I'm really loving this series, its a great blend of cozy mystery and more contemporary suspense/intrigue, with a little bit of hollywood drama, and a dash of classic era crime fiction. Honestly I would probably just call this a contemporary mystery since its "cozy" category limits its readers (and die hard fans of that genre may not find it "cozy" enough) so definitely a good read for fans of writers like Ruth Ware as well. **Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review!**
Evie and Margo are now renovating the Tregarrick Rock Hotel and days away from a soft opening when murder strikes the small island once again. The setting is just so great, from the Isles of Scilly with their strange blend of Brittish and Sub-tropic elements, to historical aspects and hunting for shipwrecks, to an awesome Art Deco hotel with rooms named after some of my favorite authors of the Golden Era (Christie, and Marsh among them plus George Goodchild who is one of my favorites and yet I've never read another reference to him in any books so Hannah Dennison has major brownie points for that one).
I love "manor house murders" or "stuck on an island murders" and this is a blend of both. Basically an isolated cast of known and unknown elements, including several new characters who may or may not be joining the main cast along with some ringers. Randy was the perfect wildcard who even though thoroughly modern with his investing and Iron Mans, still felt a bit like a bit of a Golden Era playboy. But I will say two characters I was definitely missing more of (they were basically cameos this time out) were Cador and Mister Tig!!!
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I loved the two sisters, Evie & Margot. They are both likable characters. My main issue I had with this was there was an inkling something was wrong at the 32% but we didn’t find our first body until 46%. Because the murder doesn’t happen until the halfway point, we don’t get to see Evie do a lot of amateur sleuthing. It happens pretty quick! The mystery was a good one and kept me guessing until the end. I thought it was cool how due to the tide schedule, they could walk out to a sunken ship and find buried treasure. The island setting alone is so fun in this book! I’m looking forward to the next installment to see what Evie and Margot are up to!!
I did not read the first book in the series, so I was a little confused and I don’t feel that this series is very “cozy.” When I picture a an island hotel off the coast of Cornwall, I don’t picture of art deco (but I love art deco so I’m not complaining), and the sisters’ opposing renovation & business ideas are frustrating. I also couldn’t figure out the sisters’ ages until I was told the unprofessional police detective with a young son was “their age,” so I’m assuming they’re in their late 30’s. Again, maybe these details were shared in the first book, but the sisters came across somewhat vaguely and really oblivious to the incredibly obvious mysteries unfolding. It’s cute enough for a cozy read with beautiful scenery and some unique characters, though. I might try reading Death at High Tide.
*update* I found the first in the series through Chirp audiobooks on sale, so I bought it and listened in a day. It does explain some things, definitely. I’m still not completely sure of their exact ages (since I found out the unprofessional police detective has had multiple marriages, so maybe not 30’s?) but I got a much better feel for the sisters and an overall picture of the island. For a “cozy” mystery, this just has a very modern feel, so I have to get used to that, but I’ll definitely read more in this series.
Danger at the Cove is the second book in this series. I have not read the first book but had no trouble following the story.
Evie and her sister Margot are preparing the Tregarrick Rock Hotel to reopen. Being an old building it needs some updates, electrical being the biggest need.
Margot's friend arrives and things seem to take a turn.
Shipwrecks, treasure, twist and turns will keep you turning pages. The island alone will keep you interested.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read this book.
A continuation of a cozy mystery series, this was a fun read. An island, two sisters, a handsome man, and murder. It’s a perfect light mystery to read.
One of Margot's old Hollywood friends arrives to Evie's surprise. With the hotel renovations coming along Evie wants Margot to tell her friend to find somewhere else to stay. Margot tells Evie that her friend has recently lost her husband and needs somewhere to grieve. With the friend's arrival comes more unexpected guests, chaos, and murder.
This is the 2nd book in the series but my first book. I was able to enjoy this book as a stand-alone as the mystery is wrapped up by the end of the book. The characters are emotional, relatable, and realistic. The mystery is full of red herrings and no shortage of suspects. I look forward to reading more of this series.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
Thank you #Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Danger at the Cove by Hannah Dennison in exchange for an honest review. Evie Mead and her sister, Margot, are renovating the Tregarrick Rock Hotel on the Isle of Scully, of the Cornish coast. A friend from Hollywood comes to visit Margot, bringing a new boyfriend. This was a fun and interesting book. I had no idea who had done what to whom. I had to look up the Isle of Scully to see where it was located and the book made me want to visit.
Evie and her sister Louise are weeks from reopening the hotel on Tregarriick Island when unexpected guests alive, bringing unanswered questions. An employee goes missing, a storm is coming and why do the lights keep going out? I am charmed by these sisters and dream of visiting their island.
Danger at the Cove is the second book in this series. I haven't read the first book, but I was able to follow the story. Margot and her sister Evie are preparing their hotel for the grand opening. An unexpected guest shows up, and while she expects first class treatment, she has a rather poor attitude.
When a body is discovered and a murder investigation begins, it seems the sisters are in for some shocking revelations.
I found parts of the book to be exciting, but other parts just seemed to drag out. I'm hoping that the next book will be even better than this one.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of Danger at the Cove.
In Danger at the Cove, the second book in a delightful cozy series by Hannah Dennison a surprise visitor makes an appearance on the island—and murder ensues. More than one. This is the second in this cozy series but it's not really your typical cozy. There is some sharp character development and some unexpected murders that keep the storyline moving forward with a bit more suspense than your average cozy. I am looking forward to book 3 and hopefully many more in the series. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Evie Mead and her sister Margot are pleased with how renovations are coming along at Tregarrick Rock Hotel. Opening day is coming soon.
But when Margot’s old friends from Hollywood, Louise, arrives unexpectedly, everything goes awry. Louise, who is supposedly in mourning for her recently deceased husband, is also demanding. Evie wishes she could send her elsewhere to stay, but Margot talks her into letting Louise remain.
When two deaths occur, one of them a staff member, Evie and Louise find the future of the hotel may be in jeopardy.
Buried treasure, a handsome Australian and events that happened before Evie and Margot ever came to the island play a part in the goings on.
I like these sisters and the other characters in the book series.
This is the second in the Island sisters cozy mystery series. While it takes place in present day there are instances of both Silver and Golden Age classics...I liked the combo of these two vibes.
The " locked room" mystery of the Silver Age vs this isolated"locked"island , hard to get onto and off of the crime scene area and the potential murderer has vanished into thin air.The Agatha Christie style Golden Age vibe is a secluded island in the place of a posh country house
I liked the cop Patty who held Hercule Poirot type meetings with all the people at the Hotel on the island. Her unorganized, but brilliant questioning techniques were actually fun.
The mystery itself was very good with an intricate and at moments heart pounding ending.i will definitely continue the series. I look forward to seeing the renovations and plans Evie and Margot have for the hotel.
I'd like to thank St.Martins Press, Minotaur books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Danger at the Cove releases on 8/17/21
This was a fun book and pretty fast read. I think it is the 2nd in the series and I didn’t read the first one and I could follow along very well with what was happening. So we have Evie Mead and her sister Margot who are renovating Tregarrick Rock Hotel which is on Tregarrick Island off the coast of England within the Isles of Scilly. Margots famous friend Louise ends up at the hotel supposedly grieving her 3rd husband dying but when she gets there she doesn’t seem that distraught but still expects the VIP treatment. She also comes with her new financial advisor Randy who she is trying to date as well as use to help finance a movie about a book she just got the rights too. Everything goes wrong when one of the employees Ollie ends up dead and then we have some buried treasure that was unearthed and shady characters all around them. This was really fun read and I had my suspicions of a couple people but did get it right at the end. So a good book and I might pick up the next book to see what happens with these sisters and the hotel.
Thanks to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
This has all the standard elements of a cozy mystery.
Interesting and entertaining.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Sisters Evie and Margot and staff are busy getting the old Tregarrick Rock hotel ready to reopen. Painting, plumbing, and electrical upgrades are in progress as the big day approaches, The last thing they need is the unexpected arrival of Margot's high-maintenance L.A. friend, Louise. Louise 's arrival is quickly followed by that of her much younger lover, Randy.
Margot and Evie clash over Louise and Randy's extravagant plans for the future of the historic 1930's hotel but early guests and arguments take a back seat when two deaths occur on the island. Crime solving wasn't on the to-do list!
Mysterious lights on the coastal path, shipwrecks with treasure, shady financial schemes and multiple suspects keep readers of this action-packed Island Sisters second mystery guessing until the end.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this newest entry in the series.
Ms. Dennison had me guessing WHODUNIT until the very end! What a great book. I love this setting, the trials and tribulations of getting this hotel going, and the characters. Definitely worth reading! I am looking forward to more in this series.
Danger at the Cove by Hannah Dennison was such a fun mystery! I loved getting to revisit Tregarrick Rock Hotel and sisters Evie and Louise! There's murder, intrigue and Hollywood scandal! I didn't see how the mystery ended coming and it had all the modern classic cozy elements! This one is the second installment in the series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand alone book!
Another fun, cozy mystery. I think I liked Book 1 better, but this is definitely an enjoyable read.
Evie and Margot, two sisters, are trying to open a hotel on a tiny island. Things definitely do not go as they had hoped, and a worker ends up being killed. There are lots of fun twists and turns and the character's relationships take some nice changes too. I love the historical elements in the book as well.
Overall a great read.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I very much enjoyed this second book of the series. I loved that it was set on an island which was somewhat isolated. The history of the island pertaining to the old ships that sank just added to the intrigue. I enjoyed the characters which all had their own personalities. There were so many twists and turns in relationship to the characters that it kept the reader wanting to continue reading to find out what would happen next . Evie and her sister, Margot were perfect as the main characters that ran the Inn which helped bring all the characters into the story. I hope that the author does more with the history of the ships and the relationship between Cador and Evie in the next of the series. I look forward to reading the next one
Thanking you NetGallery, St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for this ARC.
Two sisters are somewhat competently fixing up an old hotel to reopen it when murder happens. That is the basic concept of the second book in this cozy series. Of course, there are a group of reoccurring characters and some probably one-time appearances. Some of the characters were charming and others annoying, but that is life for you. I did think the police chief came off as somewhat unprofessional but at the same time was good at her job.
This had some classic, but there are reasons they are classic, events including the appearance of a legendary sunken ship. Then there was the suspenseful ending: a small group of people in an isolated location with a killer. A storm is brewing and the lights goes out… Very effective and definitely wretches up the tension.
I enjoyed it, but depending on your taste you might be amused or annoyed at the mistakes the sisters sometimes make in the renovation process but I think it is believable if you are new to this type of undertaking (which I have absolutely no experience in). The mystery was solid with satisfying twists and a good ending.
But what I think will stay with me the most is a scene when because of a rare extreme tide, several characters walk out to a sunken ship along what is usually the covered sea floor. The amount of plastic and other man-made junk that littered the ground made an impact. The writer was not making some sort of environmental statement just a scene that fit in with the tone of the rest of the book. But that probably is what made it all the more impactful.
