The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn is a perfect rom-com set in Scotland. It’s filled with great characters, lots of laughs and great banter.
Bonnie and her best friend Dakota set out on a adventure to run a coffee shop in Scotland. They answer an ad in the paper, and decide they need a change. Rowan is the son of the coffee shop owners, and makes a great first impression on Bonnie. The two start out like oil and water, but the sparks fly and chemistry ignites. This is a slow burn romance, and there are some funny adventures in between.
I just love romance books set in other countries. Meghan tells the story as if you are there and experiencing it along with her characters. It’s a cute story with a small amount of angst and a whole lotta fun.
Take an adventure to Scotland with Meghan as you will not be disappointed!
This was a good rom-com which had me feeling all sorts of feelings, especially in the last few chapters.
I really liked the premise: Two best friends taking a job in Scotland working at a little coffee shop in a small tourist town because they both need to make some changes.
I liked Bonnie for the most part, but at times she was A Lot and acted immature at times.
I LOVED ROWAN, THE GRUMPY SCOTTISH MAN BUILT LIKE A TREE WITH HAIR ON HIS CHEST! He was just perfection.
Overall, this was a good story that made me laugh out loud at times and roll my eyes at other times, but definitely an enjoyable read!
Meghan Quinn plus a story set in Scotland? I was sold before I even read a single page.
Bonnie and her friend Dakota both need a change and apply for temp jobs running a coffee shop in a small town in Scotland. There she meets Rowan, the son of the shop owners, Though it took me a bit to warm up to Bonnie, I ended up liking her and the dynamic she had with Rowan. She had some good character growth while still remaining her quirky, fun self.
The story was a nice blend of humor and romance with more emotional and difficult issues both Bonnie and Rowan face. I also really liked the secondary characters and hope we get stories for a couple of them in the future!
From a crazy goat, to driving a Mini Cooper through a roundabout, to a strapping Scotsman who has the hots for our wee lass Bonnie, “The Highland Fling” has it all. As usual, Ms. Quinn entertains us with her humor, creativity and excellent character relationships.
Bonnie and Dakota are best friends who embark on a trip of a lifetime to Scotland. They are both looking for freedom, fun and a glimpse into the future, and the beauty of Scotland was the perfect backdrop for their adventure. A fresh start was good for both of them and working at a coffee shop and bringing it back to life was just what the doctor ordered. Bonnie is feisty, loves sweets -- especially cake -- and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Ms. Quinn’s vivid description of the Scottish countryside made me feel as if I was there with Bonnie while she tried to figure out what to do about Rowan.
With his good looks, chiseled jaw and sexy accent, Rowan was too good to be true. Bonnie could listen to him talk all day while admiring his tight jeans and flannel shirts. He smelled good, was a bit mysterious and seemed to always come to her rescue. Their verbal sparring was hilarious and it only brought them closer together. Rowan was so dreamy and right out of a romance novel, and the idea of him wearing a kilt was playing on a loop in Bonnie’s head, making her crazy! I can definitely see why Bonnie found it hard to resist him. Everything Ms. Quinn touches turns to gold and with “The Highland Fling” she has given us a romantic comedy, a travelogue of Scotland and a special couple we will never forget.
Meghan Quinn is a new author to me and a really good one! This story is funny, emotional and quite enjoyable.
Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move.
When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American—even if she is a bonny lass.
As Bonnie and Rowan’s paths inevitably cross, insults—and sparks—fly. Can the pair build on their similarities to help each other find purpose and direction…and maybe romance too? Or will their passionate tempers fling them apart?
When I started reading this book, I couldn´t stop laughing. It was hilarious, almost too absurd. Bonnie is so outspoken that you just feel embarrassed for her. Most of the time, because, let’s be honest, she gets the perfect guy so maybe she knows what she is doing? The dialogs are witty, outrageous sometimes and so so funny. This is great writing. And once they are together, the story becomes so emotional, so sweet and romantic that I started to sigh. There are a few really sad family times, but they only make the story more real. All the characters learned a lot along the way and that´s always something beautiful to see.
Dakota and Isla are really sweet too. I loved all the side characters. It was a great reading and I highly recommended.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is one of the best reads of the year, if you are looking for a entertaining, fun read look no further than The Highland Fling which is Bonnie St James and her best friend Dakota’s journey to the Highlands of Scotland. Be warned you will be speaking with a Scottish accent after reading this wonderful story.
Dakota stumbles across an advert to run a coffee shop in Coreskil, in Highlands just at the right time because Bonnie has recently lost her job and has no idea what to do next. From the moment their journey begins so do the fun and games but Bonnie could never imagine how this trip will change her life. Rowan MacGregor is the first local they come across and from the moment they meet sparks fly but Rowan needs to show there is more to him than the grumpy exterior before Bonnie will entertain letting him get close…
This is an entertaining, hilarious read but it’s the love and the passion that take this book to another level. I fell hard and fast for Rowan, I adored Bonnie and Dakota and I highly recommended everyone joins this journey to The Highlands, all we need now is the audible edition.
Besties Bonnie and Dakota venture to the quaint town of Corsekelly, where they’ll run a coffee shop for 6 months. Of course, everything starts off on a rough note, including meeting the coffee owner’s son, Rowan - stoic, grumpy, and sarcastic. While Rowan tries to help with the coffee shop, fireworks explode between him and Bonnie and this fun slow burn of an enemies-to-lovers romance takes flight.
Rowan’s grumpalicious character is an interesting one to delve into. “𝘗𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵, 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱. 𝘏𝘦’𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘴𝘰.” Bonnie, at first, was super annoying but then I got to know her, especially with her friendship with Dakota. I loved their bond and I understood the drama that transpired between them. I loved the quote, “𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵.” I also discovered characteristics of Bonnie that I resonated with: proud, defensive stubborn.
I need to give a shout out to Dakota. Though her romance with Isla wasn’t the main story, it was dang heartfelt. She’s still struggling with her first love and what she went through made me want to fight for and fight with her. Both Dakota and Bonnie have their share of “brokenness” and I loved how their new friends embraced them and helped in their road to finding themselves.
To me, Meghan Quinn’s “The Highland Fling” is more than just a romance with humour, witty banter, and swoony talk, but it’s also a story about taking a chance when hope seems lost, discovering yourself, and valuing your time.
Thanks to Netgalley and Montlake for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
5 Kilty McGrumpyshire Stars!
Meghan Quinn blows it out of the park again with an absolutely outstanding read, set in the Highlands of Scotland. If you are looking for laugh out loud escapades, screaming goats, hairy coo's, swoony Scottish heroes, and sassy American girls then this one's for you.
"I think you're trouble..."
"...I think you might be right."
Rowan and Bonnie's story had it all and then some in spades. I loved the locale, the secondary characters and the fact that both our leads are a little battered and bruised from their pasts and the hand that life has dealt them so far.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough, Megan always delivers and I always kick myself for waiting so long to start something of hers because as soon as I do I am hooked!
4.5🌟
Small town romances are seriously rocking it for me atm and this with the grumpy/sunshine mix was a recipe for another Quinn winner.
Meghan painted a beautiful picture with the location of this story. It's made me want to go and visit Scotland so bad.
Bonnie and Rowan were brilliant. Even with all her self doubt and her constant chatter I really liked Bonnie. She just wants to find her place in the world and know where she belongs. Meghan always makes her characters feel so real. Rowan really was a grumpy so and so but I loved how these 2 were together they bounced off each other and pushed each others buttons and the tension! Omg I could have shouted at my kindle! Loved the story line, great characters and as usual Meghan left me a mixture of crying and laughing.
Meghan Quinn is quite the storyteller which is why I always pick up anything she writes. Her characters are quirky, charming, realistic, and utterly hilarious! In this one, Quinn does something a little different when her female lead heads to Corsekelly in the Scottish Highlands. Mixing in a grumpy hero and an eccentric heroine, readers are bound to be laughing the whole way through just like I did. Some may find Bonnie to be a little off putting as she’s a bit immature but let me tell you now that she grows tenfold throughout the novel. The immaturity isn’t exactly what it looks like as Bonnie isn’t the most centered woman and has issues of her own. I think readers will agree that her aloofness is much more than it appears to be.
If you enjoy an enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy and even the “fish out of water” trope then this is the book for you. I’ve been a huge fan of the authors novels and every single one comes highly recommended from me because they are an absolute delight!

My heart is so full right now!!! A broody hero and a quirky heroine. All the banters made their relationship even better. I laughed, swooned, cried so hard.
Bonnie and her friend, Dakota, went to Scotland to work at a coffee shop to get away from all the problems that they've been facing. Dakota went through a bad break up with her girlfriend. As for Bonnie, she agreed to go with Dakota to find herself. She still haven't find her purpose, and was hoping that she'd be able to in Scotland. There she met Rowan, and boy I shipped them so hard. Lol
It was definitely a slow burn, BUT it works for this story. They became friends first before getting into a relationship. I so love this story. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended.
If Scotland wasn't already on my bucket list, this newest story from the remarkable Meghan Quinn would definitely be put on the top now.
You can feel the heart, heat and humor in this story, a signature of Ms. Quinn and also what makes her writing talent shine. This story is going to give you all the feels! I laughed, cried and swooned throughout this tale.
This is Rowan and Bonnie's tale, but it's so much more. Their chemistry was amazing and I loved the way that they pushed each other's buttons. Bonnie is struggling to find her place in the world and Rowan is trying to adjust and live the way that he thinks his family wants him to. To read how their relationship grew and bloomed was fantastic.
This is a story of friendships, family and coming to terms with choices made. It's also about trying to figure out your place in the world. I absolutely loved the little town of Corkskelly and all of its inhabitants. I loved the sense of community. I loved the whole world that Ms. Quinn created with this story, from Fergus to the Boaby Stone and everything in between!
This story is in the running for my "Best of 2021 Reads"!
Highland fling is hands down my favorite summer read this year. Bonnie and Rowan. Take perfect mix of quirky and sexy as throw a little Scottish brogue in the mix and you have a winner
Oh, how I love a Meghan Quinn rom-com. I know I’m gonna get a delicious hero -in this case, one with a swoony accent. I’m going to get fun banter, some amazing secondary characters, and some sizzling steam. The Highland Fling did not disappoint. Rowan was my favorite, his grumpy exterior protecting a generous heart. Bonnie grew on me. We see her grow and find herself through the course of the book, but she starts off kind of abrasive and immature. I loved all the townspeople, Fergus the goat, and of course, the hairy coos. A fantastically funny, sweet and emotional story that I really enjoyed.
My new favorite book by Meghan Quinn! Another great romantic comedy that had me laughing out loud like a crazy person. More than once, I did tear up. I love when an author can make me laugh like crazy and then have moments when I teared up. Bonnie & Rowan had terrific chemistry and banter. I loved going on their journey.
I can’t wait to see where Meghan Quinn will take her readers next!
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
I love a great Meghan Quinn Rom-Com. Add in hot, kilted Scots and I'm completely besotted. I saw an ad on FB not all that long ago along the same lines as the ad that brought Bonnie and Dakota to Scotland in the first place. I'd actually thought of doing this (although the ad was for a coffee shop in Ireland but I digress). Now, if I'd known that I'd run into the cast of lovely people (and yes Hot Scots in kilts) of Corsekelly, I would have done it in a heartbeat. I actually want to visit this quaint village/town despite the fact that I'm sure it is made up but in any case, even Fergie intrigues me. Back to the rom-com part though. The banter between Bonnie and Rowan is amazingly fun and yes, I DID find myself talking in a messed up accent (in my head of course). The hate/love between them is just mesmerizing but above all that, the love of the people for it's town is even more so. There are difficult relationships and difficult pasts to overcome including relationships with one's self that tends to damage self-esteem with doubts. In the end, I did curse Meghan because I wasn't supposed to cry but I spent several chapters tearing up and sniffling (and while I'd like to blame PMS, it was just pretty emotional when the characters are finding themselves faces with truths they'd rather not deal with). GREAT story!
5 star review of The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn
From the first chapter to the last I was hooked on the story that Meghan Quinn wove. Bonnie St James is at a crossroads, having recently lost her third job, so when her best friend Dakota stumbles across a help wanted add to run a coffee shop in Corsekell, in the highlands of Scotland, they jump at the chance. That decision is about to change Bonnie’s life in ways she never imagined.
I have a new book boyfriend as I fell hard and fast for Rowan MacGregor, he ticked all the boxes for me. There is so much more to him than what he allows to show underneath his grumpy exterior and sparks fly whenever he and Bonnie encounter one another.
Could Bonnie and Rowan be what each other needs to become whole? As their fiery relationship explodes, the passion becomes too hard to ignore. There were numerous laugh out loud moments, so many that my family though I was crazy. I adore stories set in small towns and since this one is set in a small village in Scotland I was all in, particularly since the secondary characters were so quirky and endearing.
This book is a little gem and I for one can't wait to listen to this one on audio. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.
Cute romance between Bonnie and Rowan!
Californian Bonnie St. James needs to find her calling after getting fired from her third job before being homeless, so she agreed to go with her friend Dakota to run a coffee shop in Corsekelly, Scotland for six months while the owners were gone. Slight problem, they never told their son grumpy Rowan MacGregor that they were leaving until it was too late, but meeting Bonnie would take a lot to change his mind.
If you like enemies to lover books or a fish out of water type of romance because Bonnie wasn’t ready for Scotland and Rowan didn’t know what to do with this clueless American that wanted to run his parent’s coffee shop, but he did think she was pretty!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Highland Fling was an enemies to lovers romance that takes place in the charming town of Coarsekelly, Scotland and it was highly enjoyable!
Bonnie finds herself without a job, close to being evicted and suddenly single. She's never felt lower than she does at this point and that is when her best friend, Dakota, sees an ad for two people to live abroad and run a coffeehouse for six months. At first Bonnie isn't sure it's something they should do, but soon enough they are packing their bags and jumping at the chance.
Once they arrive in Scotland, they learn that the couple that owns the coffeehouse will be going away for several months and their son, Rowan, who is the town handyman, will be overseeing things while they are gone. Bonnie and Rowan don't exactly get along when they first meet, but is it because they really don't like one another or is it because the sexual tension between them could be cut with a knife?! Will these two ever see eye to eye?
This was a departure from the books I've been reading lately and it was welcome. I enjoyed being transported to a different country, one that I have relatives from, and it made me want to visit there even more than I already wanted to. Overall, I really enjoyed this story!

4 Stars for this cute rom com!
This is a quirky romance that had me laughing at the situations Bonnie would get herself in ... what a klutz! Then there's Rowan ... who wouldn't love a burly Scotsman even if he doesn't wear a kilt and is quite a grump. There are some quirky characters in the town and they just add to the story. Although this is a comedy ... there are some serious situations in this story.
Bonnie and Dakota need a change. So they answer an ad to run a coffee shop in the highlands of Scotland for six months. This will give them the time to take a good look at their lives and see where they want to go. When Bonnie meets Rowan (the son of the coffee shop's owners) she doesn't like him at all ... he's rude and grumpy. Rowan can't believe that his parents didn't tell him about going away for six months and hiring two Americans to look after the coffee shop. And when he meets Bonnie, he wonders if his parent's sanity is intact for hiring her. You know that fine line between love and hate ... well Bonnie and Rowan are about to cross it.
