This was my first Meghan Quinn book and I’m not entirely sure her writing worked for me. I can see why she’s so popular, the book was very readable. But I found the heroine to be a little *too* quirky and some of the rom-com moments to be too much. I put the book down at 35% in and didn’t feel like picking it up again. DNF

This is a light-hearted comfort read -- exactly what I was hoping it would be. I loved the chemistry between all of the characters (not just the leads) and especially the friend group as a whole. It added a really charming layer to the story. While Bonnie's personality did feel a bit exaggerated at times, it was still a fun book overall, and I look forward to reading whatever Meghan Quinn does next.

Rowan and Bonnie are an incredible story! Meghan Quinn once again has your laughing hysterically then crying the next! It is such a funny and real story of 2 people.
Bonnie and her best friend Dakota go to Scotland for 6 months to try something new and see what they really want in life. They fall in love with the town and people there.
I loved watching Bonnie find herself, open us to Rowan abs herself. And Rowan.... he’s the grumpy but truly amazing guy. This story just makes you fall in love with love and life!!

I love all things Meghan Quinn, she is one of my favorite go-tos when I need a good laugh. However, this one fell a little short for me. Rowan is an absolute dream. I LOVED him. Bonnie...she gave me a headache lol. She was just too much even for me. Overall, it’s a great story with great bones, but the heroine I just couldn’t get behind. She drove me absolutely bonkers.

This is only my second or third book by Meghan Quinn and I was SO excited when I read the book synopsis. Two friends move to Scotland to help run a coffee shop. I love reading about far off places that I'd love to travel to one day. Scotland is high on that list! When Bonnie and her friend arrive in Corsekelly, they run into Rowan, a local handyman. Things don't get started off on the right foot, but soon their feelings begin to change. I really enjoyed the build up in the first half of the story, however, by the second half, I wasn't loving it as much. I found much of the second half of the story to be boring and dragged out. If the book at continued like the first half was, this would easily have been a four or five star read for me!

So I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of leaving reviews that aren’t 100% positive in this space. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a negative review, because I did enjoy the Highland Fling, but for me it just didn’t hit the mark as 4/5 star review.

Things I wasn’t a fan of: In all honesty it took me a while to get into this story, and I felt at times even though things were happening, they weren’t really happening. And I really felt that the local vernacular was way overused just for the sake of having in the story. It made it super unrealistic in what otherwise was a really realistic setting.

Things I loved: I loved Rowan and Bonnie’s chemistry! These two definitely had some steam and done in a way only Meghan Quinn can write. Rowan is for sure a Grumpy McGrumpster hero and I am such a sucker for those. I also really enjoyed watching Bonnie’s character arc and growth. The transformation of the coffee shop was also amazing. And of course I loved the hairy coos!

So I’m not saying don’t read this book! I picked this book up when I was in a slump, after reading a ton of dark romance and it ended up being exactly what I needed to get out of that slump. For me, it just wasn’t my favorite from this author, but still an over all feel good read.

This audio book was fantastic! The narrators really nailed the accents and I was thoroughly entertained. The story starts off with a grumpy hero and there is tension between Bonnie and Rowen. But after being forced to spend some time together, they are able to get along. I want to go to this town that they are in (Scotland). It sounds so pleasant and all the talk of those baked goods had me drooling. I learned about a bunch of new Scottish things like harry coos, tattie scones and butteries. It was like going on a road trip, that's what it felt like while I was listening. The relationships between the characters were interesting and cause for drama. And I was a complete sobbing mess by the end. Meghan has a way of pulling out all of the emotions while still laughing your head off.

I did enjoy this book. I found it entertaining. The jokes were a bit funny.

Would I read it again? Most likely not but that is just because it wasn't my favourite book by this author. I do recommend this book.

Bonnie is in a rut. Fired from her third job in as many years in LA, she’s not really living her dream. Her best friend and roomie, Dakota, announces they will be running a coffee shop in a small town in Scotland for six months. Bonnie is suddenly thrust into a whole different world, and it doesn’t help that one resident of the small town named Roman is grumpy and rude, despite everyone thinking he’s wonderful. Will she be able to figure out what she wants to do, or is she going to distract herself with the town goat, or the stone from that tv show about fun times and genetalia?
There is a moment where I felt like someone sacrifices their dreams for someone else, which lost a star.
This was a perfect book for me to read at this time. I loved it. Laughed so much!

This isn't my favorite book from Meghan Quinn but I did find it enjoyable. Rowan is an absolute treasure. Bonnie annoyed me most of the time but the other characters made up for it. If you like romcoms, I would give this a chance.

This was a fun book with a good dose of emotion and drama mixed in. Still not quite sure why Bonnie and Dakota were picked to run the coffee shop but no matter. It was an enjoyable read.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This book was adorable. It made me want to move to Scotland and explore. I loved the characters, the setting, and the depth near the end of the story. I binged this in one night and did not regret reading it for a single second. Meghan Quinn books are hit or miss for me but this one was definitely enjoyable and cute and happy.

I wanted to love this grumpy + sunshine romance set in the Scottish Highlands sooo much but I struggled to really connect with the characters and found the writing cringe-worthy in a lot of places. Cake obsessed American Bonnie travels with her best friend to run a cafe in a small Scottish town and while there the sparks fly between her and Rowan, the cafe owners' son. Rowan is dealing with the grief of his brother's death and what he thinks is the loss of his artistic dreams and Bonnie is searching for something she can be passionate about.

There was something about the writing that just didn't come off as genuine and seemed a little too one-dimensional for me (although I did really appreciate that Bonnie's friend was struggling with her sexual identity and recovering from an emotionally abusive relationship - her storyline was delicately handled).

It's also possible the narrators affected my feelings because I listened to the audio version of this book and I didn't love the voices at all. Terribly fake Scottish accents are the worst! Recommended for fans of slow burn romances, grumpy heroes, Scottish settings and SOOO much delicious baking (the food was probably the best parts for me). Fans of Much ado about you or Finding Fraser may find more to love in this dual perspective, open door steamy romance than I did.

I ended up DNFing this book at 40%. I know a lot of people who loved this book, and I will be coming back to read this book/future books by this author but this one was not working for me. The main character was just not enjoyable for me and I was not enjoying her POV. Life is too short to force yourself to read a book.

This is what I've been missing in a Meghan Quinn book! It had the best humor, a little over the top sometimes, but the characters were perfect. The hero was perfect! I loved his broody, grumpiness. It made for great interaction between the two main characters. I thought the story flowed really well. At times it did get wordy and I would start to lose interest but the author was able to bring me back into the story. I really enjoyed this story. If you need a fun, cute, and entertaining read pick this one up!

The Highland Fling by @meghanquinnbooks

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You see what I did there? Yea.. 10 FREAKING STARS! Because let’s be honest here.. why cap perfection at a mere 5?! If I could leave a million bajillion stars for this I would! This was JUST. THAT. GOOD!!!

*squeals* Ahhhhh I cannot gush enough about this hilariously delightful romance! It’s my first of this author’s works and believe me I’ll be ordering her entire backlist as of today! Luckily my wallet will thank me for now because her stories are all on KU!!

Ok ok… getting ahold of myself here.. Bonnie is fudging amazing!! Her sass and humor has me laughing so dang much I forgot I needed to be quiet during the babies’ naps 😂 whoops 🤪! Like if I could take Dakota’s place and be her best friend, my soul would have found it’s sarcastic soulmate in her. And Rowan… ugh CUE THE SWOON because I just about found myself a new bonny Scottish lad to get hot and bothered with. Talk about broody McDreamy - this guy took it to a whole new level but when we find out his story, there won’t be a dry eye in the room. But this story is not just a romance - it’s about true friends overcoming new beginnings, forgiveness for being too prideful, learning to live life after loss… all while set in the gorgeous picturesque Scotland…. Complete with a screaming goat and penis stone! yep you read that right 😂 sold yet?? YOU BETTER BE!!! Like seriously… what are you doing reading my caption?!?! GO GET THIS NOW!

The first half of this book was a struggle for me. With Bonnie and Dakota heading to Scottish highland to manager a coffee shop while the owners take a vacation for the first time in awhile. Bonnie is a bit of a hot mess and she has been fired for the third time, she is struggling to find her purpose.

The coffee shop is also very slow. The tourists that come by, don't come into the shop. Some bad reviews from before keeping them away. Bonnie decides to do some renovating and needs the help of the owner's son Rowan. While Rowan doesn't want to bake his family recipes due to his strained relationship with his father.

I liked Bonnie's journey to finding herself and her purpose. Rowan also had some family dynamics to work out. However this book was just a little too slow for me, that I struggled to get into it.

One of my favorite authors has done it again! Meghan Quinn never disappoints. I know any time I pick up one of her books I’m going to get some of witty humor.

The Highland Fling was such a fun fast paced read. I will read anything this author writes. This book is a one click must!

This book was bloody brilliant … or should I say it was pure dead brilliant!

I am always apprehensive when I read a story set in Scotland as I live there but MEghan Quinn nailed it!

Bonnie and Dakota decide to go to Bonnie Scotland and leave their American lives behind! They go to run a coffee shop in CorseKelly for the next six months. Their friendship is everything and as important to the storyline than Rowan and Bonnie’s relationship!

Rowan … let me tell you he’s fit for sure as we say here!! I love how grumpy and crabbit he is- the craic, the laughters and the emotions… I freaking loved it!

If you’re looking for a fun slow burn , this one is for you!

After a lot of heavier and darker reads lately, a Meghan Quinn book was just what I was looking for. They are always guaranteed to make me laugh and The Highland Fling was no exception.

Bonnie and her best friend Dakota up and move to Scotland for six months to work in a coffee shop after Bonnie lost her job and her home and in general needs a life reset. Once there, they meet Rowan who is the son of the couple who owns the coffee shop. He is unfriendly and broody and generally wants nothing to do with them.

Over time, Bonnie seems to find her niche and it seems like Scotland might be exactly what she needs. I struggled a little with Bonnie in the beginning but warmed up to her over time. I absolutely loved the fact that this book took place in Scotland and how well the author portrayed the book and the language and the accents. I felt like I was truly immersed in all things Scottish. I also really liked Rowan. While he came off somewhat unfriendly toward Bonnie in the beginning, it was obvious how big his heart was and how much he was hurting and how much he had been through. As the book went on, my heart continued to go out for him.

All in all I found this book to be a fun, light read, though there were definitely some tougher moments. I enjoyed the moments of comedic relief and of course the location, and I loved the HEA!
