I loved Fake it Till You Make It by Anne Harper so I had high hopes for Like a Boss. It did not disappoint! I love boss/employee books and this was well done. I will definitely be reading more by Anne.
Boss/employee romances are so fun to me. And honestly we need more of them. This was a fun story that had me enjoying the story. I really like the will they won't they. And Quinn was a pretty cool character. It did take me a while to warm up to Nel in the story. But she was okay by the end.
Like a Boss by Anne Harper is the second book in the Accidentally Viral Book romance series, and my first book by this author. Antonella, Nell, is having a terrible day, her boyfriend broke up with her and she can't get a table at a restaurant because they are only taking couples. After she throws a fit, a handsome man offers to share his table with her, and the evening ends with a kiss. The next week she finds out that her fit was recorded and has gone viral, and the man who shared his table is her new boss.
This book was funny, easy to read, and perfect for an escape from cold weather or the pandemic. I will be reading more books by this author, I highly recommend this book if you enjoy romances.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
After reading Anne Harper's FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT, I jumped at the chance of reading this book. I enjoyed everything about that book so my expectations were high when I started this one.
LIKE A BOSS started very well and kept me engaged through the first few chapters. Unfortunately, as the story progressed it kept losing steam. Both Quinn and Nell were interesting characters to get to know as individuals. Both had their issues and relationship hang-ups so I was looking forward to seeing them together--giving in into their attraction and everything THAT would entail. Sadly, between Quinn's hot and cold behavior and everything that was happening around them, their connection kind of went downhill for me. Their attraction was still obvious and their chemistry still shined through, but ultimately I wasn't invested in the romance or its outcome. I did enjoy the banter and the bickering between Nell and Quinn I just think that these two would have benefited of more time spend together and less time putting out fires around town.
Like A Boss is a romantic comedy between a radiant and energetic young woman and a man who prefers to sulk alone in his corner.
Our two main characters are very different and yet complementary. Their meeting is original, dynamic and full of humor, this scene sets the tone for the whole novel. Indeed, Nell takes Quinn on a series of wacky adventures rather funny and which gives a rhythm that chases boredom. Quinn growls but he happily follows his charming employee. She attracts him physically, she makes him laugh, she takes him out of his comfort zone, in short, she makes him come alive.
I really liked the fact that they were different, I loved seeing Quinn standing up for her and helping people who were foreign to him, seeing him open up to others, making friends despite his protests. I liked Nell and her heart of gold who takes the time to really get to know everyone around her, I liked her humor, the courage she shows against rumors and viral videos on the internet, her perseverance with Quinn.
On the other hand, I liked less the behavior of Quinn who plays hot and cold. I understood it at first but towards the end his changes of mind were boring. I felt sorry for Nell. As for Nell, she is a little too talkative and boisterous at times.
The author makes us believe that in small towns crazy situations are usual, it's a bit stereotypical and some scenes are exaggerated, as if humor was forced.
I would have liked to see Quinn's son a little more, since he is his priority.
Despite everything, this novel is very easy to read, it gives a smile, Nell's family and her friends are worth knowing, the epilogue is very good.
Like A Boss is not a 5 star read but the mix of romantic comedy and office romance works well.
"It's hard to be rigid when the person you love is so flexible [...] Just by being with them, you start to feel the hard edges that life has made on you start to become smoother."
This is a fun, quick, happily ever after read. It is #2 in the Accidentally Viral series but can be read as a standalone (although you will want to go back and meet the prior book’s couple and hear their story.)
Getting dumped on Valentine’s Day is rough. Needing food on a night popular for romantic dinners is rougher. Losing your you know what in a room full of people and having two teenagers post it so it could go viral is THE WORST. But kind of par for the course for Nell. Luckily a handsome stranger saves her night with good conversation during a nice dinner. An awkward kiss places that night right back on her “to forget” list. Luckily the viral post didn’t have that piece of the story!
When the handsome stranger, Quinn, shows up later as her new boss things get messy. They both are interested but office romances are prohibited. Add in that Nell and Quinn are now competing for the right to buy the office from the current owner and it just doesn’t work. But their attempts to stay away from each other are thwarted by some pretty funny local antics (the escape pig was probably my favorite).
I am thankful for the electronic copy of the book that I received from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
My first and definitely won’t be the last book that I read by Anne Harper! I was captivated from the first page to the last.
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Like a Boss by Anne Harper was a somewhat predictable romance between Nell and Quinn. I struggled to really get in to the book as I found it dragged on without a lot happening.
This book started interestingly great and very intriguing for me, however, I find the rest of the book to be very boring and sometimes cringe to read. There's a lot of telling instead of showing, and the characters did not grow on me. I feel like they could be more fleshed out and grow more, but that obviously did not happen as the book comes to an end. I loved the concept of this book, it's just that the execution could have been better.
Like A Boss by Anne Harper was published on 4/19 (whoops, I'm a bit behind!). This small-town romance finds Nell having sworn off-men after her Valentine's Day anti-romance rant has gone viral. Then suddenly, her new boss shows up, and he was the guy who was nice to her and gave her tingly feelings right after her rant, and then disappeared into the night (causing her to double down on the swearing off of men). Can they co-exist and avoid bringing further scandal onto their rental company? Or will their well intentioned plans to stay apart crash and burn?
I feel like I've accidentally stumbled upon so many small-town romances recently, and I'm not mad about it. I love when a community or town is a well-thought out character and addition to the story, and Arbor Bay definitely fit the bill in Like a Boss. These small-town romances also often offer close-knit and vivacious families and that was absolutely the case with the Bennett clan. I also really enjoyed the chemistry between Nell and Quinn and watching the hijinks they would get in to was really entertaining.
Even with all of those good things, I still really had trouble getting into this one. I think it was the "conflict" in the story of the rental company's owner wanting to avoid "scandal" and pitting Nell and Quinn against each other sort of unfairly. I 100% recognize that this is totally a me thing, and may not be at all off-putting to other readers, so definitely don't let my lack of attachment to this one deter you from picking it up!
Learning from @amandaofgreengables example, I'm not going to give this one a star rating, because I think other folks would really like it, and I blame the fact that it was read in a month where I had taken on WAY too many ARCs for my lack of enthusiasm.
This book contained mild to moderate steam instances.
Special thanks to Entangled Publishing and Netgalley for my review copy of this one.
ARC provided by Netgalley for an honest review.
I honestly am not sure what to say. To me, this was just yet another, average rom com. Nothing in the story stood out to me. The characters were just like any other boss/employee romance. The writing is not bad. I just feel as if I've read this story already.
This is a laugh out loud book! I love this book, and this author is one of my new favorites. This book had me laughing from start to finish. Not only is this book well written the storyline is fantastic. I would recommend this book to anyone,
I couldn't say I hated this book because I didn't hate it. Didn't love it either. It was true though that I wasn't rooting for the couple. I was hoping for Nell to realize her worth which she never did and chose someone who's worthy of her time. Whatever!🙄 Even the situations in this book seemed a bit forced. I stopped caring at some point and just wanted to get this over with.
This books meet up between the heroine, Nell, and the hero, Quinn reminds me of a comedy of errors. They meet after Nell is filmed on Valentines Day having a meltdown after a break up. Quinn invites her to eat with him and they have an enjoyable dinner. Than the next day Nell goes to work and meets her new boss Quinn.
It’s a book that has witty and fun dialogue between the main and side characters. The love story is fun and you can’t help but follow along on their sometimes reluctant journey to love. This book leaves you feeling happy and I truly enjoyed th earl of Nell and Quinn’s story. I am reading Anne Harper for th first time and will definitely get more of her books.
This book was great.
It was a slow burn but it was worth the read.
I like even if Nell and Quinn had to fight for a job that was only for one person they worked together.
I also love how Quinn doesn't use technology much. It brought some flavor to the book. It was wonderful.
I love Nell's humor and knowing what she doing and so much more. I also love the side characters.
There is so much to love about this book.
READ THIS BOOK.
I like this book and more to come from this series.
Rating: 5/5
Quinn and Nell are so absolutely sweet in this lovely book written by Anne Harper.
I enjoyed this book so much- there is witty repartee while still feeling incredibly warm. The main characters have so much depth and the secondary characters are extremely well rounded as well!
I would absolutely recommend this book for a fun, light hearted romance book with a lot of heart. Thank you to Anne Harper, Netgalley, and Entangled Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
While this was a cute story of Nell and Quinn meeting on Valentine's Day as singles and sharing a kiss, later to find out Quinn is Nell's new boss, it was a lack luster story. Very cliche and nothing we haven't read before.
Quinn is very standoffish while Nell is a burst of light. They become friends leading to a romance. Again, a cute story but nothing I haven't read.
I love Anne Harper as a writer but this one needs a little something more.
Cute and forgettable, that's what I'd call this. It's a low angst, easy-going, small town romance with a touch of the forbidden, and there were plenty of moments that I enjoyed. I loved the adorable meet cute, and the humor made this a lighthearted, easy read. I also liked the opposites attract vibe, and the combination of these two very different characters had a ton of potential. But, ultimately, it ended up being just that... potential. The romance falls flat after too much push/pull from our hero, and it ended up being pretty unsatisfying. Honestly, there was just something missing from the whole book. I can't pinpoint any one moment that was a major issue for me, but I also can't pinpoint any one moment that was particularly great either.
The story follows Nell and Quinn, two strangers who meet on Valentine's Day. After a disastrous breakup has left Nell alone and brokenhearted on Valentine's Day, Quinn finds himself offering to split an item from the couples menu at the restaurant they're both at - which is completely out of character for him. They spend one fun evening together, chatting over dinner and even sharing a steamy kiss, but Quinn flees at the end of the night. He's a newly single dad who is determined to get his life back together, and that means he needs to focus on his new job. Unfortunately, that new job involves him being Nell's boss, and their kiss isn't easy to forget.
On paper, this sounds like just my kind of romance: it's light, low angst, playful, and the office romance/opposites attract storyline are right up my alley. It's the writing itself that holds this back, which doesn't do the storyline any favors. We needed more from Quinn to make this shine, maybe some enthusiasm about the relationship, and a few less instances of him running scared. The most difficult reviews to write are for books that you know you'll forget in a few days, and that's absolutely where I'm at with this. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't really say that I liked it either. I received an early copy, and am voluntarily leaving a review of this small town office romance.
Enjoyable workplace romance with a grumpy boss (which I like!). The first book in this series was a favorite so I had very high expectations from this second one. Maybe my expectations were a bit too high and second books always have the first to contend with.
Overall I enjoyed the story and the characters and had a good read. Do think my mood played a part in the rating... I do recommend!
Like a Boss is a charming contemporary romance set in Alabama. The story follows Antonella (Nell) Bennett post-break up and filled with a little bit of rage. Rage she inadvertently aims toward a restaurant host before being rescued by Quinn Hannigan, a handsome stranger. The best part of the night for Nell is the time spent with Quinn in their short time together. The worst part is she then discovers her rant has gone viral. Now, she can't go anywhere in her small town of Arbor Bay without the stares, whispers, or inappropriate come-ons. Her life is about to take another turn when a familiar face shows up at her place of employment as her new boss.
Like a Boss is a fun book about chance meetings, unexpected attraction, and denial. Nell's character has a sunny personality (when she's not ranting as unsuspecting restaurant hosts) that carries over to all aspects of her life, even after her tirade goes viral. She's definitely a glass-half-full kind of gal. Quinn, on the other hand, is a tad grumpy and pessimistic. He may have helped a random woman at a restaurant, but he wasn't looking for romance. He is very much a stickler for not dating co-workers even when all the laws of attraction are in place.
Quinn was not the best hero I've read. He was way too wishy-washy, and his signals were so mixed. There were so many scenes I cringed at because of his actions and how they affected Nell. Once he pulled his head out of you-know-where, he was great, but it took too long to get there. Nell was a great heroine with a high level of patience, whether pertaining to her job or her relationships. I could see myself being her friend. She has a large, loving family that stands behind her and fully supports and defends her. Nell and Quinn were cute together and I wished Quinn wouldn't have been so rigid.
I still really enjoyed Like a Boss, the characters, and the impending romance. The shenanigans Nell drags Quinn into allow us to see a very different side of him. He also gets to see what small town life can be like. I come from a small town just outside of Flint, Michigan and I can tell you that everyone knows everything and sometimes you have to get creative to solve problems. I enjoyed the town of Arbor Bay and hope we get to see more Accidentally Viral books.
I was provided a copy of this book to read.
