Death in Bloom is a debut cozy mystery and I really enjoyed this one! Sierra works at The Flower House after a struggling career in Nashville. But when her first flower arranging workshop turns into a crime scene, Sierra is one of the first suspects on the list. Oh no!! Sierra was a great amateur sleuth and main character. Her friends, Deena & Calvin, were fun secondary characters and helped her solve this whodunit. Calvin had quite the flower puns throughout the novel which provided a few giggles. I think one of my favorite characters though was Granny Mae. She was so kind and sweet! I’m so excited to see where the rest of this series goes from here!
This has got to be the prettiest cozy mystery cover I have seen in a long time (and I love cozy mystery covers). The book itself does not disappoint, either!
Supper cute, lots of detail in the smaller bits, great witty conversation. This is a nice navy drew type murder mystery.
Sierra is a fun character who was working at a flower shop until her singing career takes off. Her boss takes a surprise trip leaving her to host the flower arrangement class. All goes well until someone ends up murdered.
I really enjoyed the characters and the mystery.

Sierra wants to be a singer, not the owner of the Flower House (and Gus the dog) in Aerieville but.....She's moved home and is working for Felix part time. Her flower arranging seminar should have been a fun thing but unfortunately Abe (who cozy readers know will turn out to be disliked by pretty much everyone) dies- poisoned! Everyone at the event, including Sierra, is a suspect. She's got more problems though because Felix has taken off for parts unknown, leaving her the option to buy the business for one dollar. This is the first in a planned series so there's a bit of the set up here as the characters are introduced. Sierra shines and I liked her new friends and family (especially Granny). Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. There aren't too many surprises but I enjoyed this asa. fun read.
I have been looking forward to reading another cozy mystery and this book was just what I needed! I really enjoyed this book because I loved the setting- a small town local flower shop. I also thought the characters were fun to read about too. I ended up finishing this one in a day and now I really want to go buy fresh flowers to brighten up my home!
Sierra works at a flower shop and one day, the owner- her boss, just leaves and tells her the shop is hers if she wants it. Sierra, feeling very overwhelmed, tries it out for a while, but bad things keep happening to her, her friends, and the shop. She tries to uncover the unexplained disappearance of her boss and solve the murder that took place in her shop. Is her boss’s disappearance connected to the murder of a rival garden store owner? Are her friends really her friends? Who can she trust? Find out all this and more while reading Death in Bloom by Jess Dylan.
First time reading this author. While I liked the premise, I never really made a connection to the MC.. I did enjoy the mystery and it kept me guessing. I liked some of the other characters and liked the setting.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest reveiw.
I love a fun murder mystery and this is exactly what Death in Bloom is. The characters, the setting, If you're in need of a fun, cute book to entertain you, this is it. And the cover is stunning!
Cute cute cute!!!! I am a huge fan of cozy mysteries! The Flower House was the perfect setting. I loved the flower themes, I loved the flower/plant puns from Calvin, and I loved Granny Mae's superstitions and remedies!
The mystery was great. I truly had no idea 'who dunnit' up until it was revealed. Everyone was suspicious, everyone seemed to have a motive and they were all being sneaky. I really loved having so many suspects and trying to work it out in my head. Sierra was an awesome leading lady, Gus was a sweet comedic relief (who doesn't love Corgis?!), and Deena was an awesome supportive friend!
I am really looking forward to The Flower House Mysteries to be a series! I want book 2 now!! 😍
Good start to a new series! This was filled with fun characters and fun mysteries. I’m excited to see where the longer running mystery leads, and what happens next. I like that there’s also a love interest that’s not yet a love interest, and there’s mystery there too!
Death In Bloom by Jess Dylan is a debut cozy mystery that almost hit all the right notes for me.
Ms. Dylan's plot is smoothly paced for most of the story but I felt that it slowed down some in the middle. The characters are all well drawn in this book as I could see Sierra growing more confident as the story continued. Calvin and Deena were great secondary characters that added dimension to the plot as they all took part in solving the mystery. Limited suspects and several twists kept the story moving to the dramatic conclusion. The characters and the community of Aerieville, Tennessee provide a promising future for more cozy mysteries by this author.
Thank you NetGalley, Jess Dylan and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of Death in Bloom. This is my personal review.
Death in Bloom is the first in the new series A Flower House Mystery.
Sierra Ravenswood works at the Flower House in Aerieville, Tennessee.. She needed a place to start over after not making it doing her dream job in Nashville as a singer. Being back home was not what she saw in her future but this is where is came back to for a fresh look at her life. Working at the flower is a comfortable job that she had done when she was a teenager.
When odd things start to happen Sierra knows she has to figure out what exactly is going on.
The cast of characters in the book fit together and it will be fun to read more books in the series.
Death in Bloom: A Flower House Mystery by Jess Dylan is a wonderful cozy mystery that is the first in a new series: A Flower House Mystery. I really enjoyed this fresh start to an exciting series, and I really am looking forward to future books after reading this gem.
I really liked this book. The inclusion of the flower shop, learning more about types of flowers, arrangements, and the author's talent in describing the flowers/plants really gave me a vivid visual and I feel really enhanced the story.
I enjoyed meeting Sierra Ravenswood, meeting the whole character cast, and I really am looking forward to learning more about everyone in the future books. There is plenty of material presented within this story to develop into future narratives.
I enjoyed the murder/mystery plot. It was creative and had several potential suspects, and kept me engaged throughout.
5/5 stars
A great cozy mystery with a promising future.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication.
Sierra Ravenswood finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery while trying to manage the Flower House floral shop when the owner takes off to go "geocaching". The only one she doesn't suspect of the murder of a town bully, is her new canine friend, Gus!
I enjoyed this first in a series cozy! Sierra is a relatable character who tries to be optimistic as things fall apart around her. The supporting characters - her friend Deena, the mysterious Calvin and Sierra's family add humor to the book. The "mystery within a mystery", the disappearance of Sierra's now ex- boss, will be fun to explore in the next book. I enjoy flower shop mysteries and this one didn't disappoint. The book has a few "red herrings" and I was surprised to learn "whodunit"!
I'm looking forward to another visit to Aerieville, Tennessee and the Flower House!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Plot: I really enjoyed this cozy! I guessed part of what the mystery was, but didn't figure out all of it, so that's nice. And I really liked that the mystery took place at a flower shop, because all the descriptions of flowers were fun! (And after reading, I want to try putting together a fresh flower bouquet!)
Characters: Sierra was a good main character! I liked the supporting characters. And I feel like there's going to be more mystery involving one character mentioned, but won't say more for fear of spoiling people...
The Cover: It's really cute! I like it a lot!
Overall: I think this was a really good start to a new cozy mystery series, and I know I will be reading the next book! Overall, I definitely recommend reading it!
I received an e-ARC of this book from the publisher.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of DEATH IN BLOOM (Book 1 of the Flower House Mysteries) by Jess Dylan in exchange for an honest review. Sierra Ravenswood has returned to her hometown of Aerieville, Tennessee after suffering personal and professional failure. Sierra, determined to focus on the positive and on setting new goals for the future, settled back into working at the Flower House, where had she worked as a teenager. Sierra’s first attempt to arrange a workshop wilts when one of the attendees is poisoned. At the same time, Sierra’s boss just leaves town on a mystery mission and sends instructions to sell the florist shop to Sierra for one dollar. Further, someone keeps breaking into the shop and breaking everything. Sierra must overcome the damage to her ego and restore her faith in herself because she has a shop to run, a vandal to stop, insurance companies to deal with, decision about her future to make, a new puppy to love, parents to placate, a new friend to support, a secretive tenant to spy upon, and a murder to solve.
I liked this book and thought it was a good start to a new series. I recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, florist shops, greenhouses, identity crisis, hometowns, overbearing parents, and a heroine with room to grow and heal.

Author Jess Dylan designs a lovely storyline centered around The Flower House business. This cozy mystery is set in rural Tennessee and features struggling music artist, Sierra Ravenswood, who works for Felix, the owner of the florist shop. When Felix up and disappears on a geocaching search, Sierra is left with all the shop responsibilities on her shoulders. A flower arranging class turns into a crime scene, and Felix doesn’t answer texts or calls from Sierra!
While I felt that the plot needed a stronger mystery; I enjoyed many of the characters and seeing their stories and personalities unfold between the pages. Sierra is a bit naive and timid at first, but grows stronger by the story’s end. Her family is supportive, and two unlikely friends, Deena and Calvin, turn out to be great help for her—odd as their mixed personalities may be. Once they put their amateur sleuth skills together, they began to figure out the bizarre happenings around them. Gus, the Corgi, is a precious pooch who loves Sierra.
My favorite character is Granny Mae who’s known for her home remedies, medicinal herbs, and kindness. I like that Sierra uses positive affirmations each day to strengthen her confidence. This debut story sets up some great characters that show lots of promise for future stories. As the mystery concludes, I realized I dismissed a clue early in in the story that pointed to the murderer so I was surprised by the reveal. I think readers will be pleased with the arrangement of this mild cozy debut. Happy Reading!
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press. All opinions are my own. Thank you.
What a great start to a new series! I love the setting, the relationship between all the characters, and the mystery! I can't wait for more of these characters!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Sierra returns home after living in Tennessee for a while. She gets a job at the florist. When an individual drops dead in the store, everyone in the shop including Sierra is considered a suspect. This book was well written.
Death in Bloom by Jess Dylan is the debut of a new cozy craft series, the Flower House Mystery. Sierra didn’t expect to return home to small-town Aerieville but after her relationship explodes and her singing career didn’t happen, here she is at 28. Working part-time as a florist, trying to figure things out, trying to stay positive..
Sierra’s excited when Felix, the owner, is on board with her idea of holding a flower arranging class. She’s less excited when he phones her to say he’s going to be out of town indefinitely and she’s in charge. Then it gets worse. Someone drops dead during her class. Then truly terrible - Abe Ranker didn’t just die, he was murdered so Sierra and the other attendees are suspects.
Now she has to figure out who did it, to prove her innocence and avoid becoming the next victim.
I read cozy mysteries because knowing what to expect is part of my enjoyment. Death in Bloom ticked a lot of the cozy mystery trope boxes for me.
It’s set in a charming small town with several locally owned businesses with owners ranging from friendly to Sierra to those who seem to be hiding things to the downright hostile.
Craft cozy mystery means getting flower arranging tips while enjoying the mystery.
There’s a slightly mysterious new guy living in the apartment above the Flower House who’s also a potential love interest.
There’s the potential bestie who’s willing to investigate and maybe even commit some B&E with Sierra.
The supportive if not always understanding family. Sierra’s dad is friends with Aerieville’s chief of police which is a mixed blessing for her.
Sierra’s Granny is a delight. Full of common sense, no-nonsense advice plus herb lore made her a fun character. I hope we see more of her in future books.
Plus there’s Gus the puppy! When Felix, Sierra’s boss leaves town, he also leaves an adorable and energetic pup behind so Sierra adopts him.
Death in Bloom is a fun, quick, gentle read with an endearing amateur sleuth full of positivity, a great cast of supporting characters plus a bonus puppy sidekick - the total package for a cozy debut. For fans of Kate Collins, Lynn Cahoon, and Daryl Wood Gerber.
