This was a fun story that will have you both laughing out loud and crying. Bonnie and Dakota have an amazing friendship and that is what starts their journey. Their individual journeys take them apart in some ways, but their friendship grows and they grow individually. I loved Bonnie's chemistry with Rowan, even when they were "hating" each other. This story shows so much character growth and was truly a pleasure to read.
While I didnt enjoy this as much as her baseball series I still love Meghan Quinn's writing style and also why does she always have to make me sob?
Thank you to the publisher for the early copy!
Synopsis: Bonnie has been dumped, fired, and evicted, so she allows herself to be talked into moving to the Scottish Highlands for 6 months to run a coffee shop. She hopes she’ll find her career passion. Rowan is the grouchy town handyman (and the coffee shop owners’ son); he immediately decides to steer clear of the American lasses, but finds that increasingly difficult as his friends push him and Bonnie together and they start to develop a friendship.
The book starts out pretty over the top farcical (though funny), and I found Bonnie to be a pretty irritating character because she’s so immature and self centered, but the story grew on me. Rowan and Bonnie both have a lot to learn about meeting their own expectations and worrying less about what other people think of them.
Content warning: grief, death of sibling, parent with cancer
I wanted to love this one so hard, but I could not stand the heroine. I’m all for a flawed main character, it’s part of what makes them authentic. But there was just too much about Bonnie that made her absolutely unbearable. I loved Rowan (like loved x10000), I loved Dakota, I loved the townsfolk, I did not like Bonnie and it made it so hard to want to keep reading. The story was fine, a good premise, but it also wrapped up a bit too nicely for me when there was so much heavy shit going down and it felt rushed.
I don’t know. It just feels like we tried too hard to make this one funny and make the heroine endearing but it just missed the mark for me. Better luck next time.
Thank you to Montlake for my review copy!
In need of a change, Bonnie and her best friend Dakota head to Scotland, to run a cafe for 6 months.
The cafe is not what they expected and needs a lot of work - can Bonnie to be the one to do this and turn around its fortunes, and will she be able to charm the owner's grumpy son.
An enjoyable read, emotional at times, especially the end of the book!
This one was unfortunately a miss for me. I absolutely adore Meghan and think she writes some of the best steam out there (and that one was absolutely also true in this case), but I just really could not get behind Bonnie as a character and that really took me out of the story. There were some laugh out loud moments, a few moments and swoon and lots of excellent heat, but it wasn't enough to turn it around for me. I read it through until the very end and think that Bonnie learned a lot and I'm always happy to see a character grow and mature, but it just wasn't the best match for me. I'll absolutely look forward to picking up MQ's next release next month!
Oh wow Meghan Quinn! You had me laughing out loud and you had me crying! The Highland Fling is a fantastic book to read! Just the kind of book that I love from an author that I love to read.
This is Bonnie St. James and Rowan MacGregor’s story! There are several other secondary characters whom I loved too! Dakota Dalton is Bonnie’s BFF! Bonnie and Dakota decide they need to get away and there was a help wanted ad for a job in Corsekelly, Scotland for 6 months. They get the job and head to Scotland!
They meet some rather interesting people and perhaps some interesting animals too. I can’t say more but do remember the name Fergus!
Bonnie and Rowan don’t get along at first. Mostly because of Rowan. But of course that is what makes a good story when there is friction between the characters and then the sparks fly!
The Highland Fling is a must read if you love books that you become involved with the characters in the book. Another 5 +++ star read for me!
This is not my first Megan Quinn book, and it certainly won’t be my last-she is one of my "go-to" authors! This book had a somewhat slow start to it, but it continued to pick up the pace and I absolutely loved it. Our hero’s name is Rowan and he is an absolutely dream of a hero. The heroine is Bonnie and I just loved her as well. I love the way she finds herself in this book. It is a slow process, but she becomes a very strong woman. There are some moments in this book that are laugh out loud hilarious. I love it and I love a book that has me do that, but it doesn’t happen very often. The support characters are interesting and definitely add to the book. Thank you Megan Quinn for this book. A strong 5 stars! Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book for this 100% honest review. This is one of those rare books that I will totally gift to a friend.
Grab the audiobook of this one and you won't be disappointed! The Highland Fling has to be my favorite Meghan Quinn book to date, and that's saying a lot with how much I love her books, especially her teacher series.
I feel like reading the Outlander series has properly prepared me for the Scottish language and references throughout this story, making it a truly enjoyable experience.
Bonnie St. James is trying to find a career that truly makes her happy, so she takes the chance of a lifetime with her best friend to move and run a coffee shop for a few months while the owners are on vacation.
Enter the owners son and the best character ever, Rowan MacGregor, also known as Kilty McGrumpyshire. He's fiercely protective of his parents, and has put his own dreams on hold after blaming himself for his brothers accidental death.
Bonnie and Rowan are two characters that will win you over immediately. The witty banter is SO good, I recommend drinking carefully while reading this one, as there's plenty of laughter throughout.
This one has every emotion possible and even a few tears were shed. All the aspects of the perfect romcom are in this book and I never wanted it to end. Definitely go and grab this one, especially since it's in KU (then grab the audio for only $1.99) This story is everything and my heart is better for it!
Thank you for the opportunity to review this new novel.
This was not a book for me. The protagonist was inmature and acted childish, which put me off.
As an extremely proud Scottish American with a born & raised Scottish mother I was so excited for The Highland Fling. I couldn’t imagine this authors signature writing, that’s always filled with humor & wit, with the added benefit of the amazingness of a Scottish hero and background being anything less than a book that I would LOVE. And I was right, this book was SO good.
For the romance, give me ALL the grumpy/sunshine romances please because I love them. This was so good with the added benefit of a curmudgeon Scottish man (nothing better). I loved watching Bonnie and Rowan navigate their enemies to lovers relationship with the hilarity and sweetness that they did. I loved watching them both grow and become stronger because of the love they were learning about from the other. Total swoon.
The Scottish countryside, food and words literally warmed my heart so much. My love for Scotland is unparalleled (I am literally named after the Isle of Skye, which is off the coast of Scotland) and I will say this book did Scotland justice so I really appreciate that.
I loved the sub-stories we get relating to Rowan’s parents and his relationship with them. And also, Dakota and Isla’s romance, which may have had me tearing up a few times. This story had such depth that really just makes it so heartfelt and real.
Overall, I adored this book. Tha gradh agam ort for writing a book that was funny & serious, ridiculous at times but so heartfelt, that was steamy & romantic and that also answered the time old question of what do they wear under those kilts.
This story had Meghan’s typical humor but it also had so much more. There was a little teasing, drawn out flirting and passion. There was strife, and trauma. The friendship between the heroine and her bestie was hilarious. The townspeople we meet are amazing and quirky and the whole story has that small town vibe but set in a magical place. I definitely want to visit Scotland now! Meghan gave such beautiful descriptions. I definitely recommend this book!
I was delighted by this book and it had everything you love in a great Meghan Quinn book. From the beginning till the end I laughed and not just little giggles but full on laughs too. The witty banter was a prelude to some steamy chemistry and the romance was sugary sweet.
Meghan whipped up a fantastic book that gave me the warm and fuzzies and a need to visit Scotland. I loved the little small town and all the characters including Fergus. I may have even shed a few tears along with those laughs.
I think I want to find myself a grumpy, hot, Scot. And I’m happily married.
I really loved this book from Willow. It was a refreshing read and a step back from her plot heavy romantic suspense stories. Tell Me You Want me is a standalone office romance, however the heroine Sue is a secondary character from the You Are Mine Series. Now to be honest I wondered why Willow was writing a book about this heroine as she doesn't really stand out in the series but I am so glad she did! Tell Me You Want Me was full of sexy office smuttiness and chemistry for days. It was insta love without being cheesy, it was believable and I devoured it!
The Hero Adrian is a dirty talker and this does involve some degradation and praise scenes between Hero and heroine, which I loved 99% of the time. I really liked that at first it had a bit of a forbidden Boss and Employee vibe to it and they agreed to keep their physical relationship outside of office hours only. There was a subtle storyline running through the book to do with Adrian buying out and breaking down the company that Sue works for and how he makes decisions based on his business head or with his heart in the end.
My one tiny reservation was that at first Sue stood up to Adrian, she wasn't going to step aside for him, she challenged him and sometimes that spark and fire to her personality was lost a little but it really didn't affect my overall opinion of this book.
If you are looking for a quick, steamy, office romance I would recommend giving Tell Me You Want Me a try.
I always look forward to Meghan Quinn brand humor and heart break and this did not disappoint!
I love a Heroine on an adventure and Bonnie id definitely on an adventure. She is down on her luck in love and just life in general when her bestie applies for an international job for the two of them. Off they go to run a coffee shop in Scotland. Bonnie and Dakota are hilarious and adorable besties and we get to see them both find love.
Rowan is the grumpiest Scot in the land and just rubs Bonnie the wrong way- will he eventually rub her the right way? You'll just have to read it! They are hilarious together and yes Meghan is going to rip your heart out as she is known for, but for those of you with 8 years later PTSD that is not going to happen so relax. Your heart will break for Bonnie though because she just really tries so hard and has this great sense of accomplishment and everyone lets her down. Don't give up on them though there will be happy days and cake all the cake.
I really loved this one so much!
My stomach muscles hurt from laughing so much! Everybody knows how sexy a Scottish accent is, I mean hello…Sean Connery or Gerard Butler? No matter how hot Rowan sounds or looks it’s his caring personality and grumpy disposition that keeps me reading. Bonnie is the humor that brings life to this little village. The town’s characters add so much charm and love, I just want to plan my trip to Scotland. Quinn is an entertaining writer with three dimensional characters that are very relatable. I’ve provided my review honestly after reading an early copy.
4.5 stars
The Highland Fling was full of so many of my favorite things- a grumpy hero and a cheery heroine, witty banter, a charming setting and interesting side characters. I devoured this book at the beach and it was just so darn enjoyable. Author Meghan Quinn always fills her books with hilarious comedic moments and this was full of her trademark wit and a delight!
I adored this story, the characters were so funny!!! I couldn't put it down, I read it in one sitting! Miss Quinn killed it!
A very quick read following to girls who uproot their life in LA to run a coffee shop in the Scottish highlands. Rowan who is the son of the coffee shop owner has been told to help the Americans when they need it and after a meet-aggravate between him and Bonnie does the tension ever fly. Really enjoyed seeing their relationship progress and the development of the side characters as well. I look forward to reading more from Meghan Quinn in the future.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.
The Highland Fling brought me so much belly laughter with the most tension filled frustrating slow burn and a whole host of fantastic characters. It's the gift that kept giving.
This is rom-com at its best!. Passion filled, emotional, relatable with just all the feel good feels when reading. It's my favourite read of 2021.
I loved wee bonnie Bonnie. I think she didn't get enough credit for just how well she turned any situation into laughter. At how quickly she defused things. She has this front which is all crazy and humours so people don't see the sweet vulnerability she hides so well. But bitch I saw and I was rooting for her. I didn't find her immature I just found she lacked a purpose in life and whenever she felt hurt she hid it with her over the top crazy. But the growth really is a thing of beauty here.
Rowan, our very typical broad Scots man who was antisocial abrasive and at times a real asshole. Under all the hard crust was a real sweet soul who was hurting. A man who didn't know where his life was going and didn't really have much in the way of fulfillment. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming watching his growth.
These two had that hate to love vibe I adore. To say they clashed would be an understatement but it wasn't surprising considering they are literally like chalk and cheese in personality.
That tension worked for so many reasons because it gave us that build up, created the palpable connection between them and served us with endless entertainment in the form of bickering and banter. Their relationship didn't come easy to them for many reasons, the biggest being they needed to grow themselves but I feel like the way in which they grew made their journey all the more believable and enjoyable.
I loved this book. Its filled with so much funny, a tonne of sweet and it's fair share of heartbreak. It brings you characters that have heavy stories and situations that take the wind from your sails but in the end I couldn't imagine it any other way. Its wasn't all smooth sailing.. parts left me so frustrated and angry but that's the best part of the book because it really does make you feel and you never know what's coming next. It was a fucking rollercoaster but I loved it hard and I cried even harder.
What a read.
Also... sidenote.
Being Scottish I think this is a pretty great representation of Scots. I laughed so hard at some of the slang because it was like being home.
