This was a festive Adult Romance that is perfect for Christmas time! I definitely recommend trying it!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher.
This book, while not bad, has a very strange issue and I can't place what it is. It took place in dual timelines, jumping from present day to a few decades ago, but it never felt like it really got going, and if it wasn't for the references, I would have no idea what time period this book is in. It's almost so low stakes and fluffy that there's nothing to really grip onto. The author is clearly good at what she does but the main couple lacks chemistry and I couldn't find myself interested in their romance. They both felt a little drab to me. Also there's a lot of references to Eloise in here, which made sense for the story, but as someone who never read it and had to google what Eloise was, I felt very lost. I think this will only appeal to a very specific market and barely to anyone outside of America.
If you are looking for a cute Hallmark-ish novel to read this holiday, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! This storyline has a few twists that keep you interested. "A Magical New York Christmas" has a way of making you fall in love with the Christmas season a bit more. There isn't a lot of depth with the characters, making this a sweet, light read for the holiday season.
This book is basically a Hallmark Christmas movie in novel form.
It's cute and predictable, it's sweet, there are a few cute little twists, but it's really just all about falling in love at Christmastime. I enjoyed the flashbacks to the Eloise books which I loved growing up, but familiarity with those books isn't necessary to enjoy this one. The characters don't have too much depth, but everyone has the best intentions and they're perfectly likeable - sweet !
All in all, A Magical New York Christmas is a lovely book if you're in the mood for something simple, heartwarming and christmassy.
Sabrina Post is an aspiring writer. She enters the Plaza Hotel to be a ghost writer for Grayson Westcott who is a famous art dealer, but there is more to him than his current job description. While at the hotel, she runs into this guy who intrigues her, but the reader of the book knows the truth behind this guy that she is spending her time with. Ian is at the Plaza hotel with a college friend who has also become weirdly his employer as he works for a foundation that is in the name of his friend's last name as he is an European Lord.
Both Ian and Sabrina don't know the truth about each other and this goes on throughout the whole book and while that got a bit old for me, it was entertaining. Their story had great ups and downs and was quite the journey throughout the book. While there may have been a moment or two where I sweetly rolled my eyes as I knew the truth that neither of them did, it never made me want to put the book down.
There is another storyline going on as Sabrina is meeting with Grayson and hearing his stories, so she can write his memoir. I loved how seamlessly the book moves into his stories and of course, I loved that they were labeled, so the reader knows when we are headed into the past. Grayson's stories were so great to go back in time in the Plaza hotel as he tells his story and I loved reading his origin story.
While I loved this romance book, for me it honestly could have taken place at any time of the year and I didn't see as much holiday seasonal spirit as I would have hoped. There was some chatter about the holidays and some activities, but when I read a holiday romance, I like the holiday cheer packed in every page!
This book missed the mark for me. The characters had zero chemistry, across all timelines, and the series of interactions between the various pairs were very choppy. The only redeeming part of this book was the Eloise/1950s-1960s timeline.
I received an advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
The title really says it all! A sweet Christmas romance with the mistaken identity trope playing a large role. Not the best holiday romance I have ever read but still enjoyable and definitely gave the reader the feeling of being in New York in December.
I've always wanted to go to New York City for Christmas, and this book brought that Big Apple "magic." I enjoyed it very much.
I absolutely adored this holiday story! It was sweet and cozy and everything I want in a holiday romance. I definitely recommend adding it to your list!
Thanks to St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of A Magical New York Christmas by Anita Hughes.
If you're a fan of Eloise and The Plaza, then this is a perfect holiday book set in New York City at the Plaza in the week between Christmas and New Year!
Sabrina is a freelance writer who has agreed to help ghost write a memoir for a famous art dealer Grayson Westcott. The position comes with a suite at the Plaza for a week and Sabrina can't believe her luck. She feels like Eloise, her favorite children's book character! Grayson shares stories of his life, including when he was a butler at the Plaza in the 1950s and was the butler for Kay Thompson, the author of the Eloise books! One night Sabrina meets Ian, who is also staying at the Plaza and sparks fly...
I was all about the Kay Thompson and Eloise parts of the story when Grayson was recounting his life! The modern romance between Sabrina and Ian was sweet. While I don't love big misunderstandings I did still think they were a cute couple.
Did I smile at cheesy things? Sure. Did I get that holiday movie feel as I read? Absolutely, because holiday movies. But it was a very saccharine book that I had trouble suspending by disbelief for.
This is a wonderful book!!!
I loved it!!
Sabrina is a ghostwriter. Grayson is a personal secretary to a Lord.
Mistaken identities add to this entertaining read.
I loved the references to Kay Thompson (author of the Eloise books). And the setting of the Plaza, well, it was another character in the book.
I’ll be looking up all of Anita Hughes previous books. Thankfully, there are several. So i should be ok until she releases a new book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an arc in exchange for my honest review.
A wonderfully magical holiday story set, of course, in New York at the Plaza hotel, an iconic fairy tale setting in its own right. Sabrina is a ghost writer staying at the Plaza writing the memoirs of an art dealer to the stars. His humble beginnings provide a secondary timeline and sub-plot to the primary storyline that, for me, was actually more wonderful. This storyline revolves around his time as a butler to Kate Thompson, author of the Eloise novels, the precocious little girl who lived at the Plaza. But, naturally, this is a love story, a sweet romance and Sabrina falls in love with a Brit who also is staying at the hotel. Cross wired, miscommunication ensues because it is, after all, a holiday romance. Will there be a happily ever after? :)
This is one holiday story that I highly recommend. Enjoy!
This is told in a dual storyline and revolves around the Plaza Hotel, and was almost comical how many secrets were floating around through this little novel.
Sabrina is a ghost writer who receives the opportunity to write for Grayson Westcott, an art dealer with a vivid little history of his own. As a result she is staying at the Plaza in a beautiful suite- clearly out of her price range. While at the Plaza, she meets Ian Wentworth who is another outsider looking in, so to speak.
At times cringy, I just kept waiting on Sabrina and Ian to own up to the truth of their existence, but alas it took them a LOT longer than I’d wished.
I was perplexed for the majority of the novel as Grayson wove this story of Eloise and his life through Sabrina’s writing. In the end though, I LOVED how the storyline was tied up with a pretty, red little ribbon!! Seriously, the ending is worth it! And I would love to see a second novel come out of this one!
What a delightful read this is. I have always been enchanted by Eloise and The Plaza. And this book swept me back there. I loved the story, the characters and the ambiance. Thank you to Netgalley and Anita Hughes for allowing me to read the ARC of this lovely book.
This is charming Christmas romcom set at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. The hotel is a character in the book along with other guests, past and present. It was a quick read and very enjoyable.
Sabrina is a struggling writer who’s been hired as a ghostwriter for Grayson Westcott’s memoirs. Grayson is a well known art dealer who helps celebrities and others curate their art collections. Sabrina gets to stay at the hotel in a suite, with a butler, and can charge anything she needs to the hotel while she works on the book. It’s a dream job for a writer.
Ian Wentworth is a handsome Brit, and the secretary to his old friend Spencer, Lord Braxton. Ian manages the Braxton Foundation, and is in NYC for an exhibition of the Braxton jewels. Ian is at the bar one night with caviar that Spencer left when he meets Sabrina. They are instantly attracted to each other, but there’s an issue.
Ian told Sabrina that he was Lord Braxton, and he assumes Sabrina is a wealthy woman spending Christmas at the hotel. She wears beautiful clothes (from her roommate or borrowed from the hotel) and fits right in. Ian wants to tell her the truth about himself, but every time he tries something happens that prevents the truth from coming out.
Anita Hughes does a great job with the “mistaken identity” trope. I loved the descriptions of The Plaza, and the supporting characters are real and relatable. There are interesting flashbacks to Grayson’s story as a young man, he was a butler at The Plaza working for Kay Thompson, the author of the well known Eloise books, set at The Plaza. He has a poignant love story to tell too!
I really enjoyed this well written, delightful Christmas romance! 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I'm a sucker for Christmas books, and this one was a winner! I haven't read any of Hughes books before, but I will be looking to do so in the future.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e ARC of this book.
A magical New York Christmas where no one is who the appear to be. Fantastical
romance where everything is perfect at the end. Flashbacks that contribute to the plot but which are sometimes too long and convoluted. Interesting characters. Merry Christmas story.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the gifted copy of A Magical New York Christmas! All opinions in this review are my own.
As a struggling writer living in New York City, Sabrina will take just about any job that comes her way. When the job comes with a suite at the plaza, Sabrina can't say no. She is hired to be the ghostwriter for the memoir of Grayson Westcott, a famous art dealer.
While at the plaza, Sabrina meets Ian. Just when she starts falling for him, she finds out he's a British lord. Sabrina doesn't know how to tell him she can't actually afford to stay at the plaza. Between Christmastime at the plaza and Grayson's own love story, Sabrina allows herself to fall for Ian and figure everything else out later!
I thought it would be more difficult to read a Christmas book at the height of spooky season, but A Magical New York Christmas is so atmospheric it feels as though you are staying in the plaza too. I had to remind myself that it was still October as I was wishing for holiday lights and snow.
As much as I liked Sabrina and Ian's romance, Grayson's stole the show. I would anxiously await returning to the past to find out what happened next! In the beginning, I couldn't figure out how he fit into Sabrina's story, aside from being her boss, but all is made clear through his retelling!
Thanks to this book, I started watching Christmas movies in September this year. So heartwarming and sweet - made me want a hot cocoa and some snow!
