Great book that I finally got to on my TBR list. The world building is fantastic, and not bogged down with over information or stereotypical tropes. The characters were likeable from the very beginning.
This was the second book in the Heir of Blood and Fire series. While I didn't read the first, it was not hard to catch up. So much action, so much intrigue and I love a paranormal romance, nothing better. I think I'll go back and read the first, then look for the third in the series. Was a quick read, but so much happening - was out of breath when I hit the ending. Definitely worth the time and effort.
I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.
Another great story full of Calla's adventures. I love her connection with Thalia and how she is able to learn her gifts now. Calla is still that shy mortal but I predict in book 3 that timidness is going to fly right out of the window.
I loved being in Kai's kingdom and I bet what I envisioned in my head isn't even the half of how beautiful it really is.
I'm so over every male falling in love with Calla after being around her for a minute, but I guess that's how much power she has. Even if she had no idea about that power.
I'm curious to see what crazy things are going to happen in book 3.
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book had an amazing plot, but I felt the characters were a bit hard to connect to.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
oOf Fire and Water is the second installment to the Heir of Blood and Fire series, I enjoyed the characters and the world-building I unfortunately did not read the first book and I believe I missed important background information so parts of this fell short for me. However, I consider that to be due in part by stepping into a previously established world without the full experience of original world and character building. I still felt it was a great read but I highly suggest starting with book one since I don’t feel this fully enjoyable as a stand-alone but I do think it’s worth reading.
I gave this 3.75 out of 5 stars
I like how our main character, Calla grow into strong, independent heroine. She continues to learn about her powers and at the same time gains new friends.
Two cons:
1) I felt the 2nd book is lacking (or maybe because I miss Trystan's interaction with Calla (and some of the characters)
2) The cliffhanger. I do not like cliffhangers (good thing I kept myself from hurling my tablet across the room).
Overall, it is a good story and I recommend it to those who are into fantasy-adventure.
I was looking forward to this, after really enjoying the first book.
But this just didn't hold my attention. The things I enjoyed about the first book, I didn't really like them in this one. The pacing was too quick, I remembered nothing of what happened in book 1 - and I mean nothing. And since I didn't remember anything, I really wasn't invested and would find a million other things to focus on.
I'm bummed I didn't enjoy this, but it happens.
this was a great sequel in the Heir of Blood and Fire series, I enjoyed the characters and the world that they were in. It was a great read.
I really like this series and I am eagerly awaiting book 4. I did find that it was a bit of a filler book but there was an interesting plot twist/storyline between the 2 main characters. I hope the author is able to quickly finish out the series for all of us who are fans.
I would rate this as 3 1/2

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Of Fire and Water was a pretty good sequel. In it, you are with Calla who finally reaches the island that was supposed to be her safe place. Even though it doesn't last, because of a weird evil Queen, she winds up making friends and escaping to another world.
I still feel like I don't have all the information because I have so many questions. Whether it's about one of the many princes who are pretty obvious with their feelings.. or the overall thread of death hanging over them. Add in an old Seer who sees someone close to her dying.. and the adventure goes into all kinds of chaos.
I'll admit that I liked getting to meet some of the new characters. Also, if certain people don't play with Spot soon.. send him my way. That little sea monster was so freaking cute. As for the ending? Oh man, I have so many questions floating around in my head. I wonder if what the Seer predicted will come true or if she can somehow bamboozle the crap out of this situations and save the one she loves.
Definitely need the next book stat!
I didn’t think I could enjoy this as much as I loved the first book, boy was I wrong, so much was crammed into this was packed into this book. friendship, love, betrayal, loyalty and magic. I think I loved the characters even more and then I was introduced to new characters competed for my love, the romance is amazing, just what I’d been waiting for. Can’t wait for more
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
I started reading this book as soon as I had finished the first book! I was lucky to receive an ARC a few days before release and I enjoyed the first book a lot, so I was really excited for this book! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book just as much as the first book! I thought that the plot was developed very well and a lot happened in it! I wasn't sure what direction the plot was going to go in, but I loved the direction it did go in! There was some romance in the plot and I was really happy that there was more than in the first book! It added a lot to the plot, but again there wasn't lots of it! There was some action and suspense in the plot as well, which added to it and fueled it and allowed for more to happen! The characters were again amazing and made this book even better! Calla was again the main character, and in this book she discovered more about her powers and about her ancestors and where she came from! Calla also went through a lot again, but I felt like she was stronger and more in control! She was also very young and she had to make some decisions to protect those around her and the people she cared about! Trystan was again the love interest of Calla and he didn't make a lot of appearances in the first book, but I'm happy to say that he made more appearances in this book! I was really happy about this because I wanted to know more about Trystan and a big secret came out in this book as well! I also loved the secondary characters, especially Sabine and Markus! I felt like both these characters supported Calla and they made quite a team! There was also a hint of a love triangle in this book between Calla, Trystan and Kai, but I'm not 100% sure if it's going to develop into a full blown love triangle in future books! This book was again only written from Calla's point of view! I was expecting it to be because the first book was written this way! I loved this book only being written through Calla's eyes because it was continuing her journey! Again, I would have liked to have maybe gotten inside some of the other characters heads as well! I felt like it would added to the plot and allowed for even more things to happen, especially as characters like Trystan had secrets! I now can't wait to read the next book in this series and see where the characters journey is going to go! The ending of this book was also left at a pretty big cliffhanger, so I'm now even more desperate to find out what's going to happen next! I'm not sure when the next book is going to release, but it said at the end of this book that it should be in the about three months time! That's not long of a wait! I'll definitely be reading it as soon as it releases! The cover for this book is also absolutely stunning! I love how well it suits the cover for the first book and it suits the feel of the book! The cover model is also the perfect Calla and represents her very well!
This picks up right after the first one.
Calla is trying to figure out her powers and see where she belongs.
Be warned it ends with a cliffhanger
The world building in this story was amazing. I fell in love with book one and book two was even better. I loved Calla and just everything about this story. I totally need book three now.
This is story is a continuation of Calla’s story. I read it as a stand alone. It was slightly difficult for me to get started in the story because there was background I obviously didn’t know and I am not a fan of vampire fiction. (Somehow I had missed that when o selected this book)
However! The author’s story telling and pacing quickly drew me in. I truly enjoyed her characters. Calla is a young woman relying on her friends as she transforms into who she was made to be. She has a crew of immortal friends that come to her rescue and one mortal who she champions. They are in hiding from Roehl, an evil Vampire who is set on possessing Calla. Calla is no weakling damsel in distress. She is part Vampire and part Incendian, a magical being that can wield the elements.
If you enjoy adventure, love triangles, magical worlds, and a coming of age story, you should give this story a try. I’ll be waiting for the next book in the series to see how the cliff hanger resolves!
Wow this book went so differently from what I had anticipated going into it and I think it's safe to say it managed to avoid middle book syndrome for me as well. The world this book is set in continues to be one of my favorite things about it. I loved getting to explore even more of the continent and to experience more of the various cultures built into the world. They're really all so unique and I particularly enjoyed the nuance that came with how different cultures treated Calla's vampire status differently. I also liked seeing Calla start to come into her own with this book. You can tell she's starting to gain confidence and she's no longer the meek, hesitant girl we met in the first book. Another one of my favorite things about this book was the relationships in it. It's so refreshing to see healthy female friendships instead of seeing females pitted against each other, especially considering some of the romance details that developed in this book. I'm definitely rooting for a second romance now!
The book was a bit slowly paced for me again like it was in the first. I didn't get truly invested in the storyline this time until around the 70% mark when things started to pick up but I wasn't bored for the previous pages by any means. The book definitely has some interesting twists that I didn't see coming such as the true extent of Calla's powers. And that twist with the romance! I felt like my heart had been ripped from my chest. The book closes with a cliffhanger which is different from its predecessor so I'm eager to see what happens in the final book and how the various characters and storylines are resolved. My ARC copy has a note from the author saying she hopes to have the next book out in the next 3 months so here's to hoping that we don't live with questions for too long!
This was one of my most highly anticipated sequels this year. And let me tell you it did not disappoint. Action, angst, drama, friendship goals. More Kai *drool*. I lost sleep over it needing to know where the story was going. And the cliff hanger ? Daaaang. Am I ever glad Cameo intends to publish the next instalment this year.
This was a good second installment. I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed the first story which is a good indication.
I loved the character development from the first book until now.
Great world building while still keeping it interesting.
All in all would recommend!
This book picks up right where the previous book left off, with Calla and her companions heading to her ancestor's homeland where she hopes to find answers for her magic. What she finds isn't what she was expecting. She gets answers to some of her questions but only more questions arise.
Calla gains a new ally and companion among the members of the island, and has to flee, ending up in an underwater sanctuary.
This book had a lot more drama and a lot less action than the previous book. Roehl is very much a background character in this book. He haunted and tormented Calla in her dreams, but we never actually see him in this book. More attention is focused on Calla and her trying to gain control and understanding over her magic. More of the world is explored, and while I really liked seeing that I think putting Roehl on more of a back burner made him feel less like a threat.
The drama that this book focused on, I hope it ties more into the plot of Roehl and everything dealing with that more since it took up so much of this book and felt a little disconnected from Calla's survival and her discovering more about her magic.
This book had one heck of a cliffhanger though, so I am looking forward to that book when it comes out.
ARC received from Netgalley. The review is 100% honest.
I jumped right into this book without reading the first one but able to grasp the situation with not much trouble.
Vampire princess with elemental powers? Calla is amazing, powerful lady indeed. I like how she learn to control her newfound powers and fight her own battles, not cowering and waiting for rescue. Although yes, she has Trystan who is always trying to save her, Kai who is somehow always there to help her, and of course ever loyal Marcus.
3.5 stars
Easy to read and fast paced. It's a good story although a bit too swoony for my taste (all the guys are a little bit too perfect as characters, in my opi). The magic system, however, is interesting, especially mixed with vampiric tale.
