Thank you to NetGalley and Avid Reader Press / Simon Schuster for this ARC. I was excited to read the blurb about this book and really happy to be chosen to receive a copy. Wow, I love thrillers of any kind and this definitely caught my eye. Well...I downloaded it on Monday morning and started to read it. I could not put it down and took any few minutes I had free to continue reading it, I could not put it down. I was done, sadly buy Tuesday. It is a tremendous read and I recommend it, unless you have something important to do, like maybe your job! I also recommend you not read this at the airport while waiting to board your plane, you may choose not to!
DNF at 8%. While the synopsis is intriguing as all get-out, T.J. Newman's writing vacillates between ultra-generic and supremely overwrought. Just how generic? Her book about a disaster on a plane begins with a -- wait for it! - prologue dream sequence about a disaster on an airplane, no doubt to foreshadow the imminent disaster. This is the kind of shit that makes me check out right from the very beginning, and, unfortunately, the few extra pages I gave it to try and rekindle my interest proved to be a fruitless slog.
I've got too many other books to read to spend any more time on this one. I'll wait for the eventual movie that I'm sure some Hollywood studio will be falling over itself to fast-track.
Hold onto your hat because this is an edge-of-your seat, unputdownable thrill ride of a book! The tension builds so quickly that my heart was in my throat the entire book. There are no stops and no pauses - just terror and anxiety throughout. Captain Bill Hoffman, airline pilot goes to work. Once in the air he finds out his wife and two children have been taken hostage. Bill is given a choice by the terrorist: Crash the plane with over 140 people on board, or save his family. This is an unimaginable situation! I was glued to the book all the way to the end. A stunning debut T. J. Newman!
Thanks to Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster through Netgalley for an advance copy.

Falling
T. J. Newman
Out July 6, 2021
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If this doesn’t get turned into a Liam Neeson movie (and a good one, at that) something is just not right with the world.
Falling is the debut novel by Newman, but you would not know it from reading it. This is a polished, action-packed, non-stop thriller that kept me hooked from page one. This was not the type of book that slowly picks up the pace until it is finally in high gear- this book starts strong and does not let up until the end. I read this last week on vacation in Galveston, and I am so glad I did because it was such a great vacation read.
Falling is the story of a seasoned pilot named Bill, as he is given an impossible choice: a terrorist holds his family captive and covered in explosives, and the only way to save them is to intentionally crash the airplane full of innocent passengers into an undisclosed target. Bill faces impossible odds as he must determine who he can trust and how on earth he is going to protect all of the souls that are left in his hands.
I really don’t have any negatives when it comes to this book. It was thrilling, surprisingly moving, well-realized, and extremely well paced. Newman does a fantastic job of utilizing her knowledge from being a flight attendant in the past to add an authentic feel to the novel, which I appreciated. This thriller was unpredictable when it needed to be, but pleasantly familiar at the same time.
Honestly, I think this book was a rollercoaster of a read full of great characters and tons of fun. You are not going to want to miss this fantastic summer read!
Thank you to Netgalley, T. J. Newman, and Avid Reader Press for an early copy of this book. I can’t wait to pick up whatever Newman writes next!!

“You will crash your plane or I will kill your family…”
Captain Bill Hoffman has a sense of duty, so when his boss asks him to take on an additional flight, he readily agrees. Though he had promised to spend time with his family and attend his son’s baseball game, Captain Hoffman makes a choice to put the responsibilities of his job ahead of those promises. If only he knew by accepting to pilot Flight 416 from LAX to JFK, he would be making the ultimate choice…sacrifice the lives of his family or those aboard the plane…
Oh, Dear Reader, this story is a nail biter for sure! From the opening till the end, Falling will keep your heart racing, the pages turning and you guessing…who will the pilot save? What would you do if given the same scenario? “Most people just exist and roam around. It’s a choice to actually live…”
Highly recommend and triple dog dare ya to read on your next flight!
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
Falling is an adreline rush of a novel! What starts as picking up an extra flight for Bill ends up as a choice between the lives of his family or the lives of everyone on his plane. With lots of twists and turns along the way, it was impossible to put this book down for long. How would Bill make a choice between his wife and young children? Would Jo, the flight attendant be able to keep the crowd calm and get a message to the FBI? So much at play! I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a fast read with lots of action.
Given the impossible choice of protecting your family or the 149 souls aboard the aircraft you have been entrusted to fly which would you choose? That is the exact predicament that Pilot Bill Hoffman is placed in after he takes off on flight 416 in T.J. Newman’s novel Falling.
The twisty, realistic and suspenseful novel is told through the perspectives of Bill, his wife Carrie, the flight attendants and the terrorists. The high action plot kept my on the edge of my seat until the ending. I wish the ending had been as good as the first half of the book but it still was a solid five star book.
Thank you Netgalley and Avid Reader Press for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow, this is one book on steroids. Rarely do you get to read a book that starts with a high adrenalin rush and never lets you go. Yes, the other reviewers are correct, this is stunning and relentless with nonstop action. First book I’ve read by T.J. Newman but will definitely not be my last.
Well done, great diversion from my normal genre. I found it all believable, characters were well developed. There was only one con, it was toward the ending and had to do with a press conference. Not sure they would allow her to speak so freely.. Otherwise, I truly enjoyed this read.
I want to thank Avid Reader Press along with NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read an ARC. Comes in with high 5 stars.
After a pilot is in the air, he finds out his family has been kidnapped. He is told he must crash the plane or his family will be killed. An interesting look at the motives of terrorists and American attitudes toward the rest of the world. Very intense.
This book sent chills up my spine. Most of us have had scary experiences on a flight (which were usually nothing but turbulence) but this story ratcheted up the fear factor by 100! When the pilot on a five-hour flight receives information on his computer that he has two choices, crash the plane or let his wife and children be killed, his first reaction is NO, I will not agree to either of those choices., But when he sees photos of his wife and two children, a 10-year-old son and a 10-month old daughter, being held hostage by a man with a gun, he realizes the spot he is in. True terror on every page, and so believable. The author did a fantastic job of bringing us this story, and worked on an airline for 10 years, so the authenticity shows. Great debut novel, thanks to #NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my copy. I could not put it down!
I finished this about 3:00 am, not a good time to write a review.
Later...
A hot bullet of a story. A strong family presented with an unthinkable scenario. Every plot twist adds a layer of suspense. Even the villains are somewhat sympathetic characters. This would be a great summer vacation book.
Wow!! This is one story that leaves you the edge of your seat. It’s intense and has you swiping so fast needing to know wha is happening. I’m glad I picked this one up to read because it took me for a ride. Add this one to your list. It is worth the read.
Falling is a tense and terrifying thriller about an impossible choice. Bill Hoffman, a pilot, is captain of a flight from LA to NY. He receives a message from his wife's phone that his family has been kidnapped, and Bill must crash the plane or his family will die. Bill is determined not to choose, but to both try and save his family and all the passengers.
The writing keeps the tension high. Interspersed with present day are memories of the various characters and things that were important times in their lives.
I was engaged from the very first page. I enjoyed this novel, and look forward to reading more from this author.
I received an ARC from NetGalley, all opinions are given freely.

This one started out a little slow for me (and it might have just been because I knew sort of what was going on from the summary), but it did pick up and towards the end, I wasn't able to put it down! I needed to know the ending. I thought the twists were done very well and it felt like I was watching an action movie at times (what else could go wrong?). I was expecting a more believable story, but this one was still really good and anyone who likes action would enjoy it. Some of the parts were a little too convenient, however it didn't take away from the story. The technical flight aspects were an added bonus and really helped to bring the story together. I can't wait to see what this author does next (and I would definitely watch the movie)!
I don’t think I can do this book justice with my review. I can’t think of enough words to compliment it. To truly embody the emotions it brought out of me. I laughed I cried I cringed I almost had a heart attack. The intensity it held made me put the book down to take a breathe before picking it right back up and falling deep into the story. The realization that this felt so real. That this could be a true story is part of what makes this thrill. The author did an absolute astonishing job with putting you, the reader, in the story. Making you feel the fears of passengers, the heartbreak decisions. Absolutely superb writing which is honestly an understatement.
The story. The blurb given is all you need to read this book. Bill is a pilot and he is given the choice: crash the plane and kill everyone on it or his wife, baby daughter, and young son will die.
I MEAN MY GOSH! This is a must read if you want your heart pumping your eyes leaking and are ready for a good freaking read.
Thank you netgalley for the arc!!!
Falling by T. J. Newman is one unbelievable rendering of suspense from the first page to the last. I could not put it down. If you have ever flown in an aircraft, you will know the absolute fear and desperation of these passengers and crew. Please read this one.
A great thriller - perfect for a 4-5 hour flight...if you dare!
Airline Captain Bill Hoffman’s family has been kidnapped - he is alerted when the plane is in the air. The kidnappers communicate with him secretly as he flies the plane and they give him a choice of crashing the plane to save his family OR saving the 149 souls onboard.
Fast paced, and well planned as you are introduced to more and more interesting characters on the flight. As someone who travels quite a bit I tried to imagine how I would fit into this quandary.
I didn't necessarily buy the reasoning behind the kidnappers but that does not distract too much from the story. No matter what their reasoning, the captain and others needed to act!
Congratulations to this author. She reveals in the notes that she received 41 rejections before finally finding a publisher. She is a flight attendant and that allows for much more realistic scenarios in the air.
Recommend!
This was a fast, tense read. It made me think about what I would do in that situation and I'm glad the pilot was more resourceful than me!
Finished this book in two days! I didn’t want to put it down.
Grabbed me from the first page. And didn’t let go until the last.
Outstanding!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an earc of this book.
Fast moving thriller that is hard to put down. Realistic stemming from the author's experience as a flight attendant. Like some new authors, she is overly verbose and gets carried away with flowery descriptions. Too many words. But still a great read.
