This is the story of a family where brother and sister are very close.
Land and his wife Candace have not known each other very long, but they got married quickly in their relationship. Candace was not aware that Lane had baggage in the form of his sister with two children.
Harper (Lanes sister) came home to find her husband dead, and possibly by his own hand. She can't believe that he would have killed himself, and is looking for who did it. She ends up moving in with Lane and Candace.
Well the sparks fly between the woman and Lane is caught in the middle.
It was a good story all in all.. and it did leave you guessing in parts of it. But some of it was like.. really??
I did enjoy reading it and it was a fast paced story!
The Sister-in-Law by Pamela Crane has all the makings of a Lifetime movie. Woman’s husband dies by his own hand (or so it seems…), so she and her children move in with her brother and his fiancée while they wait for the proceeds of the life insurance.
Harper the widow and Candace the fiancée are like oil and water, leaving poor brother Lane to play peacemaker.
And away we go, learning about Harper and Lane’s troubled childhoods, as well as that of Candace. Have you had enough drama? It’s only started, because Harper’s marriage was a doozy. Get yourself a hot mess bingo card—you’re about to fill it up. Thank you to #NetGalley and #WilliamMorrow for the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book is well written and has some characters that you won’t soon forget. Whether that is good or not is something you’ll have to figure out for yourself after you are finished with the story.
In this story, Lane and Candace are newlyweds who really haven’t known each other all that long. I suppose you could say they are a love at first sight sort of couple. However, Candace had no idea at all that Lane came with a sister that was extremely possessive with two children.
Harper, the sister-in-law, cooks and cleans and just takes care of everything. After all, her brother did help her out tremendously after her husband's eerie mysterious death. Now that she and the kids are living with her brother and his “awful” new wife Harper is determined to find out everything she can to prove she’s not what her brother thinks.
Poor Lane is smack in the middle. All he’s ever wanted was that perfect little home with a wife, children, and that happy little family you see all the time. He thought that was just what he would have with Candice until Harper showed up and her jealousies started getting in the way yet again. Choosing between his new wife and his sister could be a bloody mess though…
The idea for this book is very good. The problem I had with it is I really didn’t like certain people in it at all and you are supposed to, if not right away later, and it just didn’t happen even then. Then you may like someone and that wasn’t to be. I can’t really get into that because of spoilers but when you read this book and you get to the end you sort of stare at the pages as if you aren’t seeing what you are seeing because you 1, find it too far fetched, 2. Don’t want it to be so, or 3. Just need to accept things for what they are for a moment. I will say that this book does have a way of leaving you guessing for a good majority of it which I thought was terrific.
I would recommend giving this a chance. It’s not incredibly long and it does move along pretty fast so you’ll get from point A to point B quick enough and you’ll get to see what you think for yourself. It’s not a bad book, just could have used a little more... something.
overall, i honestly hated the writing in this book. like, i feel like nothing really happened in here that i wasn't really interested in. like, i feel like this book would have worked so much better if this book ended in murder and that i think it was just so cool to see how it all played out was just nothing that i was to interested in. and i feel like nothing really happened that i was on the edge of my seat and that i really wanted to happen. and i feel like the writing didn't really add nothing into it.
and i also really hated the characters so much. like, i feel like that wasn't something that i was into that much. like, i think it was nothing that i could really get into. like, harper was just so annoying, lane was just kind of bland, and candace was just something that i couldn't get into and i think she was just so annoying and how she worked and talked about everything. and i mean, the only thing i really liked was that we got to see the different povs and to see how different things might play out and how they are all kind of different and to see how each person was different and what they motives were. and i feel like i couldn't really get that invested in anything or any of the other characters. like, i feel like nobody was really anyone that i could really root for or that i could really want to happen.
I read this a while ago and think I enjoyed it, especially the twist and ending, but I waited too long to review it and now can’t remember anything about it. Reading Goodreads reviews to jog my memory, brb…
I do remember that I loved to hate these unlikeable characters. Lane’s sister doesn’t get along with his new bride, and they’re living together in the same home. Both characters were catty and ridiculous at times, and it was fun to read about their disagreements.
Overall, a good thriller with a great ending, but the details didn’t stick with me long-term.
This domestic thriller starts with an intriguing premise but gets bogged down until the twisty ending. The novel is told from the three perspectives of Harper, the new widow, her brother Lane, and Lane’s new wife Candace. One evening Harper comes home to discover her husband Ben dead with a suicide note next to him. She calls her brother who persuades her to stage the body as a murder so she will be able to get the insurance money. After some weeks she moves with her two children into her brother’s home, where she is surprised to find he has a new wife that he has only known for a short time. Harper and Candace despise each other, and many fights ensue. Over time the characters’ secrets are revealed and in the end all is resolved. I was somewhat interested to learn the truth, but all of the characters were extremely unlikeable.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this book. Sadly it was a miss for me. It was a bad season of housewives .... the drama was pointless.
In “The Sister-in-Law”, a family bond is challenged when Harper finds her relationship to her brother threatened by his new wife, Candace in this psychological thriller. Harper, newly widowed seeks support and an escape from her husband’s suspensive death, takes her two children to stay with her brother. Unfortunately, his new wife is not very sympathetic to Harper’s plight and is very unhappy that her husband’s sister and creepy kids have intruded on their newly wed bliss. What happened to Harper’s husband? As battle lines are being drawn between Harper and Candace, the truth of Ben’s death could endanger at least one of these women.
I will have to say, this was a miss for me. All the characters were completely unlikeable. From the start, it was very hard to sympathize with Harper. Without calling and asking her brother, she just assumes his home is hers. She’s shrill, argumentative, paranoid, and completely insulting. Then we have Candace, who’s supposed to be like a “chill hippy chick”, not so, she’s just as uptight in her own way as Harper and definitely lacks empathy. Both women are deceitful and hid dark secrets. Lane, well, he’s a doormat. Harper’s children, Elise and Jackson were horrible and in desperate need of therapy. This tale is told through the three main characters’ point of view. The plot lagged a bit in the middle and the twist, I could see a mile away. However, the story was well-written, and I found myself intrigued about Ben’s “suicide”.
Trigger warnings: implied child death and dangerous child depression and thoughts of suicide
This book was really good. It was also super creepy. I couldn't put it down and I thought about it long after I read the last page. If you like family dramas/thrillers, pick this one up.
Warning - the opening scene was so bone chilling you are not going to want to put this book down!
What follows in this tension filled thriller was an awesome fast paced read with lots of twists.
I loved the well constructed psychological/domestic thriller that was brilliantly plotted and the tension that builds up is quite palpable, just the way I love my thriller reads.
I know you will enjoy this one too!
Quite interesting story. This book is about two women at odds with each other who are related by marriage. Lane, and his sister, Harper, are very close. Things change when Lane marries Candace.
You never knew what was going to happen next as all of their lives became more and more entwined and troubled. Harper and Candace were both suffering from grief. Instead of pulling together, they were fighting for their lives!!
I enjoyed the book and was more and more surprised as the story progressed.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. I really really hate to say this, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as I expected to. I don't mind unlikeable characters but I want to be able to root for them too and I just did not want to root for any of these characters, I also felt that some parts dragged a bit. I didn't hate the book but I definitely can not say that I enjoyed it.
What an intriguing thriller tat kept you off balance until the end. Candace thinks she has the perfect husband in Lane until she meets her extremely possessive sister in law Harper. No one is who they seem and as the story progresses you could never guess what would happen. This could have been a predictable book but the characters had such nuance and the story was so well written. It’s a true thriller and had me stopping at times to catch my breath. I found this book to be highly entertaining.
Drama drama drama. This book was a bad trash TV on crack. The weird decisions every character has made, and the story they have created was bonkers.
Harper finds her husband dead due to suicide, She panics and calls her brother Lane to help her. Both make the decision that suicide means no money for Harper, they stage a murder scene. Due to the investigation, Harper runs into financial hardship, add some grief, and she invites herself and her two kids to live with Lane. Well Lane has some news too, he's newly married to Candice. A girl who seems like a gold digger, out to wrap Lane around her finger and just have a good time.
More secrets are revealed as we progressed through the story. As well as a lot of backstabbing, cattiness, ugly tears, etc, etc. The characters were ugly in their actions. But sometimes I couldn't understand their reasons for acting the way they did. Especially when it came to interacting with one another. It seemed like the tight knit bonds, weren't that tight, etc.
Overall a fun ride, but seemed like there were too many themes and plots being pushed together to have some depth for the story, It would have worked better for me if it didn't try "that hard". Didn't work for me, but might work for you.
"The Sister-in-Law" by Pamela Crane is one crazy ride!
What would you do if you return home to discover your husband dead on the couch? There's also a suicide note next to his body blaming you? Would you call the police? Or, would you call your brother to help stage the scene to make it look like a murder?
Oh, and there's a ginormous life insurance payout to consider, too!
So...the scene is staged and Harper finally calls the police to report her husband's 'murder'.
And that, folks is how this crazy story begins. But wait, there's more...
Harper doesn't want to live in the house where her husband was 'murdered' and decides to rent it out for income. She packs up her two kids and, uninvited, moves into her brother's house.
This is when Harper meets Lane's new wife, Candace. Harper is suspicious of Candice's past and the quick, secret marriage! Candice is upset at the lack of privacy and wants Harper and her kids to go!
Yep! These two sister-in-law's clash. Game on!
This story plays out through alternating chapters told in the first person point-of-views of Harper, Candace and Lane. I loved reading through each short chapter learning their backstories and secrets from their past. And, the secrets keep coming...
There are twists and turns that keeps the story moving nicely and made me anxiously to see how it would end. Although the characters are not a bit likable, the author does a great job making them interesting enough to love-to-hate. They are a messed up bunch, for sure and that's what made this one so much fun!
This is the first Pamela Crane book I've read and I'll definitely look at doing so again! I highly recommend this book to those who love Domestic Thriller's with crazy characters!
Thank you to Sam Glatt at William Morrow for a widget of this ARC through NetGalley. It has been my pleasure to give my honest and voluntary review.
Suspenseful storyline that kept me on my toes. Twists and turns I didn’t see coming. Good character building and backstories. Overall great psychological thriller.

Oh boy - where to start! This was a great tale of domestic suspense that had me guessing to the end. This was one of the most unreliable narrators I've come across in a book and it was driving me crazy (in a great book plot way!)! I truly couldn't figure out who to trust and where the story was going to go next!
A book that starts off with a death in the first few pages is enough to let you know you're in for a thrilling ride from start to finish. Characters were developed in such a way to give you enough background and connection to follow along and each chapter was written from a specific characters point of view. How's this for a cast of characters - a sister, a brother, and a new wife - throw in a dead husband, a mother/mother-in-law, some nosy neighbors, a past lover and let's not forget the kids, who always seem to have some of the answers when we aren't listening to them!
Anyone who enjoys a psychologic suspense novel, specifically one that deals in domestic issues, will thoroughly enjoy this well written tale of mystery, intrigue and family values.
I really enjoyed The Sister-in-Law! It got better the further into it that I got. I enjoy books about family drama, and even better when the story is told from the different points of view of those family members. If you like books with twists and turns, that keeps you guessing, then this is a good book for you to read!.
The Sister-in -Law by Pamela Crane was a wild ride! Lane and Harper are siblings who have always been close. After Harper's husband is murdered (?) she shows up at Lane's house to move in with her 2 young kids. She is shocked to find out Lane has gotten married to Candace, a much younger woman, and Harper can't stand her! The feeling is mutual. Candace and Harper spend the book finding ways to annoy and ruin the other. They both have secrets that Lane doesn't know about.
This was a fast paced read. The 2 main characters are the kind you love to hate. I really enjoyed the way the chapters alternated between Lane, Harper, and Candace. This way you got everyone's perspective. If you love domestic thrillers, definitely read this one! Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
The Sister-in-Law is a suspenseful book that kept me guessing! I usually have the plot/mystery somewhat figured out early in the story, so I LOVE books that keep me on my toes and have surprises up until the very end, as this one does. The story centers around 2 sisters-in-law and their difficulties living in the same house when one's husband tragically dies under suspicious circumstances and she goes with her young children to live with her brother and his new bride. I love the alternating viewpoints in this book, as it reveals more of each character's flaws and motives as the reader begins to wonder, "Which sister-in-law is actually the REAL problem?" The final conclusion is surprising, well plotted out and leaves the reader satisfied. A great summer read! This was my first book to read by Pamela Crane, so I will be searching her other books out to read as well. Thanks to NetGalley for an early review copy.
