I want to know if you can even do that with this magic system and perhaps I will discover it when I read the entire book, rather than this lovely, long excerpt.
The tournament setup itself reminds me of the Hunger Games, as it would remind anyone who has ever heard of the series. Children fighting to the death? Easy association. But the tournament goes much beyond this basic comparison, for which I am thankful. It reminds me also of Alexandra Bracken’s Lore, and of Victoria Schwab’s Shades of Magic series, particularly the second novel in the original trilogy. I very much look forward to reading the continuation of All of Us Villains!
This little snippet has made me so excited for the full book. Amanda has a way with her characters. You get sucked in immediately and it's hard to put her books down!
Even by just reading the description of the book I knew I was gonna like it. But now that I've read this sample of it, I absolutely love it and I can't wait to get my hands on this book.
Really enjoyed this - loved the sample - such an exciting start! I can't wait to read the rest on release day!!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this sample.
This book, well the start of it, did nothing for me. I liked the idea of the curses. Not many books dabble in the morally grey section. I also love the idea of a competition to the death; they're my favorite kind. Unfortunately, I’m not a huge fan of multiple points of view. Especially more than three. It makes it hard for me to connect with any of the characters or their stories. So I never found myself looking forward to anything. Even now, finishing the sample, missing most of the story, I find myself not really caring.
Even though this was a sampler, I loved every minute of it! From the brief glimpse, I could tell that this is going to be a pulse-pounding book full of action, drama, and well-rounded characters that the reader just can't help but root for. I will definitely pick up a copy of this book on publication day and would recommend all young adult fans to do the same!
I can officially say that the sampler was not enough, I need more!I love being able to have a sampler to ensure that I will enjoy the book, but sometimes it is torture to not be able to continue
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read the advanced sampler for All of Us Villains!!!
I love the sample that I was able to read. I tried to apply for the entire book, but haven’t heard anything back yet, but I will buy it if I don’t get to read it in advance. If you love magic and villains this is the book for you. Seven families of magic wielders compete in a tournament with one coming out the winner. With four points of view (so far) I was enjoying the story from every person we had been introduced to so far.
I can’t wait to read the entire book once it becomes available!!
Really enjoyed the story so far and can’t wait until release day when I can continue. The characters are all very interesting and I love the world building
