This book is in three sections.
It’s a now and then book.
The story is told by different characters.
So many twists and turns.
Another vet good book by this author.
Thanks NetGalley
She receives a phone call from an out of town hospital. They tell her that her sister had been admitted wtih a serious head injury. She's been treated and needs a ride home.
But she doesn't have a sister .... does she?
Has her entire life been a lie? What is her father and step-mother keeping from her?
Told in two timelines, one in the present by Eva; the other from the past told by Nancy. But someone is lying ... and will do whatever it takes to keep the secrets from seeing the light of day.
This psychological thriller seems to have it all. The complex plot is well planned, showcasing the many secrets and lies with twists and turns that move your eyes from one to the other of the deftly drawn characters. It's a fast-paced page turner. This is not the first I've read of this author's .. and it won't be the last.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Absolutely fantastic read. I have loved this and been completely unable and unwilling to put this one down.
This is a great read which I will be highly recommending.
Let me tell you one exciting thing about Rona Halsall. She puts her characters through a wringer, and those poor dears don’t even know what has hit them… 😂 The woman is wicked, I tell ya… I should know. I have read all her books. Go me!!
The moment I started reading her book, my brain exclaimed one line, filling my body with adrenaline – boy, are we gonna have a massive workout today!! And that’s what happened. The story started so innocently…
Eva came to know after two decades that she had a sister who apparently had committed suicide. But one call to her step-mom changed that equation. Nancy was alive and hurt, and the hospital needed someone to care for her. Eva volunteered.
That started the ball rolling. From the moment the two sisters met, there was an underlying hint of something else below the surface. I loved how the author made me search for the clues.
The first half was atmospheric with a hint of underlying danger. It ended with an explosive line, and the next section was absolutely a roller coaster ride!!
I couldn’t believe the number of twists and lies the author had weaved in it. I loved it. With the sleight of hand and a line here and there, there was misdirection and blind alleys. And secrets… Yes those delicious secrets the author has drummed up…. They were simply brilliant!!
What could I say… I binge on secrets and thrills and they get me going… I was not well today, and this book made me zoom on like mad… Wowza!!
Could you make out I am recommending this book? Or was I being too subtle?
I knew that when I picked up this book, I would LOVE it! Rona Halsall is the kind of author that seems to write books with just me in mind. Obviously I know that isn’t true because so many readers love her books the way I do but it’s more like a talent of hers in the way that a good doctor makes you feel like you are his only patient! So I’m just going to go with the presumption that Rona Halsall writes her books just for me to read! The Liar’s Daughter seemed predictable at first but Rona will quickly prove your foolish predictions wrong! Another twisted plot and crazy characters! I just loved it!
The Liar's Daughter was my first Rona Halsall novel, and I really enjoyed it! The plot was interesting and unique, and I found it easy to empathize with Eva and Nancy. The book was full of twists and turns and secrets, and I really liked the ending. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review The Liar's Daughter...I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's work. : )
Probably Rona’s best work, a spine tingling read that had be gripped from the get go, tense as I read all the way through. I thought the ending was a bit soft so I marked this book down a star but overall I thoroughly enjoyed wondering what was going to happen next in this book!
Eva has always wanted a sister, but now that she suddenly has one, it throws everything into doubt. Who has been lying? Or rather, who isn't lying? The Liar's Daughter will keep you on your toes, even if you can already see down which path you're being led. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was previously named The Missing Sister and I will be honest and admit that I prefer that name, for content reasons. The relationship between the two sisters is central to the story, it's at its very heart. Having a younger sister myself, I know how much your life is shaped by your siblings, by your relationship with them. Their lives intertwine with your own and the central tension at the heart of The Liar's Daughter is how you forge that bond if you never knew the other existed. What are you willing to do for a sibling you don't really know? How do you create something spontaneously that takes years, if not decades, to build up slowly? This tension is beautiful and it is at the heart of a lot of suspense. In order to write it properly and to let it be fragile and strong and beautiful all at once, a lot of strong characterization is required. While that wasn't always present for me in The Liar's Daughter, this tension kept me engaged throughout.
Eva has put her life on halt to help her step-mother look after her increasingly ill father, whose dementia means he is living more and more in the past. But then a phone call comes in and it turns out she had a sister, one her parents thought was dead. So she sets out and looks after Nancy as she recovers from an accident. But was it an accident? And what other secrets will come out when she reconnects with her sister? Halsall moves at a fast pace, especially at the beginning of the novel, where we spend a lot of time inside Eva's mind as she deals with the revelation of her sister. Of course there are twists and turns, including two major twists that, if you frequently read suspense books and if you follow the hints Halsall spells out for you, aren't a major surprise. I still enjoyed them, but there was no major shock there. The main theme of The Liar's Daughter seems to be that people lie, that they betray the ones they claim to love, and that sometimes they lie to you because they love you. While this is an interesting set up for any suspense novel, I would have liked to see a little more flesh on those bones, even though there are some great details in this book. While all threads of the story come together neatly at the end of the book, I still felt like something was missing at the end.
I hadn't read any books by Rona Halsall before and The Liar's Daughter was an interesting introduction. The framework for a great story is right there and there were absolutely moments in which she utterly gripped me. Her descriptions of nature and certain, almost Gothic, aspects of the story at the beginning were great and kept me hooked. But in general I felt that, and I hate to be this person, there is a lot of telling, but not a lot of showing. Eva moves between anger at her parents, love for her parents, curiosity for her sister, and fear of further secrets at a speed that could give you whiplash. Throughout much of The Liar's Daughter I felt like I didn't know Eva herself enough yet to understand what all these revelations and happenings meant for her, which was a shame. The more twisty your plot gets, the more important it is that your main character can be a central focus point for your reader. And Eva wasn't entirely present for me. Nancy was interesting, in part because her life is wound up with the mystery at the heart of the novel. So there is a lot there and we get to see her change over the years. The characters around the two sisters are interesting at times but mainly function in order to further the plot and don't have much of an internal life aside from that.
While The Liar's Daughter was a fun read, it didn't resonate with me for very long. However, there is some great imagery here and fans of suspense will definitely be able to get something out of it.
The Liar's Daughter written by Rona Halsall is a psychological thriller which makes the reader question everything they read.
It starts off as a seemingly straightforward story but it's nothing like that. The reader has to navigate too many twists and turns throughout the book and each of them manages to surprise to a great extent. I especially didn't see the last one coming.
It is a page-turner which managed to capture the reader's attention fairly well. I particularly loved the way the author has given insight into all the prominent characters; those kind of books give me great satisfaction as a reader.
It is a satisfyingly thrilling mystery which grabs the mind and the imagination of the reader. And that is why I am giving 5 starts for this book. Thanks to Netgalley and the author for this ARC.
this author always draws you in from the 1st page ,Eva is helping her step mum look after her dad who has Dementia . she never knew her mum as she died when she was born her dad has never talked about what happened to her mum .then one day they get a phone call from a hospital in wales wanting someone to come and pick up her sister Eva is shocked she has an older sister who Faked her own death .so Eva goes to wales and picks up her sister hopes to bond with her but strange things are happening its quite spooky who is Nancy it is so good
This was a thriller with a lot of great build up, but the potential twists that I thought were coming were more interesting than what really happened.
Eva is living with her father and stepmother, helping care for her father suffering from dementia, when they get a phone call asking someone to come pick up her sister from the hospital. But Eva doesn’t have a sister. Except, apparently she does: Nancy, who was 16-years -old when she ran away after Eva was born and their mother died in labor. Eva treks out to a remote farm to care for her after she suffered a head injury. But when she gets there, Nancy isn’t who Eva expects.
This book was fine. It was a quick read. But all the characters only had one of two characteristics: They were either dangerously naive -- perhaps understandable for a 16-year-old sheltered teenager, but less forgiving in a 24-year-old woman -- or just downright selfish, horrible people. And, having read a lot of these thrillers now, none of these twists were surprising.
Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. It has not influenced my opinion.
This was a dark family/domestic thriller with so many secrets and twists, and just when you think that there’s no more... Wow! I recommend this book to those who don’t mind a slow start...knowing that the payoff will be worth it. I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Well.... Where to Start.
I read Rona Hassall's ' The Liars Daughter' within 24hrs.
The storyline gripping me from the very off, this was very thought out and really not rushed in any way.
Even when you think you are at the end, the story then continues and ties up every question you may have thought of along the way.
I won't go into the storyline itself as I don't want to give anything away, because there's so much I'd like to talk about, but wouldn't want to ruin the suspense for anyone!!!
But again I have to emphasise- I felt it was so well thought out and nothing had been missed. It was clever, thought provoking, and gave you all the emotions from every character whether you loathed, loved or felt sorry them.
A few of the sneaky little twists caught me off guard.... Absolutely loved that, quite literally did not see them coming.!!
This made me was really quite excited about new plots unraveling even though I was close to the end of the book!!!
Loved how the storyline finished up, was quite heartwarming and really did make me think things through.
Can I just say.... Was completely pleased that Rona had finally used the name 'Jade' for a character in her book too..... Massive brownie points there!! Haha!
ANOTHER AMAZING GRIPPING PHYSCOLOGICAL THRILLER BY RONA HALSALL!!!! ***** 5 STAR, PLEASSSSSSE KEEP THESE COMING!!!
I was completely hooked by the end of the prologue which had a decidedly creepy vibe to it, and by the end of the book I was not disappointed. I loved the fast pacing which made the story race along, and the writing just flows. There were new revelations and twists galore so that nothing ended up being as it seemed and I had to keep revising what I thought about the different characters as we learned more about each one via different points of view and timelines. Things that that seemed black and white were completely flipped around! This is a dark and twisty psychological thriller with loads of suspense to keep you turning the pages, and plenty of “What?!” and “Wow!” moments.
Rona Halsall’s books just keep getting better and better. I can’t wait for the next one!
Wow, what a captivating, intriguing, well written, intense, and unputdownable read! A book that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go until you finish! Full of fun twisty turns, thrilling thrills, tension, chills, and gasp worthy shocks! One of Halsall’s very best! I highly, highly recommend this riveting read!
Wow! This book will grab you and not let you go until the very last page, it is so compelling and addictive.
I absolutely love Rona Halsall’s books, but I think this one is the best one yet. If I had the misfortune to have to put it down and return to real life for a while, I found myself thinking about it, and trying to figure it out, and guess what would happen next.
There are some books that are so difficult to review, because the plot is so twisty that you might give something away. This is one of those books. Everything was screaming at me that Eva was making a mistake taking off to meet the sister that she’d never known. The whole atmosphere is tense and creepy from the moment she arrives. The isolated location, the spooky farmhouse, even the weather contributes to the eerie feeling.
The plot has three sections, I can’t say anymore than that for fear of spoiling it, but it will make your head spin! There is absolutely no way of second-guessing this plot, and the short chapters kept me turning the pages relentlessly. I just could not put it down.
A dark and compulsive read, with such a multi-layered plot and authentic characters, this book is an absolute must-read for anyone who enjoys a thrilling, twisty and chilling book. It will blow you away.
First, I want to thank Rona Halsall, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
OMG!! Psychological Thriller fans don’t walk but run and go pick up Rona Halsall’s The Liar’s Daughter today!!! The Liar’s Daughter is my absolute favorite book that Rona has written!! This book has the most intriguing, fascinating, thrilling, twisted, gripping, shocking, mind blowing, tragic and heartbreaking storylines ever. Infact, Rona should submit this story to Netflix! It would be a smash hit as a series!!
The book fairies at Bookouture made a good call when they revamped the cover and the title. I thought this cover graphic was a little bit more creepier and fit with the theme a little bit more. The title The Liar’s Daughter ohh was right on the money for this book!
With Covid I have learned that family is everything! However what if your family wasn’t who you really thought they were?! What if they were keeping secrets that would alter your life forever?! Rona explores these and more in this fantastic book!
I loved how Rona incorporated country living and a farmhouse into the setting of her book. I am a huge fan of that lifestyle of living. Not to mention a huge fan of Farmhouse Fixer on HGTV.
Rona addresses some important issues and brings awareness to them.
The Liar’s daughter was packed with a lot of raw emotions with the reunion of the two sisters. That was the storyline that tugged hard on my heartstrings. What a crazy good storyline that was!
It boggles the mind what earth shattering revelations were made by some of the characters! I myself was livid when the truth came out!
After reading 82 books this year this is on my top 5 list!! Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR list as it is a 5 star must read!!
This book underwhelmed me, but overall it was okay. Nothing that really jumped out at me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.
2.5/5
Eva has a sister she didn’t know she had until there was a call from a hospital in north Wales asking her to come and take care of her sister who had an accident in her isolated farm house in Snowdonia. Where has Eva’s sister been all these years and with who. The injured stranger is this really Eva’s sister . This book is about secrets and lies on so levels beginning with Eva’s father and step mother. This is a well written story with a dark plot that will keep you guessing 4 stars
Eva and her stepmum Linda are active carers for Eva's father due to the fact that he has dementia. Eva would do anything in order to be there for her father. One day Linda gets a phone call that ends up shaking Eva's world. The phone call prompted Linda to tell her that she has a sister. Eva has an older sister. How? She has never heard of this. Linda begins to tell the story...
If this was kept from Eva then what else could have been hidden from her? Not happy with the explanation she received from Linda Eva finds herself bound and determined to unearth any facts, even more lies, that have been hidden from her. The first thing Evan learns is that her sister is named Nancy. What is more is that Nancy has been hurt and needs help.
Nancy lives in a remote area and Eva reluctantly agrees to stay there with her until Nancy recovers. Hopefully during this time Eva can find out how this secret was kept from her. The first truth revealed is Nancy's age, 40, sixteen years older than Eva. What is more is that something happened in Nancy's life when she was sixteen that in part became the reason for Eva being completely unaware of her existence.
Trying to be there for Nancy while she recovers is not easy for Eva, especially when it proves that Nancy has a mean side. In fact, some of the things Eva learns are shocking. That shock passes right on to the reader. In my case I simply could not put this book down as I just had to fit the pieces of this story together.
Alternate timelines and points of view are delivered at a rapid pace with twists and turns and rabbit trails that ensue in this thrilling story. Nothing is as it seems and I loved watching things come together. Although the story did have a slow start the tension definitely picked up and grabbed my attention like a vice. The Liar's Daughter is another exciting book that I have had the pleasure of reading by Rona Halsall.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
