Emma’s husband James dies unexpectedly by crashing his car into their garage. Emma and her teenage children, Kelsey and Hunter are relieved he’s dead. James was an alcoholic with who had a mentally abusive temper. now that James is gone, Emma thinks her life will be better without him, that is until she starts uncovering all of James’s secrets.
Emma’s friends Gray and Lizzie rally around her to help her through this awful time. However, one of them is hiding a big secret.
This was a deep book about family, friendship, and addiction. It was very well written and kept me reading to find out what James had been hiding from his family. Fast paced read and highly recommend!
On the outside everyone loved James. He had the perfect job as a PR rep for elite athletes. He had the perfect wife, kids and home, but all was not as it seemed. James was an abusive alcoholic. His home life was a mess, but was he better off dead? When an accident occurs, his wife Emma starts to question if it was an accident or if someone else was with him on that fateful night. As she starts her own investigation secrets come out of the woodwork. Secrets that include her best friends and family. More than one person would like to see James dead, but did someone act upon it? What really happened the night James died?
4 twisty stars
Emma’s two best friends don’t really like each other, and Emma’s husband is a piece of work. She’s had enough, she will confront him at drinks tonight before the company party. James is a no show though and soon an accident at home changes their lives forever.
James drank to excess, threated his children, and kept secrets. Did everyone wish him gone? Now he’s dead and all those secrets are spilling out. Emma and her kids limp through a memorial and figure out what life looks like without James’ menacing presence.
Weird details in his work and personal life start cropping up and Emma pursues some loose ends. Was James’ death an accident or was he murdered?
Everyone seemed to have secrets in this one and I liked the shorter chapters with alternating narrators. This one kept me guessing and turning the pages. I enjoyed this domestic thriller and would read the next one from this author.
There are some mixed reviews on this book. I am coming down on the positive side - I really enjoyed this book! Was it amazing literature? No. But it doesn't claim to be. It is suspense filled, it has twists and turns and it is just entertainment.
Emma is married to a handsome, successful, charming man that everyone loves - except his family. One night he drives home drink and crashes his car into the back of the garage, and he dies. This story is told partly in the aftermath, and partly in the events leading up to the event.
This was told from multiple points of view - the wife, each of the children, and the two best friends of Emma. It seems a little confusing as to why the best friends are telling their stories, but I just sat back knowing that the author would tie it all in eventually, and she did. One was pretty predictable and the other was actually a big surprise.
This was an easy, fast read. It is worth a read. I am giving it 3.5 stars. (I really wish we could do halves). I will round it up to 4 since I really enjoyed it.
The synopsis sounded great but I found it to have too slow of a pace to hold my interest. I gave up at 30%. I know this will be a hit for some but it just wasn’t the book for me.
Everyone in this twisty novel has a secret and all of them come out after James dies after he drunk drives his car through the wall of his garage. His wife Emma was planning to leave him- he was loathsome-but something about his death doesn't make sense so she turns to her friends Lizzie and Gray for help getting answers (law enforcement, btw, isn't involved at all here). Lizzie is worried about her daughter Willow and she's overextended financially. Gray's husband Darnell was James' partner and something's odd about him lately. And then there's Kelsey and Hunter. Everyone here- except James- has a chance to have their third person say, which works well here. This is a hard one to review without spoilers but know that while I suspected bit and pieces of the various secrets, the full extent. well wow. The layers are peeled back slowly, the pacing and tension is good (helped by the short chapters and changing perspectives), and Scott's storytelling is strong. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. It's a page turner with an unexpected ending.
I almost DNFed this around 30%, but I kept on because of all the reviews raving about what a clever puzzle this was. It didn't get better though. The reveal at the end was not what I expected, but it didn't make up for the glacial pace of the flat, boring characters. I don't recommend this one at all, but other people liked it so ymmv.
On the surface, the world of Emma and James Walsh appeared pretty great. But this sham of domestic bliss is shattered when James comes home late one night and crashes his car through their beautiful home’s garage. His death shocks their wealthy suburban New Jersey community. The rumors begin. Was he drunk? Was it suicide? Their teenage children Kelsey and Hunter have to deal with the aftermath. Emma shares her suspicions about the accident with her two close friends, one who is the wife of James’ business partner in their successful sports public relations firm. And who is the mystery woman who picks up when Emma calls her husband’s missing cellphone? As this creative story starts to unfold through multiple points-of-view and timelines, truths about the Walsh family and their friends are slowly revealed.
Wish You Were Gone is filled with so many lies and deceptions that you may need a scorecard. Author Kieran Scott has created a truly suspenseful domestic thriller filled with lots of surprises. You will not see all the twists and turns coming.
This book came with an intriguing synopsis. I wish I would have loved it but it ended up being just okay.
The story was very predictable. The characters all weren’t very well developed to the point that I really didn’t attach to any of them. I felt the friends were meddling. Turns out they were and plot twist in there wasn’t very shocking.
James Walsh has become a terrible husband. He is an alcoholic and verbally, borderline physically, abusive to his wife and children. Emma has had it and is preparing to serve him with divorce papers when he returns home one night, crashes his car through the garage wall and dies. Something doesn’t sit right with Emma about the accident. As she investigates James’ life, she learns more and more secrets and shares her concerns with her two best friends who, despite their love for Emma, openly dislike each other.
The story was riveting…..I couldn’t put it down. Although told from different POVs and different timelines, it was never confusing. Although the resolution strained credulity a bit, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC!
Wish You Were Gone started off great for me. I really enjoyed the drama right off the bat, both between the adult characters as well as the teen angst among the younger characters. However, at about 40% in, the story kind of lost me, and I was getting confused and somewhat uninterested. I would definitely describe this book as more of a drama than a thriller. I thought the ending or "whodunit" moment was pretty far fetched. It is definitely not a "stand out" book for me to remember for a long time or even highly recommend, but it wasn't terrible either. This was my first read by Kieran Scott, and I did REALLY enjoy her writing style. I just don't think the storyline and maybe even a few of the characters, especially Gray, meshed with me very well. I also really didn't enjoy the whole sports twist to the story either.
I love finding a great read by a new to me author. Really enjoyed this puzzle of a read.
Emma and James are living a perfect life. But you never know what goes on behind closed doors. James is the co-owner of a very successful sports PR firm. He is also an alcoholic. A horrific accident happens, but things don’t quite add up for his wife. Told thru many points of view which work so well in this case and adds that much more to the mystery. You will enjoy unraveling this mystery. Yes, there were little things that bothered me (lack of police investigation and circumstances surrounding his death), but I enjoyed the mix of characters, their dynamics with each other and trying to see where their pieces fit in the story.
Thanks to Ms. Scott, Gallery Books and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
Emma's Walsh has a seemingly perfect marriage to her husband James. He's wealthy, they have a nice home, two lovely kids...the perfect life (on paper). But what nobody knows is that James is an alcoholic nightmare to both his wife and kids. When James comes home one night and crashes into the garage, killing himself, the rest of the Walsh's are spinning! He's dead, but now he can't hurt them, right?
Everyone in the family is reeling with confusing emotions. Thank god, Emma has her besties to lean on. As all the characters try to make sense of what happened we learn, everyone has secrets. The story is a tasty treat and a quick read. It's a slow burn to the end and I couldn't see it coming.
3.5 stars thank you to Gallery Books and the author, as well as Netgalley!
Great book! I found it difficult to put this one down. The storyline is somewhat mellow, and calm even though what the families are dealing with are huge issues. I became invested in the characters and was surprised at the unexpected twists.
I was truly jazzed for this one, given the comparison to Dead to Me. The concept was intriguing: guy everyone, except for his family, loves drives his car through his own garage and dies. Mysterious circumstances, suspicious wife, lots to unravel.
Unfortunately, it just didn’t quite do it for me. The pacing was slower than I would prefer and I couldn’t quite get on board with most of the characters. The two bickering best friends really irritated me. I’m pretty sure the whole book could have happened roughly the same same way without them constantly being jealous high school mean girls to each other.
When the conclusion finally rolled around and the first big twist happened, in my head I was screaming at the MC for two chapters that she had it all wrong. Which she did.
I will say that the final twist was a surprise that I didn’t see coming. I appreciated not having it all figured out. However, by the time we really picked up speed, I was checked out of the story.
Sadly, while this was a highly anticipated read for me, it wasn’t my favorite. I do think many will enjoy it, but think it would be helpful to go in with the expectation that it’s more domestic suspense than thriller. I also think it’s extremely important to note a major content warning for domestic abuse.
This is a great story of a marriage and family that looks perfect but is far from it. The book begins with the death of James Walsh. His wife Emily has finally built up the courage to tell him she's leaving and taking their two teen children with her. They are to meet at a restaurant but he never show. Late that night, he drives his new car into the garage and is killed. Attributed to his being drunk. You'll never see the twists coming but they are fantastic. I've never read Kieran Scott before but I'll be checking to see what else is available. I know it's early in the year to have a best book but this one will be in my top 5 for sure. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange foor a fair and honest review.
I received an eARC of Wish You Were Gone by Kieran Scott from Gallery Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
4 stars! This was a roller coaster of domestic suspense. It's full of secrets and lies; a page-turner!
I mean with a title like that y'all know this is going to be a great thrill to read! So happy I did because it was outstanding! I am really impressed with the writing as well and cannot wait for the next novel by Kieran Scott!
Thank you NetGalley, for an e-ARC of Wish You Were Gone by Kieran Scott.
Wish You Were Gone is a fast-paced mystery that is hard to put down. Kieran Scott includes enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing all the way to the end. The book is written from various character's points of view, which adds layers to the mystery. So much deception and dysfunction makes every character a suspect.
This was my first by this author but I will definitely look for more!
There were twists and multiple perspectives and they built a solid base. As an avid thriller reader, I saw some of the turns coming but I was still surprised at times. I liked the writing, premise, characters and pace. The ending was out there but I’m down but I’m not unhappy. Yeah, pretty fun overall!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Gallery Books for a copy in exchange for a review.
