Meeting Strangers, Making friends
Frenetic...I think is probably the best way to describe this book.
I’ve never known a travel log cover quite so much ground – literally and metaphorically – and sadly I didn’t find the ‘rapid fire’ style to my taste. I was disappointed with many of the chapters which felt rushed and over brief about countries and trips that must have been incredible.
Not all the chapters were this way however, in some you get a lovely detailed insight into the people the author met and the adventures they had together. For example the opening section about the postcard and the volcano has a wonderful feel and perhaps it was this excellent start that made me feel let down by what followed... It just seems very hit and miss – whether he didn’t keep much of a diary or didn’t enjoy some of these places or felt the reader wouldn’t want to know more...
I also didn’t really enjoy the constant push to ‘go to the website’ to find out more, see pictures, read the full story etc - I wanted to read the full story in the book!
Perhaps this is the ideal book for those wanting more of an ‘interactive, dip in - dip out experience’ rather than the traditional ‘curl up and get lost in’.
