Oh my word I loved this book!! I laughed my behind through the majority of this one!!! This was me and my best friend written into a book! I loved the friendship between Bonnie and Dakota! Then there is Rowan. If you love grumps he will be right up your alley! The chemistry between Bonnie and Rowan is off the charts! I loved watching their relationship grow! I will warn you you will find yourself laughing one second and then boom you are catching all the feels. Meghan Quinn did an amazing job of setting up this book! You felt like you were in Scotland and were members of this little town. The side characters were just as great as the main characters and you will become just as attached to them!! I would love to see the twins get a book! I was not ready for this book to end and the epilogue left me wanting more…in a good way! I absolutely recommend this book!
Received a arc for a honest review.
This was a great book about finding yourself, friendship, Scotland, and love. Yes, it was about all those things. And even though Bonnie and Rowan are the main couple, her friend fell in love with her own person right alongside them. So it's a twofer.
Bonnie is pretty off the wall. She definitely says and does things not everyone would, and she loves to push Rowan's buttons, just like he does to her. The back and forth is entertaining, and they ended up being so good together. I love the little town they're in and its people. This book made me laugh and cry. I loved it.
Meghan Quinn is one of my favorite authors and this book is no exception!! It was such a fun quick read and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
This was a (mostly) light, fun read. I questioned whether I would enjoy it towards the beginning because Bonnie’s character just felt a bit too over the top and the humor seemed to be trying a bit too hard to be funny. I think it got much better as it went along. I liked all the characters and enjoyed the chemistry between Bonnie and Rowan. There was possibly some problematic behavior, especially with Rowan (weirdly keeping his pottery a secret and then full blast yelling at Bonnie until she was scared), but as long as it’s portrayed as a one time occurrence, it’s probably not too terrible. I really enjoyed when the book got more serious towards the end, and found it very moving. Overall I enjoyed this book and would probably check out other books by the same author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Publishing for providing me access to this eARC for my honest opinion!
This was a delight! Leaving Los Angeles behind, Bonnie and her friend accept a job position in Corsekelly, Scotland for six months to manage an outdated coffee shop.
Not only was Corsekelly a charming setting, but the grumpy-vs-sunshine banter between Bonnie and Rowan—the local repairman and son of the coffee shop owners—was hilarious. Beginning as enemies, I loved seeing them slowly reveal their attraction while completely annoying each other along the way.
I’ll admit that Bonnie was a very obnoxious heroine, but her attempt to hide the vulnerability of feeling lost in life, like she has no purpose, really hit me. Her diehard love of cake and tendency to overshare her thoughts made me laugh on more than one occasion, too.
With his own insecurities, including a damaged relationship with his father, Rowan was a grump with a broken spirit—my weakness! This was a romantic comedy at its core, but it also had a lot of touching moments. Another win for me from Meghan Quinn!
I didn't like the writing style, I had never read anything by this author before so I didn't know going into it. I just didn't like to feel like the character's talking to me within the story. The main character was obnoxious and annoying.
Rating: 4.5 Stars
With nothing to lose, Bonnie and Dakota pack up and head to Scotland for six months. In those six months, Bonnie hoped to find her purpose and direction in life, but she may be in store for so much more.
This book was such a delightful mix of humor, romance, and friendship. I can always rely on Quinn for lots of laughs, but what really elevated this book for me was the more emotional moments. People! There were tears! There were times where I was practically blubbering. No lie!
I cannot recall relating to a book heroine so hard either. Bonnie lost her boyfriend, her job, her apartment. She was untethered and searching for some direction and purpose. It really warmed my heart to see her confidence and belief in herself grow as she found something to be passionate about. I also admired her enthusiasm for cake. I could never eat as much as she did, but I share her love for tasty cake. Speaking of cake, can we talk about those baked goods? Yum! Tattie scones, Dundee cake, shortbread, butteries — my mouth was watering, and I was googling recipes.
Bonnie and Rowan were quite a match too. It was a classic sunshine-grump pairing with Rowan really playing up that grumpy hero role. He was a complicated man. He had lost a lot, and in the name of familial obligations, he lost a bit of himself. He experienced quite a personal journey during this book too. I didn’t realize how important it was for me to see him mend those fences and fulfill his own desires, but I was so pleased with all the progress he made.
I was a fan of the setting as well. It was great learning a bit about Scotland, but it was even better meeting the residents of Corsekelly. The heart of this place was its people, and each one was quite special. We got to spend a lot of time with the twins and their sister Isla, as they were very close friends of Rowan’s. I adored them all. I mean, the twins filmed training videos of them hurling logs and whatnot just wearing kilts. Color me intrigued. Let’s just say, I wouldn’t be sad if Quinn wanted to bring us back to Corsekelly for their stories.
Overall: This was signature Quinn. Lots of big comedic moments highlighted with some intense emotional ones. I cried quite a bit towards the end, but I am glad to say, my sad tears morphed to happy tears.
The Highland Fling is another outstanding story from Meghan Quinn! I loved this small-town, countryside setting that she created for Bonnie and Rowan's story. I loved the development of both characters, how they were both going through things separately, but also together. The two of them were quite the opposites, but they were absolutely perfect when they were with one another. I also really enjoyed the secondary storyline of Bonnie's friendship with Dakota, and how she was also discovering something about herself in Scotland. It really fit seamlessly within the main story between Rowan and Bonnie, and I love how that all played out too. The whole story was truly fantastic and I enjoyed every minute of it!
This was such a fun, cute read with a bit of self discovery and emotional healing that was an enjoyable from the start. In this story we meet Bonnie and Rowan and their story was hot and entertaining.
Bonnie, a newly unemployed and soon to be homeless goes to Scotland with her friend, after answering a help wanted ad, to do some self discovery and examine her life and what she wants to do with it. She was not looking for love and was unsure what to her next step would be when she returned to the States. She dives into revamping the coffee shop to make it better for the couple that own it and finds some inner confidence, a circle of new friends and a life that she has developed that she does not want to leave.
Rowan, is a grumpy towns person and the son of the coffee shop owners that is blindsided by the appearance of Bonnie and her friend. He has some guilt over the loss of his brother and a rift with his father about his true passion in life but remains doing a job that he does not like as a way of being loyal to his family and town. He gets off on the wrong foot with Bonnie and does everything that he can to stay away from her while hiding his feelings but is unsuccessful in the process. In the end, some secrets are revealed and Rowan needs to learn to deal with them, his guilt from the past and forge ahead a future that he can be happy with.
This pair were well written and once they gave into their attraction had chemistry that was off the charts. The banter between them was funny and kept me wanting for more. Watching the characters grow throughout the story was like watching a transformation as well as an awakening for the pair as to what they want for and what they learned about themselves. I also enjoyed the supporting characters and hope that some of them can have their story told as well. Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to others.
Oh, Ms. Quinn has done it again!!! I want to start this review by saying this: I was a little unsure of my feelings for Bonnie; but, as the story progressed, I started to see why she was the way she is.
I have to talk about Rowan now; I adored him!!! His snarky-ness, combined with Bonnie’s wit and her own snarky responses were brilliant! All the supporting characters brought their own feelings/personalities to the story that just enhanced it.
And I’m going to bring out my tear rating, because….I teared up!
Tear rating: 💧💧💧
I loved this book! I went through ALL.THE.FEELS. throughout this read. It even brought a tear or two to my eye. (Not to worry, it's not a bawling kind of book) This was such a fantastic story. I was here for Bonnie's journey with her bestie, Dakota. These two have nothing holding them back, so a jaunt to Scotland doesn't interrupt much in their lives. It was fun living vicariously through them. Meghan had me cracking up at their reactions to the Scottish slang and driving on the other side of the road. But one of my favorite things was the hairy coo! (Google it, totally worth it!) I felt like I was in Scotland with them, seeing the sights and the people. Plus, I enjoyed the immediate hate of one another between Bonnie and Rowan. Rowan is a bit of a loner and to say he's grumpy is an understatement. But I liked how Bonnie burrowed under his skin and they soon become friends. I was here for all the ups and downs this trip brought the girls and I ADORED the relationship between Rowan and Bonnie. I couldn't read this book fast enough and I can't recommend it enough!
The Highland Fling, is super hilarious with a little bit of seriousness thrown in every once in a while. Beware the ending made me cry. I love a happy ending.
I really enjoyed this book from Meghan! Bonnie and Dakota are stuck in a California not really enjoying their lives when they see an online ad to take a cafe in small town Scotland. This book had me laughing in so many parts because it was so funny. Can Bonnie and grumpy Rowan ever get along or will they be doomed to have to coexist despite being in close contact with one another? I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it!
Ugh give me a grumpy hero any day!! Rowan was a everything I love in a hero and the setting was perfect. I went through all the emotions while reading this book and it just solidified Meghan Quinn as one of my top favorite authors. At this point, I’ll read anything she writes.
No other author can deliver a romance that packs an inspirational punch quite like Meghan Quinn.
Do you know what else she does that no other can compare to? Awkward characters.
Bonnie was full of self doubt and questioning many aspects of her life, and although not for the same reasons but I found that many of her inner thoughts and worries were ones I have had myself.
Bonnie was my favorite type of heroine, awkward, sassy, but she was so much more than that. There were times she became so immersed in her own head that she missed what was happening around her but she was never malicious or uncaring, she was actually incredibly sweet, just a tad pushy at times.
Rowan was grumpy, and when he and Bonnie meet they immediately get off on the wrong foot which makes for some highly entertaining banter between them. He has reasons for why he acts the way he does, and Bonnie brings him a sense of peace with her craziness that he hasn’t had in a long time.
As always, Meghan Quinn delivers a romance that’s much more than a romance. Bonnie’s story is much more than her fling in the Highlands, it’s about a woman recognizing her worth, embracing the new depths of herself as she uncovers them, reflecting on who she was, and finding who she’s meant to be.
Rowan’s grumpiness was understandable and the pain in his heart was tangible, my chest ached and tears poured down my face. His journey was more than falling in love with a sassy American. He found a way to heal the battered pieces of his heart and embrace what was in front of him.
Meghan Quinn delivered a love story, alongside 2 characters that were on very separate personal journeys. The characters each showed immeasurable personal growth which also solidified their relationship starting on a solid foundation.
Their chemistry was palpable from the start with their banter and searing glances upping the intensity until this tension fueled slow-burn finally ignited.
Meghan Quinn did a beautiful job of bringing Scotland to life on the pages. An enthralling blend of intoxicating chemistry, a grumpy swoony hero with an accent, a sweet sassy heroine, an epic slow-burn, all the feels, from laugh out loud witty banter to having to stop reading to wipe tears, and as an added bonus a whole slew of Scottish slang that I will be using.
Another hilarious book by this author. It's set in Scotland, so there's also that added attraction. Oh, and the Hero is a grumpy, private Scot who doesn't show his emotions... other than that angry face he's so good at. The Heroine is an American who is sassy, fierce and quite quirky, who swings into town looking for a fresh start. While she finds him attractive, his gruff behavior isn't all that welcoming. While this is a romance, much of the core of the book is her trying to find her self-worth and her place in the world. There is much humor and as with most books by this author... that devastating breakup with brings all the emotion. There is also some emotional elements that have nothing to do with the romance. It's a fun, well crafted story that is easy and quick to read. Alternating between POVs.
*I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley.
Where do I begin with this heartfelt, comedic, absolute perfect story that I didn’t even know I needed right now? We have humor, we have heartache, we have yummy Scot’s and a lost soul lass.
Rowan MacGregor is our yummy but grumpy Scot. Dear lord this man is everything you want in a book boyfriend. A man who tells it how it is, but cares and protects with every bone in his body. I don’t know how many times I found myself swooning over things he says or does. He has all the charm to blow your kilt off!
Bonnie St. James - she’s one-sixteenth Scottish don’t you know - and is our loss soul lass. I loved watching her find her way and her confidence along the way. Rowan played a huge part in encouraging her ideas and helping her grow throughout the story. The things that she says and does, had me laughing out loud at times.
This story is touching in parts that makes you want to reach in and hug not only Rowan and Bonnie but also the other side characters. I especially loved the parts where Rowan took the time to woo Bonnie. Lord knows he wooed me enough with his sweet gestures and kind words! He’s the patience to her chaos - the positivity she needs to flourish.
While reading the story, I FELT how perfect of a match these two were for each other. From the beginning enemies to friends part to them starting to fall for each other, I get this feeling over me that feels the same as when you fit two of the right puzzle piece together. Perfect!
In the end, MQ makes me want to go to Scotland! I want to meet the screaming goat, the hairy coos, and see the beautiful landscape. But I suppose for now, I’m going to have to settle for adding this paperback now to my collection after reading the ebook. A touching story that you need in your life!
First off if you don’t read this story with a scottish accent rolling around in your head…what’s wrong with you? Joke..im kidding…bit in all seriousness, with Scottish characters you cant really help yourself. I know I couldn’t.
This book had me in fits of laughter in certain parts and tears were streaming down my face.
It also made me long to travel! Everything about this book was absolutely wonderful. So much heart and soul in it. Such an amazing heartwarming and beautiful storyline that hooked me from the start. I honestly didn’t want it to end and I also am going to be using some of the words that made me laugh. You’ll know which ones when you read it. Haha!
When best friends apply for a job in a small town Scotland, Bonnie and Dakota arent quite prepared for what happens. Especially when they meet grumpy Rowan, oh boy, that man, I tell you!
The townsfolk, the small town feel and the characters definitely struck a huge chord with my emotions. A highly comedic story that also had some really touching moments that made me tear up.
An Absolutely outstanding story that makes me long to travel to Scotland even more. Thank you to the author for writing such an interesting and entertaining story that was a highlight of my week.
Hands down a definite favourite read of 2021!

A sweet romance that will give you the giggles. It is a solid read for any romance lover.
I really enjoyed this one! A great display of the grump/sunshine trope. The main characters had such fun banter and a great connection! I feel like it had the perfect amount of tension where it didn’t move too quickly but it always wasn't dragged out too long.
This book takes place in a small town in Scotland and I want to visit!! I loved the camaraderie throughout the small town and how everyone was so friendly with each other.
This was more than a romance for me! It touched on sensitive topics such as family, loss, self discovery, and so much more.
Absolutely loved, highly recommend!
