This book is a fast-paced psychological thriller. It has two timelines, one in the present told from Eva’s point of view and the other from the past from Eva’s sister Nancy’s point of view. In the present, Eva’s life is turned upside-down when her stepmother receives a phone call from an out-of-town hospital, and Eva finds out she has an older sister she never knew about. In spite of her stepmom’s misgivings, Eva travels from England to North Wales to nurse her sister, Nancy, back to health. The first portion of the book ends with a bombshell before the timeline switches to the past, focusing on Nancy’s life years earlier. Eva and Nancy both experience some unexpected events in this twisty thriller with a very clever plot.

I enjoyed the first part of the book much better than the first. It was hard to see Nancy so thoroughly manipulated in the second part. This part was very downbeat and was harder for me to get through, but I still really enjoyed the book overall as well as the more hopeful ending. I would rate it 3.5/4 stars. This is the only book I’ve read by this author, but I would definitely read others.

This is the second review in a row that I’m writing how refreshing it is to read a psychologic thriller with a storyline that’s never been told so shout out to Net Galley as well as Rona Halsall for giving me the opportunity to read this captivating story!! The Liar’s Daughter had me hooked from page one. Full of surprised and plot twists, the suspense had me reading my kindle even as I cooked dinner. What a great read, I’m actually going to get the authors other psychological thriller now since I enjoyed this one so much!!

When Eva finds out she has an older sister 24 years after she disappeared she's shocked. She supposedly committed suicide right after their mother died when she was born, but her father and stepmother kept it from her. When the hospital calls the next of kin to let them know she's been injured Eva finds out that her sister Nancy: is now 40, alive, and has been living on a remote farm.
Despite Eva not knowing anything about the the woman Nancy has become, she feels she owes it to her sister to help. But from the start things Nancy tells her leaves more questions than answers. What has actually happened these past 24 years and will she find the answers she seeks?
The first part of this book was a little unbelievable for me - instead of twists and turns I felt it was a bit overdone to seem that way. The sister was weird right off the bat. Instead of waiting for that storyline to play out over the first third of the book, I felt it could've been made clear earlier.
What really happened to Nancy didn't take me by surprise, and extra storylines felt excessive and not like the thrilling twists I was hoping for. This was an okay book for me - I think it'd be a great start for someone just dipping their toes into psychological thrillers, but for someone who has read so many of them, this wasn't anything special to me.

A great psychological thriller with a good twist, this book was slow to start with but soon picked up, I really enjoyed it.

Eva is helping her step-mum Linda care for her father who has dementia when they receive a phone call from a hospital in Bangor saying that a female patient with head injuries has given her name as Nancy and appears to be related to them. Eva learns for the first time that she has a sister who was thought to have died twenty-four years earlier, and drives to the hospital to collect Nancy and take her back to the farm where she lives. Eva wants to learn more about her sister and offers to stay for a few days but when secrets and lies start to emerge who can she believe, her step-mum or the sister she didn’t know existed?

‘The Liar’s Daughter’ is a dark and gripping psychological thriller of secrets, lies and coercion. The story is told in three parts, each one giving the story through the eyes of Eva and Nancy. When I was halfway through the novel I thought it had slowed down somewhat but as I continued reading there was a return of the drama, intrigue and suspense and with each twist and turn I became more engrossed in the characters and their experiences, until I reached the final part which took me by surprise. This is a well-written novel with an ingenious plot that I enjoyed reading and can definitely recommend.

The main problem I had with this book was the fact that it's starting getting interesting after more or less half of it.
If it wasn't a review copy I would have DNFed it somewhere around 25%. Unfortunately first half is extremely slow and quite frankly boring.
The second half is way more interesting and fast paced. The twists aren't as surprising as I would have hoped, but the reading experience is way better here. The writing is also better, as in the forst hald it felt clunky and cringe at times.

Eve is an absolute doormat of a protagonist and I hate it in books that I read. She's very naive and timid. If I were her, the second I started to suspect that something's wrongwith Nancy I would have run and you'd never see me again. Eve? Not so much> She felt like running but then thought "well, my wallet and my phone are left at the house, better go back to a woman that might be a murderer". Girl, NO.

I enjoyed the second part, the most, when we learn Nancy's story. I enjoyed the way how gaslighting, intimidation and manipulation were shon - starting small, until a complete incapacitation.
After that second part, thist felt a bit flat, but it was still enjoyable.
Final twist did not shock me at all.

Random note: when I requested this book its title was "The Missing Sister" and had a different cover which made me curious about this book and made me want to read it. Unfortunately I think this change of title was quite unfortunate, as it's not the best nor it represents the story better. The cover is also pretty meh. If I were to request it now, I wouldn't.

Ever since I read "The Honeymoon" , I have picked up each of Rona's books with an expectation of something exciting to come. But none of them quite lived up to the thrillride I got from that first book...until now. A deliciously dark tale of deception and family secrets, THE LIAR'S DAUGHTER is twisted, it's creepy and addictive from start to finish. And it did not disappoint!


Eva has put her life on hold to help her stepmother care for her ailing father who is suffering dementia. Until the day her life is thrown into turmoil with a phone call saying that her sister is in hospital with head injuries.

But...Eva doesn't have a sister.

Sitting down with Linda, the only mother she has ever known, Eva soon learns that she did indeed have a sister called Nancy who, at sixteen and just after the death of their mother after giving birth to baby Eva, disappeared leaving nothing but the words "I hate my life" scrawled on her mirror in lipstick and a pile of clothes with a note underneath the pier where they had lived in Blackpool. It was thought that, distraught by her mother's death, Nancy had taken her own life.

Eva is shocked by this revelation. Why would they not tell her that she had a sister? Even if she was dead, why would they keep that from her? Though her mother had died when she was born and Linda moved in to help her father raise her, there had never been any mention of a sister. Now she wonders what else her parents have kept from her.

Energised by this new information, Eva decides to head to Snowdonia in North Wales to help care for her sister who wants to be discharged but needs someone to care for her while she recovers from her head injury. Linda is mortified and tries persuading Eva not to go, telling her she doesn't know Nancy or how difficult she could be. But Eva is adamant. Nancy needs her help while she recuperates...and she is excited about the prospect of getting to know the sister she never knew she had.

Driving hundreds of miles to pick up her sister from hospital, Eva then drives them home where she will care for her sister until she recovers. But home is a remote farmhouse nestled on a Snowdonia hillside with not another person or house in sight for miles. The atmosphere is decidedly creepy and Eva soon finds herself jumping at shadows or the merest sound. And yet the prospect of staying on a farm stirs up the wildlife conservationist in her that she can't help feeling somewhat charged by this new challenge ahead.

But after a few days, Eva realises that all is not as it seems. That Nancy is not all that she seems. There is a hardness to her stare that is there one minute and then gone the next as her face radiates in a smile, gushing platitudes of gratefulness for Eva's loving care. Questions also arise after Nancy reveals the truth behind her departure and what their father was really like. But what Eva really wants to know was what happened to her sister in the time she left home twenty four years ago? Why did she not try and contact them over the years? And there is Nancy's sudden snappiness and hostility that seemingly comes from out of nowhere with her moods all over the place. But that's just her head injury...right? She cannot claim to have known what she was like beforehand but surely she couldn't have changed too much...could she? And then there is the "accident" that lead to her head injury. Nancy claims it was just a farm accident but Eva wonders if her sister had been attacked and is now in danger? If they are both in danger?

And when food she knows she bought starts going missing, Eva begins to think that the sisters could be in trouble. Whoever attacked Nancy could still be out there...watching...and waiting...

Set mostly on a remote hill farm in Snowdonia, THE LIAR'S DAUGHTER is an absorbing, atmospheric and somewhat unconventional thriller. So completely different to what I have come to expect from Rona but I was pleasantly surprised by this dark and tense tale of secrets and deception.

The story unfolds through the eyes of Eva and Nancy in parts one and two respectively, followed by part three that combines the two perspectives to complete the narrative as the truth, and all its secrets, is slowly revealed. And while some of it may be predictable, there are a few twists that are bound to shock.

THE LIAR'S DAUGHTER is distinctly creepy and the setting of the remote hill farm in Snowdonia only added to the sinister atmosphere and was perfect for this thriller. The story is eerily disquieting as family secrets and deception are laid bare but most chilling of all is the ease with which the questioning perceptions the characters have that seemingly dissipate into the silence of the hills in which they find themselves. There is a feeling of powerlessness that echoes and builds as the truth finally comes to light.

Well-written and by far one of Rona's best thrillers yet, THE LIAR'S DAUGHTER is a chilling tale that has it all: suspense, mystery, family drama, secrets, lies, deception and gas-lighting. It is deliciously dark, tense and chilling, and will have you locking your doors and flipping pages right to the very end.

A fast paced read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Oh, where to start? I kept flipping pages because I honestly didn't know what was going to happen next--but what a story! I'm not typically a fan of psychological thrillers, but this one had me hooked. It wasn't overdone, dragged out, or over-the-top, and it really has you asking who you can trust. People are going to get tired of me talking about this book because it is straight out FABULOUS!! It will be one of my go-to recommendations for a long time to come.

This story has a little bit of everything. It has lots of family drama, tons of lies, lovable characters, and loads of twists that are completely unbelievable. Every.....Single.....Time....I thought I had it figured out I got a surprising twist. Don't ya just love that?

When we begin, an ambulance is on the way to a remote farm to pick up a patient and it's unknown how she was injured. When they arrive the injured person assures them it was an accident, but to the paramedics it looks suspicious. The patient is taken to a hospital where she is treated for a head wound. Unknowingly the patient gives the hospital staff permission to call someone to pick her up because she wants to leave against the doctor's advice.

When Eva arrives she is there to pick up her sister that she just found out about. Ya see, Eva is 24, but she has a sister, Nancy, who is 16 years older than her. The reason she doesn't know her is because Nancy ran away soon after Eva was born. Eva's mother also died soon after she was born.. Her father and step-mother thought Nancy had committed suicide so they never mentioned her to Eva.

From there you will not believe what happens. I literally could not put this book down. Then when I was finished I wanted more! The writing, storyline, and conveying it to the readers was spot on. I could see everything playing out in my mind while I was reading. I absolutely can not wait to read another one of her books!

I have heard alot of good things about Rona Hallsall and her books but this is the first one I have read and wow it will not be the last!
This book had me on the first page and it did not let go. It had so many twists and turns that I could not guess where the story was going. It had me on the edge of my seat right up to the end - It was fantastic.

I have had this on my TBR pile for a little while, saving it till I had the time to lose myself in what I hoped to be another unputdownable read from Rona Halsall. I was not disappointed; another gripping physiologic thriller.
Eva returns home to help her stepmom, Linda, to help care for her father, who has dementia.
Eva's biological mother died the day she was born; Linda took her in and bought her up.
When Linda answers a call telling her that Nancy, Eva's sister, has been in hospital and is being discharged and needs someone to care for her for a few days, a shocked Eva volunteers spontaneously to go to her; until this day, Eva had no idea she had a sister, 16 years older than herself.
Eva drives the few hundred miles to pick up her sister from the hospital and look after her until she is better. Nancy's home turns out to be a remote farmhouse in Snowdonia.
What happens next is an intriguing story full of revealing family secrets and unforeseeable twists that keep you engaged to the last full stop.
A highly recommended read.

This is the third book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Her Mother's Lies' and 'The Ex Boyfriend' and highly recommend them both.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis. I am also a huge fan of Rona's previous books and if this is half as good as her previous books it is sure to be great. It also stated in the synopsis that this book is 'perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, The Woman in the Window and The Family Upstairs'. I am a huge fan of 'The Family Upstairs' and 'The Girl On The Train' so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 41 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. The fact that this book is partly based in Wales is even better as I live in Wales.

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being Eva and Nancy. The benefits of third person perspective especially with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.

Wow!!!! Well done Rona on another amazing success!!! An absolutely fantastic unputdownable psychological thriller. Extremely well written as are all Rona's books I have previously read with vivid descriptions that absorb you into the storyline. Absolutely love the new cover and name which suit the storyline perfectly.

The storyline is chillingly realistic and it kept me on the edge of my seat and then in the edge of my bed until late at night as I just could not out it down!!! I loved that it was seperate into three sections with the Now and Then and the different perspectives ensuring that the reader missed absolutely nothing. There isn't just the one storyline but all the smaller ones which blend in nicely without any confusion but ensuring there's always something going on. I would never have worked out any of the explosive secrets that were planted throughout and I loved the suspense it creates. Well done Rona as I am getting harder and harder to shock but you definitely managed it!! I was captivated throughout and the storyline was absolutely rammed with secrets, loss, love, desceiot, suspense, tension and red herrings all the way up until the very perfect ending.

The characters were also very realistic and well developed. I enjoyed getting to know each of them and loved finding out about their true stories. Eva and Nancy are both very strong women neither of which give up and I do love a book with a strong female lead. I am glad that the storyline went into their background as it showed the reasons they each did what they did along with their character development throughout.

Congratulations Rona on what promises to be another HUGE success and for, yet again, manage to shock me when many fail. This would make an epic movie and I look forward to your next novel.


Overall an addictive, page turning psychological thriller that will shock you.

I've devoured this book. There were so many elements I enjoyed about this book. From the setting to the characters everything seemed effortless. This was my first thriller from Rona Halsall and I feel a bit overwhelmed by how twisty her writing is. Even though there were a few moments where my heart literally jumped out of my chest, I enjoyed the ride. The character of Eva had a few moments where I couldn't help myself but shout at my kindle but overall it was a really strong contender to become one of my favourite books I read this year.

Well holy moly was this a ride and a half. The Liar’s Daughter was as I expected, swift and nerve splitting. Rona Halsall’s novels always get my heart racing, and her new release undoubtedly would be no different. A prologue that had me sweating bullets and asking questions without coming up for air. Paramedics arrive at a remote farm in North Wales, the women they attend to has had a severe knock to the head and is only just conscious. Its an injury that they doubt she has done to herself but she’s insistent. The only thing is, why can they hear someone else in the house?

The title and the cover had me intrigued…the darkness, the intensity of it all. It’s a story that must be devoured. Its fodder for the imagination. Imagine your stepmother receiving a phone call to tell you that your sister has been involved in accident, the point where you discover you have a sister no-one told you about. The emotions running through you would be confusing, right? The shock, the disbelief and the disappointment at years lost. This is exactly Eva’s reality in The Liar’s Daughter. A story that careens to an explosive finish.

Eva has wanted a sister her entire life. She begged and prodded her parents to give her sister, but it just never happened. She’s a graduate in Wildlife Conversation but has had to put her career on hold to help her stepmother care for her father who has been diagnosed with Dementia. He’s in sharp decline and care must be split between them, a harsh reality for someone so young. After receiving the phone call regarding the news of her long-lost sister, Nancy, Eva takes it upon herself to go and look after her until she has recovered from a serious head injury. The vast range of emotions and fears are laid bare and Halsall injected butterflies in MY stomach.

The Liar’s Daughter at its core is a story about family ties, betrayal and trauma. The author has done an exquisite job in her portrayal of mental health and gas lighting…executed with class and dignity. The story is told in dual POV’s, between Nancy and Eva. The atmosphere had me instantly, I could imagine the rolling hills of Wales and could almost feel the wind blowing through my hair. I was there and the immersion of the story was at a completely different level.

There’s a lot to this story – so many layers to pull back and examine. You are given snippets of people’s lives. Halsall has written something that is so naturally flowing, the characterization isn’t forced, everything is just so organic.

The Liar’s Daughter is superb. The pace is liable to give you whiplash if you aren’t careful. The feeling of powerlessness builds to a crescendo. Another belter from Rona Halsall.

A brilliant read,. I was really looking forward to this novel and I wasn't disappointed,a physcologic thriller that grips you from the first page. Eva doesn't even know she has a sister but when a call comes out of the blue that her sister Nancy is in hospital she immediately goes to see her .What happens when they meet sets the the scene for a fantastic read, the remote setting adds to the drama and there are a few twists to keep you guessing. A real page Turner and its is one I highly recommend

This book was a bit slow at the beginning but hang in there it gets very good. I love a good story about family secrets cause so many of us have them. Highly Recommend reading this book totally brilliant.

Oo these type of novels are definitely right up my alley! So creepy at times and definitely didn’t expect the ending. Great writing and the characters were awesome.

Eva was never told about having a sister, Nancy, so she heads to the hospital and get her settled in at home. Things don’t seem right, it gets suspenseful and creepy!
