Funny, sweet, and swoony! Loved the Scotland setting! The heroine wasn't my favorite, though. She was a little too quirky for me.
Interesting premise, though I feel as if I've read a book just like it within the past few years. I wish the main female character had been a little less... interesting? She got on my nerves sometimes. Unfortunately this book wasn't enough to stand out amidst the many books with similar ideas.
This grumpy/sunshine rom-com was a delight in book form. While it was sweet and fun, the atmosphere from the Scottish Highlands wasn't forgotten, nor was the characterization. Rowan was mmph and Bonnie was both relatable and off beat while not being too over the top.
For fans of P.S. I Love You and Made of Honor, this book will hit.
I love Meghan Quinn somuch and this book is no exception , her writing worked is so good and you just know reading her books why she’s so popular. I loved the heroine so cute and quirky, this rom-com is just on point. Fabulous
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. I've read several Meghan Quinn and this was just ok.
Bonnie & Rowan are the quintessential hate sex couple and we all know where that leads.
Bonnie does what every millennial woman dreams of, working in a coffee shop in another country wishing for a fresh start. Meghan Quinn’s books are always relatable and The Highland Fling doesn’t disappoint.
Where’s the Rowan to my Bonnie? Anyone know?
Another masterpiece by Meaghan Quinn- this author never disappoints.this story is funny, witty, sexy, emotional, I laughed, dot angry but enjoyed every single written word!
This was a cute book, I enjoyed it a lot. I would love to run away to Scotland and open a bakery/coffee shop!
I will be honest Meghan Quinn's writing is a hit or miss for me. This one was a miss. Thank you for letting me read and review this book.
Where to even begin? Besides the fact that I now must travel to Scotland at some point in my life or die trying.
As all Meghan Quinn books, this was quirky, funny, sexy and angsty.
I loved Rowan, big tough guy with a gushy center heart.
Bonnie was quirky af. At times a bit too much but that didn’t deter me from enjoying this book.
My only setback from not loving this one completely was how Bonnie was treated by people she loved. Her BFF for one, sure she was fighting her own demons but man talk about one sided friendship. The gaslighting and Bonnie’s quick response to blame herself and cater to those who hurt her? That was unreal. The much deserved groveling was nonexistent. Her brush offs and quick forgiveness just irked me.
The ending felt rushed and although we have a HEA that I love to have, it was anticlimactic.
Yes it was a fun read, but for all the turmoil and angst that we had to go through, the ending didn’t feel like it was enough. All in all still a fun read.
this is easily meghan quinn at her wittiest, most dynamic story best.
One thing that i always appreciate about Meghan’s story telling is that it’s never what it seems, her characters are unique & their issues just as unique - but somehow meghan get its to work & all come together to bring forth a beautiful story that leaves you laughing, a little bit breathless, and a whole lot in love. the highland fling was no different!
Bonnie and her best friend Dakota decide to leave LA for a while and go to run a small coffee shop in Scotland for a few month. Bonnie especially needs some time away, to find herself and her purpose. She’s expects to spend some time with her best friend, sight see, and have fun running the coffee shop together. What she’s not expecting is Rowan. Rowan’s parents own the coffee shop that Bonnie and Dakota are going to be running, and while they’re out of time Rowan is sort of keeping an eye on things. Bonnie and Rowan do not hit it off right away. It’s almost like they clash a bit at first, but you can tell with some time they’ve got it bad for each other. I loved the banter these two had!
Bonnie and Rowan have things going on in their life, and this book isn’t as light as some of MQ’s other books. Rowan is dealing with feeling like a disappointment from his dad after his brother died while they were hiking together, and then learns that his dad has cancer and only a month left to live. Bonnie’s best friend Dakota is struggling with being confident in herself after her last relationship, and keeps wondering if she’s “gay enough.”
3.5 stars
How I have missed Meghan Quinn! I waited way too long to read her again. True to Quinn’s nature, The Highland Fling was a fun and whimsical read. I loved the heroine who was such a strong and forward character. I loved seeing her bring Rowan out of the shell he had been hiding under. Seeing two very dominant personalities go head-to-head was awesome. I loved that there wasn’t a shy, quiet type here. It gave the story a fresh feel! An easy 5 star read.
First off, I loved the setting for this book, the small town Scotland location was just perfection. Along with that I really enjoyed grumpy Rowan and slightly over the top Bonnie!
Great romantic comedy adventure that made me laugh and swoon and I also really enjoyed the secondary story as well. Feels like a great road trip read!
I wanted to love this one so much. I started this a while ago and just couldn’t get into it but when I was delayed during my flight home I picked it back up on my kindle and finally wrapped it up.
This one had so much potential. Best friends moving to Scotland to work at a coffee shop and fix it up. Yes please! Can I do this in real life with my besties?? But when it comes down to it the friendship really rubbed me the wrong way. They were kind of toxic together, super needy and then ignoring each other for their respective relationships. It was really frustrating. At one point the main characters get in an argument with the male lead and then her bff on the same day and it was brutal for her. They both were so terrible to her and honestly she didn’t deserve any of it. I was so upset for her. Why would an author try to take down their main character in that way?
I enjoyed the relationship with her and the Scot but he wasn’t ready for a relationship at all. He had some serious baggage. They definitely had some cute moments. I would for sure have enjoyed him a bit more without all the family drama which also seemed kind of vicious and unnecessary?
I don't’ know this one really rubbed me the wrong way in places. I loved the idea of this book but the execution wasn’t for me. Can I get a different book with this premise? Cause I loved the thought behind it!
I really liked this book. Bonnie is a firecracker and Rowan is tortured by his past. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Bonnie had me laughing a few times and Rowan had me wondering what happened in his past. I love how this story comes together and how Bonnie breaks down Rowan’s walls to know the real him.
I love Meghan Quinn’s work & this was no different! Set in Scotland? Yes please! Be sure to check this out!
If you love Scottish Men in a Rom-Com, than Highland Fling can scratch that itch for you. I Devoured this!
Yep, I’m going to regret having started this last night a 8:30, because it resulted in an all nighter as I consumed this one.
I will say as a disclaimer that it was not life changing and earth shattering, but the storyline entertained me all night.
I loved the banter between Rowan and Bonnie. And I mean who doesn’t want a burley Scotsman ravaging them.
The writing was light and funny. Storyline so easy to navigate, at some points you see Bonnie as shallow and superficial, and it is needed in the storyline. In the end you see her change and can’t help root for the couple.
I so loved this book! What a fun read. 2 girls who are looking to find themselves, find an opportunity to get away from their life, take a break and see what else life has to offer. Welcome to Scotland and all that it offers! Meet Rowan, grumpy guy Who lives in Scotland, in a small town where his life is dictated by his family‘s wishes and the town‘s needs. Meet Bonnie! An American, a lost sole looking for what is next in her adventure. Her best friend sees an ad to cover and run a coffee shop for a few months in Scotland. A perfect place to set out to find yourself. Little did she know she would meet the challenge of her life and see what life truly has to offer. A fun witty romantic comedy and true Meghan fashion! There’s also a side romance in this one that is sweetly done…. I really enjoyed the book. Liked, loved everything about this.
You know when they say never judge a book by it's cover? Well, I think this is extremely fitting for the book. Not that the cover looks bad, but it's not a eye catching (to me) as some other ones but let me tell you...After reading this book, this cover has DEFINITELY caught my attention. This book was amazing. At one point in the beginning, I was laughing so hard that my back hurt and I had tears running down my face. At another point, I was even crying. She had me on an emotional roller coaster and I highly recommend this book.
