It is fascinating to read more about the events about Carlos Ghosn and how he impacted the auto industry. The book is well written, clear, and exciting to read,
This book tells the story of the rise and fall of Carlos Ghosn, the former head of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. The authors describe his time in Japan, the history of the companies involved, Japanese business traditions, and the eventual arrest and escape of Ghosn himself.
The first chapter starts off with the day of Ghosn's arrest. The entire scenario is described, from Ghosn landing at the airport and being detained, to his “accomplice” being simultaneously apprehended, to the press conference that followed his arrest. The differences between the Japanese criminal justice system and the US system are highlighted, as many in the West felt as though Ghosn was treated unfairly. The charges and participants in the sting operation are explained, as is the dramatic escape to Lebanon.
Starting with the second chapter, we travel back to when Ghosn first came to Japan, to tell the entire story of what his tenure was like as the head of Nissan. We learn about Japanese corporate traditions, and some early warning signs that Ghosn might clash with the established norms. We learn about Ghosn's EV push, and his crisis management tactics. Chapter 9 focuses more on the case against Ghosn, and we learn some additional details, as well as some possible motives and conspiracies. The authors describe the aftermath of the arrest, and the ramifications for the companies involved in the Alliance.
There really is a ton of background information about the Japanese business world and history, almost too much. I found all the history to be interesting, but I was mainly reading the book to learn about Ghosn himself. If you wanted to know more about what happened to him and why, then this is probably the most comprehensive book you'll find on the subject.
