Book review: No One Will Miss Her by Kat Rosenfield

No One Will Miss Her is an adult contemporary mystery thriller about a woman found dead and mutilated in an isolated cabin and her husband and the wealthy Boston couple involved in her death.

Lizzie Oullette was a small town girl and the daughter of the local junkyard owner. The locals have distrusted her family since her father arrived decades before and Lizzie married the local golden boy and cut short his pro-baseball dreams. For extra money she rents out her lakeside cabin to wealthy city people like disgraced billionaires Adrienne and Ethan Richards. Once in the orbit of these spoiled people of privilege Lizzie’s life will be permanently altered.
Ian Bird is the detective in charge of untangling Lizzie’s and Adrienne’s complicated relationship and figuring the how and why of Lizzie’s death and where her husband went.

This is a dark and twisted tale of small towns, privilege and what happens when a girl’s dreams are cut short. I loved the “not everything is what it seems” aspect and Detective Bird’s contribution to the overall plot. I recommend this one to reader’s that enjoy both gritty suspense thrillers and detective novels.

4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I want to keep it brief to avoid spoilers. It’s easy to guess what the twist will be, with all the little clues carefully plotted in the first half. But then there’s part two and the fascinating repercussions of the events in part one. The ending is incredibly satisfying.

Well, No One Will Miss Her was a WILD ride. Spoilers ahead so read at your own risk!

At first, I was super intrigued. I loved the first part of this book. What didn't work for me was the second half.

Lizzie was an interesting main character with a tragic past. She's grown up as the "trash" of her small town. Seemingly never escaping her label, Lizze is an outsider in her own community. *Note, there's a trigger for animal abuse here early on that was hard for me to handle.*

Lizzie befriends the rich debutante, Adrienne, who is renting their lake house with her husband, Ethan. This is when things go wrong for Lizzie. She's tragically killed by her husband, Dwayne. Except this isn't the true story. In part 2, we find out this was all a lie and she somehow magically became Adrienne's twin and it was really Adrienne we found dead in part 1. I couldn't process this twist. It was just TOO unbelievable for me. You're telling me all we are going to use to identify someone's body is a mole on their chest?? And NOBODY recognizes that Lizzie is pretending to be Adrienne?? Too many plot holes for me.

This was really entertaining, but just lost effect with me in its execution. I'm in the minority and everyone else seems to love this one, but it just wasn't my fave. I'd still give this a 3 star review and want to see more from this author.

From my blog: Always With a Book:

When you read as many thrillers as I do, finding that one that stands out is gold and that is exactly what this debut novel is here. There have been a slew of debuts out lately that I have loved, but this one really takes the cake for just how original it is.

Right from the start, I was pulled into this one and that feeling never let up. I totally binge-read this one and loved every second of it. The writing is so sharp and witty and I loved that some of it is talking directly to the reader – I find those inside conversations to be so insightful. But this time, it really puts you on edge because you just aren’t quite sure what to expect.

The story alternates between three points of view and the characters are so dynamic. Added to that is the pacing, which really is on point and you have quite an engaging read that just begs you to keep flipping those pages. The twists are shocking and I for one definitely did not see them coming! There is nothing here for the sake of a thrill, all is perfectly plotted and it all comes together quite brilliantly.

I’m really keeping this quite vague as I think you need to go into this one as blind as possible. It definitely is such a great read and I know I will for sure be keeping an eye out for what comes next from this very talented author!

I love my home state. It’s beautiful, it’s peaceful, but there is absolutely a backwoods mentality that’s prevalent here, as I’m sure it is in small towns everywhere.

So, when I saw the advance synopsis for No One Will Miss Her, I knew I had to have it. A girl from a hardscrabble small town meets a gorgeous Instagram influencer with a murderous twist? Yes, please.

Kat Rosenfield’s No One Will Miss Her definitely didn’t disappoint. With an epic twist that I didn’t see coming, it’s a solid thriller that will have me reaching for whatever Kat writes next. There is one scene involving animal abuse that I should warn you about. It’s pivotal towards moving the story forward, and it overall didn’t affect my enjoyment of the story.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to review! Following is a link to my 10/14/2021 Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CVAwo6FrhBn/

A great psychological thriller with a twist.
This book had me turning the pages at a furious pace.
I love the different format it was written in. Two strong female protagonists that are complete opposites but so similar.
This book had me guessing until the very end.
My first read from this Author and won't be my last.
Thank you to Netgalley, William Morrow and Custom House and the Author Kat Rosenfield for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5/5 for this dark, unique read!

Lizzie is known as trash bag, trailer trash. She lives with her father who runs the local junkyard. When Lizzie is found brutally murdered, the locals have a lot to say….not all kindly. Her father’s junkyard is burning at the same time, oh and her husband is missing! Adrienne is on the other end … rich, lifestyle influencer. They have one thing in common….no friends and lots of secrets.

This book starts with Lizzie speaking from the grave and follows her story, and goes into Adrienne’s story and how these 2 women, from completely different lifestyles, intersect. I found this story compelling, and could not put it down. Lizzie, her life, her story, will totally tug on your heartstrings and I found myself rooting for her…whether right or wrong. Adrienne is so totally on the other end of the spectrum and found her cold as ice!

The plot is unique, writing is compelling. Characters are raw, real. Plot twists abound, some I could see coming, others not at all. My imagination was running wild throughout and I sat with my nose in this book whenever I could…even reading during a long car ride, something I usually can’t do. I look forward to reading this author again.

Thanks to Ms. Rosenfield, William Morrow and Custom House and NetGally for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone!

No One Will Miss Her by Kat Rosenfield is a strong psychological suspense novel. Set in the down and out town of Copper Falls, Maine, Lizzie Ouellette is found dead and disfigured in her cabin by the lake. While most of the townspeople don’t care about Lizzie, the Junkyard Jezebel, they are concerned that her husband, Dwayne, is missing also.
Detective Bird is sent by the state police to participate in the investigation and knows this is going to be a case of trying to crack the small-town wall of silence to find the truth.
The other piece of the puzzle is Adrienne Richards, a Boston resident from a privileged upbringing who is married to Ethan, a wealthy but now shamed corporate crook. They are repeat renters of Lizzie’s cabin, and thus their lives intersect.
No spoilers from me about this gripping story—it was a wild ride from beginning to startling end. I enjoyed the alternating narratives, from City (Adrienne), The Lake (Bird), and Lizzie’s voice from the grave, which I especially liked. Lizzie is down to earth, from an impoverished family and tormented by her peers in high school. But she also has aspirations and is a survivor. She admires Adrienne’s style, and even emulates her.
The novel is atmospheric with great descriptions and some clever writing. Lizzie’s voice was especially wry and entertaining with lots of irony.
This is a well-written thriller that is entertaining, and has enough pathos and twists to be a very satisfying read.

Thank you to William Morrow and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my honest review.

I love a good small town mystery, and NO ONE WILL MISS HER is no exception. Lizzie grew up in rural Maine and has become the town outcast as an adult. The community isn’t shocked when Lizzie is found dead, but when her well-loved husband goes missing people get concerned.

Lizzie speaks directly to readers from beyond the grave which sets the story apart right from the first page. Social status is also explored in a memorable way that gives the story depth.

Debut author, Kat Rosenfield, really sets the scene for an atmospheric and gritty mystery. While there is a solid twist, it was the characters and their motivations that kept me engaged.

My favorite way to binge a thriller is doing an audio/print combo. Three distinct narrators brought the story to life in my ears when I just couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. This psychological suspense is a great novel to cozy up with this fall!

A great thriller - some found this predictable but I really enjoyed. A fast, entertaining read that I thought was super unique.

Did Kat Rosenfield ever knock this one out of the park! This was a truly outstanding psycho drama! It was a positively deliciously twisted plot and great come-uppance to those towns people who had been so unkind to our protagonist, Lizzie.

Just don’t start this one at night – you’ll not be able to put it down until the very last word!

NetGalley and the publisher, William Morrow, allowed me to read an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I so enjoyed this psychological thriller. And oh my, what a twist. The story is being told in the voice of a dead girl Lizzie. She is from a run down town, her father owns a junk yard and her husband killed her cat when they were kids. (That part was very hard to get through, just an FYI if animal cruelty makes you livid. I wouldn't not read the book though because of it. Just skip over that part). Another teller of the story is Adrienne. She is a social media influencer. She is married to a criminal but he has money and she loves all the things money can buy. They are two different woman but the one thing they have in common is that they both do not have any friends. They befriend each other when Adrienne stays in Lizzie's house that her Dad gave her. She had set it up as an Airbnb. The author did a great job with these characters because you get very involved with them and their stories. The twist has the WOW factor and keeps you hooked until the end. I did listen and read this book and both the audio and book version were great. I would highly recommend this book even if psychological thrillers are not your thing. It is available for purchase today October 12, 2021.

This was such a quick read that you can easily fly through. The multiple POVs and short chapters also do a good job keeping a great pace. They leave you effortlessly engaged and continually flipping the page.

While the concept was definitely a fun idea, unfortunately I just didn’t love it. I also guessed the main twist pretty early on but it was still enjoyable to watch how everything plays out! I do recommend checking it out yourself as I’ve certainly seen a tonne of great reviews and mine seems to be the unpopular opinion!

3.5 stars rounded to 4 for goodreads

Happy Pub Day to No One Will Miss Her!

I flew through this book over the weekend and loved every second of this wild ride! I think this one is better to read blindly, but know it’s fully of twisty goodness- sex, lies, drugs, secrets and murder.

The writing was fantastic and the pacing was perfect. The characters were all horrible people, but they didn’t annoy me or take away from the enjoyment of this book. I enjoyed the big twist and thought the ending was satisfying!

All in all, I really enjoyed No One Will Miss Her! Four stars!

Thank you to @williammorrowbooks & NetGalley for a copy in return for my honest review.

If you are looking for a fast paced, twisty thriller, No One Will Miss Her is for you. There were a couple I didn’t see that coming moments for me and I couldn’t wait to reach the conclusion. I liked the alternating chapters between the main characters and look forward to more from Kat Rosenfield. Add this to your to read list now!

The one where I figured out the twist.

I think the only really divisive reviews about this one are going to be about the twist. Did you figure it out or were you completely blown away?

Unfortunately I clued into this one and that’s okay because it happens when you’re an avid reader looking for breadcrumbs and I appreciate an author that drops a few hints along the way. I would say she did a good job at hiding them and I’m a good detective.

I love that we have a POV from beyond the grave. How fun is that!?

I really do this most readers will enjoy this small town twisted mystery.

No One Will Miss Her is a haunting and fast paced thriller that really surprised me. It's about a girl who grew up poor in a small town and the story begins with her father's junkyard burning to the ground and her dead body being discovered. The story travels back and forward in time to uncover the story from 3 different points of view, and at first I didn't find anyone very likeable, but the second part of the story really drew me in! Kat Rosenfeld's writing is witty and sharp, a quick read but with well developed, complex characters.

I was lucky to have access to both the ebook and audiobook versions of this story. The audiobook was really well done, but with the way the timeline of this story goes, I found it easier to follow in the ebook, partly because it's such a gripping story that once I started reading the pages just flew by. Overall I thought this was a great thriller and look forward to reading more by Kat Rosenfeld.

No One Will Miss Her opens with the death of Lizzie Ouellette. In the small dying town of Copper Falls, Maine Lizzie was an outsider. Her father ran a junkyard and they lived in poverty. It is Lizzie who tells her story from growing up in the junkyard to her pregnancy and marriage to Dwayne and finally to the day that a shotgun blast ended her life. Dwayne was the high school athletic star with a glowing future. Lizzie’s pregnancy put an end to that and added to the resentment that she felt from the townspeople. When she came into possession of a cabin on the lake she developed it as a rental to make extra money. That was how Adrienne Richards came into her life.

Adrienne was everything that Lizzie was not. The wife of a disgraced billionaire, she was self-assured and demanding but like Lizzie, she was also lonely. She called on Lizzie for extra services during her stay and in return she provided her with her cast off designer clothes. Lizzie’s association with Adrienne also gave her more confidence. As she grew closer to Adrienne she had dreams of what she could have had and envied Adrienne, but you should be careful of what you wish for. Now Lizzie lies dead and Dwayne is missing. Detective Ian Bird is responsible for the case and his investigation takes him from Copper Falls to Boston, where he looks into Adrienne and Lizzie’s relationship.

Kat Rosenfield’s story lulls you into a belief that you have figure the solution to Lizzie’s murder, but nothing is as it seems. There are some wild twists to this psychological thriller that are jaw-dropping. This story has all of the elements that a mystery lover looks for and comes highly recommended. I would like to thank NetGalley and William Morrow/Custom House for providing this book for my review.

What a ride!

This was a fast passed thriller and a quick read, I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put this down.

It moved quickly, narrated between different characters and multiple POV throughout, which definitely helped to keep me on my toes.
