Book 2 in the champions series
Janet Dailey is one of my favorite authors.
This is a great series
Likable characters and good story. Romance with mystery too
Setting Southern Arizona
I like that there are women carrying on the bucking bull legacy.
I noted the improvement of the main male character - he is a much better hero than the one in the previous instalment of the series who tried to scare the heroine out of her wits. I like how this one was so much more protective.
Having said that however, this is still not the Janet Dailey of yesteryears. Afraid I can’t help but compare.
Janet Dailey brings us another adventure with the Champion sisters at the Alamo Canyon Ranch. Val Champion returns home after leaving for the bright lights of Hollywood. Coming home, she reconnects with her family and the ranch. She also reconnects with her first love Casey. Coming home also meant bringing home the trouble she landed in. Will Val open up to her family so they can help her? Or will she keep it in and refuse to share? Val must choose between the love from friends and family who would support her and that same love to shield them from being hurt.
Janet Dailey brings us back to the Alamo Canyon Ranch where we get to visit with old friends and make new ones. We get to check in and see how their families are doing and I am looking forward to going on another adventure with the Champions. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for this privilege.
Whiplash - what a great name for a bucking bull! It’s been a while since I’ve ready a romance set around the PBR, and I’ve been missing out! The Champion sisters have two bulls in the PBR finals - pretty good for a small family ranch. They are all in Las Vegas for the finals when the past comes calling. Val, the sister who left the ranch after high school and just recently returned, has secrets. Some sad, some terrifying. For Val and Casey, Tess and the others, the past must come into the light and be dealt with. I was drawn into their story. It is fast-paced. The hurts, healings, and heart are all there. Read on!
Whiplash is second book in The Champions series by Janet Dailey. However, one does not have to read Whirlwind, book one, to understand the characters. Dailey does an excellent job of telling the reader about the Champion family and the Alamo Canyon Ranch. Most of this book takes place in and around the World Finals of the Professional Bull Riders in Las Vegas and it gave insight to the nitty-gritty of the bull riding circuit.
Val Champion has come home after being away for many years. She travels with her sisters to Las Vegas because they have two bulls that will be in the competition. She hesitated in making the trip because she had some bad memories of previous years in Vegas, and she did not want to see Casey Bozeman. Casey was an old boyfriend, but he was a bullfighter for the PBR event.
The past did catch up to Val and she did not know which was more of a threat to her and her heart. Casey is still in love with her after all these years and he wants to protect Val and her family from this threat but still have a clear mind to protect the bull riders when he is in the ring.
. This book was well written and an easy read with lots of drama between the outstanding characters. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. #Whiplash #JanetDailey
This book was so interesting! This was a romance book but very educational as well. The main characters were in the bull riding business and the reader actually learned a lot about the sport! Bull riding is not a sport you see in romance novels a lot and I love how this book was so different in that aspect. Made me interested in bullriding so much I actually searched the sport on youtube and the internet. This book was book 2 in a series but one does not need to read book one to understand what is happening. The book does end on a cliff hanger, setting up for book three so I hope a book three does come out. Would definitely recommend this book to others. Loved it!
WHIPLASH is the second book in Janet Dailey's new "The Champions" series and picks up pretty much where book 1 'Whirlwind' left off. Val has just moved back in with her sisters after going through some emotionally draining diffuculties trying to make it in Hollywood. She and her ex-husband Casey have a rocky past. They married when they were both young, and she left him without telling him why. Some strange things start happening to Val which makes her scared and wary about bringing her family into it, because she doesn’t want them hurt. She ends up confiding in Casey which inadvertently starts bringing them closer together, rekindling what they had lost. Her past starts to come out to the rest of her family, which also brings them closer together. They all start to heal together and help Val fight back. A nice second-chance-at-love story with more of the interesting bull riding and rodeo backdrop from the first book in the series.
Whiplash is the second in a series about the Champion family, ranchers who primarily raise bulls for rodeos. I did not read the first book. The author is presumably Janet Dailey, author of the Calder family novels, a western saga that was all the romance rage in the 80s. Seeing as Ms. Dailey passed away in 2013, she is either a literal ghost writer, or more likely, a ghostwriter is responsible for the more recent books published under her name. It's an interesting choice to publish under Dailey's name as the whole plagiarism scandal is still likely fresh in the minds of we older romance fans. i.e., Her name isn't really a selling point. I don't understand why this ghostwriter doesn't just publish under his or her own name or pen name.
But anyway.
Whomever actually penned this novel did not, in my opinion, do much to reestablish Dailey's status as a romance writing queen. I found it to be an awkward read with too many competing subplots. Further, I didn't really like any of the characters, maybe with the exception of the bulls. The bulls, I liked. After Whiplash and Whirlwind, the hero Casey is probably the best of the lot. The main thing bringing him down for me was that he actually too easily forgives Val, the heroine for the pretty godawful secret that she kept from him. For her part, Val--in addition to being a lying liarpants and former drug addict, is selfish and immature; her only decent quality seems to be that she can cook.
The funny part is that under all the crap, the basic plot is not all that bad. You've got the mob, a hitman, a ranch on the brink of foreclosure... The ingredients are there, but the execution isn't.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Val moves back to her family ranch after being gone for many years. She broke up with Casey over nine years ago. She meets him again when she is attending a rodeo in Las Vegas. While in Vegas Val believes an old acquaintance is trying to kill her. I enjoyed the chemistry between Val and Casey.
Wow! I was pleasantly surprised how much I really liked thus one! I thought it was going to be just another cowboy romance, sappy and same as always! But No! This book had a little bit of everything!! It had intrigue, suspense, action, drama and plenty of heart pounding moments!! its definitely not just another cowboy romance! Lol I highly recommend reading this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me!
This book was really good. It was fully of twists and turns and I think it's a new series for Janet Dailey. I love her books, she writes clean and heartwarming books. I looked up bull riding and it is a very dangerous sport. I am glad that netgalley let me read this in exchange for an honest review. I totally recommend this book. and the first one in the series.
I have been a Janet Dailey fan forever! It started with her Calder series and has just continued!
Her writing style is like no other and the way she incorporates historical facts into her story lines shows she has done so much research!
Whiplash didn’t let me down! I read this before the first book and needless to say I went back and read the first book immediately afterwards!
So that being said I didn’t want to write my review until after I finished the first book!
Whiplash starts off right where Whirlwind left off. Val had just moved back in with her sisters after going through some trauma after trying to make it on Hollywood. Her and Casey (ex-husband) have a rocky past, they were together when they were both young and she left him without telling him why. Some strange things start happening to Val which makes her scared and very weary about bringing her family into it because she doesn’t want them hurt. She ends up confiding in Casey which inadvertently starts bringing them closer together, rekindling what they had lost. Her past starts to come out to the rest of her family, which also brings them closer together. They all start to heal together and help Val fight back. Along with this we get to read about more bull riding and rodeos and their top of the line bulls they are raising!
This was a great read! I highly recommend it!
