A wonderful short story collection that I savored over a few weeks. I read the author’s The Shell Seekers first when I was in college, years ago, and still return to it when I am looking for a comfort read. These stories give exactly the same warm and fuzzy feeling in smaller more bite-sized pieces.

These are fifteen upbeat stories with the perfect amount of romance to lift one’s mood. If you need a pick me up kind of book this is truly the collection for you.

I am on a lot of book groups on FB and Instagram. When the aunt in the nursing home wants a book with nice stories, no bad language, no sex, this is the book for them. This is a collection of short stories and I believe they are from the 90's. The book is completely wholesome with a touch of God. They are not religious. The pastors spinster daughter meets the towns eligible bachelor and they are assumed to live happily ever after. Christmas Eve church service is the place to meet your long lost love type of short story. All of the stories have at least an implied happy ending. Some of these stories were published previously in some "woman's magazines." I am not sure saying that is even acceptable to say these days. No offence is meant. I could only take these stories small doses because they were so perfect and tied up neatly.

These stories are well written and will be a certain set of people's cup of tea. I want to thank #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress for a copy of #APlaceLikeHome.

Reading A Place Like Home by Rosamunde Pilcher was like returning home. Long a favorite author of mine, it was wonderful to get lost in her words on the page. No one writes like she did and it was so relaxing to sit with a cuppa and spend time with her characters again.

A Place Like Home is a collection of short stories, many of which take place by the sea, or in the kitchen by a beloved Aga range with a cup of tea and biscuits. She evokes such a homely feel in her stories that you feel as you are there and a calm descends over you. Once the story has ended you wish that you had spent more time with the characters because in the short time you've known them, you've developed such an interest in them that you want...no, need to know more, but she's just left you with that tantalizing little nugget of their lives and you can imagine what they've done once the story ends, it's all up to you.

Thank you to the author, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC of this collection of stories in exchange for my honest review. I couldn't be more grateful!

I was overjoyed to see that this book was available! Rosamunde Pilcher is one of my all time favorite authors. Her books always transported me to places I will never travel to in real life. I want to thank whoever discovered these short stories and decided to publish. I am sure you are bringing happiness to many people like me.

I enjoyed each story in this book and stopped after each one and let the story's feeling stay with me, before I began the next one. It would be very difficult to pick a favorite among them, but I will say that the story about the bride bought me to tears. All of them touched my heart.

I would advise all fans of Rosamunde's work to definitely pick up this book. To the people who have not read her books, this is a good introduction to her work, and then lucky you! You have many other books of hers to read afterwards for the first time!

I want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for giving me the pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.

From the Literary Estate of Rosamunde Pilcher, this is an anthology of fifteen short stories that were not previously published in book form. Many were written for magazines, and the enclosed stories were discovered in the British Library by a literary agent.

A short history of this fabulous author, who sadly passed away in 2019, reveals that she started writing while in the Royal Navy WRNS during World War Two, but used the pseudonym Jane Fraser when she published her first novel in 1949. It wasn't until the age of sixty that Ms.Pilcher began using her own name when her glorious novel THE SHELL SEEKERS debuted. Since that stand-out book, she presented to her loyal followers a not-long-enough list of wonderful novels. Ms. Pilcher also, as noted above, wrote many short stories for publication in women's magazines.

A PLACE LIKE HOME has typical Pilcher tales. From the young woman escaping a failed relationship who finds peace in the countryside, and possibly romance in SOMEONE TO TRUST, to THE HOLIDAY, when a long married wife plans a beautiful get-away hoping to rekindle the flame. I think the one I loved the most was the main titled one, A PLACE LIKE HOME, about another young woman who is recovering from surgery, but has no family nearby. Her boss arrives at the hospital with orders for her to get away for a while, and arranges for her to travel to Scotland to stay with friends of his on their farm. It was heartwarming, and had a particularly sweet ending.

One of the talents of Rosamunde Pilcher was to nail human emotions without glorifying or denigrating them. Her characters are all too human, and, due to her long life, she could describe a teenager's angst, as well as the wisdom of an elderly woman. Pilcher loved Cornwall, and her knowledge of the flora and fauna flows through all of her stories. She equally adored Scotland, and readers can easily picture the gorse, the heather, and the bubbling burn flowing over the dark stones.

Rosamunde Pilcher's fans will thoroughly enjoy this delightful, emotional, and poignant set of stories. As readers can tell, Ms. Pilcher is one of my very favorite authors, and I re-read WINTER SOLSTICE each December, and SEPTEMBER each autumn. That's why I am so honored to review A PLACE LIKE HOME.

If you are a fan of Rosamund's Pilcher's previous novels and short stories you will love this collection. She is a breath of fresh air with the timeless stories and the lovely settings in Scotland, Northumberland and Cornwall.

Fifteen stories with a bit of romance, some with personal relationship conundrums and interspection. My favorite books remain The Shell Seekers and Coming Home, I highly recommend those large books.

Each short story is preceded by a sketch along with the title. The romance story lines are not long and complicated, rather the attractions and commitments happen quite quickly. There are stories of loneliness as well and Pilcher brings the emotions to life on the page.
I recommend this book for a quick read and one that will take you armchair traveling to a different time period. A gentler kinder depiction of a lifestyle in the British Isles long before a pandemic.

Publication date is July 27, 2021 by St. Martin's Press. Genre general fiction; romance; women's fiction

When I saw there was a "new" collection of stories by Rosamunde Pilcher, my heart initially leapt. Then my head murmured that anything not previously published might not be of the quality of her previous, much-loved books. Sadly but unsurprisingly, my killjoy head proved correct. While these stories have the appealing, beautifully described settings and cozy details of home that characterize all of Ms. Pilcher's works, each was entirely predictable, and as a result, I ended up skimming many of them. That said, Rosamunde Pilcher has been one of my go-to authors when I need a comforting read - which has been often this past year - and while these stories are not near the level of her best work in my opinion, they are certainly a pleasant diversion for any devoted fan. It was a generally enjoyable fast 3-star read, and I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC of the book.

What a treat to read A Place Like Home, a collection of short stories previously unpublished in book form. Reading a Rosamunde Pilcher book is like being home. Being someplace safe and comforting where there is always a happy ending. Her sense of place is an important aspect of her writing and one I treasure. I can picture the scenery, feel the warmth of a mug of tea on my hands, revel in being with loved ones. Many of these stories were written years ago, at times lending a slightly dated feel but I did not find that too off putting. I highly recommend any book by Rosamunde Pilcher and can imagine rereading these stories in the future.

A Place Like Home was pure escape reading. I was thrilled to learn that Aoife Inman had searched through the British library to collect short stories that Rosamunde Pilcher had written for magazines between 1976 and 1984. These stories are published here in A Place Like Home, and while this is not a "literary" collection, they do provide what Rosamunde Pilcher did best. Comfort, lovely domestic details, a sense of some of the bigger questions in life, and ways that we might carry on in dealing with them are all found here. I did find myself rolling my eyes a few times; it's a given that as soon as an eligible man or woman appears in the story, the reader is pretty sure they will end up together. Sometimes this happens with alarming speed, with the characters falling in love or even agreeing to marry within a few pages. But this was the perfect book to read after the pandemic has raged for over a year (and we're not done yet). Escape, comfort, gentle happiness, and the sense that things just may turn out after all is what Rosamunde Picher did best.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book.

I love Rosamunde Pilcher, always have, so this was a delight to read these mostly unpublished stories. I enjoyed all but maybe 2 of them. She had a gift for making different locales come to life, which makes her writing so enjoyable.
