Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read and review Off the Pages by Alejandro Gonzales.
When requesting this book originally, I thought it was a graphic novel. So when I came to read the first time around to find it wasn’t exactly that, I reshelved it for a later time.
I’ve read Off the Pages now and again, because unfortunately I haven’t been able to sit and read it in large quantities. I couldn’t really get fully in to it and was quite glad to close the back cover.
I feel like this is a harsh review, but one that is only personal to me. It’s hard to review something that is entirely different to what you originally expected- and I think Off the Pages would be great for the right audience. Sadly that audience isn’t me.
Yeah... I requested this thinking it was a graphic novel, only to find out it's a written novel with influence /from/ graphic novels. So right off the bat, I was a little miffed to read this. And then the writing itself was just.... meh. It's not terrible, but it's not what I would have wanted here. It's difficult to enjoy. Can't really rec this one.
"Off the Pages" is one of the few books I have reviewed that I have a hard time recommending. Its language and violence would require an ‘R’ rating if transformed, as is, into a movie. Though written for a teen audience, I would have a difficult time offering it to the teens in my life. The characters were sometimes hard to follow - at times, making me wonder whether the story was covering the good guys or the bad guys.
The one redeeming quality was as a commentary on the 2016 or 2020 elections - where Obama had a literal role in the plot and Trump had a virtual role, though never being named specifically. I can only give the book two stars.

im not a person who naturally reads this type of books
This was something out of my comfort zone, pretty interesting though
. I hardly ever delve into the world of super heroes, let alone one that has fake prophets. i do watch series or movies but i always felt the book experience would not be that.
The concept of the story was pretty good.
the pace of the book was good
I love stories about world saving and bad ass characters and the unraveling of the story. I would have loved to see a little bit more character development, maybe some more background characters.
•Character development- 3☆
• Story Plot- 4☆
• Side characters- 2.5☆
• Flow of the story- 4☆
• Overall - 3.5☆
Overall, an interesting plot but the execution could be better. Character development and plot progression were lost in the nearly 400 pages. Additionally, this was categorized as both "Comics & Graphic Novels" and "Sci Fi & Fantasy," so I selected it, thinking that it was a comic. However, this is a prose novel that takes inspiration from cape comics.
This was an interesting read!
Although the character development felt a little lacking, the story was captivating nonetheless.
I am pretty big fan of the hero stories so of course I wanted to jump into this story. The overall idea of this story was really cool but the actual book fell short. I felt like there could have been a lot more character development. I also fell like the world fell flat for what was trying to be built. This was a decent first novel. It wasn't the worst but it definitely wasn't the best either.
