I adored how engrossing even just these nine chapters were. The four point of view characters are all distinct, interesting, and I'm currently rooting for all of them (which probably means pain). The side characters are equally well developed and the world building is insanely brilliant. This completely lives up to its fairytale influences and I can't wait for the whole thing!!
Hunger Games, but with magick? I may not know true happiness until I have this book in my hands.
This sampler was such a great introduction to the characters and plot of All of Us Villains. The characters feel really well fleshed out and I’m so excited to get the rest of the story!
What a great introduction to this book! I love the characters already and the premise is very interesting. So excited to read the full book!
You had my at Hunger Games. I am sooooooooooo interested in reading the rest of this book. Its so unique and interesting.
Despite only having read the sampler, I can already tell this is going to be a wonderful book and possibly one of my favorites this year.
All of us Villains is a crossover between Harry Potter and Hunger Games that I never knew was possible or that I needed.
Families residing in the town of Ilvernath had been cursed and every 20 years each family sends out its champion in a battle to the death to win the remaining high magic in the world for their family. The past few battles have been won by the Lowe family but things are changing, contestants are determined and stronger than ever.
I absolutely adored this sampler, the book has a completely unique magic system and the different elements of the supernatural in even the smallest aspects were great. Multiple POVs that detail the characters' inner thoughts, struggles are always a plus point in my book.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this sampler and can’t wait to read the full book!
I was super into this... a cross between Harry Potter and the Hunger Games is something I never knew I needed. Already pre-ordered!
You Fell in Love with the Victors of the Hunger Games.
Now Prepare to Meet the Villains of the Blood Veil.
As champions for their families, the seven of them must compete in a tournament where only one will win. The main characters are all so interesting and well written, and the magic system in this book was incredibly interesting and unique.
This is definitely one of my most anticipated reads for the year, especially because I was hooked from the very first chapter. Such an intriguing concept for a book and fans of the Hunger Games will absolutely love it - I cant wait to delve into the characters and find out how they will interact with each other in the rest of the book!
I wanted this book for a while. It is one of my most anticipated reads for this year.
So I was excited when I got the sample ARC and now that I have finished reading the sample, I am really interested in reading the full book.
The story seems to be about seven kids being chosen to be champions of their respective families in a tournament.
We are introduced to all our main characters Alistair Lowes, Isobel Macaslan, Briony Thorburn and Gavin Grieve.
Review.
POSITIVES
THE MAIN CHARACTERS
Our main characters are one thing I loved the most. I was not bored or frustrated by any of them.
I liked how reluctant our MC’s are very to be in the tournament Most of them did it for their family name.
They all have their flaws and internal struggles and problems.
Alistairs problem was trying to live up to his callous family’s expectation.
Isobel was dealing with everyone deserting her when she was announced champion of her family
Briony wants to be a hero to help the town but she is not given the chance.
Gavin has to deal with everyone looking at his family like failures and trying to prove them wrong.
Their struggles seem so realistic. I felt I would act the same way of I was in their shoes.
They are all morally grey and that is what I am looking for.
The characters were written well and I doubt I will ever get bored of them.
THE SIDE CHARACTERS
Which are mostly the family members.
Some are annoying, some are complete monsters and some have already found a way into my heart.
Hendry, Innes and I enjoy reading about all of them even Alistair’s evil grandma.
MAGIC SYSTEM
I have read a lot of magic stories but this one seems different in a good way(Maybe because of the because I have not read much).
THE TITLE AND COVER
The title attracted me instantly and that summary.
You fell I love with the victors of the Hunger Games.
Meet the villains of the blood veil.
Pure perfection.
Whoever thought of that lines needs and award.
Then the intricacy of the cover. Blue and red, the colors go with each other.
NEGATIVES.
Unfortunately nothing can be perfect.
The Magic Was Confusing.
I know I am contradicting myself but get that I liked the concept. I am still confused about how it worked.
CONCLUSION.
I can see the makings of a good book.
If Hunger Games is as good as this, I might actually read it.
Thanks for reading and goodbye.
This was a delicious read, and I was hooked from the very first page. The concept is captivating, the characters are well fleshed out, and the writing is sublime; I found myself devouring every single page. The authors have truly outdone themselves, and I cannot wait for this to be published - I, for one, will be rushing to the book store to get it, and I know it's going to look so beautiful on my shelf!
I NEED THIS NOW.
Is this pretty much The Hunger Games 2.0? Yes. Is it well written? Yes. Are there too many perspectives? Yes.
Basically, give me the rest of the book pretty please, thank you.
This story is one of my most anticipated for the fall, and the sampler has done nothing but increase that anticipation!
The characters are quickly and deftly described. The early worldbuilding is phenomenal - the language and expectations of the world are set from the first page, with concepts like high and common magick explained by using a combination of common phrases - like Pinky Promise - and setting details, like the red moon and light that always accompanies the use of high magick. I already have characters to root for in a dangerous game that Foody and Herman have set such a wonderful stage for.
And with a cliffhanger like the one at the end of the sampler = I can't believe I have to wait until NOVEMBER to read the rest!
*SAMPLER REVIEW*
I usually don’t read samplers because when you are just getting into the book, it’s over. I will say I am definitely reading this book when it comes out.
We have seven families, part of a curse, where every generation each family has one champion to enter a tournament with a fight to the death. There is a very intriguing magic system. Four perspectives have been introduced and their stories set up. After a tell all book has exposed these families and the tournament, the champions are shown as more villain then hero.
Alistair Lowe: His family were the champions last generation. They currently own the high magick. They are the top dogs who have won more tournaments than they have lost. Will this year change their winning streak?
Isobel Macaslan: A family of scavenger of magick and spellmakers. Talented and determined to win but will being in the spotlight be more than she can handle?
Gavin Grieve: He has a lot to prove as being part of a family that has never won a tournament. How far will he go to prove he is more than the bottom of the barrel?
Briony Thorburn: Confident and ready to win this tournament. Part of a beloved and established family but will Briony be the champion of them all?
I’m super excited to see where the story goes. It is intriguing, cutthroat and someone is bound to get blood on their hands if they haven’t already. Let the villains rein!
*Received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
Wow!!! I absolutely loved the sampler of this story and I cannot wait for this enticing, gothic tale to be out in the world. I inhaled this story and this sampler left me begging for more! I am so excited for more of this story and I cannot wait to see how it ends. An amazing, villainous tale!!
Amanda Foody is one of my favorite underrated authors, and this sampler has me DYING to read the full book! The aesthetic established in this sampler is perfection, and I already know this will be a favorite of 2021.
This was only a sampler. But from what little of it, it was very good beginning. However, I can’t give a full review because I need to read the whole book to fill a well grounded opinion.
* Screaming to get the ARC of this book *
Thank you Netgalley, the authors and the team behind this book.
Shall we start with the review? I SAY YES.
From the cover (Don't deny it reminds me of Darkling) and the title you know this book will be your new bane (and I mean it, it took me almost no time at all to finish reading it).
What kind of characters are portrayed here? The answer is all kinds, but the greyness of them is the most appealing (I hate it when a character is so soft).
What about the magic of the book? Don't make me talk about it or I'll drop spoilers, but I can tell you it was special and wild.
Are there elements in this book used in other books? Yes, at times I felt like I was reading the hunger games, combined with vikings and game of thrones, very weird but strangely it works (I love brutal).
What about the characters? They all have their why's and you end up loving their story.
God, tell me the sequel won't be long in coming, because I can't wait for more.
Seven families fighting over the most powerful magic left in the world. Who wouldn’t want to read that? Amazing character introductions and world-building. I want to read this now!
My thanks to the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for allowing me to read and review a sampler of this book.
As this was a sampler it’s not possible to give a full review, but based on this preview I’m very very excited! It seems like it will be a twisty dark academia, with unsettling character interactions.
This book is unfortunately not for me. The plot sounds right up my alley, but after reading the snippet I don't have any interest in carrying on. I didn't feel invested in or motivated by any of the characters and don't find the plot super compelling.
I... absolutely loved this - and I need the rest immediately. I know without a doubt that this is going to be one of my favorite books of the year.
