Another excellent edition to a wonderful series! Full of twists and turns that leaves you wanting more and enjoying each moment until the end when the killer is caught!
Two Wicked Desserts by Lynn Cahoon is the second full length novel in the Kitchen Witch Series, and, like the first, is a lot of fun. Mia is running a catering business in an old school in Magic Springs, a place with magic in more than just the name. Her business is really starting to pick up and she is excited for the future. But a dead body in her back yard has her wondering who has it out for her now. And why did they kill someone in her back yard?? When the police look to her houseguest, the daughter of her grandma's dead boyfriend, things start to get a little dicey. I had fun listening to this story. I always enjoy fantasy and this one was great. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read it. All opinions are my own.
Mia and her grandmother are still living in Magic Springs, Iowa and hoping their catering/cooking school business soon gets into the black. This is book 2 in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries and can be read as a stand alone. Grandmother isn't having any luck trying to get the warlock Dorian Alexander's spirit removed from Mia's cat Mr. Darcy. When is daughter Cindy shows up with a book filled with his spells she becomes the number one suspect for a murder. The three work together to find the real murderer. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Mia Malone just wants to get her catering business off the ground. She does not need a greedy realtor telling everyone she is leaving town. And she definitely doesn’t need a dead hit man under her tree. Unfortunately, she has both. In addition, while her grandmother is staying with her till the murderer is caught, she brings along a Hollywood actress who received her powers upon her father’s death and need some guidance in how and when to use them. Will they tell the actress that their father’s spirit is trapped in Mia’s cat?
This is a fast-paced fun read! I am thankful for the electronic copy of the book that I received from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

Two Wicked Desserts by Lynn Cahoon is the second book in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries series. I have read & loved the previous book and novellas. This book can easily be read as a standalone cozy mystery.
This paranormal mystery was so good! I love all of the characters and enjoyed the story. I love the small town atmosphere and the not-so secret coven of witches!
The mystery was great, with lots of twists and turns and great suspense, right up to the very end. I loved this book and highly recommend it to cozy mystery fans!
I'm so grateful to Lynn Cahoon, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
This was another great book in the Kitchen Witch series. I love the characters and the setting. The story is interesting and the mystery is intriguing and keeps you turning pages quickly. Mia and her gram and friends are delightful. The clues will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see if the mystery can be solved. I am really looking forward to the next installment in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corporation for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
The second in the Magic Springs series brings back a host of memorable characters and a welcoming fun little town set near Boise, ID. I really enjoy the idea of Mia's Morsels and the progress she has made on the school . I really enjoy the setting and meeting the characters again. I really enjoy Lynn Cahoon's books and this one was no different. For some reason it took me a lot longer to get through this one that the others, but I'm not sure why.
In this installment, Mia's business is taking off and she and Christina are up to their ears in orders, when a dead man that Mia has never met finds him self dead in the new garden. It seems like things were start to point towards Trent as the murderer. I felt like Trent' and Mia's relationship should have been progressing, but her emotions towards him were a little flat. Gran is working on trying to free Dorian from Mr. Grey's cat body and seems to be making some progress! Dorian's daughter, an actress from CA is visiting and along with his estate, she as also inherited his book of shadows, so Gran is working with her on that.
I look forward to the next one in this series. Thank you for the ARC from NetGalley and all opinions are my own.
I had read and reviewed One Poison Pie by Lynn Cahoon earlier this year. So when I was surfing NetGalley and saw Two Wicked Desserts, I knew I had to pick it up.
The Kitchen Witch Mysteries series follows Mia Malone, who owns a small catering and cooking school business in a small-town Idaho. She’s what her family calls a “kitchen witch,” those who focus on healing and peace. You know the motto “do no harm.”
Mia has surrounded herself with her grandmother, who is helping her understand her witchcraft, her ex-boyfriend’s sister, who is helping with the business, and a new boyfriend. Of course, there are many other secondary characters to round out the town and staff the mystery.
The basic plot of the mystery is that a man is found dead on Mia’s property, and she’s not happy with how slow the investigation is going, so she decides to snoop. The mystery itself wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t very deep. It felt that more time was spent on Mia’s relationships and business than solving the mystery. It was almost as if the mystery was a second thought, and it just wasn’t developed as much as I would have liked.
Now that’s not to say I didn’t like the story. I enjoyed the subplot described in the blurb with Dorian and Cindy. It was primarily comic relief for me and helped beef up the story since I could only take so much of Mia’s business plans or her boyfriend’s overprotectiveness.
All in all, I was a little disappointed in this second book in the series. I had high hopes after the first book, but Two Wicked Desserts fell a little flat for me. I do like the premise of the series, and Mia is quite likable, so I’ll probably try one more book in the series in hopes that there is a more in-depth mystery to sink my teeth into.
Two Wicked Desserts by Lynn Cahoon is the 2nd book in A Kitchen Witch Mystery series. It can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading One Poison Pie first. It gives you the backstory on Magic Springs, Idaho. Mia Malone is getting Mia’s Morsels up and running with help from her grandmother and ex-fiancé’s sister, Christina. Mia is also learning about magic and spells. I find the characters to be developed and realistic. We get to follow Mia as they go about her everyday life (cooking, eating, learning magic, shopping, making menus, going out with Levi). A stranger is found dead behind Mia’s new residence. Mia finds herself once again dealing with Detective Mark Baldwin. When Baldwin becomes fixated on Dorian’s daughter, Cindy as the guilty party, Mia works to prove she is innocent. The mystery was light. It was not the central focus of the story. There are a limited number of suspects which makes solving it a cinch. I believe more time was spent helping Cindy figure out which spell she activated than on the mystery. The paranormal element is sprinkled throughout the story. We get to learn more about kitchen witches and how they are different from other witches in town. The school may also have a dark history. Mia is trying to learn more about the school and the witches who helped build it. Mary Alice, Mia’s grandmother, and Mia spend time trying to find the correct spell to free Dorian from Mr. Darcy’s body. Dorian is not enjoying his time in a cat’s body. Gran, though, does not seem to be giving it her best effort. The grandmother has something she wishes to discuss with Mia, but she never gets out the full story. I hope we get closure on this issue soon. Christina is having relationship issues plus problems with her new friend. I found the pacing to be mixed (sometimes the story moved along at a good pace and other times it was slow) and the ending was anticlimactic. Two Wicked Desserts is a charming story with fun characters, but I felt it needed a little more work. I am, though, curious to find out what happens next with Mia and the gang especially as to why Trent can hear Gloria. Two Wicked Desserts is a magical tale with a spell gone amiss, a gifted grimoire, a selfish friend, a covert room, a deceased stranger, and mouthwatering meals.
3,5* rounded to 4.
I like Lynn Cahoon style of writing and usually like her mysteries, always a lot of fun to read.
I'm on the fence for this one as it seems to be a filler and the introduction to developments in the series.
It was fun to catch with Mia and the gang, there were plenty of funny moments but the mystery was on the backseat and a bit unsatisfying.
I look forward to reading the next in this series as I think it will surely be better.
Not my cup of tea.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This was another great book in the Kitchen Witch series. The "paranormal" elements are light but cozy and tie into the plot very well. The mystery was well paced, and I did not figure it out until the end. The relationships between the characters are realistic and endearing. There is also a side mystery concerning Mia's family history that we learn more about in each book, and I look forward to finding out more. Highly recommend!
Two Wicked Desserts is the second book in Lynn Cahoon's Kitchen Witch Mystery series. I would say that this is a paranormal lite cozy. I think if you are not interested in a cozy that really leans into the magic, you will probably enjoy this series as while there is some magic, the amateur sleuth still solves the murder using traditional questioning and observations.
I like Mia our main character, she is steadfast and remains calm even when bad people are after her. There is a nice slow romance with Trent, who is a grocery store owner and not in law enforcement, which is nice. Instead we have a competent sherrif in Mark Baldwin and Mark and Mia have an entertaining bit of bickering throughout the book.
The food and catering talk in the book is mouth-watering and the pets and Mia's grandma give the story just right amount of magic. This second book is a nice continuation of the first and I look forward to what happens next!
4.5 Stars for Two Wicked Desserts
Two Wicked Desserts by Lynn Cahoon is book two in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries.
This is a fun, easy to read Cozy with plenty of plot twists and likeable main characters. Of course, you also have some shady extras in the story. You also get family, friendship, romance, humor and a little bit of magic. There is also a lovable cat, after all, there are witches so you have to have a cat.
All Mia wants to do is plant an herb garden in the back of her property. That gets placed on the back burner when she finds a body on her grounds. The next question is why is there a hit man in Magic Springs. Mia doesn't want her business to get anymore bad press and sets out to get answers, hoping she isn't the next on the list.
I was given an ARC from Kensington via NetGalley for an honest review.
I love Lynn Cahoon's series. As soon as a new one comes out, I reach for it. This particular story, however, felt less like a mystery and more of an accounting of what Mia does in a day. The mystery took a backseat in this one and made it hard for me to be interested in the story. While I like the direction Mia's business is moving in, it wasn't what I wanted. Even the reveal of the murderer is so short and barely touched on. I was hoping for more of the paranormal aspect of the series that this one only hinted at. Hoping the next one gets back on track.
I'm a bit on the fence on this book. I enjoy the characters and the world building but some of the action is a bit far fetched and it definitely would help to read prior books in the series.
Mia has bought an abandoned school to use as a cooking school and base for her catering business. She is also living there with Christina, her ex-boyfriend's sister and her employee and friend. Not all is going smoothly for Mia. She has had run ins with the local real estate developer who really wants her property and is making things miserable for Mia.
MIa has plans to add an herb and vegetable garden to the grounds and when the utility company shows up to mark the site, the worker finds a dead body.
They later discover that the dead man is a hit man And what was he doing in Magic Springs? Who was he hired to kill and who killed him in turn?
I received an ARC from Netgalley but the opinion expressed is my own.
I love this series by Lynn Cahoon. The series is very different than any other I have seen. The characters and their development not only throughout the book but the series makes them loveable and wanting to visit with them again and again. I love how the plot keeps you on your toes and not wanting yo put it down.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to read this follow-up. However, I was pretty disappointed this time around. While I still appreciate the setting and the way Cahoon has created a fun magic-filled setting for her cozies, the mystery just wasn't there for me this time. There were so many little plot lines set up for additional novels that the pacing of this one never settled. Too many threads with too little resolution. The last couple of chapters frustrated me so much that I had to knock another star off... I'm willing to give this series one more shot because book 1 was such a delight, but I'm not sure it'll be worth it.
I'm not really into cozy mysteries, or any mysteries really, but check into them once in a rare while as quick reads, particularly the ones with recipes, witches, cats, and bakeries. I wasn't aware that this was pt 2 in a series, but it wasn't hard to follow; it works as a standalone. I liked the characters and it was somewhat satisfying that not all spells work they way one would wish, but some mysteries are solved in a satisfactory fashion, others have likely come from pt and won't be resolved until later in the series. Cozy mystery lovers will enjoy this one. Recipes are for cheesecakes, not a favorite, but may be I'll give then a try for holidays!
I enjoy this series. the author keeps me guessing as to what is going to happen. Will Dorian ever be able to leave the cat? I enjoy the mystery and the visits with the Mia , her grandmother and the sister to Mia's ex.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Mia Malone's catering business and cooking school is going well. In the meantime she is learning more about her craft and also trying to help her grandmother in moving Dorians spirit on from her cats body. When Dorian's daughter Cindy comes to town they are tasked with showing her how to use the grimoire he left her. Cindy just wants to take the book and leave, she has never been truly interested in her fathers craft. Mia and her grandmother are determined to teach her before she leaves though. Meanwhile a body has been discovered behind the school and Mia doesn't know who the murdered man is and what he was doing on her property. The mystery is to intriguing to pass up and Mia can't help but investigate. Is she putting herself at risk as she digs further into this new mystery? Follow along and see where her snooping takes her, can she find a killer before someone else ends up dead?
