Many thanks to Netgalley, Stackpole Books, and Woolly Wormhead for receiving and ARC in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy.

For those of us in the knitting world, Wooly Wormhead is a recognized name in the industry. She is known for her unique hat shapes, beautiful yarns and gorgeous design. Her knitting pattern skills are impeccable. For those of you who aren’t familiar with her work, this book is a treasure. Wooly Wormhead was decorated with the British Crafts Award in 2018. She describes herself as a hat architect. This is what she has to say about hats

“Hats are fascinating. They are relatively quick to knit, but they are also endlessly versatile. I think of my Hat designs as sculptures and 3D objects. I build them in my head, then contracts them with my hands.” From her website woolywormhead.com

What you will find is an amazing array of beautiful hats is all shapes and sizes. There are patterns for women, men and children. The patterns are extremely well written. There are charts as well as written instructions. She has a skills required section before each pattern with a reference to later chapters where she has explanations of different techniques like provisional cast on or how to join live stitches. Each pattern is written as if you are having a direct conversation with her, like sitting in her class and she explains each part of what you are doing and why.

What you will find in her book that you won’t find anywhere else (other than the beautiful designs) is a whole section on the basics of knitting a hat. Here are some of the issues she discusses - the right hat for every head, how much ease, the thing with hard and even takes into consideration and writes about hats and glasses. I haven’t seen anything like it!

In case I’m not being clear, I love this book. There are many wearable designs and each hat is a work of art. Also just going through one pattern of hers is an education itself. If you want to knit hats, this book is a must have.

I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and NetGalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This book of hat patterns is gorgeous and easy to read. Not intended for the beginner knitter, but a novice knitter would learn so much about construction and technique from this book.

Beautifully photographed and expertly edited.

5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.

There are a lot of hat patterns and knitting instruction in this book and if you don't have anything like it then you might like this book very much. I found the instructions a bit hard to follow at times, though.

One of this things this book goes into at length is sizing, including discussion of negative ease
and why one size does not fit all. I learned that I have probably been making hats too big, by not considering negative ease. Using ribbing for the band helps with sizing, but still I may be measuring wrong.

I like to work hats in the round. Many of these are worked flat and then bound up with kitchener. It probably gives interesting hat designs, but it seems to be a pain in the ass to work. I can deal with kitchener for 12 st at the end of a sock, but not 96 st up the side of a hat. So, I would probably not make most of these patterns.

The men's hats look like skull caps and I would not make any of them. Some of the kids' hats look fun and interesting. But maybe not worth the effort in the complicated stitch patterns unless the hats will be passed on.

I really liked the look of the hat called "Infilare", but I could not understand the pattern description for reaching down five rows to the wrong side and then knitting from the back and front needle, all while working in the round. I know how to tuck and don't think it is very hard once you understand the mechanics, so I'm pretty sure that the instructions were less clearly written than they might have been. If there were a tutorial for the 'tucked' pattern used for Infilare, I would like to see it. But I can't do this pattern from the written instructions.

Given the large amount of info on line and the ability to adapt stitches and patterns and colors to make an infinite number of hats for a finite number of friends and family, I would not pay money for this book of hat patterns.

Knit Hats by Woolly Wormhead was a fantastic knitting book.

I loved the different sections, the patterns were easy to follow, I really think everyone could find a hat in this book that they love, and the photos were wonderful as well. I also feel this book is wonderful for advanced beginners as well as those more experienced knitters. I feel you could work you way through this book picking up a new skill every new hat you make.

I see there are more books by Wormhead and I cannot wait to get my hands on them! I suggested this to my library.

I received an eARC from Rowman and Littlefield through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.

This is a great pattern book of hats. The patterns are probably for a more experienced knitter as there are lots of colors and pattern changes. There are 22 hats, 12 for women, 5 for men and 5 for kids. Also tips for choosing a hat, what yarns to use and how to care for them. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I was thinking about knitting myself a new hat for the winter, and I liked another pattern by the same designer, but I didn't care for a single pattern. It's obviously a matter of personal taste, so I'd flip through it and see for yourself. For me, all of the hats were too close fitting, more a beanie style, and had none of the charm of their more slouchy hats that I'd seen before.

I'll keep looking for the perfect hat pattern for me.

This is a collection of more advanced knitted hats. I’m a beginner at knitting (started just a few months ago) and still find the designs a bit too complicated for my current skillset.

Also, multiple hats in the book require sock-weight yarn (thinner ply). Currently I prefer working with worsted weight or bulkier yarn so that I can finish projects faster. Knitting projects take much longer to finish than crochet.

The hats are beautiful, though! I will revisit this book when I’ve improved my knitting skills.

This book has a lot of different types of hats that you don't usually see. They are divided up into Hers, His and Children. There is a section in the back for techniques as well as how to determine what sizes to do. Most are using DK or worsted weight but there are a couple for fingering and sport weight as well. I really fell in love with the children's hats. I love the ear flaps on a couple of them.

Nice color photos and instructions seem very complete and easy to work with.

I hadn't heard of this designer before, but I am super impressed with her designs. There are lots of interesting features and flourishes that set the hat apart from the same-y stuff you find on ravelry. Many of the techniques are above my current skill level, but I am going to persevere on the Azula pattern and maybe be done by this winter!

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

I knit a few of Woolly Wormhead hats before and always enjoyed the patterns. Many of the hats are knitted side to side, which is quite unusual. There is a lot of interesting twists and turns in the designs, and they never look boring. The patterns are clearly written and there are lots of photos of finished hats to see what is going on. There are written instructions and color charts. I suggest checking out ravelry to see how other people did the patterns.
I liked the chapter at the end on how hats fit and how to wear them with different hairstyles. There are also step by step instructions with photos on more difficult techniques used in the patterns

I received a free digital copy of the book from NetGalley

What a lovely selection of hats. There are designs for every skill level, with unique construction to keep the experienced knitter interested. Although the book is organized by gender and age, these hats are for anyone.

There are lovely photos and good instructions. A great addition to a hat knitter's library.

I received an ARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley.

Knit Hats with Woolly Wormhead is a collection of stylish and well designed hats by Ravelry designer Wooly Wormhead. Due out 1st Aug 2021 from Rowman & Littlefield on their Stackpole imprint, it's 136 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The projects are arranged thematically: for her, for him, and for kids. There are 22 complete projects in all and they are all really neat with integrated patterning and shaping in different textured techniques. The thing that struck me about the designs is how "knitterly" they are. The details are almost sculptural and there are several which have really clever integrated lace or mosaic knit details which shape the hat at the same time they provide design interest. Each of the projects has multiple pictures in color which are clear and show styling and design details clearly. Materials used are specified by yarn weight and include yardage estimates. Hints and tips are included in the patterns in text boxes. Projects also include the yarn and yardage used as pictured in the samples with specific brands listed.

In addition to the 22 designs (which have both written and charted design elements provided - the charts are at the back of the book), there are some really useful tutorial appendices. There are short primers on getting the proper fit, figuring ease, how to position and wear a hat, and several photo tutorials which in my opinion are worth the price of the book. There's one on how to graft (Kitchener) garter stitch, German short rows in garter stitch (without holes or jogs), provisional cast on, and two color Kitchener. I've been knitting for nearly 50 years at this point and until now, garter stitch grafting has defeated me. It's true that the above techniques can probably be found online, but not gathered together in one place and certainly not packaged with these clever designs. The author has also included an abbreviated links and suppliers list.

Five stars. This is a very clever and well designed collection. This would make a superlative selection for public or home library use, fibrearts guild groups, or as a wonderful gift.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
