Squirrel is feeling a little neglected when her little sister arrives. Everyone wants to see the new baby. They bring presents and ignore Squirrel. But a wise Bear gives Squirrel a special present and makes her realize that the baby is just new and that newness will wear off. Then Squirrel becomes a big help to Momma and Momma is so proud of her big sister Squirrel.
This is the perfect book for older siblings when a new baby is expected. It will allow them to express their feeling of being left out and ignored even. But they will also realize all the things they can do to help with the new baby.
*sighs* Honestly, this book shows everything that is wrong in the mindset that a siblings MUST be jealous if they have a new sibling, I won't even finish this book as Squirrel's focus on being seen as prettier and sweeter than the baby sister is because of the views she was raised with and because her parents didn't show her the proper behavior during after telling her she would have a sister. *end of rant*
2 stars only because the pictures are cute.
I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This was such a sweet story. As a parent I can see how a new baby can disrupt a delicate family dynamic in positive ways but also in negative ways. In this story a squirrel is first excited about a new sibling being born then experiences sadness when the new baby is the focus of attention.
I appreciated how the book illustrates how the older sibling self-isolates and essentially suffers in silence. Kids may have various behaviors to change and sometimes they are harder to identify than others. In this case no one directly addresses the issue but do bring the youngster into the excitement by including her in ways that she can be helpful and recognizing her for her new role as big sister. The squirrel slowly changes her attitude and embraces her role. I would have appreciated a direct conversation addressing the potential changes however for the target audience I think the emotions created by the illustrations and the story are exactly on point.
I highly recommend this book to anyone expecting a new baby to help the older child adjust.
Thank you Netgalley and Clavis Publishing Inc. for a copy of "Squirrel is Going to Be a Big Sister" in exchange for my honest review. The graphics in this book are adorable, colourful and engaging for any child, especially those becoming an older brother or sister.
Squirrel is wondering if she will still be sweet when the new baby arrives or will the new baby be prettier? Grandma doesn't notice her when they come over and they brought a present but not for her.
Bunny tells her that she'll get used to having a sister. Badger comes over looking for the new baby. Squirrel starts to feel sad at having a sister and Fox finds her crying. She tells Fox that everyone has forgotten her. Owl explains that the baby is new and that is why everyone wants to meet her. Soon they will just be the baby and the big sister - equally pretty and sweet.
When Bear arrives Squirrel starts to cry again because she worries that her best friend will think that the baby is prettier and sweeter. Bear didn't forget about his friend and has brought her a gift. Soon Squirrel is proud to be a big sister. Grandma missed her while she was outside crying.
This book is for ages 4 and up, however younger children might enjoy the story as well because of the cute characters. It models to children that even though they have a sibling they are still important and it's nice when someone thinks to bring a small gift to the big sister/brother as well.
I liked this book. The illustrations are sweet, and I like that they use animals instead of people.
It’s full of very real feelings and situations that a bigger sister or brother might be going through when a new baby arrives. The older sibling phrases them all as questions that she asks to her mom or dad, which is helpful because it provides answers that parents may be looking for when reading with young kids. The older sibling also gets upset when her grandparents come over and bring a gift for the baby. She feels left out, and that is a super relatable situation for older siblings! The older sister feels better after talking to her friends, and being a helper with the baby’s things around the house. She even gets to open the baby’s presents! Again- good ideas built into the story for parents to use with their own children in this situation,
The only thing I don’t love about this book is that it’s focus is on the older sibling worrying that she’s no longer the prettiest and sweetest. These are typically traits associated with women and girls, and I wish the author would have chosen different traits to celebrate.
This is a cute one! It would definitely help young kids who are having anxiety about being an older brother or sister! Loved the illustrations and that the characters were squirrels!
There are big feelings of being a big brother or big sister. There is excitement but there is some hurt feelings as well. Sister squirrel is having those feelings. Your big sister will love getting to know sister squirrel as she deals with these feelings. How parents, grandparents and friends can help.
The illustrations are a sweet depiction of this big change in a young child's life.
A Special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This is a short book for children having or will be having a little sibling soon. I think the author missed the mark in giving a message for children about the comparison between siblings and how it shouldn't be that way. I wished this topic was incorporated well and more explicitly since that's some children thinks the way squirrel in this books thinks. this book has the potential for young children to learn that they are loved with or without new siblings to come and they shouldn't think that they are worthless just because they have a new family member. but sadly, it didn't reach out to that potential.
My daughter really liked this book. The story of getting a little sister and the big sister being upset is very real to children. This book helps the older kid see that they won’t be ignored once the new baby arrives. I thought the illustrations were well done and very colorful.
The illustrations were so beautiful. I really liked the idea of this book. It’s important for young children who are getting younger siblings to understand that they are still loved and are still special, but I thought this book could have done a better job of it. There was too much emphasis on being pretty and sweet, like that’s all that matters for girls. Girls are much more than just pretty and sweet and I would have loved this book to convey that.
Myself and my 4 year old son loved this book. It is beautifully illustrated and tells the story of Squirrel becoming a big sister and how she fears that she will be left out now the new baby has arrived. It is a simple story that explains perfectly the different emotions that Squirrel is going through.
Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for my ARC.
This is a lovely story. It would be perfect read to a child who is awaiting the arrival of a sibling because it will reassure them that they aren’t forgotten and are still loved and important. The illustrations and cover are perfect.
Not gonna lie, I teared up a little bit. I'm a big sister too, and although I can't remember too much about the time when my little brother was born, I do remember wanting to help my mom with everything. This picture book really shows the insecurities a child can have when a new little one joins the family. Even though the story is quite short, I can tell that Bear is a good friend! Would really recommend reading this with your little one if you have another one on the way!

Whole review once the book is published
This book would be such a wonderful gift for a child that is going to be a big sister. It would be great to use a bedtime story. This book is not just a picture book but a longer one to be read to a child. This pictures are the cutest by using animals as the characters. Such a cute story!!
This book is really cute and it's recommended to be read to kids that are going to have a younger sibling. Jealousy is normal to be felt by children who thinks that their younger siblings are taking away their parents. This book can help them in some way to cope up with the changes in their family because they have an addition to their family.
Cute story to read with a sibling who will soon become a big sister. A big fear can certainly be”Will I be forgotten by everyone once the baby arrives?”
I would enjoy reading this to preschool age children. So many relatable events occur throughout the story that can turn this into a wonderful learning adventure. Certainly opens up verbalization/language skills with important questions and answer dialogue.
The graphics are engaging and fun to look at even for me.
All in all, a heartwarming story I enjoyed reading.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
The illustrations in this book are extremely cute and very vibrant. Squirrel's facial expressions are really well done and the reader can really see how Squirrel is feeling. I think kids of all ages will really enjoy this cute and fun book.
Review: A helpful story for children welcoming a new baby to the household. Whimsical woodland characters create a relatable story about the emotions children might experience with a new baby in the house. Feelings about being forgotten or feel like they're no longer the focus of the parents attention are BIG feelings for young children. The colorful illustrations are relatable and fun. A great book for new BIG siblings.
Note: I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is my own.
Rating: 5/5 stars.
“Squirrel is Going to Be a Sister” is an adorable tale about a young squirrel whose baby sister has just been born. It is a very relatable story for those with younger siblings. The premise of the book is an important lesson for all children to know; just because you have a new sibling or friend, doesn’t automatically make you any less loved by your friends and family. Everyone is unique and special in their own right. I highly recommend this book for young children with siblings on the way to enjoy, with the help of an older reader or a parent.
