Sandie Jones never fails to deliver an entertaining psychological suspense with a plethora of surprises and this is no exception. The way things appear at the beginning are no at all how they turn out to be in the end. This is fast-paced and an absolute pleasure to read.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* this was a pretty good read with a lot of stuff going on, really liked the twists in this, good version of the more common "wedding party to funeral" theme
Sandie Jones does it again with another domestic psychological thriller that keeps you guessing as it twists and turns all over the place!! What is the truth? Who is lying and who is not? From the very first page the action gets set in motion. We see that there has been an accident...someone is dead...so what exactly happens? Four best friends travel with Ali, the bride-to-be, to an exclusive spot in Portugal for her upcoming nuptials to Jack's brother Will. Jack's wife Rachel, and best friends Paige and Noah are also going on this trip. Each has a secret that could ruin another one's life. And one person knows the truth. How this story plays out and how suspicions grow and trust is put to the test takes the reader on a nail-biting journey where on one page you think you know the truth, and the next page makes you question that!! The ending is quick and surprising. Definitely worth the read for those intrigued by this genre. This book was fine. I enjoyed most of it, even if there was a lot of repetitiveness and unlikeable characters. I figured out the main twist pretty early, and the epilogue left me more confused about things than needed. Overall, it was entertaining and kept me reading.
I saw mixed reviews about this book and wanted to go in with an open mind. I found myself reallyyyy underwhelmed with this book. The storyline was very meh. Three couples go to Portugal to celebrate one of the couples getting married; however, Ali rubs the entire group the wrong way. Rachel discovers something about Ali and everything changes. It didn’t seem like a mystery or thriller to me then right near the end you get the BAM. That was surprising to me but the rest felt very eh.
Another fine twisty book from Ms. Jones! This one has a bit slower of a lead up, probably because of the extra characters involved and the need to really set the stage. A few times I shook my head and told the characters to just get on with it already. But honestly, if this had actually taken place, it probably would have all dragged on longer. I loved the character development, even if this is why the story dragged a bit. Rachel got to be a bit too much for me at one point. Her constant fretting was making me anxious! I was startled at one point in the turn of events; though I will say that there was a bit of a warning beforehand so it feeling like it came out of the blue was more on me than the writing. Like Ms. Jones' previous books, this one reminds you how little you can really know someone and not to live on assumptions alone.
Well I’m giving this one a 3* just because a 2* would mean I should have stopped reading it half way through!!!!
This is one of those books that I kept hoping would get better and the ending was surprising, however it wasn’t enough to save this book from the “wouldn’t recommend” pile.
As you know from the blurb, three couples are going to Portugal to attend the wedding of two of this group, Ali and Will. Paige and Noah are married, as are Jack and Rachel, but things aren't always the way we think in a marriage, are they? Will is Jack’s younger brother and crazy in love with Ali.
The book promised “a gripping domestic suspense” but I found nothing special or new in this novel. The only suspense I really felt was when the men were out surfing and things didn't go as planned!
Most of the first half of the book is filled with Rachel’s inner thoughts and suspicions, her dialogue with the others and basically how unhappy these couples are in their marriage. It was tedious.
The marriage took place at a very picturesque spot. I did enjoy the descriptions of the cliff side restaurant and venue and the crashing of the waves off the ocean.
The characters were not relatable and mostly unlikable.
I have to add that I always expect that a novel should be well written. The author had a propensity for writing things such as “Erm...erm yes, yes they did” and “Er, no, I was intending to” , his constant use of these terms drove me batty.
There are other high reviews out there so I’m probably in the minority. If you have this one, go in blind and see what you think!!
3 couples travel to Portugal for a destination wedding. In the course of a weekend, secrets are revealed which tear the friends and couples apart.
I had the most anxiety while reading this book. I didn’t know who to trust, everyone was unreliable AF, and to top it off people who were supposed to be friends and love each other definitely did not have their best interests in mind. What a cast of disasters.
But, I think that was the point. Everyone is guilty of something, of doing something unsavory or hurting someone else. It’s the reader’s job to figure out who is the most guilty and why. Which I did not figure out, probably because I was so anxious that these people didn’t just have simple conversations and avoid all the unnecessary drama. But then the book wouldn’t be as good right?
I feel books that invoke too much anxiety in me are unenjoyable, so that’s where this one falls. However, I was up to all hours of the night reading and trying to figure out what was going on, so that makes me think I liked it
The Guilt Trip is filled with domestic suspense, drama, and twist. The audio book Verizon was a pleasant listen. I would say there isn't many thriller type moments in this one, it mostly depends on twist and the main character's assumptions based on what she is seeing of the more dramatic moments. If you're a fan of relationship based dramas with a touch of suspense and thriller elements, this one is definitely for you.
I so wanted to like this book but it was hard to follow and keep up with who was who which just made it so much harder to read. With that being said it was just boring and tedious book to read.
This story had me hating all the wrong people. Even after each twist was revealed, it made sense and followed with the flow of the story. I felt angry towards characters and sad for others. The location was not only beautiful, but became a character itself. It took me 1 day to read this book and I was submerged from page 1.
I was looking forward to reading this book after I read all the great reviews. 3 couples go away to Portugal to celebrate one of their weddings. Of course, thing don't go as expected.
Sadly, I was disappointed……it did not take long to remind me of a tedious soap opera. The interactions of the couples, the snide remarks just irritated me. In fact, all of the couples irritated me.
Perhaps I have chosen to read this book at the wrong time. I definitely do not feel the same as other reviewers. But, I kept slogging along until I was almost finished.
Then, a bit of redemption at the end. I hung in long enough.
I've always said that not every book is not for everybody. I know many would enjoy this as
a beach read that is full of drama. I am just not that person.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance readers copy.
This book was fine. I figured out the twist about 1/2 way through. I didn’t see the twist at the end but figured it out pretty quick after the incident. Would I recommend it? Depends on if you’ve read a lot of thrillers or not.
Thank you to the Publisher & Netgalley for the advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
This twisty book will have you on your toes. Three couples go away for a destination wedding with A LOT of secrets. It can be a little hard to keep all the sub stories straight so it is definitely not a light read. It is a very thrilling read.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for providing me either an eARC and Macmillan Audio for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review. This book is out now!
CW: fatphobic language, fat-shaming, mention of miscarriage, car accident
This was the first book by Sandie Jones. I went into this one with somewhat high expectations based on the fact a previous novel of hers was picked as a Reese’s Bookclub pick.
I don’t have much to say about this one. I was pretty bored for about 85% of this book. I didn’t care much for the characters, but not in an I-want-to-keep-reading-because-I-hate-the-characters kind of way if that makes sense.
I switched between an ebook and an audiobook with this one. I did enjoy the narrator but I still wasn’t vibing with the book. I don’t know. I didn’t really care much for this one, but this might be the book for you!
In The Guilt Trip, three British couples go to a destination wedding in Portugal where secrets are revealed, and marriages are tested.
Will and drama queen Ali are getting married. Will’s brother, Jack, is best man and attends with his wife, Rachel. Rachel and Jack’s friends, Paige and Noah, also attend. Rachel doesn’t understand her husband’s dislike of Ali now that they are no longer co-workers. So, when Ali is revealed as a cheater, Rachel can’t help but wondering if Jack was, or is still, her lover.
First of all, this book is more like women’s fiction than a thriller. And not in a happy rom-com way. Most, if not all, of the characters have made some pretty horrible decisions.
If you read thrillers or domestic suspense very often, the plot twists are obvious. I agree with other reviewers that this is more of a soap opera than a mystery. For these reasons, The Guilt Trip only gets 3 stars from me.
Thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Well. This was a difficult one to review. Because it definitely kept me interested and I read it in one sitting, but I could not stand any of the characters and while I was curious about who was the biggest liar, I did not really care what happened to them. The plot was also driven by a lot of miscommunciation/characters in relationships refusing to talk to one another which drives me nuts.
I really enjoyed her other two novels that I have read but this one was a miss for me
This book blew me away! I'm a huge fan of books that take place somewhere other than where the main character lives. The whole location of this book sounded like a dream, the plot... not so much.
I really enjoyed most of the characters even though they were completely unreliable. Every character seemed to be hiding a giant secret that could ruin theirs and others' lives! That just made this book so much more juicy.
I had a hard time putting this one down, every time I was going to something else in the book popped up. If you are a fan of a good psychological thriller look no further, this is a must read! I highly recommend this one and will be picking up the authors last book!
#TheGuiltTrip
Satisfying conclusion with too much spiraling prior. As truth was revealed three quarters into the book I was already exhausted by the jumping to conclusions that the main character took. Too much lying and deception, and no one confronts anyone to find out the truth.
It actually was very similar to the only other Sandie Jones novel I have read, The Other Woman, in that the MC and the readers are set on a crash course with misdirection. In conclusion, I found the end to be very good but not worth the exhausting journey to get there.
I won this ebook from Minotaur Books through #NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
This soap opera of a story kept me waiting till the end and by then I wanted a bigger payoff. It was just ok for me.
