This is the 2nd book in this debut series by cozy author Lynn Cahoon. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. I had read the first in series and find this series charming with great charcters.
This is a good Witch Cozy Mystery. The paranormal aspect is a departure for this author and a fun read. This 2nd in series has good witches, warlocks and lots of witchy antics going on. Mia is learning her powers and dealing with another murder that involves her. A real fun mix of interesting charcters among a unique setting of a culinary teaching school. The sleuth was very well crafted and fun to conclusion. A fun cozy read for all that enjoy paranormal cozies.
WHAT did I just read? Was that really a mystery? WHAT HAPPENED?? And that ending?? C'mon. Sigh. If it weren't for the characters that I really enjoy, I would have quit this book, and they are the only reason I will keep reading. Mia is a really good MC and Christina has really started to grow on me. Trent and Levi are also good in this, but I think we will see a reckoning soon with Trent and his wishy-washy ways in regards to the Craft. You cannot dabble or look down your nose at something and still use it without it coming back to bite you in the butt, and I see this happening sometime down the road [and it will serve him right].
I will say that this was a lot of book for the extremely frustrating and meh ending we get [was there even a reveal? Curious minds want to know!!
This was absolutely NOT my favorite of this series [and the seriously crappy narration did not help an already struggling story-line - next time I will just wait and be extra late with my review and read the book because I don't think I could listen to that narrator ever again] [and it's a shame because the previous novella was really well done], but I can hope that they get better as we move on.
Thank you to NetGalley, Lynn Cahoon, and Kensington Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A dead body is found outside of the old school that Mia lives in and uses as a base for her catering and cooking school. When the daughter, Cindy, of her grandmother's late lover comes to town looking for help with her magic, Mia is hosting her in her home as well as trying to help figure out who the dead person was. When it turns out that Cindy has connections to the dead guy and the dead guy is a hitman, things take some interesting turns.
I love this series. Mia is such a fun character. I also love that it's only book 2 and she's already settled on one love interest, no triangles! I love all of the characters in this book and I love getting to know more of them. I will say that the big reveals in the books in this series seem to be not so big. If you're not paying attention, you can miss them. I still adore this series and Lynn Cahoon and cannot wait to read more from her.
Two Wicked Desserts by Lynn Cahoon is the second in her Kitchen Witch series. Mia owns and runs a new business in Magic Springs, Idaho. She is, in fact, a witch, but a good witch, living in a town full of witches and an active coven. She has a lovely boyfriend called Trent who is the manager of his family's grocery store. He also has magic but prefers to ignore it. About the only person Mia knows who is not magic is the local police chief, Baldwin, who would be just as happy without Mia's assistance. She has a lovely grandmother, Mary Alice, who is a much more experienced witch, and an apprentice, Christina, who just happens to be her ex-boyfriend's sister. There is also her cat, Mr. Darcy, at present is carrying the additional burden of Dorian's spirit. Dorian is Mary Alice's deceased boyfriend. That wasn't her fault, though. All-in-all, it a lively cast of characters. There is an important visitor, Cindy, who is an actress from California, Dorian's daughter who is in need of some tutoring on the magic she has inherited.
There was a dead man in Mia's backyard. She didn't find him. The man from the power company, coming to mark the power so she and Trent could dig an herb garden, did. It starts to get complicated from here. Mia had purchased an old school building that at lest one other person in town wanted. He seems willing to do anything in order to get her to sell. Did he do this? An overall good mystery, Cahoon's strength is in the characters and setting. Magic is a go-to trope that she is managing nicely so far. It's not overbearing or burdensome, just mildly amusing. The murder has nothing to do with magic, it's all human. It is a good book with an amusing plot and excellent characters and good character growth. I recommend it.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Two Wicked Desserts by Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #twowickeddesserts
I love Lynn Cahoon's cozy mystery series and Two Wicked Desserts, the 2nd book in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries is a perfect example of the reason. The characters are the stars of the series and I loved them all, Mia, Christine, Trent, Levi, Gran, and Detective Baldwin. With each book and novella we learn just a bit more about them and about the magic that surrounds them and in this one we get to meet Trent and Levi's mother!
The mystery plot is challenging; Mia is positive that her arch nemesis is the villain but evidence points in too many directions for the resolution to be that simple. Dorian's daughter arrives needing help with the magic that she never had any interest in. She has no clue that her father shares the body of Mia's familiar, a cat named Mr. Darcy. That ignorance leads to a few interesting revelations in his presence. It is great to see Christine settle in to a more responsible role as she finds the work she loves. It was also fun to see that she respects herself enough to stand for what she feels she deserves.
My thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for giving a chance to read an ARC of Two Wicked Desserts. I always review books I love and I have loved every cozy mystery the Lyn Cahoon has written so I knew I would love this one and I did!

Mia Malone is working hard to keep her cooking school and catering business successful, but someone has been spreading rumors that she will be leaving town soon! Mia suspects a local realtor that wants to buy her property and the evidence does lend credit to that belief. Magic, ghosts, and good food are all components in this story and I enjoyed the story very much!
Thanks to the publisher for an ARC; all opinions are my own.
This is a cozy mystery, and this is the second book in the Kitchen Witch Mystery series. I loved a good Witch Cozy Mystery. This book was done so well. I loved that there was Witches learning their powers and their was witches that know their powers. I loved the mixed of characters. This old school that Mia is living in and opening a new business out of sounds like should a cool old building. I feel the old school made the book come to life. I love with a building brings the story to another level. I love the cat Mr. Darcy. All the characters in this book was so much fun. The mystery was fun and I love trying to figure out the clues with the characters. This book was just so much fun to read, and I will have to pick up the next book in this series when it comes out. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Publishing Corporation) or author (Lynn Cahoon) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Two Wicked Desserts by Lynn Cahoon is the 2nd book in the Kitchen Witch Mystery series, and another fun addition. I enjoy all of Ms. Cahoon's series, and I'm enjoying this one too. Mia Malone is a kitchen witch who is starting over in Magic Springs, Idaho where her grandmother lives, and witches and warlocks are accepted. Mia has open a new gourmet dinner delivery business and her ex's sister Christina is helping her out. While Mia and her grandmother try to help Dorian Alexander, who is trapped inside the cat Mr. Darcy, his powers have been transferred to his daughter, Cindy. When a hitman is found dead, Cindy is the prime suspect and Mia and her grandma are determined to find the truth. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. The characters are delightful. I really like the narrator too, the story was relaxing and easy to listen to. I highly recommend this cozy mystery with a little magic.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I've been enjoying this series. Like many cozy mystery series, I'm more interested in the side characters than the main sleuth. While Mia is a tad boring, her Grandmother and employee Christina are fun to read about. I do like the vision for her business and passion for food. Her relationship with Trent is a bit of a snore, I hope it heats up in later entries.
The central mystery was basic, but we learn a bit more about the history of the school and Mia's place in Magic Springs.
When I read a cozy mystery a big piece of my enjoyment is the town. Magic Springs is really starting to take shape and has become a character of its own.
I have read all of Lynn Cahoon's series and I'm normally a huge fan of her work. This series just feels off for me. I'm not drawn to Mia and the murder mystery felt like an afterthought to all the other bits of the plot like the ghosts, the secret room, Mr. Darcy and Dorian, Cindy and her magic, Cindy and her love life, just to mention a few.
I was very excited for this series because I adore all her other series and she is so good at creating vivid and strong characters that you want to spend time. I also love paranormal cozies, which makes Mia being a with a plus. So I will give Mia and Magic Springs another shot before I decide to stop reading this series. There's definitely potential for some magic here!
The last thing Mia needed was a dead body on her property, but unfortunately that's what happened, and while Det. Baldwin wasn't trying to finger her for the crime, he did seem to think Dorian's daughter had something to do with it. Meanwhile, Grams was still trying to separate Dorian's ghost from Mr. Darcy cat's body, Christina and Levi were going through a bit of a rough patch in their little romance, and the elusive John Louis was at it again. The question was whether he'd finally be caught doing something illegal enough to get put away for good. The author sure did a great job creating a character so loathable that he's another one I wouldn't mind seeing as the victim, and a lot of Magic Springs residents would probably agree, lol.
It's always interesting that while the main murder always gets solved in this series, there's something else out there like a mystery with the school building or someone from Grams's magical past. Will poor Ghost Dorian ever get separated from the cat? It's never dull in Magic Springs!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
Mia Malone's plans for her kitchen garden is put on hold when a body is found in her backyard. The prime suspect is Dorian's actress daughter, Cindy, who is in town to settle her father's estate. Cindy claims the murder victim was helping prepare for her role as an assassin in a film project. Besides the dead body in the back yard, Mia is dealing the rumor that she is closing her business and leaving town. One of my favorite things about the series is Mia's relationship with Christina. Christina is a part of her family, not just the little sister of Mia's ex.

Two Wicked Desserts is the second book in The Kitchen Witch Mysteries series by Lynn Cahoon.
Mia Malone is setting up a cooking school and catering business in an old school that she and her ex-boyfriend’s sister live in.
I really enjoyed this book. It was the first one I’d read that featured a kitchen witch. It’s interesting that the grandma’s gentleman friend’s spirit is trapped in Mia’s cat. I liked that Mia actually ran her business and didn’t let someone else handle things while she tried to solve the murder. The characters are well developed and I can’t wait to see what is in store fire them.
Thank you to the author, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for the free copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This series is a good bet for cozy readers who enjoy a sprinkling of the paranormal with their reads. It doesn't rely too heavily on magic to solve the mysteries, which I appreciate in this type of story. The mystery in this one feels like it got rushed at the end, and I think that having not read the novellas that accompany this series makes me feel like I've missed some of the backstory and detail that I need for character development.
This series is not heavy on the witch craft but has just enough to earn the paranormal cozy label. Mia is a kitchen witch and new to her powers. She has a catering business and teaches cooking classes so it's a natural next step to plant a back yard garden to add to the ingredients for her businesses. Plans did not involve a dead body in place of normal plantings. If that isn't enough to confuse things, Mia's cat, Mr. Darcy has a little something extra setting him apart from other felines - he has the spirit of a warlock sharing his furry body - how does one go about removing it? Mia and her grandmother are working on that. So Dorian is now residing in the cat and his daughter, Cindy, is Mia's houseguest and the police suspect that Cindy killed the guy left in Mia's back yard.
From the setting in Idaho, the delightful array of characters, the paranormal theme and a well plotted mystery - it's a very nice escape from the craziness we all face these days. Who wouldn't want even a little magic in the kitchen to smooth our spirits? I wouldn't turn it down.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoy these charming mysteries set in the small town of Magic Springs, Idaho.
Mia is once again being dogged by a nasty developer to sell her property to him, including spreading rumors she is closing her catering and take out business, Mia's Morsels, and leaving town. Unfortunately for him, Mia is a strong and determined kitchen witch and she has no shortage of business in her new home. When a dead man turns up in Mia's backyard, she immediately suspects another play for her business.
I really like the cast of characters in this series. I appreciate Mia as a determined protagonist who does not take guff from anyone, especially when it comes to her business. Mia's Gran is also delightful, helping Mia still navigating being a witch and cooking up delicious meals. Mr. Darcy, Mia's cat, and his spirit companion Dorian are fun to watch because one never knows who is in charge at what time.
I have now read both novellas and both books in this series and am pleased to see a Christmas novella being released in the fall. I look forward to more visits to Mia in Magic Springs.
I normally really like this author's books, and I very much enjoyed the first one in this series, but this one I just wasn't enamored with. As with the first book, all the great characters were there, but the plot felt a bit non-existent and almost an after thought. When a dead body is found in the MC's backyard I thought, given she is the amateur sleuth in this cozy series, that she would have shown some serious interest in snooping into the details. Instead she seemed more interested in mundane daily activities. But as with all this author's books, she writes great characters and great dialogue, both of which were present in this book.
This is the 2nd installment in the Kitchen Witch Mystery series. Mia Malone has moved back to Magical Springs Idaho from Boise and has opened up her own catering business called Mia’s Morsels and she has bought the old St. Catherine’s School which she has renovated. She is combating rumors that she is leaving town and trying to build her business. Her Grandmother is still trying to help her deceased boyfriend Dorian’s spirit move on and Dorian’s daughter, Cindy is in town from Hollywood to learn more about her inheritance spell book and work with her brother to settle her Father’s estate. A dead body is found outside the school and once again Mia is involved with another murder. Turns out the victim was a hit man and Cindy was seen with him prior to his death. The detective focus’s on her but Mia is not convinced as well as trying to figure out who is sending her threats and some mysterious things happening around the school. Mia’s relationship with Christina (the sister of her ex from Boise) is going strong as is her relationship with Trent Majors. Also her Grandmother wants to talk to her about some things in their family history that she needs to be aware of. This mystery kept me engaged the entire time and the resolution was quick, I cannot wait to see what happens in the next installment. This is a really enjoyable series.
Love this series! It's fun and intriguing and I'm never sure what's gonna happen next. It definitely keeps me flipping the pages quickly until I'm done.
I love Mia, her gran, and all the other fascinating characters who get pulled into helping Mia solve mysteries. I'm especially intrigued by Mia's house (formerly a private school). It seems to be almost sentient. Or maybe there's just ghosts... Highly recommend.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
This second kitchen witch mystery has several mysteries or puzzles in the storyline. A dead body is found in the area of the property where Mia wants to put a garden and I think that was supposed to be the main topic but there were so many other things taking place alongside the way that the reveal on the culprit was a bit anticlimactic. That’s not meant as a criticism. The book is great and I was thoroughly engaged through out. I was simply surprised that I cared more about the mysteries surrounding the school and family grimoires.
One complaint I had about the first book was that it didn’t seem to have much magic. This second book has plenty of magic. It fits well.
Mia is getting her business up and running and there is much about food and planning meal making for delivery and events. It adds nicely to the story.
The book is set somewhere in central Idaho between Boise, Twin Falls and Sun Valley. It would be fun if it were a real town and if magic did exist. I would be curious to meet Mia, Trent and Grans.
