Scout and (dog) company of Bark Park look for clues to investigate squeaking noises heard by several patrons of the dog park. Good children's book, part of a series.
This is the second Bark Park book that has dogs solving a trio of mysteries in their dog park. The main sleuth is Scout, a cute puppy who has a gang to help support him and solve the mysteries. Each dog is a different breed and has their own personality. The three mysteries in this one involve Missing Blueberries, Figuring out why the new dog wears a leash in the Dog Park and determining what Sprinkles is wearing and why? This is a simple chapter book for young readers, but the mysteries held the attention of my two oldest grandchildren. My grandson is able to read this book himself, although he still prefers me to read to him, so we take turns. The illustrations are very cute and my granddaughter loved the various dogs. The stories are cute and engaging, and will be enjoyable for anyone who loves dogs, as it’s told from their point of view. There are also a few short nonfiction sections in the back pages that give more information on topics that are brought up in the book to encourage further discussion or research. This book would make a good addition to a family, classroom, school or public library.
This is a cute beginner chapter book about a dog who loves solving mysteries. She discovers that she is involved in her own mystery one day at the dog park. Cute illustrations, great pace and appropriate reading level made this a great book for my 8 year old to enjoy.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity it read this book for my honest opinion.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book was enjoyed by my 5 year old but he didn’t ask to read it again, which would be a mark of a really great book in his eyes. Good illustration. Simple stories.
Where do I even begin with this book! My son LOVED it so much, and it has become his favorite children's book. He liked it so much that I ended up ordering the first book of the series so he can now read all of the stories whenever he wants.
One of the things my son liked the most was that the book was divided in three smaller stories. Because he is still too young to read the whole book by himself, we took turns reading paragraphs in each story so it was easier for him to follow along. We were able to take breaks because each "chapter" is a new story with the same characters and location. While I suggested to save the second and third story for the following night, my son liked the first one so much that we ended up finishing the book in one sitting. The characters are lovable, and each story has a plot easy to follow even for younger children. The "mysteries" that Scout, the main character, is trying to solve are situations that happen at any dog park we have taken our dog, so my son was able to easily picture what was happening. He also loved to take guesses about how the doggies would solve the mystery based on the pictures in the book and got excited every time he was right.
Overall, we loved the book. As a mom trying to instill the love for reading to my child,I enjoy finding books with stories that will keep his attention and will make him want to finish the book. This book achieved that, and like I mentioned before, it has become my son's favorite book to reach to read before bed.
Scout 🐶 is in a good mood and is headed to Bark Park. The previous day her human had taken her to the farmer’s market and bought her three containers of blueberries 🫐.
After checking on her friends who are also at the park Scout heads back to the bench where her human left her a bowl of blueberries only to find them gone.
Moments later all of the other dogs gather around Scout. They decide to investigate around the park. Scout tries to retrace her steps when she had come into the park. They ask some friends at the park—Tippy the squirrel 🐿 , Abigail the crow—and finally finds who took her blueberries. Thankfully, Scout still has two more containers of blueberries at home.
At the park Scout and her friends meet a new friend named Lulu who wears a leash. They group have to figure how to unclip the leash. Their next mystery is figuring out what another dog named Sprinkles is wearing. A cute story for kids. Would recommend.
Thank you to Brandi Dougherty, NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC of this book.
A book about a dog's adventures in the park. There are three different stories in the book and each one have some moral in it. Enjoyable but not thrilling.
Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a copy of "Scouting for Clues" in exchange for my honest review.
This is a delightful chapter book appropriate for young readers and a great read-out-loud for younger children and their parents/grandparents/caregivers. The graphics are colourful and the characters are cute. They would appeal to children because of the bright colours, absolutely gorgeous dogs and engaging stories.
The stories are about Scout and friends - Maggie, Gus, Rocky and Water. These pups delight in solving mysteries at their off-leash dog park "Bark Park". One story is about missing blueberries and the lesson that one should always ask before taking something. Another story is about meeting a new puppy who is shy and how they teach her that they are all friendly and excited for a new pal. They also set out to learn why she is on her leash inside the park. The final story is a mystery about why Sprinkles is wearing a pink knitted sweater.
This is the first book in the "Bark Park" series and it's off to a brilliant start.
This is such a cute book for a beginner reader to read. Scout is a small dog who loves going to the dog park! Every time he goes, there is a new mystery to solve!! This would be a great classroom read aloud or a tory to read to your children. This is also a great book for an early reader!!!!
I was very excited to read this book with my 3 year old son who is obsessed with dogs. We both really loved this book, which is actually 3 short stories in one. He loved pointing to all the different dogs and animals. The illustrations are beautiful and engaging and the real life facts and questions at the end of the book were so fun to encourage further discussions. I will definitely be picking up more books by this author.
Scouting for Clues by Brandi Dougherty is book 1 in the Bark Park series. With beautiful illustrations and 3 short fun mysteries, this beginning chapter book is a fun read for elementary school students. How can you not love dogs solving mysteries? My son was a huge fan of this book and he especially loved the short story format of this particular book. Highly recommended. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Well, this is a very fun and light-hearted read for me. I loved the illustrations and the cute mysteries these dogs get into solving. I also loved that the author added some facts to know regarding the "mysteries" solved at the end of the book. It's very fun to read and the beautiful illustrations added to my reading enjoyment with this book.
I loved this cute book! I thought it would be great for my son, who is soon to be 3 and it was too long. I enjoyed it though! great artwork, fun story, and fun characters!
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
My daughter enjoyed this book, I liked how the book was broken into three separate stories, so the length wouldn't deter any reluctant readers.
The story was simple and sweet. There's always some kind of mystery that needs solving at the Bark Park, and Scout and his doggy buddies are always up to the challenge. At the end of the book, there was some scientific facts regarding the plot of each mystery, that was nice.
Scout and her friends at Bark Park are back in an all-new novel, Scouting for Clues illustrated by Paige Pooler. This is certainly an excellent book to read to any child who is an ardent dog lover and a great start for some middlegrade readers. As before, I truly adore the artwork and found the stories and characters quite cute. I wouldn't say these are my favorite middlegrade books, but Epic! Originals definitely does a decent job at providing fun and engaging stories for young readers.
Just as the previous book existed in episodic-like chapters, so too does the second. Scout returns in the first chapter with The Missing Blueberries, a quick mystery regarding the disappearance of Scout's favorite snack once she and her human arrive at the dog park. The story and mystery are both super simple and fairly obvious to the older reader, however I can definitely see young kids engaging with the who did it plot.
This is also a fantastic story to use to teach new readers to the idea of foreshadowing, as the culprit is referenced very early on. It certainly isn't my favorite story or anything, but it's definitely not bad.
Eh, I'll be honest, I really didn't like The Leashed Puppy. Now, there's something to be said for the idea of making mistakes and fixing them. However, the fact that this puppy potentially had her life in danger bugged the heck out of me. Especially when it all happened because the dog park friends didn't understand why a precaution was being taken and decided to just...remove it.
I don't think this sends the best message to children in the end. Even if the book exists as a sort of learning opportunity and there's a fantastic little guide at the end to explain why some dogs need to be leashed for their own safety, if a young reader just skips over that one they're sort of missing the most important message.
The Mystery Material is the least educational of all the stories, I think. Paired with the blurb at the end of the book it's a nice little piece of learning--regarding how small dogs might need to wear sweaters to keep warm. But, in truth, this story made the whole "mystery" aspect of Scout's personality just a bit more annoying than usual.
It's actually really sad, for me at least. I like Scout, the main character, the least out of all the dogs in the book. I just generally don't care for her love of mysteries. It's not very...dog-like. And yet, all the other dogs have very dog-like personalities. I think the lack of continuity with this is a bit annoying. But, eh. That might just be me.

Read and reviewed by seven-year-old Amy.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC of this book.
This is a quick and fun read.
The main character in this book is Scout. She solves three mysteries. There are a total of three chapters in this book, and Scout solves one mystery in one chapter. It’s a tiny chapter book with many illustrations. This book teaches us about crows, dogs, and leashes, too.
I recommend this book for children 4 years and above.
I give this book 5/5 stars because I loved all of the three mysteries.
I did a read aloud with my 6 year old son with this book. He really enjoyed the story and the different mysteries solved in each chapter. He also said the pictures were great with very cute puppies.
Our hero investigator dog is looking forward to his bowl of blueberries (who knew?!) when they get stolen – which coincides with an unusual noise in the park. A lesson then follows in why dogs are on leashes, and the gang react to a friend of theirs wearing something unusual... We're on very familiar ground for those who have seen the first book in this series, but it's becoming clear that there is a purpose behind the tales, to introduce the young audience to what might almost be called dog proficiency. So they have a little bit of fun as well as lessons in not letting puppies off leashes, and so on. The usual house-style is present and correct here, so we get great illustrations, a touch of educational end-matter, and a light read - although as before this is definitely for the under-tens. I don't think the series will ever get more than three and a half stars from me, however, partly because it's all at such a lively pace you don't get to differentiate one mutt from the next.
This adorable series, Bark Park, is one of my daughter's favorite! And I can see why, these cozy little mysteries and cute dogs are wonderful. Each chapter is a different mystery Scout and the other dogs work together to solve and it's so sweet. I loved how at the end they explain more like "why dogs need leashes"
Thank you to the publisher for this copy to review!
This is such a cute book! My son was excited to see what mysteries the dog friends were going to solve. It was nice because the pages had large print with not too many words on it, just a paragraph and plenty of pictures so kids won’t get too overwhelmed trying to read on their own.
