This incredible new series, by Author Carolyn Brown, has already found its place in my heart! The loveable Ryan family has seen their share of hard times, as well as, the good ones, but with the return of retired Air Force medic, Jesse Ryan, the Texas summer promises to get hotter! Unsure as to why his used to be best friend, Addy, cut their friendship off when he enlisted, Jesse is unsure of the reception he will get from her, now that her and daughter Mia live at Sunflower Ranch to help take care of patriarch Sonny since his diagnosis of MS. Happy to be home at last, Jesse feels the same heart stopping sparks everytime he is near Addy but he is getting only smart remarks and innuendos from Addy's daughter Mia. What is the cause of Mia's animosity towards him? Will he be able to change her attitude towards him or will he lose his last chance to get Addy back where she belongs in his life? Addy is a nervous wreck knowing that daughter Mia and Jesse are not even aware of the secret she has tried to protect for years. Will the decisions that Mia makes dislodge the truth about her father's identity or will it cause more problems? Will Jesse be able to handle the truth and move forward or will the secret that Addy has kept from him push him away? Will love be able to conquer all or will the pain and old hurts of the past destroy Jesse and Addy's chance of happiness? Author Carolyn Brown has so much talent with writing from the heart! Everytime I read one of her masterpieces, I am immediately swept away within the pages and I continue to be there until the end! I am anxiously awaiting the next book that my favorite author releases next!
3.5 stars. Thank you to Netgalley and Forever publishing for allowing me to read this eARC. It was really sweet and entertaining, but it definitely had its flaws. This book is about Addy and Jesse. Jesse was an air force medic and now is coming home to his family ranch. Addy is a nurse and now takes full time care of Jesse's parents as his dad has MS. She also helps on the ranch along with her daughter, Mia. Addy and Jesse were best friends growing up and right before he deployed they had one night of passion and Mia is the result. Addy kept it a secret and thinks she's the only one that knows, but that's not necessarily the case. The secret baby trope is not a HUGE deal to me, but if you hate it then you really will not like this book. Her only reason for keeping the secret is to protect him so he wouldn't give up his dream, etc. and I don't think that is fair. He was a grown man capable of making his own decisions and instead she robbed him, his parents, and their daughter the chance to be a family for the first 20 years of Mia's life. Therefore, this book, even though it has one of my favorite tropes, wasn't my favorite. I loved the first love, second chance element, but not the whole part about the secret baby. The parents were great, the discussion of adoption was great, and the overall charm was fun. I didn't love the epilogue as its so overdone, but I'd still recommend this book and will read more from this author.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Addy and Jesse end up together and adopt twin boys together. One of Jesse's brothers moves home to be the town doctor and the next book is his.
Small Town Charm:
I read this short story as a part of the bind up with Second Chance at Sunflower Ranch. This is a super short story about a girl named Cricket who is a plus sized book store owner and gardener. A new pharmacist named Bryce comes into town and he has eyes for Cricket. In addition to this romance, there is a girl that was super rude to Cricket growing up who now needs a friend and there is some redemption in their friendship. I loved seeing their friendship grow and the former "Belle" grow up a little, but I though tit was pretty unrealistic. I'm a hard sell on short stories and this one is no different. If it was longer it would've been better but I liked our main character and thought this was charming, even if it was full of instalove and stuff that would never happen in real life.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this.
I loved this book! Right from the first page to the last, this book offers a gripping story with characters that are true to life, and have flaws, weaknesses and traits that are relatable. This secret child, second chance at love story is entertaining and captivating.
Addy is a heroine to be admired. She has an inner strength of will and determination that helped her raise her daughter as a single mother. Yes she had help, but she persevered with her dream of being a nurse and kept moving forward and never derided the father of her child. She made a choice to not tell Jesse that he was a father in order to allow him to pursue his dream of being in the military. She knew he would have given up his dream to return to marry her and raise his child with her if he had known about their child. She also didn’t want a child to be the reason they married. Addy has been in love with Jesse since she was a young teenager, but never told him how she felt before he enlisted for fear of ruining their friendship. They had only been intimate the one night, just before he left. Now twenty years later, Jesse has retired from the military and returned home to the family ranch to take over the operations for his ill father. Addy knows it it time to let Jesse know that he has a daughter, and for her daughter, Mia, to find out who is her father.
Jesse is a man of conviction, compassion and action. He is ready to leave the military behind and assume control of the family ranch. He has always loved life on the ranch and his military dream did not diminish that in any way. He has fulfilled his dream of travelling the world, serving his country and making a difference, and is now ready to run the ranch. He knew Addy had a grown daughter, but hadn’t realized they both lived and worked on the ranch. He never understood why she cut off all contact between them after he enlisted, and has missed his childhood best friend over the past twenty years. Jesse is hoping for a chance to renew their friendship and maybe a little more. He has never been able to forget her or his feelings for her. Finding out he is father comes as a shock at first, but also makes him more determined to reconnect with Addy and build a relationship with his rather belligerent and stand-offish teenage daughter. Mia doesn’t make things easy for anyone on the ranch so Addy and Jesse decide not to reveal that he is her father just yet. Neither know Mia’s secrets or just what kind of chaos will ensue. Addy and Jesse soon discover that their connection is deeper than ever and perhaps now they can make a future together that they had never dared to dream about. They just have to deal with Mia, the town gossips and detractors, and family troubles first.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I have never been disappointed by books written by this author, and this one is a perfect read after two emotionally draining books.
Abby and Jesse have quite a story for us. Best friends in High School, and he takes off after graduation to the Air Force. She supports his dream, but finds herself pregnant and moves away to continue nursing school.
It is twenty years later, and both have returned home to Sunflower Ranch. In a story of a family is who you choose, with unconditional support, Jesse is home and will be taking over the family ranch. Due to his father's health, Addy is back as his nurse. Mia, Addy’s daughter, is testing her mother's patience, but a big help on the ranch. Will Jesse and Addy stay friends or become more?
Thank you to NetGalley and Forever(Grand Central Publishing); this is my voluntary review.
My Thoughts
People live with regrets of various types all their lives.
For single mom Addison Hall her biggest regret is high school best friend, and secret love, Jesse Ryan.
Retired from his 20-year span in the Air Force Jesse has returned home to Sunflower ranch, and if his cards play out correctly, to Addy herself along with their now nineteen-year-old daughter Mia.
As second chances go these two are long overdue, with a lot of water under the bridge between them Jesse has to pull out all the stops before even getting close to becoming a family man at long last.
Though their road has been long and filled with unexpected pitfalls along the way for Jesse and Addy the journey shaped both of them into someone well worth waiting for when the end of it is one that has the capability to bring them together forever.
Filled with the small town atmosphere one comes to expect taking place in the background of a story written by this particular author, that and it’s eclectic cast of characters come to vivid life making the reader feel right at home as they enjoy each chapter of the book.
As series firsts go this one aptly sets the stage for future books to come and I am looking forward to more about the Ryan family when they do.
Both the full length novel and included novella story have great romance pairings and both are charming in their turn.

Addy and Jesse were best friends in high school, vowing to never take their relationship further so they didn’t ruin that friendship. They only broke the vow once, right before Jesse left home to join the Air Force.
Fast forward twenty years, Jesse is back home, Addy and her daughter Mia are living with Jesse’s parents, taking care of them and their ranch. Addy and Jesse slowly redevelop their friendship, but can it ever be more? What secret is Addy hiding?
This book is by an author that I always enjoy reading, and the start to a new series. I really liked this book and look forward to the next book in the Sunflower Ranch series.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
A great start to this new series. Addy and Jesse were best friends for years. Although they each had feelings fir the other beyond friendship they never acted on them until they were 18 and Jesse was leaving for the Air Force.
Their one night together resulted in a pregnancy but Addy didn't want him to give up his dream so she cut all ties. Flash ahead many years and she returns to his family ranch as a nurse for his dad who's suffering from MS. The ties are as strong as ever and when Jesse learns the truth about Mia being his daughter he's more committed than ever to Jesse.
Along the way there's bumps and roadblocks, but Jesse snd Addy face them together. It's a great story about second chances, family, and forgiveness
I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinions.
For the most part I enjoyed this book. It drug in a few parts and I lost interest for a while. Mia's smart mouth got old quickly.
It's never too late to get a second chance!
Jesse is back home, retired after twenty years in the Air Force, and surprised to find Addy, his high school best friend, firmly ensconced on his family ranch, taking care of his parents along with her nineteen-year-old daughter. While some romances are like a roller coaster of emotions, this one is more sedate, more like a carousel ride, still plenty of fun beautiful in its own way. There aren't any surprises along the way, just a beautifully-written, poignant story of a family finding its way back to where it should have been all along.
This author is one of my favorites and can always be counted on for a story full of emotional depth and heartwarming family values. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves contemporary cowboy romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
3.5 stars
This is the first book in the Ryan family series. Jesse is returning after being in the Air Force for 20 years. He left his best friend, Addy, behind and lost track of her. Addy wrote to him for six weeks and then all communication stopped. Jesse never even bothered to find out why she stopped communicating with him - instead, he just went about his life. For 20 years.
Turns out Addy had kept a pretty big secret. For 20 years. When Jesse retired and moved back to the ranch, he found Addy living at his home with his parent. She was a nurse and his father had ailing health, so Addy served as his private nurse and also a part-time ranch hand. But she had replaced Jesse as her best friend with the town doctor, Grady. Only Grady turned out to be a real tool.
This book was cute, but not great. I mean who loses touch with their childhood best friend for 20 years and never even tries to find out why one of them ceased all communication? That was disappointing to me. And this little town seems like it has a fair share of weirdos in it - I’m used to reading about small ranch towns where everyone is awesome.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated above are mine without biases.
Good enough but was obvious f on the first chapter everything that was going to happen.
Just your standard everyday romance.
Addison "Addy" Hall is a live-in nurse at Sunflower Ranch whose job it is to care for the elderly ranch owners, Sonny and Pearl Ryan. Sonny has been diagnosed with MS and having Addy helping out full time makes the whole family feel more secure. Addy's nineteen-year-old daughter Mia also lives and works on the ranch. Mia doesn't know who her father is. Addy has kept that secret all these years. But Mia's father, Jesse Ryan is retiring from the Air Force after twenty years and coming home to run the ranch and help care for his adoptive parents. Addy knows she is going to have to tell Jesse the truth. Then maybe together they can tackle telling Mia.
Jesse Ryan is more than ready to retire from the Air Force and return home. He thinks he is prepared to be there with Addy Hall, the live-in nurse for his father. They were best friends since they were kids. They never wanted to take a chance on ruining that friendship but then crossed the line once - the night before Jesse left for the Air Force. He never understood why Addy stopped communicating with him. Upon returning home to the ranch he discovered they had a daughter together and that Addy didn't want to tell him she was pregnant because she was concerned he would insist on marriage. In her mind that probably would have ruined his dream of serving his country. Jesse believes he and Addy have a good chance of having their relationship become more than friendship. Time will tell.
Second Chance at Sunflower Ranch by Carolyn Brown begins the Ryan Family series. This is a wonderful second chance romance story. I was emotionally invested in this story from the very beginning. I felt the family's pain when Mia leaves. I felt their joy when Mia returns. I enjoyed sharing the experiences and feelings of Addy and Jesse as their relationship develops. They come together so naturally. Ms. Brown always tells her stories in such a way that I feel the reader can't help but be drawn in. The Ryan family is one that I'm sure I will greatly enjoy following as the series continues.

This is a wonderful book about family, love, and second chances. Jess and Addy were best friends growing up. Then the night before he left to serve in the Air Force. they made love. They haven't seen each other in twenty years and now he is back home for good. Addy has a surprise for him.
I've read just a couple of books by this author. I liked this one, there were quite a few characters and it sets up what I assume 2 more books for the series. My complaints were that the characters talked to themselves out loud a little much. And everyone just seemed so forgiving and accepting. I can't imagine if it were to happen to me that I'd be so calm. I'm sure I'd get to where they all did eventually, but I was just waiting for something that never happened, and it didn't feel realistic to me. I enjoyed that there was a lot of story going on between Jessie and addie, his parents, bothers and addy's daughter, it definitely held my interest.
The 2nd book included was shorter, much lighter and fun and really sweet. I enjoyed it, and have already downloaded the first book in that series to catch up.
Jesse went into the Air Force which was is dream. Addy was his best friend since they were children.
After serving 20 years Jesse is back home on the ranch. Addy is a nurse and currently lives on the ranch with her 19-year-old daughter to take care of Jesse's dad. Addy stopped all contact with Jesse soon after he left for service. He chooses not to keep trying to connect with her after she refused his calls. Mia is Addy's daughter and has worked on the ranch since she was 15. Mia has completed 1 year of college, but is dating a guy with a bad reputation.
Pearl and Sonny are Jesse's parent they figured out that Mia is Jesses daughter. Addy chose to not tell anyone who the father is and Mia has been asking about her dead-beat dad for quite a while.
Mia decides to run off they the boyfriend and will not listen to her mother about him. Jesse figures out that he is her father, but Addy puts off telling Mia. The doctor Grady comes to the ranch weekly to check on Sonny and is a friend of Addy.
Upon returning to the ranch and reconnected with Addy their friendship is strong again. Will they finally realize that they make a great couple?
Small Town Charm.
Cricket has lived in Bloom, Texas all her life and loves it. She has been bullied over the years by the Belles. Bryce buys the pharmacy and the mothers are soon after him to marry their daughters. Bryce is sent to Cricket's farm for fresh produce and is instantly smitten. Cricket has a hard time believing he is interested in her. Bryce is renting an apartment from two older ladies that are good friends with Cricket. And of course, the grapevine is ripe with gossip. Great short story.
I love Carolyn's books and recommend them to everyone.
A sweet and charming second chance romance. The teenaged daughter provides some humor, sass, and heartbreaking moments. A lovely family living on a ranch in a small town. Gossip central! I look forward to reading the romances of the other two brothers. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.
This was my first Carolyn Brown book so I had my hopes set really high which may have been why this one kind of fell flat for me. From the very beginning I really enjoyed Jesse and Addy's relationship but about 30% in things started to fall flat. Conversations felt forced and most of the dialogue seemed to only be included to show us something. Plot points were not shown to us, they were told
Also it felt like the author was having to constantly be remind us how country these people are. The near constant song references drove me insane. This was definitely a me thing since so many people loved this book. There just seemed to be so much unnecessary drama in this book, and while this may happen in some small towns, it just felt over the top. Will I still read the next book in the series? Probably but maybe not right away.
Overall, I did like this book but it was very middle of the road for me which is always hard to review. I will probably read more of her books in the future but I will probably not make them a priority.
I read A LOT. So when I say I have many favorite books, its true, Second Chance At Sunflower Ranch is now on that list. Carolyn Brown is so good at her craft that I felt like I was part of the story and wouldn't have minded being with a hot cowboy/former soldier as my love interest :) The setting was already beautiful in my mind, helped along by the gorgeous cover! Just a fabulous read all the way through.
.This book has beautiful artwork. It is a soothing read, and all the character are supportive of each other. This is a story about friendship and kindness and finding love. The storyline is awesome and the characters are realistic. I love every one of Carolyn Brown's books and have found over the years that she has grown as a writer.
I have read a number of Carolyn Brown’s books in the past, but this was my first of her ‘cowboy’ books. I found the themes very much the same - family connections, forgiveness, and a clean romance. Jesse is returning home to his family ranch after retiring from a military career as a combat medic. His childhood best friend, Addy, and her daughter Mia are living with his parents on the ranch and helping take care of his father, who has been diagnosed with MS. Despite being best friends until Jesse her whole life, Jesse has not talked with Addy since he left for basic training, and she is hiding a pretty big secret.
I found the characters likeable, and I liked the interaction between Jesse and Mia as the got to know each other, and seeing how Jesse reconnected with Addy. My only problem with the story was how little emotion there was when Addy revealed her secret- it seems like there would have been more hurt, resentment, or at the very least some hurt feelings and regret.
A solid story from Carolyn Brown - pick it up if you like reading clean romances and stories centered around family.
