This was an unusual plot. Gripping and fast paced. The whole research based on psychopaths put me on edge and I could sense an undercurrent of darkness. A must read for crime fans..
This book has a truly original plot. A program at a college especially for individuals diagnosed as psychopaths. On this small campus, someone starts killing the anonymous participants in this program. Meanwhile, Chloe (a participant in the program) has her own agenda to track down a fellow student and kill him for raping her when she was just twelve. Needless to say, there is a lot going on in this novel. The plot unfolds at various stages, sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly. The author, being a social psychologist, has sprinkled in a lot of actual social psychology experiments that the participants are required to perform and answer. This is not your run-of-the-mill thriller and I kept thinking about the characters between readings. There are a few character twists that keep you, as the reader, unsure of their future actions at all times. A fantastic debut novel. Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced reading copy of this novel.
I really loved the creativity in the story. The beginning was intriguing -what really goes on in the mind of 3 psychopaths (Chloe, Andre and Charles?? Well, to be honest ..nothing good. The middle of the book dragged for me and I did have to force myself to finish. I did not feel any attachment to the three psychopaths stories and Andre's story could have really been shortened. However, I see a lot of promise in the author Vera Kurian. I would definitely try another of her books. It is just that "Never Saw Me Coming" had too much filler and the book could have been much shorter for my liking.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for a chance to read and review.
Had issue getting into this book was difficult following the characters and ended up not finishing the book
This was an interesting premise and a unique read. Recruiting psychopaths for a secret study on a college campus while they matriculate and blend with the student body made for some page turning reading. A bit gory at times, but all-in-all a solid read. Nice use of the current fascination with social media and society's obsession with sharing everything online.
Mystery fiction. Chloe has been accepted into a clinical study (seven psychopaths/participants) as part of her college acceptance. When one of the participants is found murdered, Chloe is not the only one who's worried. Is the killer one of the psychopaths or someone from the outside? Slow-paced at times but included an interesting twist.
NEVER SAW ME COMING starts off at a run and never slows down. Non-stop thrills from start to finish. A unique cast of psychopaths pitted against a killer, all set on a college campus. Vera Kurian doesn't let anyone off easy in this thriller. Highly entertaining!!!
Vera Kurian’s debut novel is one of the most unique psychological thrillers I have recently read. This book reminds me of Gossip Girl meets Dexter, but pigeonholing it as such really does it an injustice, as Kurian’s novel is purely fresh and original. Thrillers are a dime a dozen and oftentimes seem like the same story, different cast. Similar books have tried, and failed, to take on a revenge tale, but Kurian succeeds wholly. Anyone with an interest in Psychology is going to find this novel captivating and difficult to put town. The characters are complex and charismatic and, despite their faults and shortcomings, readers will find them difficult to dislike.
The story follows Chloe Sevre who is part of a group of college students enrolled in a research program for psychopaths. Each student has their own motivation for enrolling in the program. As the body count starts stacking up between attending classes, frat parties, and elite galas, Chloe questions whom she can trust among the people around her. This is a unique whodunit with a psychopathic twist, because can you ever really trust a psychopath?

This is the first time I have ever cared so much about extremely unlikeable characters! I was immediately intrigued by the psychopath as protagonist situation and I wasn't disappointed. Great suspense, engaging story, good cast of characters - the story did feel a little long, but I didn't really mind because I was enjoying it.
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for the advance copy to read and review. All opinions are my own.
Overall, this was a super creative story. Ultimately, it revolves around 3 psychopath students on a college campus each trying to meet their own objectives. Along the way, their paths intertwine when they believe they may be in danger.
However, it was a bit hard for me to root for these characters. While they were all smart and cunning, their own self-interest always prevailed.
The mystery itself ended up being surprising. I liked the ending, but the story dragged towards the middle a bit.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! No spoilers. Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to. Truly Amazing and appreciated the whole story. This is going to be a must read for many many readers. Maybe even a book club pick.
A story of a university research study centering on a small group of psychopaths, enrolled as students at the university. When several in the group are murdered, three of the remaining subjects decide to find out who is doing this. The story is told from the alternating perspectives of the three students. Each has secrets of their own and being psychopaths, they are excellent at manipulating the truth. It makes for an interesting mystery but, be warned, you won’t find anyone to root for.
A truly unique thriller. This book takes the reader into the world of psychopaths and there is no looking back. Full of great twists, this book is compulsively readable. Also has one of the more realistic college settings I've ever seen in a book.
What would it be like to look inside the brain of a psychopath? In Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian we are given that inside peek, The book mainly focuses on Chloe who has received a full-ride scholarship to college on the condition that she participates in a study on psychopaths, like herself. When students in the program are killed it is up to her and the other program participants to find the killer.
What I liked: Chloe is an awful narrator. She is completely unlikeable, but you cannot help rooting for her and her plans to kill a local frat boy. Going into this book you gave one idea of what a psychopath is, but the author wrote each character in the study so unique that it makes you think about what we consider “normal.” As the story progresses, each narrator becomes less and less reliable, and I found myself second guessing who the killer was until the end.
To keep in mind: While the book is well written, it is dense and could be shortened. I felt that at some points the story was slowed down because information was repeated multiple times.
Rating: I would recommend this book because it is something that will keep you in your toes and make you cheer on a group of psychopaths.
The premise of this book was so promising but there was just way too many storylines and characters to keep track of..it got really confusing at times. I only just barely was able to finish it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.
I will admit that I wasn’t expecting much from this one. There’s no shortage of stories of anti-heroes and vigilante women and I thought this would end up being more of the same. However, Never Saw Me Coming surpassed all of my expectations. I enjoyed this book so much!
I think part of what sets the book apart from similar stories is that it’s not just about one psychopathic woman. Chloe is one of several students getting a free ride to college to be part of a study on psychopathy. While the subjects aren’t supposed to know who each other are, Chloe discovers a few of them and we also get POVs from some of them, as well – Charles and Andre. Charles is exactly the kind of character you would think of when you hear about a Washington DC-based psychopath. Andre has faked his way into the program for the free tuition and is a much needed dose of empathy to help level out the other perspectives. Even though there’s definite anti-hero vibes from Chloe and Charles, I did find myself liking them. I thought they were well-written and it showed how easy it is to be taken in by such manipulative behavior.
I thought the mystery was well done, as well. I suspected numerous characters at different times and while I did ultimately guess who the killer was, it wasn’t until close to the actual reveal.
Overall, I really enjoyed Never Saw Me Coming. While so many books with similar themes have let me down, this one actually lived up to it’s potential and surpassed my expectations. The characterization was very well done and the writing was addictive. My only nitpicky complaints are that there were times – especially in the beginning – where there was some info-dumping about psychopathy that I thought could have been incorporated into the narrative a little more seamlessly and I thought things were wrapped up a little too easily at the end. Those things definitely didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the over all story, though, and I am definitely going to be on the look out for Kurian’s next book.
Overall Rating (out of 5): 4 Stars
Loved this different perspective…a group of diagnosed psychopaths are being studied at a DC-area college. When two of the students are murdered, the remaining members of the group take matters into their own hands. While it initially felt strange to “like” these characters, I quickly felt myself drawn in and wondering what they would do next.
I actually liked Chloe toward the end she was a total badass. I did not feel a connection to any of the other characters at all and I found Andre's chapters especially boring compared to Chloe's and Charles'. This book had a very unique premise involving a group of psychopaths and it actually sought to normalize psychopaths and I actually learned a lot of things about them that I did not know. The beginning was strong but as we got to the middle it kind of petered out for me the pacing slowed down significantly and there was so much build up for finding out who the killer was only for the reveal to be super anticlimactic. On the other hand, it was super interesting being in a psychopaths head and it was fun slowly discovering all the psychos in the study. There were also some funny parts that came from these main characters who liked empathy, it made for some humorous inner thoughts! All in all it definitely was not my favorite thriller by any means especially the ending ruined it for me as it was just totally not believable to me but I did find some merit in some aspects of the book.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me this book for an honest review.
Without saying too much, this book was excellent. It moved at a great pace and it didn't need to be too gory, or disturbing to maintain my interested.
There were a lot of moving parts and perhaps one too many characters in my opinion, but I enjoyed Never Saw Me Coming from start to finish.
Such an interesting premise for a book and different from any other thriller I have read.
A confidential psychopath study on a college campus goes off path as individuals start to die. Is it someone within the study that are killing the others or a mass murderer that is independent from this study?
As the pyschopaths try to investigate the murders, you have a very interesting perspective on the minds of these individuals. Though there were flaws in the story, I appreciated the premise was unlike anything I ever read and the story kept me intrigued until the last line. An addicting dark mystery from multiple point of views, that keeps you guessing until the end! What a ride.
