This is a difficult book to place into a specific catagory. Is it a romance story and the answer has to be yes. Is it a war story and the answer is yes as that is the premise for the story. Is it a crime novel and the answer is yes as that is how the heroine and hero initially meet. Is it an action adventure story and the answer has to be yes in the finale. I enjoy all of the above and was not disappointed in any of the genres I have mentioned. My attention was grabbed in the first chapter and never waivered.

I consider this to be a well told story and have rated it 4.5 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book where the good guys win.

I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.

Home to Texas by Kaki Warner is the second book in her Brides of Rough Creek Texas series. This started with bang, as we meet KD Whitcomb, our heroine, as she is a soldier stationed in Afghanistan. When KD’s superior officer goes to help free a young boy kidnapped and being brutalized by a powerful Afghanistan leader, she goes with her. All hell breaks loose, as her superior officer is killed, and KD was shot in the back, but she was able to return the fire against the leader in self-defense. KD is sent to a hospital to recover from very serious life-threatening injuries, both physically and mentally.

Richard Murdock, our hero and CID officer, is assigned to this case to interview KD, when she awakes from her unconscious state. After getting all the facts, Richard believes KD was acting in self-defense, but the army worries about the consequences, especially from Afghanistan leaders. The leader, whose son was killed threatens Richard, as well as KD and promises revenge, even though the son was evil. Richard is not happy, and makes a decision to leave the army and restart his life.

KD returns home to the family ranch at Rough Creek, with her family watching over her recovery. Richard decides to stay close to KD, and help her through the army investigations, which in a short period she is cleared, but at the same time, is forced to leave the army and keep everything classified. Richard and KD slowly find themselves attracted to each other, and he is determined to keep a close eye on her, as he fears her life is in danger, as he stays with her at Rough Creek. I really liked Richard and KD together, as they had great chemistry, but I knew they each had their own issues that could complicate their relationship. It was great to see all of KD’s family, her mother, sisters, brother-in-law, and ranch hands. It was also nice to see KD bond with some of those she met through PST meetings. I loved how the family all accepted Richard, especially Dalton, who made sure Richard told him the truth and what they might face at the ranch. What follows is an exciting, tense, action packed last half of the book, when the enemy comes closer.

It was an edge of your seat thriller that held our breaths worrying who will survive the attack. Home to Texas was a wonderful addition to this series. I loved Dalton and Raney in the first book, as well as Richard and KD, and I look forward to learning more about the rest of sisters. I will note that the beginning of the book I did find stressful for a romance, but it turned out to be a great story. Warner created wonderful characters, as I loved them all. If you want a pure romance, great couple, wonderful characters and a background storyline of horses, training and competition, then you should be reading this book. Home to Texas was very well written by Kaki Warner.

In this second novel of the Brides of Rough Creek Texas series, the spotlight is on KD Whitcomb, West Point graduate and Army Second Lieutenant serving in Afghanistan. She’s proud of her military career and appreciates the camaraderie among soldiers. The last thing she would do is jeopardize that, until she’s faced with a difficult choice… follow orders or do the right thing. What she does next comes at a terrible cost, and it follows her all the way home to Texas.
Back in the States, KD’s conduct is under investigation, and Richard Murdock is the Chief Warrant Officer assigned to gathering evidence. In reviewing the facts, Richard sees the merit in what she did, and he understands why she did it. He also understands that by defending her insubordinate actions, he’s putting his own career at risk. But an even greater risk is unfolding back in Afghanistan, where a plot for vengeance against KD is brewing. Time for the Whitcomb family to circle the wagons, Texas style.
KD’s story is fraught with tension and conflict, tempered by humor, and the solidarity of family and friends. Another Warner winner.

This one wound up being a DNF for me, but I really think that it's a "me" problem. For starters, I am a pretty traditional romance reader and at 25% there was nary a romantic notion in sight. I mean, you can tell it's coming - but I"m not that patient.

That said, the set-up is interesting. And I may circle back to it when my reading needs are not so "immediate gratification" centered the way they are right now. I also had an appreciation for the writing, though the storytelling was a little slow for me (I mean, obviously). There was perhaps too much unnecessary detail that didn't move the story along.

In the end, I put the book down for good (for now) at 25%. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to read and review.

This is not an easy read. What happens to the injured soldier when they come home? How do they deal with their experiences and the circumstances and memories of the situation in which they were injured. Recovery is not easy and return to "normal" is even harder. And a continued threat makes it worse. Warner delves into all these issues with this unflinching story. The reader is pulled into the experience with the characters. It is not an easy read, but a really good one.

I loved, loved, loved this book!

Home To Texas by Kaki Warner is the second book in her Brides of Rough Creek Texas series. The storyline is fascinating, so complex and original. Heroine West Point graduate KD Whitcomb is second in command of a Female Engagement Team in Afghanistan. Following a very ugly incident there where KD is almost killed she meets hero Richard Murdock, the CID officer investigating the Afghanistan incident. The subsequent events make for quite interesting reading. There's plenty of action and fascinating interactions. I really liked KD and Richard and all the secondary characters. The bad guys were well described and dealt with in a way that made me cheer. It was great seeing so much of Raney and Dalton from book one in the series, Rough Creek. I felt really good after reading this story and greatly appreciate the author's point of view throughout. Kiki Warner's writing style is just what I enjoy reading. This author is most definitely on my "Must Read" list!

I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

Home To Texas had me wanting me KD and Richard. I didn't want to see their story end!
This new to me author did a great job combining suspense, drama and romance . The characters were also witty and sassy ! There are a lot of wounded vets but this was a unique story and a book that will stay with you long after you're finished.

Home to Texas is part two of a series, but reads fairly well as a stand alone. This book is a suspense filled romance filled with characters who you care about and root for. The author's attention to detail is excellent and helps drive the storyline, keeping the reader riveted. Home to Texas is yet another book I didn't want to end filled with characters I would like to read more about.
