Aviana is struggling with life. She has no passion, is mediocre whilst her step family are all so successful. However, everything changes when she discovers that she is a fairy godmother.
At the same time she is also noticed by her crush and romance begins to blossom. Unfortunately fairy godmothers are not supposed to have their own ‘happy ever after’.
It was a slow start but once Aviana went to visit her mothers the story picks up and it becomes difficult to put down. It also took me a while to warm up to the protagonist but again, once she went to visit her mum her warm and loving personality shone through and I was rooting for her.
This a coming of age story with a bit of everything in the mix - fantasy, romance, nemesis, trials...
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the eARC
Very cute fairy godmother tale. As first I was not sure about the story but as it continued it became a feel good tale. It has elements of Cinderella with the wicked stepmother and stepsisters, the befuddled father and prince charming. Aviana is unaware that she is a fairy godmother until her 21st birthday when her wings appear. She has been raised by her father and not told anything about what might happen to her. This is due to her father not wanting to admit that it could happen and it has left her totally unprepared. If not for coming to see her mother, she out not have had any help and would have thought she was crazy. She is accepted into the fairy community and helped along the way by Ruby and Juniper. This is a good book for anyone wanting a lighthearted read.
This was...fine? Cute? A few too many pop culture references and the plot was sort of shallow. I liked it conceptually, but it didn't impact me either way enough to share any meaningful thoughts about.
I Put a Spell on You is a cute twist on the Cinderella story. There are still stepsisters, but what if the Cinderella-type character was the fairy godmother? Now, add in an additional twist where the fairy godmother’s first assignment is to create a happy ending for her stepsister with Prince Charming? It is a quirky take on the tale that was an entertaining and light-hearted read. Each chapter takes you through the 27 “rules” that all fairy godmothers must follow as the reader journeys along with our main character.
Aviana Willowbrook has a very unfortunate 21-st birthday. There are many events that do not go her way and she is left disappointed by the whole day. The only upside seems to be that she is transforming into a fairy godmother, complete with her own set of fairy wings. It is a complete shock to her at first, but over time she gets to learn what life as a fairy godmother really is like. Her main struggle is that one of the rules as a fairy godmother is that they create happily ever afters for others, but they do not get them for themselves. This is difficult for Aviana to accept as she dreams of a HEA with her own prince charming, real estate developer, Nash Nolan.
Aviana’s life before her transformation was a lonely one as she felt out of place when it came to her father, her step-mother, and her two step-sisters. Aviana works for the law firm belonging to her stepfamily as an assistant/paralegal. She comes from a lot of money on her father’s side and starts off as a slightly spoiled woman. Over time, she grows a lot and shows the more giving side of herself. She is very naïve at times and it was difficult to understand why she did not hash things out with her family years ago as some of the problems presented did not seem to be new ones. Instead, Aviana went along with everything and there are times where the step family seemed one way, but then would change to be another. The character dynamics were difficult to keep up with as I did not experience the growth between them as much as I would have preferred.
When Aviana visits her estranged mother, she discovers a whole new world of being a fairy godmother as her mother is a fairly famous one in the community. She has a chance encounter with Nash after wishing for him to be with her on her birthday and the two of them start to date, but it cannot last as fairy godmothers cannot reveal themselves to others. It was difficult to fully understand if it is solely magic that brought Nash around to noticing Aviana or if there was a backstory between them and he had some potential feelings for her before. He and Aviana were cute together and it was adorable reading about the two of them.
Aviana is a fun character that you want to root for as she tries her best to be a great fairy godmother. She has a lot of personal growth as she discovers her true self. She also gets to become closer to her mother and learn about her family, as well as, more information about the strain between her parents. In addition, Aviana is not only dealing with her new transformation, but there is a potential villain to defeat as something is not quite right in the fairy godmother world. For me, this story would have been fun to feature in a sequel novel as it felt like too much to compact in this novel. I would have taken this storyline out of this novel and focused more on just Aviana’s transformation and her love life dilemma. It is just my preference as I did enjoy both of these storylines separately.
Overall, this is a fun and light-hearted book that I actually read in a single sitting. It is a fun insight into the world of fairy godmothers and the rules that they have to follow. This novel has a ton of potential and would make a great series where the details can be further developed and explored in more depth. Aviana’s character grows a lot and the friendships are a really nice addition to the story. It is a very light-hearted and entertaining read that is great for those that want to read a story featuring the fairy godmother getting a happy ending. [3.5 rounded to 4]
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Inkspell Publishing for this entertaining novel. The opinions expressed are completely my own.**
A cute and breezy Cinderella retelling. A fun, light hearted read though slow and unevenly paced in portions. Overall it was a good time but not a memorable one.
I Put a Spell on You failed to click with me, which was sad because I love the premise! Unfortunately, I had trouble connecting with the characters. Aviana in particular. At times, it felt like she had two personalities and kept going back and forth between the two. She also didn't speak the way I would expect a 21-year-old (right?) in recent times to speak. For example, I'm 25 and have never said "For reals?" unironically, so for Aviana to say it so often felt...forced.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book!
I absolutely loved this book! The pacing, the characters, the slow-burn romance, the massive twists, all were so extremely well done. I was so impressed with this book that I stayed up all night to read it!! Highly recommend and I’ll be looking to read other books by this author.
I Put a Spell On You was a quick and light-hearted read. It was cute twist on the classic Cinderella story. In this one, the fairy godmother falls in love with Prince Charming. The problem is she's supposed to make love stories happen but not have one of her own. Unfortunately, her heart didn't get the message.
Our main character, Aviana is the neglected daughter with two step sisters. She's also a newly "winged" fairy godmother. It's all a shock as her mother and father hadn't prepared her that this could happen. Now she's left trying to understand her new reality and find her way in it. Aviana is also recently being pursued by her long-time crush, Nash. If only she can figure out how to "have it all" without breaking any fairy godmother rules.
"Fairy tales really do come true. You just have to believe."

Big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book! This did not affect my review.
"A fairy godmother embraces knowing 'happily ever after' is her purpose, not her future.". That is the motto Aviana has to live by, after suddenly turning into a fairy godmother on her 21st birthday. But how can she give up her own happily ever after, when her crush finally starts giving her attention?
Even though I enjoyed this book a lot and struggled with putting it down, it had quite a few inconsistencies. All the characters did a huge 180 with their personalities at about 2/3d of the book, some turning good and others turning out to be bad. I would have liked to see some more growth in that.
I was rooting for Aviana and Nash to be together and I don't even know why, as there didn't seem to be any chemistry between them. There was only one scene of the two of them where I was thinking YES FINALLY, but that's it. 😭😭
I Put a Spell on You is a cute and quirky easy read. It's not the best book in the world, but I've definitely seen worse. And it was good enough for me to struggle with putting it down, which is definitely saying something!
A different genre than the usual romance and totally hooked from the opening page. The cover really drew me in and made me intrigued
received this book and an ARC from Net Galley. This is a feel good story about a woman who, on her 21st birthday, discovers she is a fairy godmother. While working to earn her title, she must overcome obstacles from her family and other fairy godmothers. This was a feel good, quick read with humor in the writing.
Fun read for sure. Clever, an easy way to pass the day. I’d recommend to anyone who wants an authentic, entertaining book to read for any occasion.
I have a love/hate relationship with this book. In the beginning, I felt the author was trying too hard to sound young and failing badly at it. Once she stopped Aviana while a bit whiney became more believable. I really enjoyed the whole discovery of being a fairy god-mother and the family dynamic was intriguing. I wish the author spent more time on this detail and had the step-mother get her comeuppance, but instead, she focused on a rotten romance angle. Nash is underdeveloped and in fact, is not worthy of Aviana because of how he treats her. It's not acceptable and to make it even worse the romance felt forced anyway.
This book had so much potential but its downside far outweighs the good.
I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Rating- 3.5/5
It was such a fun read. I loved all the characters but the only thing that annoyed me was that there were a few inconsistencies between the behaviour of different characters. especially Nash Nolan, Vanessa and the mc's Dad. And this thing bugged me a lot even after hours of having read the book.
It was as I said a fun-filled book with friendships and romance and of course- happily ever after.
As for characters, I think Glen is my favourite and the close second is her mom.
I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I think this story has such a unique and fun concept. Aviana turns into a fairy godmother on her 21st birthday, and she falls for Prince Charming while growing into her purpose in life after feeling like she never knew where she belonged.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved Aviana's personal growth along with the growth of her relationship between both her father and her mother. I thought the whole cast of supporting characters were interesting and fun. Even though Nash is a pretty generic hero, I still enjoyed the budding of that relationship as well. It was a quirky story full of laughs, and it was super light and enjoyable.
Definitely recommend this one!

I read my first Sarah Vance-Tompkins story a while ago, when I won an anthology she contributed to, but didn’t keep up with her work much after that. But I was charmed by the premise of I Put a Spell on You, which aims to flip the traditional “Cinderella story” setup on its head, in particular questioning why the fairy godmother can’t also be a viable romantic interest.
And in that regard, it’s utterly charming. I loved that Aviana doesn’t have an awareness of all the rules, or even her own identity, right away, which gives her some skepticism when it’s all presented to her. She grows a lot over the course of the story, from a spoiled brat to a truly compassionate person.
I did like that the story deviated from the traditional Cinderella story tropes by making the relationships Aviana has with her stepfamily much less contentious. In particular, I liked that there’s a turn of events that indicates that her stepsister isn’t interested in Nash, in spite of the fact that Aviana’s job is to set them up.
As a love interest, Nash was fairly one-note, being the rich surrogate “prince” figure who wants more out of life. But ultimately he and Aviana are cute together.
This book is cute and sweet, and while it’s not super deep, I think a lot of people will like it, especially if they’re looking for a fun, lighthearted new spin on old fairy tales.
Where to start. Yesterday I was having an all around bad day and decided to pick up my copy of “I Put a Spell On You” by Sarah Vance-Tompkins that I received via NetGalley and the publishers. Truth be told I was annoyed with the story at first. We open with a whiny, entitled 21 year old lady. I read about a third of the book and decided that maybe I just wasn’t in the right headspace for a fairy tale, so I put the book down and decided to revisit it again when I was feeling better.
I’m glad that I know myself well enough to pick the story back up this morning. I quickly devoured the story, entranced by the words and tale of Aviana Willowbrook. We learn that yes Aviana is a spoiled rich kid, but she has an evil step mother, an absent father, and apparently a mother who abandoned her. This isn’t the case though, while yes her step-mother is evil, her dad was scared and her mom never forgot or stopped wanting her. This is a true coming of age story with a dash of magic mixed in.
If you’re wanting to get caught up in a cute, light, fairy tale then please pick up this book.
An adorably cute, light, and fun read. It was just what I needed on a rainy day and it left me feeling happy and smiling! I love fairy godmothers ^_^
I loved this book so much! It was the first book I have read by this author and I can't wait to read more! The characters and their story stick with you long after you finish the book.
I Put a Spell On You is a cute and quirky book telling the story of the fairy godmother. Waking up on her 21st birthday, Aviana begins realizing that she's transforming into a fairy godmother. When her dad and step-family abandon her on her birthday, she decides to go visit her absent mother, who she realizes is a fairy godmother. Torn between wanting to go back to her normal life and her desire to help others achieve her HEA, Aviana struggles with navigating her new life as a fairy godmother. Not to mention, fairy godmothers can't get their own HEA--meaning she needs to ignore her growing feelings for her long-time crush, Nash Nolan.
While the book was a really fun and light read, the plot was too trope-y to be considered a 'quality book'. Normally, I love reading these types of books of fairy-tale retellings or bringing them into real life. This book definitely tried to emulate Fairy Godmothers, Inc., but while Saranna DeWylde was able to pull of a loveable trio of fair godmothers you were always rooting for, I found the characters in this book to be reallyyyy unlikeable and the entire plot to be superrrr predictable.
Aviana seems very bipolar, constantly switching between lashing out to feeling all nurturing and love-y. She also seems to be written as super reckless, doing r e a l l y dumb things for the sole purpose of pushing the plot forward. She flip flops from being a petulant and angsty child, constantly whining about her fate, to being all rainbows and sunshine trying to bestow HEAs to the people around her. But half of her actions (and 100% of the ones with Nash) seem so illogical and crazy, I just can't imagine anybody doing the very absurd things she does. Also Nash just rubs me the wrong way, Aviana places him on a pedestal since page one of the book, and the only 'humanizing' moments for him show how douche-y he is. Just because mans grew up nerdy and bullied does not make him all sensitive hunk, the author needs to SHOW and not tell this 🙄🙄.
Also, 2/3s of the way into the book, the characters all started having major personality changes, and everything they were doing seemed VERY OOC. I refuse to believe that after spending a whole lifetime being oppressive and rude, or indifferent and caustic someone can suddenly change and be doting and understanding with really no catalysts or transitions.
Although this book was a fun attempt to implement the fanciful fairy godmother concept, I think it fell a bit short of its potential. This book was definitely setting up for a sequel, and hopefully in the next book the story can be more fully fleshed out.
