I love books that feature intelligent, strong, capable women. I also love historical fiction, especially when it focuses on a little-known piece of women's history. This title had excellent character development, engaging storyline, strong sense of place, and a satisfactory (if not perfect) ending. I truly enjoyed it and would recommend it to other readers with similar interests. This would make a good book club title, with the historical context, gender roles, interracial romance, and how religion impacts much of the characters choices and actions.
