I really enjoyed The Street Party. I found the characters interesting but not very likeable. I could not put the book down as I just wanted to get to the end and find out how it would all come together and I wasn't disappointed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
Three mothers. One party. One horrifying accusation...
When Ruby is recruited to help plan an upcoming street party, she finds it a bit odd, as she doesn't really fit into this group of "perfect" mothers. She soon comes to realize that she has been roped into more than just planning. After the street party, Ruby finds herself wishing she had never gone to that initial planning dinner.
I was so excited when I read the description for this book, as it sounded like something that was right up my alley. Once I began reading, I realized this story was not quite was I was expecting. The plot and the characters were interesting but I personally felt this book was more of a drama than a thriller. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves drama and secretive, shady characters.
I love reading different perspectives of conversations or incidents and the different POVs work well in this story of a London neighborhood brought together for a fundraising street party and then torn apart by a sexual assault Using the fundraiser as a way to bring together different socio-economic families works well as the characters make clear they wouldn’t normally rub shoulders. My first read by this author and was pleased to see some feminist arguments and strong women amongst the group of otherwise belligerent privileged people.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of "The Street Party" in exchange for my honest review.
The story is told from the viewpoint of Ruby and Melissa. The second part of the book also has Nella and Jan woven in. The beginning of the story is on Friday 14, July. The story took a while to start off and would have been more enjoyable if it got to the point sooner. Books where too many characters are introduced are harder to follow along with. There were also many different plots to follow along with. Everyone in the story is holding some secret. It was also not really in the thriller genre.
The Street Party was a slow burn and felt like a long book. It did take a while for me to get into the story and in the end I really enjoyed it. 3 women with 3 very different lives - but how different are they? This is one street and group of people I would not want to live near.
I have to say I didn’t love this book but it grew on me. Firstly it was a very slow burn for me and it was just over half way that it jumped up a notch and got going. That said it’s a clever look at modern day life, class, the have and the have nots, and just how unrealistically perfect that other person’s perfect life and family really are. Told from the perspective of three different women in London, their stories intertwined by where they live, albeit from different sides of the square. Sometimes those who have less definitely have more
This book was fab. It held lots of tension, was diverse and had me wanting to find out more.
It is told from 3 women’s perspectives and focuses on the lead up to a social event “The Street Party” which is also a political campaign for one of the main characters husband, and the events that happens during the party. This story is full of deceit, lies, blackmail, and how people will try to portray their lives to be something that they are not, and go to great lengths to prove that.
It was a bit of a slow burn to start but it’s worth persevering through. As the story unfolds you get a glimpse of the lives of three very different women and their family lives, and the troubles they have/are facing. With the street party intertwining them all together. There are different family dynamics involved in the book and I like the diversity and true-to-life attitudes and issues that the story has welcomed into its pages. It gives it a real modern day London feel, which the author has captured fantastically!
** I received an advanced copy of this ebook to read and review. Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for allowing me this opportunity **
The Street Party is a story about a group of neighbors in a blended neighborhood (some affluent, some not). Nella, the queen bee of the neighborhood, at least monetarily, has organized a street party to raise money for something that happened in the neighborhood, and event which I was never clear on. She ropes in various people to help with the event.
I admit I had to push through the first 50 to 60 percent of this book. It is told from the POV of Nella, Ruby who is mother of a mixed race teen boy and girl and a widow, and Melissa, who is married to the school headmaster and step mother to his daughter, and also Ruby's friend. These POV switch every few pages, and this part I liked, as I enjoyed seeing similar events through the three characters eyes. What I struggled with was that I didn't get drawn into the lives of any of these characters and didn't much care what happened. Part of this was the dialogue. I am not British so maybe this is a cultural thing, but all the women were calling everyone "darl" or "doll", "cows" if they didn't like them, and "daft". It just got to be a bit much, and made all the characters blend together, although Melissa was the most guilty of this. Also, with the exception of Melissa and Ruby's friendship, these just seemed like nasty people who didn't like each other. I found it hard to believe they would go camping together and spend so much time together in general.
Once the story picked up mid way I did plow through rather quickly, but it was just a bit of a jumble and lacked a coherent thread to me. This could be a personal preference as others have reviewed this book well, but for me it was a slow read.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to red this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion, and also the author and publisher, Bookoutre.
Uh. I read it, but it was really hard for me. I was expecting a thriller, but it wasn’t. I'm sorry. If I wanted to read women’s literature, I would be more satisfied. Not a bad novella at all. Just different from my usual reading. After half the time of reading the book, something really happened. And finally it was interesting.
Three women from three families tell us a story. But we meet a lot of other people. Very deep and human themes, in keeping with today’s times, even some romance, abuse, drugs, friendships, guilt, false accusations. it's all in the book .. but I missed the action.
I have to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy.
Review to come very soon! You guys know how much I adore Bookouture! You find the best authors!!! xo
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy of The Street Party. It took me a while to get into it, the characters were not likable at all except for Zach but something kept me intrigued by the plot. The middle of the book was really fast paced, I’m glad I stuck with it.
I enjoyed this but I’m not sure it brings anything new to the table. I liked that the cast of characters were unlikable/morally gray and thought the development of each character was well done.
I was sort of reminded of Big Little Lies meets Truly Madly Guilty in a weird sort of way.
The characters are ok for me. Three very different families and the three woman who are a part of them Ruby, Nella and Melissa. Their families don't have much in common except for all living in the same neighborhood.
What surprised me the most is that this is not a thriller at least not in the traditional sense. This is more of character driven story. There is a party and a accusation after it that could tear the friendship the women have apart.
There are a lot of emotions that come to play in this book and some of the characters feelings do jump off the page to you. There is a lot going on in the book, a lot of side stories and it would be easy to get lost in the other subplots. Thankfully the author's note does clear a few things up, but still, there was some confusion on my part as to what I was really reading.
Thank you so much to #NetGalley and Bookouture forthe ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC.
3 Stars!
It was hard to put this book down.
An emotional story about friendships and how far you’ll go to protect your children.
This story was full of twists that you’ll never expect.
Well written, well plotted, engaging characters.
I think this could’ve definitely been a 5 star read, but it was just a bit too confusing, plus the first half way too slow, for me to rate it as 5 stars. Overall, I would still highly recommend, as I did find it to be quite fun to read, fast paced, well written, and full of some fun chills and thrills! I think this author is one that usually provides fun, quick thrillers or domestic suspense/drama and feel this is definitely one that fits in that category! Definitely would jugliy recommend everyone to grab a copy and give it a go, even if the first half isn’t your cuppa, the second half will definitely thrill you!
As any good well explained thriller, it does have a little slow pace at the beginning but we need to understand where are all this people coming from, what we can see and then what's underneath and that's okay, it felt very relatable it had a very family next door feeling , that make it more deep in a way.
The characters were alive and you felt for them every step of the way, that was a good thing for me really, no one wants dead characters that you can't relate to or think of the situation.
The resolution was a little bittersweet as life is, since well in life there no good or bad it's just very complicated and sometimes toxic so on that I think it was a good resolution for everyone, since everyone got what they needed or wanted and some were more schemy than others as in real life.
It was a very nice thriller for me, will recommend it if you want something a little more close to home.
"The party was supposed to be the highlight of the summer. If only I’d known that night would destroy our lives" -
WOW! The street party was filled with twists and turns in all directions. This book haunted me long past putting it down. This was a fast paced novel that keeps your interest early on. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and character development. I was able to visualize the different personalities within this wealthy community. It was interesting to read the multiple perspectives and how everyone had a different viewpoint depending on the bias of their point of view. I was able to finish this book in one sitting. The characters were well developed, some you loved, some you hated.
There are some minor triggers of domestic abuse and sexual assault .
All in all I would recommend this novel to someone who enjoys psychological thrillers.
This gave me all the "Big Little Lies" vibes in the best ways. Seeber weaves a seductive web of lies, secrets and betrayal that will have you hooked from the very beginning. The pacing is excellent, with one question popping up every time another is answered, keeping you intrigued.
I did enjoy this book, the plotline is interesting and the synopsis made me want to read it, I did find it a little slow to draw me in though, it took a little time to get going!
This book did gather pace about 80 pages in and I enjoyed it, ending wrapped up well.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the arc of The Street Party. The blurb made the book sound so intriguing! The first half was rather slow. We were introduced to the characters and none of them were very sympathetic or likable. I'm not sure why so many books lately have an abusive husband, but I don't like it and am tired of it. The second half of the book moved faster and I was anxious to find out what had happened. Every chapter seemed to end on a cliffhanger which got more annoying than interesting, especially when we found out what had happened and it as not earth=shattering. However, the writing was good, in that it did a great job of drawing the characters. The story was pretty good. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 because the book kept me reading to the end.
