Allen Eskens is an above and beyond excellent writer and his latest proves this without a doubt. The whole story was flawlessly told and wrought with suspense. The characters were flawed and very relatable, particularly the protagonist. Eskens has written a series and 2 standalones and each is exquisitely told and not at all cookie cutter plots that imitate each other. I highly recommend this to fans of mystery, suspense and general fiction.
Lila Cash is doing what she loves best, making the streets a safer place for residents of Hennepin County as a prosecutor. When a woman, clinging to life, is pulled from the Mississippi, police are sure her attacker is a local photographer named Gavin Spenser. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough evidence to make a charge stick. Lila is sure Gavin is the culprit, but he’s as slippery and slimy as an eel. Add to that Lila’s struggle with her own violent attack and her new boss from hell and something is bound to explode. Lila is one of the most believable protagonists I’ve encountered and her desperate struggle for justice is palpable
