**Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan-Tom Doherty Associates for making this sampler available for review purposes. This in no way changed my opinion**
I have read the first Ace of Shades book by Amanda Foody and really enjoyed it. So when I saw she had another series coming out and it was described as Hunger Games but with magic, I was sold. I wanted to read it immediately. The extended sampler is both great and also unfair, as it's so long that it gets you deep into each POV character's motives and desires and then leaves you wanting more. The sampler is 86 pages long (!!) which is about 1/4 of the finished book's page count. It introduces us to Alistair Lowe (the favorite to win), Isobel Macaslan (the media darling), Gavin Grieve (the assumed first to die), and Briony Thorburn (the goodie-two shoes). Each of these characters had a strong voice and clear motivation to be their families champion (whether they want to or not is another story). I really enjoyed getting to know them all.
Knowing how long the extended sampler is, I'm excited to read the finished product and also scared to see how this plays out because I'm sure it will end on a major cliffhanger that will leave me wanting even more of these characters. November can't come soon enough!
I have just read the sampler, but I am definitely decided on buying this book. I am a huge fan of hunger games and using it on the blurb was a great hit for me.
I can see that this book has a lot of violence and it is pretty bloody, but it makes 100% sense and it is not something that comes out as unexpected.
From the sampler we can see that there are some morally grey characters which I really enjoy. Alistair is without a doubt my favourite character.
Now I am really hyped to read the full book. I would recommend this book to all the hunger games fans that are looking for something way more dark and spicy.
I'm very torn on whether I will purchase this book upon publication. On one hand, the sampler was fantastic. The characters are believable and real. The setting is moody and atmospheric, the perfect setting for the time of year its being released in. Despite the multiple viewpoints (more than two are typically no-go for me), I found myself drawn to every character and didn't mind it switching between so many of them. I'm fascinated and want to know more... but Christine Lynn Herman is a proven bully. I didn't even realize she was the co-author until after I downloaded it so that is my bad. I read it and enjoyed it but not enough to be able to disconnect the work from (one of) its creators.
i can't wait to read the rest of this novel! i absolutely adored the writing and how atmospheric it was. the cast of characters were interesting and i loved how dark it got at the end.
Oh my God. What a cliffhanger! This sampler exceeded my expectations. This was already one of my most anticipated books of 2021 and now it’s even higher on the list. The characters felt real from page one and I can’t wait to see where the story goes once the book is released.
It was so easy to fall in love with this sampler; the writing style is rich and layered, and the story's atmosphere is deliciously dark and magical. Although connecting to characters can be difficult when there are so many POVs, Alistair already emerges as the most memorable character, though I'm sure the others will catch up once the reader is exposed to more of their chapters (and, of course, once the bloody competition truly begins). All of Us Villains was always on my radar as one of my most anticipated books this year, and this sampler has only confirmed my excitement to devour it in its entirety.
The premise actually sounds really good. However, I can't give a full review for a very small sample, sorry.
I received a free SAMPLE e-ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is like The Hunger Games, but with magic. And I loved it! I was honored to be able to read a sample of this book, which included the first 86 pages. This a quite a unique story, but still has all the elements to make this a wonderful and fascinating series! I’m excited to read the entire book!
This is a world that had a lot of magick; both common magick and high magick. Then one day there was almost none left. At that time seven families secretly decided to curse themselves and in turn share the remaining high magick of the world. Every generation the seven families would pick one of their members to compete to the death in a tournament. Whichever family wins has a claim to the magick until the next Blood Moon. It’s been twenty years since the last Blood Moon and with its return means it is time for another tournament. The story follows Alistair from the wealthy Lowe family; Isobel, from the magick scavenging Macaslan family; Gavin from the bitter Grieve family; and Briony from the self-absorbed Thorburn family.
The stakes appear to be heightened thanks to a publication by an anonymous author that has exposed the secret deal between the seven families. Everyone now knows what’s at stake with winning the tournament. Quite honestly, I’m routing for Gavin Grieve even though he’s the underdog. The Lowe family has a secret weapon, and the cliff hanger has me worried about the lengths they will go to in order to win.
I’m already awaiting for a movie adaptation.
Even though this book was a sampler I still thought it was really good! The story is nothing like I have ever read before which I really enjoyed. I will be recommending this book to all of my friends.
I honestly cannot wait to read the full book - I could not stop reading! Interesting characters with depth and contrast and a killer game that is guaranteed to destroy the reader just as much as the characters participating. I can only give it 4 stars as it was a sampler but I am predicting that the full book will be a 5 star read.
It's an intriguing premise, and it's clear to see that the worldbuilding is strong, the characters are well defined, and the stakes are suitably high. I very much like the idea of Spellmakers, and the notion that magic could be defined into levels, which gives it a quality very much of various magic systems in roleplaying games. That may put some people off, but to me, that's been something that's been with me for many years, so it makes perfect sense.
The sampler here is 96 pages long and it's been primarily worldbuilding, scene setting, and introducing characters. I have no problem with a steady set up, but I'd be interested to see where everything goes when the action actually begins.
I would sell my firstborn to get my hands on a full copy of this book! All of Us Villains had me on the edge of my seat, the premise is so interesting and I love the world the authors have managed to create. I loved all the little details that set this world apart from our own and I found myself searching for all the quirks the authors built into the text. Not only is the writing fantastic, the characters are dynamic and interesting, there wasn't a single POV a didn't love. This book is exactly the thing YA readers are loving right now: morally grey characters, dark witchy aesthetics, and a plot that keeps you guessing.
I can’t actually explain the immaculate vibes it gives me. It’s like a reversion of the hunger games with a little of schwab’s spice.
The plot is easy reading and in only 100 pages you get an idea of how amazing this narrative can be.
I’m truly waiting to read this when it’s published😌
🇦🇷
Ooh that twist!!! I've been so hyped for this ever since the title was announced and this preview was awesome! So many different perspectives, each with a distinct voice. The modern day world building with the paparazzi involvement is a cool addition and I can't wait to read the full thing.
OMG what a preview. I can't wait to read the whole book.
It's kinda like Hunger Games but more grown up and so much gorier. There's magic and multiple POVs.
It was so exciting and hooked me right from the start. Definitely adding to my TBR.
Thank you so so much to the Publishers and NetGalley for a Sampler in exchange for an honest review.
All of Us Villains follows seven families cursed to send adolescents into a death match every 20 years for control of a secret stash of the worlds most powerful magick. Our story begins as youths eligible to be their families champions wait on baited breath to be named their families champion. One major difference this year being that one of the families (the ones notorious for losing) publish a tell all book about the families and the tournament, making it now a public spector. Who will be chosen as champion? And who will have the villainy to win it all?
I adore everything Christine Lynn Herman has written(her Devouring Gray Duology being some of my favorite works of recent literature). I even have tattoos of two of the tarot cards from the duology because it sucked me in and gave me that sweet escapism we look for as readers. So when I saw the opportunity to get a sneak peek at her new collaboration I jumped for joy. I was not disappointed, save the fact that it was only a sampler. Lynn Herman has a great deal of knowledge writing from multiple perspectives and it really shines through in this novel. While introduced and revisiting different characters in each chapter she weaves in facts about families/characters we've already met to paint an even broade picture.
The magic system which we get to see in this glimpse is a work of art. Ingredients are combined into spells or curses, then stored in stones set in rings to be used at ones need. Each spell has a level value based on the casters who fashions it's abilities (as a Dungeons and Dragons player I thoroughly enjoyed this mechanic). I look forward to seeing how it all plays out when the tournament commences.
I cannot waut to sink my teeth into the remained of this book when I get the opportunity. It has remained my most anticipated read of the year and I look forward to seeing how it all plays out, as well as spreading the word that Christine has done it again, along with Amanda Foody.
This sample makes me really want to read the entire thing. This was one fabulous sample that I could not put down.
Wow, this sampler was amazing!! I devoured it and kept trying to turn the page even when I got to the end! In this sampler, a number of contestants prepare to participate in a deadly magical tournament. The prize means that their families will gain control of valuable high magic, which many would kill for. While there are a number of characters competing, the authors did a fabulous job making them all seem very distinct and intriguing. The world-building was very well done, although I still have plenty of questions. Parts of this sampler reminded me of The Lynburn Legacy and The Curseworkers series, which I loved! I’m looking forward to seeing more of the LGBTQ+ rep and how the deadly competition plays out. I will definitely be pre-ordering a copy of this book and wish November was coming sooner! I can’t wait to see what happens next! All of Us Villains releases November 9, 2021. Thank you to Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman, Tor Teen, and Netgalley for a sampler in exchange for honest feedback.
We follow the current generation of seven families that compete for the use of high magick. Only problem is someone with insider knowledge wrote a book about this competition, and now everyone knows that it's to the death.
I need more of this now! I was hooked from the first sentence- and excerpt from the book that was published. And I am enjoying how each family, especially the current generation, are reacting to their secret being known. This is sure to be a huge favorite of mine.
All of Us Villians (Sampler)
The introduction to All of Us Villians is very complete. The main characters are well written and the dialogue is easy to follow. The different points of view were not difficult to follow and the storyline progressed well. I love the plot and the mixture of magic is perfect so far! Very excited to read this and see where the characters take us, especially with where the sampler ended!
