Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for this copy.
Whitney, a single mom has always been overprotective of her 16 year old daughter Amelia. When Amelia meets her new friend Lauren she becomes much more distant. Whitney reluctantly drops her off at Lauren’s house for a sleep over one night and when she returns the next day to get her after Amelia won’t answer her phone, she is stunned to find an older couple at the house and they have no clue who Amelia is.
This book started out strong and I enjoyed the POV between present Whitney and past Whitney. This isn’t your typical runaway teenage daughter thriller and the slow snippets of clues really build the explosive twist at the end.
Highly recommend.
I can't tell you how much I am enjoying Amber Garza's books! Full of twists and turns, they keep me absolutely riveted. Where I Left Her was no exception! I think I read it in record time! Well written, compelling characters and a disturbingly good story! You'll be watching your daughters just a bit closer after reading this!
A great fast-paced thriller with an unreliable narrator. I will be recommending this one as a great beach read this summer!
YOWZA this book is SO FREAKING GOOD! Told mostly from Whitney’s POV alternating between first and third persons in nonlinear timelines, it left me absolutely breathless and already so excited for her next book to come out!!! There are lies and intrigue and roller coasters and gasping and cringing and so much more! Amber Garza is an auto buy author for me already!
Fast-paced and compelling. A recommended purchase for collections where domestic suspense is popular.
This was a good read and keep me guessing till the end BUT it wasn't as good as her last book was for me. I found the pacing to be a little off for me but the story was a good one with twists and turns. The reliability of a narrator is always something that I find enjoyable in a book and this didn't disappoint for me. I found myself trying to figured out what the truth was and how things developed through the present and the past was well done. Overall, it was a good story and I will continue to read books by Garza. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to the publisher for my copy of this one - all opinions are my own.
I must say, this is a totally unique story! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in, and it definitely does not play out like a normal missing person/abduction story...... without spoilers, I must say I did NOT expect where this story goes and how it unfolds, and I LOVE being surprised by the direction of a plot!
I really enjoyed the pacing of this one as well, it unwinds a the perfect speed where you know something is amiss but clearly there is more to the story than meets the eye. Each new reveal was just as delicious as the last and it comes out to the most delightful twists in the end that you won't be disappointed by.
Perfect summer reading!!
I really enjoyed this book a lot. I did not see the twist at the end, pretty much up until the very end. So wonderfully written, I could not put it down. I would love to read more from this author. I love her writing style and it truly did not feel like I was reading, but like I was fully sucked into the story, observing everything happening around me.
My Review:
Wow, wow, wow what an awesome read this was. I loved every minute of it. Amber Garza you are my new favorite author. This was my first book by her and it sure as heck did not disappoint. I can’t wait to read the rest of your books.
I want to start off by saying how much I loved this book. What really caught my eye right off the bat was the blurb. I really enjoy books about kids. Whether they are missing or even murdered I love them all. I really think it’s because children are so pure and innocent. This is why I want to know who would want to cause them any kind of harm. I especially love the teenage age group as they are right there on the line between a child and an adult. Their mind and how they think is so interesting to me. The character I loved the most in this book was the mom of the teenage girl that was missing. She was so determined in trying to find her missing daughter at all costs. She crossed so many lines and didn’t care. I know I would be the same way if my son went missing. Now let’s talk about that ending. You know the saying Your Past Will Always Come Back To Haunt You, well that definitely applies to this book. I can’t say too much as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but this rings so true to this book. I loved how the author went back and forth between past and present. It was the perfect way to let the readers know how the past affected the future. Also, I couldn’t believe the way this book ended. I was shocked to the core. I thought I knew what the real story was and what was happening but I didn’t. I loved that about this book. It kept me guessing the whole time and all the way up to the end. This book had it all and I’m so glad I read it. Thanks Amber Garza for such a great book.
Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This book started and ended strongly for me, but fell short a bit in the middle. It centers on Whitney, whose 16-year-old daughter has become increasingly distant and "teenagery" over the recent months. She meets a new friend name Lauren; Whitney drops her off to spend the night at Lauren's house, but when she returns, the elderly couple has no idea who Lauren or Amelia are.
This drop-off scenario is a great premise and was suitably creepy, but the next part of the book uncovered Whitney as being completely oblivious to what is going on in her daughter's life, and not that worried that she seemed to be missing. I liked the alternating voices between Whitney's past and present, but the stories of her past never really helped me connect to why she was like she was now, or honestly to relate to her at all.
The end of the book contains a few big twists, some of which were more predictable than others. The book ended in a dark tone, which I enjoyed, and immediately made me like the slower parts of the book better.
All in all, this was an interesting story. Though missing super likeable characters, it contained some unique twists and moved at an overall fast pace. I'd recommend it to those who enjoy domestic suspense and psychological thrillers. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
How can a book be so addicting and DARK, but also heartbreaking? Well, this is that kind of a book! I don't know how Amber did it but she shook me to the core! I was deeply invested in this story and had a hard time putting it down! Highly recommended!
Whitney drops off her 16 year old daughter at a friend’s house for a sleepover. When she returns the next day to pick her up, an elderly couple answer the door, with no knowledge of any sleepovers, stating her daughter was never there. And “Where I Left Her” gets off to a rousing start, and never slows down, as the suspense builds with each chapter. We get snippets of a dark side to Whitney, which gradually unfolds and keeps the reader off balance. Deftly told in alternating time frames, this is a quick read, with lots of twists to keep you guessing. Highly entertaining! I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Mira is one of my favorite publishers, and I was really looking forward to starting Where I Left Her. Give me a mother/child dynamic with plenty of tension and I'm one hundred percent on board, so I quickly dove in.
Whitney is looking forward to a quiet night of Netflix after she drops her daughter, Amelia, off at her friend's house. Amelia has been distant, but she chalks it up to a teenage phase and pushes her doubt about Amelia's new friend out of her mind. But when she doesn't hear from Amelia the next morning, she returns to the house, only to find a woman who has no knowledge of Amelia or Lauren. As the hours tick by, Whitney fears the worst, and as she searches for her daughter, she begins to realize that Amelia has been keeping secrets of her own.
I liked this book.
Whitney was an interesting protagonist, more unlikeable than likeable, and for the most part, relatable. She's a mother having a difficult time transitioning to the next phase in her relationship with her daughter, holding on to the reins too tight but hesitant to give her sixteen year old more freedom. As with many of us, her past leeches into her decision making, and the flashbacks we get of Whitney's toxic relationship with Millie add to her anxiety and propel the plot.
I appreciated the examination of friendship dynamics, how bonds can form later in life and aren't always dictated by longevity. I also liked the parallels between Whitney and Millie and Amelia and Lauren.
Garza also did a great job setting up doubt for a variety of characters, letting the reader fill in the gaps between truth and suspicion. This worked well, although I will say most of the danger is understated and subtle. It's a quiet tension that underscores the search, and while I didn't always care for the ebb and flow, I think many readers will find this enjoyable.
Overall, Where I Left Her is a taut, eerie suspense full of twists and lies. I'd recommend to fans of light psychological suspense or unlikeable protagonists with edgy histories.
Thank you to Mira and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for honest review consideration.
I enjoy a good mystery and Where I Left Her sounded very promising. Unfortunately, it never worked for me. I didn't enjoy the characters or the story. Both had an unlikability factor that I just couldn't get past.
Terror, mystery, twists and turns are all on board with this thrilling thrill ride of a thriller. Grab a beverage, put on something comfy and prepare for intrigue.
I flew through this book! This was the first one I read by this author and I am definitely going back to read her other psychological thriller. This book has a few different twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end (which I didn't see coming, but knew something else had to be revealed). The back and forth with the three storylines didn't take away from the story at all and it was easy to follow and keep straight. The writing flowed very well and made the book go by fast. Highly recommend for anyone who likes the psychological thriller genre.
This book was sent to me by Netgalley on Kindle for review. This is a character driven mystery with several twists and turns. I was aggravated from the beginning with the protagonist...the mom. She was careless with her daughter. It was also problematic reading about now and then. However, the mystery of the Daughter and what ensues, when she discovers a new friend, is surprising. This is a quick read...try it.
I’ve not read any of Amber Garza’s previous works, but after reading Where I Left Her, that will change.
This story was a dark, twisty thriller. I found it to be well-written and well-paced. It kept me engaged and I couldn’t put it down because I wanted to read on to see what happened. There were some pretty unexpected twists and the story ended with a bang.
I highly recommend this novel.
Thank you to NetGalley, Amber Garza, and Harlequin/Mira for the opportunity to review this ARC. This review and all opinions are my own.
A psychological thriller that kept me riveted from beginning to end. Whitney, a single mother ,was raising Amelia, a teenager ,who was acting out and being secretive. Amelia had also dumped her friend group during this time and was now friends with a girl named Lauren, someone Whitney knew nothing about. Whitney felt that there was something off about Lauren but couldn't quite put her finger on it. Amelia asked Whitney for a ride to her friend Laurens to stay the night. Whitney silenced her mothering instinct to go inside and meet Laurens parents. She knew Amelia was sixteen and she had to giver her some space to grow up. So Whitney dropped of Amelia and went on her way. When she went the next day to pick Amelia up she was not there and was told by the people at the door she was never there. Whitney was confused and frightened and set out to search for her daughter and during the search many secrets were uncovered from Whitney's past. The story weaved back and forth between Whitney's past with her best friend Millie and the present during the search for Amelia. Each time we learned about Whitney's past a part of her secret was revealed and the end was a mind blowing twist. I would highly recommend this book.
Disclaimer: I got this book in exchange for an honest review.
Whitney drops off her 15 year old daughter Amelia at a sleepover which seems like an ordinary day until she tries to pick up her daughter. There’s a lot that goes on in this book and not even Whitney can be trusted . It’s a very fast-paced book that took me by surprise, but some parts (I won’t say what yet because this has not been released) were a little rushed.
