Thanks NetGalley, Simon & Schuster Canada and T. J. Newman fort his awesome book! As soon as I started reading it, I loved it from the start. This book started with a bang and ended with an even bigger bang. I was shocked with the twists and turns that happened at the end of almost every chapter, T.J know how to write a book. So many times, I wondered how this was going to go. Many chapters I had to stop and just stare at the page and say really? I can not give one detail as this book will be spoiled if I say one thing about the book. It was just so good. All I can say, you need to know your people and to know they have your back.
“People are only as good as the world lets them be.”
FALLING - T.J. NEWMAN
Let me be honest. I don’t think I would have chosen this book off of a shelf. Until I read the description:
‘You just boarded a flight to New York.
There are one hundred and forty-three other passengers on board.
What you don’t know is that thirty minutes before the flight your pilot’s family was kidnapped.
For his family to live, everyone on your plane must die.
The only way the family will survive is if the pilot follows his orders and crashes the plane.
Enjoy the flight.’
... it really gave me no other choice.
This book played out like an action movie in my head. Every chapter, every sentence, every word had me hanging on the edge of my seat. Even as I write this, my heart still races thinking about it. The fact that the author is a flight attendant just adds to the authenticity - you notice it in the details, the characters, the suspense. It was an absolutely fantastic ride.
**Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for the eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
What a thrilling book to read! I could not put it down. It is a fast paced, sit on the edge of your seat and hold your breath kind of a read.... the best. I highly recommend this book and can hardly wait for T.J. Newman’s second novel.!!!
A propulsive, fast paced thriller. A well-crafted first novel, worthy of a read. TJ Newman has constructed an exciting suspense novel, cinematic in scope that leaves one wanting more.
This is an action packed, edge of your seat thriller that will have you forgetting to breath. I not only loved the storyline but also the characters. Bill and Jo are extremely likeable and Carrie comes across as level headed and brave.
I love that the action starts in the first chapter and doesn’t let up. The flight crew are magnificent and the passengers are what I would expect in real life. The book is believable and relevant to the world that we live in.
Having action on land and in the air just adds to the excitement. This is all round an excellent thriller that you won’t want to put down. I highly recommend it.
Thank to you Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC.
Falling is one of those fast paced thriller novels that sucks you in and takes you along for the ride, while not really offering anything new or innovative to the genre, and that's ok. I definitely enjoyed this for what it was. It allowed me to get out of my head while I was reading it and just enjoy the tension and thrills as they came, which was all I really needed.
The characters in this story were incredibly well fleshed out and believable, and the author definitely does a good job of making you care for these people and wanting the best possible outcome for everyone involved. The stakes/consequences could have been a little higher in the fact that every character makes it out generally unscathed and alive, but this is just a preference I like to see in these types of stories to lend a little more believability and credibility to the story.
The political motivations behind the kidnappers actions was a little heavy handed, and at this point a little over played. Give me some new reasons as to why your villains want to incite terror into the world, and step away from things that have been done so many times before. If the author had been a little more innovative that way, this book could easily have been elevated above most others in the genre.
Despite this flaw this will definitely be a popular "blockbuster, summer beach read" novel that I wouldn't be surprised to see adapted into a movie before too long. And if this is your type of read I definitely recommend checking it out.
I just reviewed Falling by T. J. Newman. #NetGalley
[NetGalley What a thrilling ride. From the start to finish this one keeps you on the edge of your first class seat. I could not put it down.
Bill Hoffman woke up like any other day and was heading to work but today would definitely not turn out like any other day. Bill, an airline pilot, was asked to do a favour for his boss and pick up an extra shift, he wasn’t happy about it but couldn’t refuse.
Just after takeoff, he receives a call from his wife but it’s actually a man named Sam who has taken his family hostage. Sam tells Bill that he is to crash the plane otherwise his family dies.
With an impossible choice In front of him Bill starts to devise a plan to save everyone. Will he do it is anyone’s guess.
This was the debut novel by the author and as soon as I read the synopsis I knew I had to read this one. The book did not disappoint at all. From the very beginning you are instantly hooked and start asking yourself what would you do in a similar situation. We also don’t often think of pilots as hero’s like as do police or firefighters but pilots have an extraordinary responsibility to the passengers on their planes. I thought the book did a wonderful job of highlighting the training, bravery and duty of pilots. The book does take some liberties with the plot at times but this didn’t bother me at all. I would definitely love to see this turned into a movie one day and would recommend you read it.
Thanks to @simonandshuscterca for the advanced copy.
Wow, what a ride! T. J. Newman had me on the edge of my seat, throughout the entire book. I honestly could not read this before a stressful work-day, because my heart would be pounding as I turned the pages! The story is written so well, with the author’s real-life knowledge and experiences adding to the realistic details. As a side note, I truly think Big Daddy and I could be best friends and I would definitely answer the phone should he ever call. I absolutely loved this book and will definitely be reading it again.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for this gripping, thrilling book in return for an honest review. The threats and actions were relentless, with suspense and tension throughout. This was an extraordinary debut thriller that kept me riveted to the seat while dreading its outcome.
All aboard the plane for an almost 6-hour flight from LA to NYC. There are 149 passengers and crew aboard who are not expecting the terror that will face them. The pilot, Bill, is faced with a dilemma that seems insurmountable. He must choose between crashing the plane with everyone onboard into an unknown target or the death of his wife and children. They are being held captive by a terrorist. This man is wearing an explosive suicide vest, and Bill's wife has been forced to wear one also. The situation on board the plane is grim. There is an unknown partner of the terrorist on the plane with a gun, and canisters of deadly poison gas are to be used to incapacitate the passengers and crew. How will Bill decide? Will he choose his family or the plane? He must use all his skills and training to do the impossible. He is determined to save his family without crashing the plane.
On the ground is an FBI agent, Theo, who is barely holding on to his position. He has a history of acting impulsively. He has a lot on his mind. His aunt is a senior flight attendant on the plane. How far will he go to disobey orders to locate Bill's family and save them from the terrorist? Readers will remember this exciting debut thriller when regular air travel becomes possible again but also recall the brave and resourceful pilot and his flight crew. We learn the terrorists' motives and almost sympathize with them as individuals despite their evil plans. They feel the history of their horrible plight was ignored by the West, the government, its people, and the press.
I would have liked to have read what was going through some of the passengers' minds, but this might have detracted from this compelling read's main players. Recommended as an exciting summer thriller. I hope the author has more stories in mind for future suspense novels.
